    I just finished replacing my seals a few days ago and this video was a great help. My smart car is 2013 and there were a couple differences like star bit size, but not any major differences. I don't have a rechargeable ratchet so I found buying a stubby ratchet helped in a couple tight spaces. It did take me quite a bit of time being that I have never done any work on a car before. I used paint markers to make sure what bolts went back in their proper places. Someone in the future will see it and laugh, but it worked for me so who cares.

    I can’t thank you enough for this video. I was able to change the valve cover gasket and spark plug seals on my 2008 Smart. The spark plug seals were old and oil was getting into the spark plug chambers. While it was a pain in the ass to work on this due to the tight and cramped space, at least I had some direction. I also wanted to add a few points from my experience:
    1. I had to remove the heat shield on the exhaust manifold because a bolt fell into it while I was trying to securing the secondary valve from under the car. It turned out to be easier to work with the shield removed.
    2. I had a torque wrench that I bought from Harbor Freight a while ago. It is 1/4” drive and is small enough wrench to torque the valve covers. The wrench only shows inch-pounds so I torqued the bolts to 110 inch-pounds.
    3. I used an empty egg carton to sort out the bolts, which was very helpful.
    At the end of the day it feels great to get this done and probably saved me a thousand or two at the dealer.

      I am getting misfires at high rpm, I wonder if it's the oil sipping in to sparkplugs.

    hello, i did this job and my gasket is leaking right in the lower corner on the passenger side of the valve cover. everything is tighten and i made sure it went the right way. do you have any idea why would it be leaking? i bought the same gasket you put on. if you can give me some insight i woudl really aprreciate it.

    • @ColinLeung
      @ColinLeung  Рік тому +1

      Hello, thanks for the question, and sorry to hear that it's leaking. Were you able to remove every piece of the old gasket from the cover and top of the engine? There may be residual debris causing a leak. I'd suggest wiping both parts with alcohol to ensure the surface is clean.
      Does the cover and top of engine look warped at any location?
      Did you apply a bead of RTV sealant before applying the gasket? It should help compensate for variations on the surface, and provide a tighter seal.
      I would double check that all of the bolts are tight.
      If you do everything above and it still leaks then I would apply a generous amount of RTV sealant on the valve cover and top of engine between the gasket where it's leaking. The RTV sealant alone should stop the leak.

The original part numbers you have all match mine and valve cover gasket on rockauto is exactly what you have, but I can't confirm the tube seals as no analog comes up anywhere and Smart isn't even listed (mostly Mitsubishi Cars match MD198128). Thank you in advance!

      @@ColinLeung Thank you for the excellent video. I looked this up as I've been getting terrible gas milage. We're talking as low as 20mpg around town. So I just did my plugs hoping it was them and have oil on the middle plug and coil boot. Would you say the decreased milage could be attributed to that or could it be something else? It's an '08.
