Do not use sand paper or emery cloth on the sparkplug tube. Use carb cleaner. You don't want it all scratched or reduced in size or it will leak again... also, put the new seals in the freezer so they shrink and you don't have to hammer them in.
I have a 2001 Passat with the same problem you guys make things so simple to follow step by step to do the job right keep all those amazing videos. Great place to purchase quality auto parts.
The other videos I watched had me almost convinced I had a blow head gasket. Thanks for confirming my original thought . You saved me from anxiety and .... my car😀
In older videos of older engines with this oil problem, some guys pull the spark plug tubes out to seal them at the bottom, too. However the more recent videos on newer engines, mechanics do as you did, leaving the spark plug tubes in place, assuming the leak is at the seal on top. Can you tell us when you'd pay more attention to the tube seal at the bottom? The second question is the perennial one, which way do you decide to mount the seals? Can they go in upside down, and how do you know you got it right? Normally I put the spring inside, in deference to the principle that the higher pressure side should shut the seal. However some engines have significant crankcase vacuum, so wouldn't the seal position be opposite?
Just did the sparkplugs on a 14 WRX and noticed #3 was wet. Figured it was the seal so glad a lot of others are saying the same. Just H4 instead of V or I so this will be a fun job!
2:57 that new seal doesn't look seated all the way in. Then using sandpaper on that tube w/o anything to prevent the abrasive particles falling into the engine... that made me cringe.
What prevents your engine from creating abrasive particles from getting into your oil? I know the oil reduces friction but it doesn't stop it. Before the abrasive particles get trapped by the filter they're flowing around with your engine oil.
I saw the same thing. Also, when he took the seal out, he knock the flat screw driver in to separate the seal from the valve cover. I can see the damage on the cover. He should use a pick to take seal out without touching any metal.
I had this issue with my Honda 5 years ago. Did the same thing and it helped. Found out at that time a mechanic that did valve adjustment didn't place the valve cover back correctly and the seals were connected wrong :(
I just did mine on my Honda and they went on nicely, but then wouldn't flush so I had to go in there and "aid" it into position but still has me worried. I'll find out when it's all back together lol
Use Vaseline on the gaskets to install. Easy job. I had oil on 3 plugs. One plug had the tip burned off. Explains the rough running. I soaked up as much oil as i could with rags and paper towel. The rest drained into the cylinder when i removed the spark plug. . I cranked the engine BEFORE i reinstalled the plug wires. That pushed any oil into the exhaust pipe. Smoked a little.
Thanks soooooooo much! You confirmed my problem. I was for SURE that my head gasket was blown. I was getting oil in the spark plug well but no coolant mixture. Thanks so very much!!!!!
I am going to be doing my plugs on my first Gen Mazda 3. I’ve done oil changes tire changes but never spark plugs. I’ve been told it’s just as easy as a oil change. Take my time and learn. I’m excited about it. From this video I know that there is more that I need to look for which is good. Thanks for the video.
Be sure to let the car cool all the way down or you risk breaking a spark plug. Put a little anti seize on the new plug threads so they are easy to get out next time. Definitely easier than an oil change....have fun.
Thanks bro. Videos like this give people the confidence they didn't know they had to begin making repairs on their own vehicles and save themselves thousands of dollars in the process. I do have a question though: When you removed the intake and valve cover, why did you end up having to use an air gun and a rag to clean the oil out of the wells? Couldn't you have just simply wiped them out while they were off of the block?
I found oil in one sparl plug cylinder today on my 08 LS460. I proceeded to remove the exterior mounted seals to find cracks in all 8 of them. I'll pick up a set in the morning, blow out the oil into a rag (thanks to you) and ensure everything is dry before re installing new seals, plugs and coils. I don't see any reason (in my case) to remove the valve cover, as it's not leaking on either bank. Thanks for a sweet tip, a new sub.
Thank you for this excellent video. My 2004 Honda Odyessy was losing power, so I started to change spark plugs and found the spark plug Wells in back of engine only were full of oil. Now I am going to replace the gaskets of the rear valve cover to solve this problem. I personally believe the spark plug well tube grommets must've been installed backwards. I wished you had spent more time on the proper installation of those grommets. But thank you again.
In my very short mechanical experience, I've noticed that Nissans are notorious for this problem. Had an 02' Sentra. Oil flooded the ignition coils. Currently have a 2010 Altima 2DR. Same problem. If your're looking at a used Nissan, make sure to check the coil chamber.
Thx for the video. I just saw oil in the same bank today and was worried and confused because I know my truck doesn't smoke and the plug was dry inside. Thanks for the tip!
How about cleaning the oil out of the tube before removing the plug so your cylinder isn't filled with oil and you end up with a hydro-locked cylinder? Also, I recommend using a plastic tool to remove the spark plug gaskets, or as a last resort, a flat-blade screwdriver with its blade covered in duct tape to prevent scratching your valve cover and returning to square one with oil in the tubes.
Do you have any videos on how to replace/remove the spark plug tubes themselves? I think this is where my problem lies, beneath or under the tube. They need to be _resealed_ at the bottom or just replaced.
Very helpful, I was trying to get those spark plug tube seals out for like 20 minutes and then it's like "GDI, now I gotta look this up with oil hands!" Very helpful, and minimal damage to the valve cover 🤷 it ain't pretty but it works.
Thank my friend for showing me about. T the seal they had told me the motor was no good God bless you 🙏 I wish I knew a good mechanic like you to fix my pt cruser jess San Antonio Texas thanks God bless
Thanks for the video. I have a Range Rover 2003 HSE and got a Engine light telling me that Bank 2 was misfiring. I changed all the spark plugs on bank 2 , still was getting a rough idle and a throttle Position Sensor code P0221 & P0120. towed it to my mechanic with diagnosis was as you mentioned in this video. Valve Gaskets and Tube seals. So I' going to have them replaced. Thanks.
This is the third or fourth time I've watched one of your videos. All of them were informative And easy to follow. I don't know if I ever followed Any for a repair, but I don't retain a great deal these days, so I may have. Today I got around to subscribing and liking your channel as a token of my appreciation. I have a little four-cylinder 1.8 DOH With oil in ONE spark plug well. Of course since it is dung i'd rather not deal with it is the number two plug. I think the universe for its sense of humor. Reckon I need to take the valve cover gasket off to access the overhangs at the bottom of the spark plug and replace the valve cover gasket as well. Any thoughts by anyone?
Changed Plugs today on a 2014 GMC Terrain. Similarly no Codes beforehand. Spark Plug Well #1 (Far Left, looking from Front toward Engine... Or Passenger Side Far Right) was unexpectedly swimming in Oil. Not happy that it's maybe a bad seal. Will continue to monitor. With the Engine currently at 115K miles I'm not sure exactly when the seal failed. Hopefully it's just been an extremely slow leak over a few years... So the repair might be able to be babied for a time. Have been running Valvoline's Restore and Protect for a few weeks. While it isn't their "Max-Life" High Mileage Oil, hopefully it will/does have some Gasket/Ring conditioners and can be kept under control.
bro , my life is amazing again, my dirtbike just stay all summer in garage because it won't rev, and my sparkplug have oil on it! I tought my engine go bad, but now, I'M So HaPPy!!!
My son's 2005 Mazda 3 has a misfire on 4, and 2 codes for lean conditions. Figured I'd change the plug. I changed the plug and coil pack yr but the code never really went off. Starting to drive more rough. Considering trying to change those seals. Thanks for the video
Thanks a lot! Currently have some misfire and had the car at the Mechanic. Found that there's some oil on my sparkplugs. Will change the Valve cover gasket and that should fix it! The misfire continues despite cleaning the MAF sensor and throttlebody :(.
Thanks bro really appreciate this info & this might be happening to my 2020 Honda Civic Sport. Either the gasket(s) might need replacement or I might had overflow it with engine oil. Think even if I went just a lil above the max meter of the engine oil this can overflow into the park plugs?
I am not a pro. It is most likely you do not have to change the ignition coil. If the engine is misfiring change the spark plugs along with what was shown in the video.
Lubricate the top of the spark tubes and nurse the seals over them before snugging down the cover or you risk pinching the seals. That will require a redo with new seals. Ask me how I know.
2001 Toyota Celica GT, I have about 2 inches of oil inside the spark plug chambers, I replaced the valve cover gasket including the tube seals, and my question is how do I get rid of the existing oil inside and then would it help if I used black high heat oil resistant gasket maker around the top of the combustion chambers?
Been trying to troubleshoot and narrow down some bad idling and loss of power. Changed my spark plugs and noticed the plug from 3rd cylinder had a little bit of oil on it... I'm gonna redo the cover gaskets soon when I redo the value lash adjustment.
Finally figured-out this problem on our 1989 Honda Civic 1.5 I noticed that you did not replace the seals on the back 3 cylinders. Redundant for the video?
Just like the dude in this video (hey dude!) I only wanted to change my spark plugs and wires. Found plugs with lots of oil on them. Eww! Since I was that far in, and not knowing what else to do, I installed the new plugs and wires. Of course oil went into the cylinder. I put it all back together and it smoked like crazy! Not unexpected. But did I mess anything up by letting all that oil go into the cylinders and then burning it off by running the engine?
I have a Ford fiesta 2014 model, recently serviced the car(this weekend) after redoing the engine about 10000km ago.. But found oil on two out of three of the spark plugs.. Apparently it can be the PCV valve.. What's your input?
I’m having this issue on my 2013 g37. I have rough idle and hesitation in normal driving conditions. The car doesn’t feel smooth anymore. My main question is would a low amount of oil on the spark plug cause the car to have rough idle and hesitation. I also do hear a little louder Ticking then normal But nothing compared to a rod knock or a lifter tap. I have completed throttlebody cleaning and relearn cleaned, maf sensors, and Replaced one set of spark plugs. Also the car has no engine light or stored codes.
Did you figure out what was wrong? I'm interested because you say there are no code errors. I had a similar issue and replaced ignition coils, but my OBDii did show the misfire. Did you replace ignition coils?
PLEASE HELP! i really need this video for a 4.2l 2003 isuzu ascender/ chevy trailblazer engine! Yalls videos are so useful and i havent been able to find a video for it!
When cleaning out the spark plug hole with compressed air, use a good quality cloth rag. Paper type Rags can come apart and fall into the combustion chamber which is not good.
Or at least have been a bit more caring with it. That was a serious bonk on there. I'd be afraid of ruining anywhere around the gasket. I get they're trying to show what an at home mechanic might be able to do with some common tools, but that scared me when I saw it.
Thanks for the excellent video as usual. I have a similar issue but it appears only my spark plug threads are soaked in oil. Everything else up top seems oil free. I did rub my hand across the gasket material above the spark plug and one of the holes left a very trace amount of shiny stuff on my hand (i hope is oil) also the gaskets did have a shiny appearance at certain angles. Is it possible that it could leak very slow down the sparkplug without leaving a trace up top and gather at the threads? I really want this to just be a valve cover gasket issue as opposed to something huge. Also the car has a very slight misfire at prolonged idle... it doesn't even throw a code but I can feel them.
i had this issue on my 4runner and was causing P0302 code and check engine light . You have to dismantle alot to gain access to the valve cover and if its an older car with lots of rust those blots will be quite challenging to remove.
If you just have a bad valve cover gasket leak and it happened to also leak into the spark plugs but the spark plug themselves are pretty new would you need to replace them still ?
+@miguelcalmo2005 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Yesss Thank you!! I have a 2010 Genny and keep on getting a p0303 I changed out all the spark plugs, ignition coils and TB seal... I even cleaned out the plenum intake... Stupid code won't go away.... I was going to work on the injectors but I'm going to try this instead.... *If anyone has any insight please let me know* ~~ Samantha from Alberta Canada ~~ ☺️
How would i go about cleaning the oil in the spark plug housings without removing them (so the oil doesn’t get into the cylinders) and if I have no air compressor? The housing in my car specifically is very deep
Does anyone have a idea how much this will cost? I'm clueless but learning fast so far I have fixed everything right. Thanks for this video and all the help. God Speed
Is there a way to seal the sparkplug well from a oil leak without removing the head? I found on my envoy there's just too many things to take off to get the intake off just to remove the valve cover. I'm not a mechanic or even a hobby one so I'm not comfortable taking all that off to get to it. I know I'll forget to bolt or hook something back up. I'm between jobs right now and need my envoy for gig work while waiting for a normal 9-5. There has to be a way to atleast temporary seal the gasket through the sparkplug well without removing the valve cover.
What does the price run on a 2006 Chevy HHR mine is burning oil and I'm trying to find out what is the main cause of it and what it will cost to fix . Diagnostic by itself is $150
I have oil all over my spark plugs and coils on my toyota matrix. I took off the valve cover to replace the gasket and the gasket looked pretty good, maybe it was replaced in 2016, idk. But the gaskets on the 2 bolts that go in the middle of the valve cover were rotted away, Could this be where my leak is? I just dont see how gaskets on the outside of the cover can prevent leaks.
I recently hope someone replaced the water pump on their vehicle and the process is doing that when removing the valve cover I found a lot of oil in the 4th cylinder I got all the oil out changed the plug but now the car won't completely turn over this video was helpful but what could be the problem now
Got the same issue with my 2006 Acura 3.2 TL. The front valve cover will be easy to access. The rear valve cover...... That's gonna be a bit more challenging.
08 Altima valve cover seal was brittle had oil in spark plug well.. replaced valve cover and spark plugs cleaned up as much oil inside the well still have check engine light and engine still shaky? Rpm goes up and down still.. Does the oil need to burn out? Do I drive to burn it out need answer please. Thanks

Interesting idea about freezing the seals to shrink them. My concern would be that it would compromise the rubber which cracks at low temp.
Thanks for the tip
@@jennijun yea i wouldnt do that i would just be more gentle about putting them in
wont that get water onto the seal resulting in seal breaking after sometime?

A metal pick works much better when removing the gaskets. Flatheads will damage the gasket surface.

Always use a compression gauge before saying it's a head gasket unless your oil and water get mixed

When cleaning out the spark plug hole with compressed air, use a good quality cloth rag. Paper type Rags can come apart and fall into the combustion chamber which is not good.
Would have been better if he used an oil seal puller than a screwdriver.
Or at least have been a bit more caring with it. That was a serious bonk on there. I'd be afraid of ruining anywhere around the gasket. I get they're trying to show what an at home mechanic might be able to do with some common tools, but that scared me when I saw it.
or even a small thin hose pick
So do you need to blow every hole or just one end? I’m having the same issue in my Ford Focus. Looking to fix it myself but never done it before.
That was actually pretty entertaining 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
*If anyone has any insight please let me know*

How would i go about cleaning the oil in the spark plug housings without removing them (so the oil doesn’t get into the cylinders) and if I have no air compressor? The housing in my car specifically is very deep
Does anyone have a idea how much this will cost? I'm clueless but learning fast so far I have fixed everything right.
Thanks for this video and all the help. God Speed
hello, can you show how to do this on honda Fit? The spark plug seal can not be found after removing the valve cover. thanks, you guys are great.
+amankwah prince We're always cycling through common cars. We'll add this repair to our list! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
So should u replace the oily coil and the spark plug that was covered in oil?
2014 ford fusion. Should I trust the gap set on the pre-set spark plug?
"Be careful not to damage the valve cover"

*BAM BAM BAM*
You guys are the best!
wow...i will check my cars value cover etc tomorrow for leaks... great video...
Dumb question but if you were to replace the rear valve cover gasket, I take that the engine would need to be pulled?
Thanks I love the way you work very professional
Does the oil in the hole cause it to burn up as well I was running a bit low?
I recently hope someone replaced the water pump on their vehicle and the process is doing that when removing the valve cover I found a lot of oil in the 4th cylinder I got all the oil out changed the plug but now the car won't completely turn over this video was helpful but what could be the problem now
Can the ignition coil packs be saved using carb cleaner or just replace.
Thanks
