Then once it releases it snowballs into the most beloved indie title since Minecraft, reaching through almost every tendril of the pop culture consciousness. Reviews, lets players, sales, it all rockets to unfathomable proportions, far exceeding that $5000 dream it began as. And now, merely 4 years after its release, after fan covers of the soundtrack, animations, fanfictions, artworks, a whole community of fans worldwide, a full scale Orchestral performance of YOUR music, composed in your own home, is created to honor & celebrate your piece of art you poured your heart and soul into. A Japanese game influenced a young boy and changed his life, he then made a game that took Japan by storm and changed many lives. The love was returned.
Everyone's talking about how much they love undertale, but nobody is talking about how much these musicians had to practice for all this, hats off to you ladies and gents
It's the fifth anniversary of the game after all, it's obvious that the majority of the discussion is gonna be people showing their appreciation for it, I don't think anyone is playing down the work of the musicians by doing that. That being said, I do agree they deserve all the praise in the world for this amazing performance. I clapped alone in my room multiple times during the concert.
I mean that goes without saying but of course the people that poured themselves into this performance have our highest respect and gratitude for it. They really seemed into it
I was so inspired by this, that I spent all my savings to go to Tokyo (from the U.K.) on my own this month to see Kota Kawai (the lead violin who put this Undertale concert together) in person. He was performing the game Ihatovo Monogatari. The staff told him someone has come from the U.K. to see him and he came out to talk to me after the performance (I had a translator). I handmade him a little Toby Fox dog and he seemed very grateful for my gift. He was really nice and I felt like I was in the presence of someone truly special. ❤️

Just remember: Toby’s way of transcribing the post-genocide consequences into orchestra form was to put a 2 minute rest of absolutely nothing followed by an uneasily empty start menu.
What’s even more impressive is that that means they literally have no conductor, and yet their timing between songs is impeccable. Even if it is a click track that’s still insane

Far more than thousands, millions. He probably is what got many people into their fandom/oc stuff. The Undertale Community when it was still in it's early years burned brighter than it's Cousin, Homestuck did even with it's infamous fans and unsealed face paint.

Two years ago, when this concert was streamed for the first time, I was in a terribly awful situation. I was trapped in a very toxic home and genuinely couldn't see myself surviving even one more year. But I remember this concert comforting me so much back then, it was a rare highlight of usually very dark days. Two years later, I'm free and safe. I survived and I wanted to come back here to say it and to thank Toby, Undertale and this concert for being a few of the things that helped me survive in their own ways. In spite of everything, I'm here. In spite of everything, it's still me. ❤

Mad respect to the whole entire orchestra especially the concert master. They did the whole thing without a conductor and they are all still in time with each other. Playing with a click in your ear can be quite tricky especially if they want to do any musical rubato. Kudos to all the musicians!

I absolutely adore how they would start on the Nyeh-Heh-Heh motif, get to the point where you think they're about to jump into Bonetrousle and then just drop right back into the Snowdin Motif. Great parallel to the sporadic nature of Papyrus' encounters throughout Snowdin in the game and also a wonderful little tease.

Most geniuses aren’t recognized until after they’ve died. Toby is a modern day genius. HE WROTE FOR AN ORCHESTRA WITHOUT ANY TRAINING. The instrumentation is that of a savant.
@@Smitologyyou’re right, it wasn’t! the original arraignments of course were, but transposing it into being fit for a full orchestra was done entirely by Kota Kawai, who i believe is the man we see conducting at the very start/playing violin after!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate what Undertale and Toby Fox has been able to accomplish? Undertale could have just been a random game that people would quickly forget about on Kickstarter but it wasn't. Not only was a fanbase created, it even managed to survive for a whole 5 years despite being a standalone game. The best part is that Undertale was created by a single guy, Toby Fox (With the help of Temmie Chang of course). The popularity of Undertale has even lead to some amazing things: this concert, Sans in Smash, and so much more! Congratulations Toby, you pretty much did the impossible!
Kinda a personal story, in 2013 I was a baby and was super into homestuck, and one-day homestucks creator was visiting a comic festival nearby! In the same building, there were a few dudes sorta vibing near a piano. I didn't really pay attention. I found out later one of those dudes was Toby! It's super mind-boggling for me, Toby was probably already working on Undertale at the time. As an adult now, I recognize that everyone I pass by has their personal projects and aspirations. I still struggle to comprehend it sometimes.

Can we talk about how AMAZING the Genocide Route representation in this concert was It starts off with "Menu (Full)" playing after Last Goodbye, which is odd, but then you realize what it represents... the True Reset. This theory is then immediately confirmed by the very somber performance of Heartache and Bonetrousle. And then this is when things truly become hype, because Battle Against A True Hero starts playing, which is then followed up by Power of NEO. After those songs, there's only one thing left they could possibly do, and they couldn't possibly skip out on it....... and they DIDN'T. MEGALOVANIA starts playing, and this is where it gets real, because this composition of Megalovania is so, so, AMAZING. It was MASTERFULLY composed, and is a PHENOMENAL way to end off the Concert. After Megalovania is finished.... there's nothing but wind, it's exactly what it was like in Undertale when Chara erases the timeline. After a few minutes.... the basic Menu theme is played. You restored your file by giving up your Soul. The way Genocide was done in this Concert was just, absolutely perfect, it's honestly just as beautiful as Undertale itself, and this concert was the PERFECT way to celebrate the 5th Anniversary. Thank you so much for such an amazing game, Toby.
I actually never would have picked up on this lol, nice catch! Although there's one small distinction I want to make: it's an arrangement of Megalovania rather than a composition. The composition of Megalovania is just Megalovania; the adaptation for orchestra is an arrangement. Not that what you said is any less true for the composition.
Orchestras make me think about how each person there has their own life and music career. Each person practiced for so long, learning the instrument they liked, building their skills in the way they liked. Each person has a whole story, but the only thing that we see is the result.

I've never realized just how big of a video game Undertale is. Imagine starting a kickstarter and saying "eh, we'll see where it goes" and then it becomes one of the most beloved and revered games of the 21st century. It got 10x it's Kickstarter goal. It was released to international critical praise. It was released on multiple AAA devices. An entire orchestra played these pieces of music. And the fans still love it, 5 entire years after it came out. All from a simple Kickstarter. Thank you Toby. You have filled me with DETERMINATION.
Undertale was one of the 23 games that I had backed on Kickstarter way back when. Out of all of those pledges, the only games that weren't abandoned/canceled were this, Mighty No. 9, and Shovel Knight.
Undertale is the most influential indie game of the 2010s People might initially say that should be Minecraft, but Minecraft ceased to be an indie game once Mojang was bought by Microsoft. This leaves the title to Undertale, as the intellectual property remains independent of major AAA company control
i always believed the saddest part of playing undertale was knowing u would never experience anything even CLOSE to the feeling of playing it for the first time but honestly this concert is the closest ive felt to that feeling again,, IVE BEEN HAVING LITERAL GOOSEBUMPS FOR 2 HOURS STRAIGHT PEOPLE!!
Maybe if you replay it in 10 years you will feel a mix between a new experience and a weird indescriptible nostalgia. Maybe it will feel like if you were playing it for the first time again but sadder. Is that happy news?
I feel bad that I wasn't fully able to experience my first time playing Undertale. I had watched DanTDM play it a few months beforehand. But still, nothing can compare to the first time I ever played Undertale.
Guys I'll be honest I did not listen to every track, and the core was the first one I actually noticed the electric instrument. I don't think I would even be able to tell the electric piano apart from the electric guitar. Literally only made this comment for funnies
This game gave me three things: Determination, a character I resemble a lot in real life and memes. This is one of the games that I played for a while and enjoyed myself the most in. The genius ideas behind every character, design and unique desicions to make each reset completely different from the last. This is what makes me keep my faith that gaming will only get better with time.

It's the fifth anniversary of the game after all, it's obvious that the majority of the discussion is gonna be people showing their appreciation for it, I don't think anyone is playing down the work of the musicians by doing that. That being said, I do agree they deserve all the praise in the world for this amazing performance. I clapped alone in my room multiple times during the concert.
I mean that goes without saying but of course the people that poured themselves into this performance have our highest respect and gratitude for it. They really seemed into it
I was so inspired by this, that I spent all my savings to go to Tokyo (from the U.K.) on my own this month to see Kota Kawai (the lead violin who put this Undertale concert together) in person. He was performing the game Ihatovo Monogatari. The staff told him someone has come from the U.K. to see him and he came out to talk to me after the performance (I had a translator). I handmade him a little Toby Fox dog and he seemed very grateful for my gift. He was really nice and I felt like I was in the presence of someone truly special. ❤️
That must have been an absolutely AMAZING experience. His orchestrations for this were marvelous.

Two years ago, when this concert was streamed for the first time, I was in a terribly awful situation. I was trapped in a very toxic home and genuinely couldn't see myself surviving even one more year. But I remember this concert comforting me so much back then, it was a rare highlight of usually very dark days.
Two years later, I'm free and safe. I survived and I wanted to come back here to say it and to thank Toby, Undertale and this concert for being a few of the things that helped me survive in their own ways. In spite of everything, I'm here. In spite of everything, it's still me. ❤

Mad respect to the whole entire orchestra especially the concert master. They did the whole thing without a conductor and they are all still in time with each other. Playing with a click in your ear can be quite tricky especially if they want to do any musical rubato. Kudos to all the musicians!

revisiting this concert after almost 4 years, and it still utterly rends me just as much as it did during the quarantine. there's nothing quite like hearing your favorite game soundtrack remastered in such an incredible way. biggest thanks to all the musicians that came together to create this masterpiece, and of course, toby fox himself.

Most geniuses aren’t recognized until after they’ve died. Toby is a modern day genius. HE WROTE FOR AN ORCHESTRA WITHOUT ANY TRAINING. The instrumentation is that of a savant.
I think the arrangement for orchestra wasn't done by Toby, not to take away from his amazing musical genius

Can we just take a moment to appreciate what Undertale and Toby Fox has been able to accomplish? Undertale could have just been a random game that people would quickly forget about on Kickstarter but it wasn't. Not only was a fanbase created, it even managed to survive for a whole 5 years despite being a standalone game. The best part is that Undertale was created by a single guy, Toby Fox (With the help of Temmie Chang of course). The popularity of Undertale has even lead to some amazing things: this concert, Sans in Smash, and so much more! Congratulations Toby, you pretty much did the impossible!

Kinda a personal story,
in 2013 I was a baby and was super into homestuck, and one-day homestucks creator was visiting a comic festival nearby! In the same building, there were a few dudes sorta vibing near a piano. I didn't really pay attention.
I found out later one of those dudes was Toby!
It's super mind-boggling for me, Toby was probably already working on Undertale at the time. As an adult now, I recognize that everyone I pass by has their personal projects and aspirations. I still struggle to comprehend it sometimes.

Can we talk about how AMAZING the Genocide Route representation in this concert was
It starts off with "Menu (Full)" playing after Last Goodbye, which is odd, but then you realize what it represents... the True Reset. This theory is then immediately confirmed by the very somber performance of Heartache and Bonetrousle. And then this is when things truly become hype, because Battle Against A True Hero starts playing, which is then followed up by Power of NEO. After those songs, there's only one thing left they could possibly do, and they couldn't possibly skip out on it....... and they DIDN'T. MEGALOVANIA starts playing, and this is where it gets real, because this composition of Megalovania is so, so, AMAZING. It was MASTERFULLY composed, and is a PHENOMENAL way to end off the Concert. After Megalovania is finished.... there's nothing but wind, it's exactly what it was like in Undertale when Chara erases the timeline. After a few minutes.... the basic Menu theme is played. You restored your file by giving up your Soul.
The way Genocide was done in this Concert was just, absolutely perfect, it's honestly just as beautiful as Undertale itself, and this concert was the PERFECT way to celebrate the 5th Anniversary. Thank you so much for such an amazing game, Toby.

Orchestras make me think about how each person there has their own life and music career. Each person practiced for so long, learning the instrument they liked, building their skills in the way they liked. Each person has a whole story, but the only thing that we see is the result.

I've never realized just how big of a video game Undertale is. Imagine starting a kickstarter and saying "eh, we'll see where it goes" and then it becomes one of the most beloved and revered games of the 21st century.
It got 10x it's Kickstarter goal.
It was released to international critical praise.
It was released on multiple AAA devices.
An entire orchestra played these pieces of music.
And the fans still love it, 5 entire years after it came out.
All from a simple Kickstarter.

Undertale was one of the 23 games that I had backed on Kickstarter way back when. Out of all of those pledges, the only games that weren't abandoned/canceled were this, Mighty No. 9, and Shovel Knight.

People might initially say that should be Minecraft, but Minecraft ceased to be an indie game once Mojang was bought by Microsoft. This leaves the title to Undertale, as the intellectual property remains independent of major AAA company control
AND You travel to battle Sakurai in Super Smash Bros., beat him, and have your character get put into one of the most iconic games of all time.

i always believed the saddest part of playing undertale was knowing u would never experience anything even CLOSE to the feeling of playing it for the first time but honestly this concert is the closest ive felt to that feeling again,, IVE BEEN HAVING LITERAL GOOSEBUMPS FOR 2 HOURS STRAIGHT PEOPLE!!
Maybe if you replay it in 10 years you will feel a mix between a new experience and a weird indescriptible nostalgia. Maybe it will feel like if you were playing it for the first time again but sadder. Is that happy news?

I feel bad that I wasn't fully able to experience my first time playing Undertale. I had watched DanTDM play it a few months beforehand. But still, nothing can compare to the first time I ever played Undertale.
I like how for the CORE track they finally bit the bullet and said "fine, we'll put *one* electric instrument in there"

Guys I'll be honest I did not listen to every track, and the core was the first one I actually noticed the electric instrument. I don't think I would even be able to tell the electric piano apart from the electric guitar. Literally only made this comment for funnies
This game gave me three things: Determination, a character I resemble a lot in real life and memes. This is one of the games that I played for a while and enjoyed myself the most in. The genius ideas behind every character, design and unique desicions to make each reset completely different from the last. This is what makes me keep my faith that gaming will only get better with time.
