  • Will the DUP ever learn that Brexit was both bad for them and for the Union? The new leader Gavin Robinson stood up in the House of Commons on Tuesday and tried to issue a 'I told you so', but by doing so he demonstrated a lack of understanding of why the UK as a whole can't diverge from human rights.

It's amazing how few in England/Britain realise these are still active terrorist organisation in charge of entire estates, neighbourhoods and in the case Robinson was talking about, the entire East of Belfast is essentially UVF and the man everybody knows is their leader (groomed a girl then had her shot) got off again in court. To be honest, a referendum on NI is coming sooner rather than later and all of the arguments for remaining in the union are gone. In terms of economics, being attached to the EU and a rich Irish Republic is better than being an unwanted province of a much poorer UK (whose only saving grace is London). All of the fears of being under Catholic rule are also long past the point of relevance as the Republic has underwent a quiet cultural revolution and is no longer a nation dominated by the Catholic Church as it once was. I cant see a single rational argument why an ordinary NI citizen would vote to remain in the UK.

Also it isn't like The Republic is a Catholic Republic as it was back in the 1970s. Modern Ireland is a very progressive nation that is no longer dominated by the Catholic Church. Any fear of discrimination (other than maybe the hard-line unionists not getting to throw hate parades every other month) is simply an old lie propagated by a dying political movement. The boogey man of Catholic Theocracy is long dead and ordinary Protestants from Belfast and Derry will be welcomed into the Republic with open arms.
While there is still the argument that London has deeper pocket books than Dublin, I also think that London was only generous when it needed the DUP votes to keep the Tories in power under Theresa May. Also I am pretty sure that Brussels will help pay for the cost of reunification and that Berlin (given Germany's own recent history of reunification) and Paris (largely to spite London) could easily be persuaded to give some donations to make up for the loss of London subsidies.

As a bystander who isn't Irish, this has less to do with immigration than the DUP trying to make itself relevant. I remember when the Ulster Unionists were always the government of Northern Ireland until Ian Paisley established the DUP. In recent years we have seen growth in support for both Sinn Fein and also the Alliance Party. Added to this those in Northern Ireland have seen a massive change in the Republic moving from a priest-ridden socially conservative country to one that is progressive and liberal. On top of this the Republic is exceptionally economically successful. The DUP continues to fight for causes that aren't the priority of modern Northern Ireland. With regard to power and influence at Westminster, in 1979 Labour learned to its costs not to trust the Unionists and despite a massive injection of funding Theresa May repeated the mistake with the DUP.

While I agree Chris that the Catholic Church had far too much influence over the population of Ireland and the Government too I'm not sure the Population of Ireland was necessarily as socially Conservative as the population on Northern Ireland. There is a 2 part documentary here on UA-cam from the 1970s where a bus load of Unionists were brought from NI to Ireland and it makes for interesting viewing. There is a part were they go to Maynooth and meet Catholics training to be priests in the seminary and the priests to be have more socially liberal views than the Unionists. Also NI had playgrounds shut on Sundays back then too yet no such restrictions in Ireland. That's not to say that there weren't other areas were Ireland was far more Conservative than NI of course such as on Divorce and sexuality etc..

If i go to England, i want to see all things uniquely English like their rivers and lakes, their architecture, and their lovely old rural villages . Likewise, if i go to Scotland , Wales, and the Island of Ireland. This diversity of identities would be like looking at four individual masterpieces instead of just one plain old grey canvas. The realignment would offer a unique opportunity to exploit the lucrative tourist market.

    hi Robe,
As an Belgium EU citizen i fear many Europeans will abandon the uk in many ways (toerism to products)
because 30% makes the entire uk looks racist esp for the younger generation (and they are the future).
Having a company in Scotland and also friends in England I know it's not on the minds from the average joe but some extremists, many that voted brexit (30-40% of the votes to leave) for promises that where impossible to achieve.
Like the captain of a certain fisching boat (troller) who's crew was 90% eu workers for over 10 years, he thought those that work here for all those time will have no problem or even conciderd them from the UK.
He only thought about better fishing grounds. He never thought about losing his crew and all the years i know him he said that no Scot would do the job since it's hard work and pay depends on the catch.
He also didn't thingk it ment dumping raw suwage into the sea ( lucky not so far in our regio but ...).
Everything he voted for turned out to be the opposite (beter funding for nhs - schools)
This +- also aply for the farmers.
Sadly how it is played now those that did vote to stop imigration do like everybody voted because of that reason.
And as a busness persone , I can only say that UK is digging it's own grave with that for simple reason of population ageing !
Production can not ceep growing when you lose work force , so either every persone has to build a family and have at least 3 kids or you accept imigrants otherwise your work force will decline.
And as a country i would prefere ppl coming to live there and pay taxes for years than those with temporaly visa that will pay for a short period and than take all what they made back home and pay taxes there for rest of their live.
But that may be the differance between running a company or politics these days , one plans for 10 years in the future, the other try the qiuck and easy fast scam since who cares the card house colapses in 10 years
