Anyone that remembers Ralph McTell from the 60's London folk clubs will know that the old lady carrying her home in two carrier bags that he sings of was, I think, Old Meg, who was a sad, regular sight around Soho in those far off days.....Never fails to give goose bumps, this song.

I remember my first trip to Europe. I had never seen homeless people before. I was shocked. Now they are everywhere. I try to carry some cash just to give to them. I ran away from college when I was 17, with 50 cents in my pocket. This was back in 1970. People were so kind to me.

So true, now it's also the streets of DUBLIN...I think its so Sad.. and there's so much greed in the WORLD....I always give, and share a chat, I'm told by many, people don't even show the a glance, we are all brothers and sisters, we should at least care....GOD, BLESS THEM ALL...X

Never heard this song in all my 58 years on this earth. It's about time!!! What a beautiful song. My God. Respect to the artist for this apparently classic tune. So Beautiful. So eloquently written and sung. The world needs a big group hug and we all need to sing the same song. Peace and Love.

+JoeStunner Yeah Joe ,me too , wonderful song. Depressing video - sadly not just London , most major cities in the world have homelessness, thanks to greedy governments and Royal families. Sadly in the modern world buying nuclear weapons and holidays for the Queen take priority over the common people....

'The man outside the seaman's mission' says it all, the forgotten Merchant Navy. without whom there would be a London as we know it, people can't fight without food, planes can't fly without petrol all brought in by the Merchant Navy of which I was proud to be a forgotten hero. Take time to visit the MN memorial at Tower Hill and see how many thousands died with hardly any mean of defending themselves, it only took one torpedo for the crew of a tanker to die a horrible death.
    Gone but not forgotten

I spent fifty years at sea in the Merchant Navy - and saw it go from 80% of the world´s shipping down to about 4% after we joined the EU - and during the Second World War we had more casualties than the army, the navy and the airforce put together - and were awarded not a single medal...!

Have you seen the old man
    In the closed-down market
    Kicking up the paper,
    With his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
Hand held loosely at his side
    Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
    She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
    In the all night cafe
    At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man sitting there on his own
    Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
    Each tea lasts an hour
    Then he wanders home alone
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
Don't say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old man
    Outside the Seaman's Mission
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
    In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
    For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

And yet loneliness affects millions of well off people who live in mansions. Seeing others on the streets living in appalling conditions cannot turn on a switch in a lonely persons mind just because they see many living in agony. Loneliness and depression hold each others hands and even a warm bed and full stomach at night cannot compensate a lonely and empty mind.

I love the photographs you've chosen to accompany this song. I've always loved this song but you've raised a new awareness with your choice of images. Well done and I hope that many more people appreciate the message you are spreading. It's a very sad world we live in when the songs that entertain us also portray so much human misery and no one really seems to care.

Britons! We have been through thick and thin and together we stand, together we can do anything, we need to rebuild our wonderful nation to the standard it used to be. Together, united as one, liberal, socialist, all are equal in our nation. A nation of greatness, technology, advancement, intellectuals. Improve yourself, to improve your nation. Let patriotism flow through you for our nation. Unite hand in hand as our ancestors did. For we were and still can be, great.

But then I heard the voice of God and I quit abusing drugs and alcohol and I asked Jesus into my heart ❤ and since 1986 I am not alone anymore. It can happen to you too, if you want. A return to the nation state and England's legacy of freedom and independence is needed for the rest of Europe to follow. Brexit is the beginning, if the masters don't strangle it in the cradle.

A lot of people commenting have scarcely ever slept out on the streets in their lives. Nor have they gone up and down on night buses. It is, actually, quite invigorating to be out and is preferred by quite a substantial number of people as a way of life. When you are on the streets you are not just a number.

Don't say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
Show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old man
    Outside the seaman's mission?
    Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears
    In our winter city
The rain cries a little pity
    For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
So, how can you tell me you're lonely?
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
Show you something to make you change your mind

Nicht gerade ein Gassenhauer, aber ein Lied mit sehr viel Tiefgang - sehr schöne nachdenkliche Ballade!

in 1975, our hippyish french teacher, whom cos he was so easy going, didn't get much attention during his lessons but at school assembly one unusual morning (maybe the headmaster was away ) the guy Mr Bidmead, had his acoustic & did this song to audience of punks & herberts - when he finished, you could of heard a pin drop - followed by loud applause! new forest

He would probably get the sack if he did it these days, for deviating from the curriculum or some sort of bullshit.

Sad times this song bought back memories when I was a youth and you saw people living the way they did on street corners it's so so sad we live in a country that's not poor this shouldn't be happening. These people need help and if I could afford to help them I would with pleasure. Sad

This should be sung as an anthem in schools, churches, caring for others is what life is REALLY all about. We are a global family. There is no room for violence or aggression.

I was a student at Warwick Uni in the old days when as a special,, Ralph on stage... wonderful. Yes it goes back a few years
Some pillock worse for wear on boose shouted at him a number of times until Ralph said, from the stage, I'll meet you outside bastard.
The pillock melted...but the respect for Ralph was a sensation. From that day I love this guy
I really annoyed my wife one day when I saw a disheveled man begging, I sat down beside him and we talked for maybe an hour.......That man could have been me...there but for fortune.
THEN I really upset marital harmony as I gave all our shopping !!!! and said to wife well we can buy it again....he cant.
Ralph you have stirred in people the care and love for others....I do wish it was the same today

    Ralph's second recording of this.
From his album "Streets"..he wanted to do it this way ever since his '69 original, which was a solo, almost a demo..the accompaniment here hits the spot, just perfect, and sadly it's hard to find this best version these days..listen to the beauty.

A man is only poor with the wrong friends. Better alone than in bad company. A society will be judge by how the most vulnerable members are treated.
