  • Highway 31, as a lot of Aussies would know, is Australia's busiest highway...the Hume...it runs between Melbourne & Sydney, and, at night, trucks rule...it carries an astonishing amount of freight every year.
This song was released in Australia in 1969 on a Philips 45, BF-456.
It has since been re-issued a multitude of times on the Fable label.
The original issue charted in Brisbane (# 34) and Johnny's home town of Melbourne (# 20).
The black and white scan of the '31' sign hails from 1954...it was Australia's first National Highway Marker...it had button reflectors so it could be seen at night.
These days, National Highway Markers are commonplace.
This has always been a favourite...I was on holidays in Victoria when it was a hit, and I bought a copy of the original blue label Philips 45 in a record shop in Wangaratta.

Great old song. Always loved when he would come to Mount Isa when I was a child, My parents would take every time. Great memories.

Champion stuff!!! Dad played all Johnny's songs when I was a kid. I just can't pick a favourite. If you really forced me, I might say Readymix Revenge; those lyrics ran riot in my little-boy-mind. Would love to be able to say g'day & thanks, to Johnny; where ever he is these days...

Highway 31 was in the news recently! They have finally finished the duplication of the entire length from Melbourne to Sydney! Taking almost 50 years to do so!

@@blueycarlton On the Go Set National Charts in early 1970, it didn't make the top 40. I knew it was popular in Melbourne as I remember it played on the radio regularly in Jan/Feb 1970.

A reference book, 30 Years of Hits, Melbourne Top 40 Research 1960-1990, has it making it to No12. I remember it was played constantly on the radio stations, it must have charted!

What! Hitchhiking up Highway 31, looking for woman to take his mind off the one he left in Melbourne.
