  • When Boris Johnson won an 80-seat-majority, it was believed it would last a generation. However, a focus group was set up to check in with those who backed the Tories 5 years ago to see if they will continue their support and the news for Rishi Sunak was pretty terrible.

In five years a lot of older people will no longer ‘have the vote’ permanently. A lot more of the 13-17 year olds will gain it.The latter will never have known anything other than Tory corruption, likes, austerity and this will work against the Tories for a long time - providing Labour don’t f@ck it up!

I had a door step from a Labour activist a week ago. Stood at the door speaking to him for a good 5 minutes and left him with my opinion that it could be a poisoned chalice for Labour unless they are honest and clear. There is a real chance that one Labour term will be followed by several Tory terms. A real chance that voters will blame Labour for the effects of the Tories skimming off the public purse and taking that way too far. The majority of voters do not take an interest in politics and that makes them very malleable and easily conned. I hope I am wrong.

The Institute of Fiscal studies said that £18 billion of cuts are already baked in by Westminster chancellor Hunt that Labour and the Tories have signed up to.
The Institute of Fiscal studies said that Labour and the Tories should be more honest with the public.
The Resolution Foundation said that the next UK government at Westminster faces a £33 billion hole in finances or a return to austerity.
The Tories and Labour want to reduce the national debt but the Resolution Foundation said promises " detached from reality".
The next Westminster government will need to fill a shortfall of £33 billion in the public finances unless it's willing to introduce a fresh round of severe austerity the resolution foundation said.
Last month the International Monetary Fund warned of a £30 billion financial Westminster hole after the general election.
The Institute of Fiscal studies said that both Labour and the Tories were ducking the hard choices that they would face after the Westminster general election, leaving voters operating in a knowledge vacuum.
UK people have expectations that Labour will quickly improve things if they win the general election but Labour say they are keeping to the Tory fiscal rules about borrowing reducing and Keir Starmers Labour also say that income tax, Vat, NI will not increase.
If Labour wins the Westminster general election and public services don't improve substantially after 5 years then the mainly English people may turn back to the Tories or even worse a Reform Tory coalition government.
The Scottish people haven't voted by a majority for the Tories since 1955, yet keep getting Tory governments and policies.
With 544 English Westminster MPs and 57 Scottish Westminster MPs, Westminster is effectively the English parliament.
For 72 years of the last 100 years there have been Tory Westminster governments.
In an independent Scotland the Scottish people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not governed by the government that a neighbouring country voted for.

There is no point in talking about rejoining the EU until it's possible to do so. All that would do is damage their chance of winning the GE. One of the criteria the EU have for joining is political support of all the main parties in that country for joining. As long as the Tories are threatening to pull us out again if they gain power we will not be granted membership. We either have to totally crush them or get them on side. Personally I would prefer the crushing option but I really don't see that happening.
The first steps toward rejoining has to be 1, media reform and 2, electoral reform.

Many EU nations are now coming to the conclusion that the Brussels elite have become far too powerful and are kicking back at them. I see reform for the EU on the horizon with a return to economic cooperation between European nations with far less power held in Brussels ( a new EEC if you like ) . For the U.K. rejoining such an organisation would be far more acceptable.

I want the Tories out but I don't want a Labour Government with a huge majority . I remember Tony Blair using his landslide majorities to introduce tuition fees and to send troops into Iraq and Afghanistan because his majority allowed him to do this without scrutiny . I'm in favour of PR and would like to see the larger parties having to build consensus with smaller parties to get legislation past . Enough of this combatative politics that we've seen with Thatcher, Blair and Johnson it's only lead to people feeling disillusioned and ignored

Surely you must see by now that the EU won't even *consider* thinking about letting the UK back until it can see solid, bipartisan support in UK politics for rejoining. With the Tories, Reform and the DUP vehemently opposed to this, the risk of a change in UK politics leading to a second Brexit is simply too great for the EU to waste time on the UK.

It has to be a long boring road to recovery and it will be useful if the electorate can be kept impartially informed of how things are going. A few years of a still tough economy and many voters will have forgotten the carnage that 14 years of exploitation by the Keystone conmen has inflicted.

When the Tories are unpopular, voters won't publicly admit voting for Tories, but in the anonymity of the polling booth, they vote for them anyway. Hopefully, this time the gap is too big to overturn public opinion. Unfortunately, Tories always do better than expected.

The current Tory party is going to get a kicking from its former supporters because of acts of hypocrisy and lack of morality by the Tory hierarchy. This is not to say that they have lost their faith in traditional Tory values……. Just the ability of the current Tory party to deliver those policies. Most know that the Tory party needs to re-organise and find its moral compass and they can only do this with a clear message from their supporters that they have to up their game. Most disaffected Tory voters realise that a period of government by the class war and envy obsessed Labour Party will be the only way to recover the Tory party and come back in five years time to form the next government when the high tax and anti aspirational Labour Party punishes all those who work hard. I fear for the next five years as the only credible Labour policy is the line that Wes Streeting is taking with the NHS but unfortunately I predict he will be overthrown by left wingers who care more for political purity than for pragmatic healthcare delivery.

To have any chance Labour need to throw everything (including the kitchen sink) and rule out nothing (customs union etc.) to fix the economy.
They do not have the time to play political games trying to keep Brexit voters happy.
Without a strong growing economy they will be out by the following election or forced into a joint government with the Lib Dems.

Some people are just very slow learners. Better late than never. That said, the main alternative available to the voters of England, is "changed" Labour.
So changed, if fact, Starmer has abandoned the principles Labour were formed under and actively pursued Tory voters.
To be fair to him, under FPTP, what choice has he had? England votes either Tory, or Tory-lite. The English won't have it any other way. Blair knew it. It's even more the case now.
For Labour isn't quite as anti-Tory, in terms of fiscal policy, as it seems.
If the English vote Labour because they feel the Tories have left them, so be it.
It's just a parallel as to why Labour lost Scotland.
