Papyrus's, too. I think it was left out because while "the song that might play when you fight sans" is on the OST, it's not in the game. Though tbh it would have been funny to put it in here with a screenshot of sans's fight.
I heard some folks say that Heartache was in Asgore's theme, but I literally didn't hear it UNTIL this video. No joke. Such a depressing theme and a honestly depressing fight that I never thought to reach deep into it and find it for myself.
I never played the game, so I'd only heard it in Asgore. I had no idea it played during Toriel's fight and it hits way different with that knowledge...
I like to think of the ruins one as a sort of Mt. Ebott/monster race theme since it only appears in larger overworld areas and moments that have significance to all monsters.
If I remember correctly, that acronym stands for: Bird That Carries You Over A Disproportionately Small Gap. I don't know if I got that right, but if I did, I'm gonna pop off.
It’s funny seeing people complaining about “Undertale in Undertale” and “His Theme in His Theme” when it’s just showing what part of the song has the leitmotif.
Because I've been more into Homestuck lately, I haven't been active in the Undertale fandom for a LOOOONG while, and coming back to listen to some Undertale music just makes me wanna cry tears of joy. Wow.
this video is SO eye opening. i was aware of all the similarities between certain tracks but this really helped me notice some of the obvious leitmotifs in songs i just thought of as their own identities.
3 observations: 1- I never realised that The Choice is literally the undertale track slowed down 2- I guess the ruins is more the theme for monsters, or the underground as a whole, since it's used by Undyne as the true hero. 3- You got the battle the wrong way around, it's the battle which borrowed it from the dogs ;)
20:17 'Oh my...' is just the very beginning of Shakira's song 'Whenever, wherever' Either funny accident or obscure reference, parts of the lyrics do add on mettaton's character and him beginning to be a popstar. That Shakira song was her global breakthrough after all.
Undertale is a perfect example of how to cleverly use your limits to your advantage. It was mostly made by one man and it would be way too time consuming to make every single song completely original. So he used leitmotifs both as a shortcut and to connect songs to each other in a beautiful and emotional way
13:44 to add to this, it all literally leads to sans’s fighting song, except instead of what is CLEARLY his theme, OUR theme plays instead. Very interesting, personally. Also, spooktune, lol
Are we thinking of the same things? The main melodic motif of Your Best Nightmare (the dissonant, creepy one) doesn't play in Your Best Friend (to my knowledge).
At 14:22, actually, the "Area Theme Intro" is a remix of a song called Doctor from Homestuck, and Doctor is actually a very prominent leitmotif in Homestuck as well (Toby remixed Doctor another time into a song called Penumbra Phantasm which he put in a lot of his Homestuck music). So the Leotmotif is actually called Doctor.
i know this is from two years ago but i just feel the need to say that the area theme intro is reminiscent of gaster’s theme. he was referred to as a doctor.
What meaning do you guys find represented in the main leitmotifs? Here's my analyzation: Undertale: represents truly the heart and soul of the game itself. it's why it appears reoccurring throughout the entire game, during some of the most poignant moments as well as some silly ones. it's why tracks like fallen down, home, hopes and dreams, etc hit so hard, because this leitmotif carries the feeling of the whole game with it. Your Best Friend: represents asriel. we're first introduced to it when meeting flowey, and calls back to it during your best nightmare, finale, and hopes and dreams, because all three are the culmination of asriel/flowey's part on the story. ruins: this is a REALLY interesting one, because it occurs in places i didnt expect and i didnt get why at first. it first appears in the ruins (duh) and then later throughout the beginning of our trek through the underground (waterfall and the areas around it generally). it also features heavily throughout all of undynes themes though, as well as during "don't give up" and "respite". i think this is because "ruins" represents the underground itself, and undyne herself represents sort of the true heart and fighting spirit of the underground. its a subtle but integral theme that i hadn't noticed before, very cool! determination: for such a well known part of undertale, it only occurs in a few places, most notably the game over screen, and in "asgore". its a very distinct callback, and i think it just represents the players determination as a whole. ghost (bassline and melody): this leitmotif is associated most heavily in themes involving napstablook (ghost fight, pathetic house, etc), as well as muffet (spider dance). its hard to say what it represents EXACTLY, but to me it comes across as energetic and playful, and as its associated with some sillier monster characters with no genuine animosity, i think maybe it represents the inherent sort of innocence of most of those living in the underground. theyre just kinda vibin yknow? heartache: as it appears only in heartache itself, and then later in asgore, i think it represents the moral dilemma of being forced to fight when youd rather show mercy, and the strife inherent in toriel and asgores separation as well maybe. papyrus (nyeh heh heh and bonetrousel): represents papyrus

I’m pretty sure it just plays outside her house
Muffet is a ghost CONFIRMED
Lol
+Juan D Baci HELP I CANT LIKE COMMENTS!!!
she's spooky, nonetheless
+Roy Andrey Villanueva Cruz I think it is meant to be a reference to the fact that each of the fights with this leitmotif are "mini-bosses"
In napstablook's house you can find bunch of spiders in corner
Eh? EEEEH?
I remember when I first heard Hopes in Dating Start, on my second playthrough. Surprised me so hard I choked on my drink.
I never realized undyne is playing alphys’ leitmotif on piano, that’s neat
we love our dear lesbians
Alphys' theme being played by Undyne is a really good small detail that is easily missable. My favorite motif of this.
I heard heartache in asgores theme the moment the part played, i didn't hear the second part of heartache though

Toby Fox
Harry Gregson Williams and Marty O'Donnell, as well
Lin-Manuel Miranda
Murry gold
I mean also Wagner but he was a racist asshole so
I’m not sure if this comment thread is dead or not, but Michael Giacchino (hope I spelled that right) is pretty great too
asgores theme seems like a more advanced version of heartache

Death.
Not by glamour, just death.
Kinda sad that you don't have the heartache leitmotifs in any of asriel's themes
I love how connected waterfall/undyne and hotland/alphys are in terms of leitmotifs
Btw the ghost one has a new connection with the mad mew mew theme
I like to think of the ruins one as a sort of Mt. Ebott/monster race theme since it only appears in larger overworld areas and moments that have significance to all monsters.
"Leitmotif undertale in undertale"
Yep , i wasnt sure of this but you confirm all my suspicions
This game is such a masterpiece. The music is a big contributor to that.
The humor, dialogue, needed skills, and animations also count.
Glad I’m not the only one to notice Alphys in BTCYOADSG. I wonder how that bird came to be so determined...
I was so confused with the acronym until you mentioned a bird
That is indeed a long, long acronym.
If I remember correctly, that acronym stands for: Bird That Carries You Over A Disproportionately Small Gap.
I don't know if I got that right, but if I did, I'm gonna pop off.
@@hoitem6500 Yeah you did
@@AcrylFesta It's for a long, long name lmao.
It’s funny seeing people complaining about “Undertale in Undertale” and “His Theme in His Theme” when it’s just showing what part of the song has the leitmotif.
I don’t think people are actually complaining, just pointing out that it’s funny

There's both hope and despair motifs. 10/10.
It's kind of weird that ruins starts in the...ruins, but then is way more heavily used in waterfall and with undyne specifically.
I feel like its the theme for the underground.
Why is it that so often this game's music & story fill me with melancholy
This may sound like a stretch, but IF one were to speed up "Your Best Friend", it would create a melody simliar to the F.U.N song from spongebob. '-'
Slow it down by 600 instead m8

this video is SO eye opening. i was aware of all the similarities between certain tracks but this really helped me notice some of the obvious leitmotifs in songs i just thought of as their own identities.
3 observations:
1- I never realised that The Choice is literally the undertale track slowed down
2- I guess the ruins is more the theme for monsters, or the underground as a whole, since it's used by Undyne as the true hero.
3- You got the battle the wrong way around, it's the battle which borrowed it from the dogs ;)
Me Before playing Undertale: “His theme sounds sweet”
Me after: *cried every time it’s heard*
I love the style of this video holy crap
20:17 'Oh my...' is just the very beginning of Shakira's song 'Whenever, wherever'
Either funny accident or obscure reference, parts of the lyrics do add on mettaton's character and him beginning to be a popstar. That Shakira song was her global breakthrough after all.
Undertale is a perfect example of how to cleverly use your limits to your advantage. It was mostly made by one man and it would be way too time consuming to make every single song completely original. So he used leitmotifs both as a shortcut and to connect songs to each other in a beautiful and emotional way
With all the deltarune stuff, I forgot how much of a masterpiece undertale is.
yall say its lazy but theres no denying that the OST for this game absolutely slaps
"Sans in sans."
"His Theme in His Theme"
"Heartache in Heartache"
"Undertale in Undertale"
it's a leitmotifception
NO SHIT SHERLOCK
"sans." is also in "Song that might play when you fight sans"
That's not even in the game files
but in official soundtrack
a part of "sans." appears in Heartache for 2 seconds
“She’s playing piano” is undyn playing alphy’s song hi I’m about to start crying?!??
The fact that but nobody came sped up is floweys theme is terrifying plus the fact it sounds echoed in a small place
his theme in finale has gotta be one of the sneakiest ones
My mind was effing blown when I finally made that connection
So if His Theme is in Undertale...
Does that mean every version of Undertale has His Theme?
0-0
Someone help me
...........AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!? Toby Fox, this is a TRUE MASTERPIECE!
no, as an unused version of Undertale uses the last part of Once Upon A Time instead
Omg
5 years late but by “Undertale”, they mean the SONG UNDERTALE, not the actual game!!
@@TrulySomeoneits a joke
You got "NGAHHH!!" and "Spear of Justice" backwards, though I don't blame you. They're not exactly polar opposite songs...
"His theme" is such an emotional tune/song
I veryyyyy much agree
I have to say, I love how toby creates two songs, remixes them a million times and they don't even sound similiar. The guy has mad talent.
i get chills. Undertale is such a great game and a big part of my life, that i can't even describe it.
If you take the first two notes out of the beginning line of Megalovania, it's the exact same thing as the first line of Dogsong.
***** Yeah, I found this out on accident. xD

Leitmotif Papyrus is too in Song That Might Play When Fight Sans
The desc says they aren't using songs that are not in the actual game.
I think Bergentruckung has undertale in it. Just listen.
That theme also has ASGORE, and Heartache in it.
ASGORE also has Undyne right at the end, I believe.
I finally found somebody who knows its not Spear of Justice.
i heard it
More like His Theme.
I love how the BATTLE liefmotif's only other uses were in dogsong and temmies :))
can you even watch this without dying from nostalgia
One of the only games that can make u cry when playing through pacifist runs
13:44 to add to this, it all literally leads to sans’s fighting song, except instead of what is CLEARLY his theme, OUR theme plays instead. Very interesting, personally.
Also, spooktune, lol
Your Best Friend and Your Best Nightmare are the same leitmotif, as has been pointed out. Therefore, there's at least one more connection to be made.
+jtheyellow oh, I didn't realise. do you have a video that demonstrates that?
That's obvious tho
Are we thinking of the same things? The main melodic motif of Your Best Nightmare (the dissonant, creepy one) doesn't play in Your Best Friend (to my knowledge).
+Circle Journey who are you replying to?
both, I suppose. I'm trying to figure out where the connection is (or what you define as one), and you both seem to know.
@@asterstrike I don't quite think so... literally it's just false correlation based on notes going up and down which is just very common in many songs
@@sambradley9091 yeah i came around to that conclusion eventually 😭😭
You can also heat the leitmotif heartache (part 1) in Asriel's fight, after he transforms, befor the part when you have to save everyone
“finale” will never fail to give me chills
What meaning do you guys find represented in the main leitmotifs? Here's my analyzation:
Undertale: represents truly the heart and soul of the game itself. it's why it appears reoccurring throughout the entire game, during some of the most poignant moments as well as some silly ones. it's why tracks like fallen down, home, hopes and dreams, etc hit so hard, because this leitmotif carries the feeling of the whole game with it.
This comment is SOOO underrated
