Can’t believe this story! This is exactly what happened to me! It must of been around that sort of time around 95-96 and was in Epcot and went to that arcade area (never knew it was a sega expo) and ended up playing worldwide soccer 97 and fell in love - came back home from my holiday and saved up my pocket money for months and months and went out and bought it It was my first ever console I bought myself and holds a very special place in my heart
I was there in May of the same year, but I didn’t see any of that! Maybe I was early, but if I just straight up missed it then damn… Yeah Disney was ok
It was a blessing from the gaming gods that I discovered the import stores near me and in NYC. I still remember one place had the Japanese Fighters Megamix playing and I just yelled 'WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???'. Soon a copy of FM and a combo 4MB expansion /memory/play Japanese games cart were in a bag and away I went.
Brother I never thought about buying a Japanese Saturn until I started watching your content. I'm considering it now but i am backed up with so many games. Your content is great and I love it and i've been watching it for the past few weeks. Respect.
I wonder how time has changed things for him. Unless he was very lucky he likely didn't get to play Panzer Dragoon Saga in total when it was released. These days it really hasn't aged very well and has a big price because of its rarity rather than its quality.
Sega Saturn, my all-time favorite console. Nothing takes me back to the 90s like the Saturn. Coming home from school to play Need for Speed, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Mr. Bones, Shining Force III or whatever else I was playing at that time and hanging out with my friends all summer....man those were the days. Not to mention growing up on WCW and ECW. What a time.
I used to believe that the Dreamcast was my favorite console, that I bought and sold 5 times, as I couldn’t resist it. Then one day, I picked up a Saturn. It has been and will always be my favorite console ever. It is like no other gaming console ever made. Despite the amount of money the collection costs, it means nothing when it comes to who you are and what you believe.
@@temjin44 I’ve recently concluded that when the Saturn is connected to a CRT TV with composite cables, the transparency problem becomes obsolete. I couldn’t believe it.
@@shaggymcdaniel3216 I bought it at $499 as a college student I remember. Never hesitated as a huge Sega fan since SMS. So many great games. The memories with friends and roommates coming over come back with SLX narration.
I’m still amazed how the 2D capcom, SNL and atlas fighters look and play and you can’t find these comparable on any other retro system. Since Disney now owns the rights to Marvel you can’t own any of these Capcom franchise fighter games which now makes the Saturn the ONLY platform to play them. Yeah marvel vs Capcom did come out on Dreamcast and PS1 & PS2, but thee best games that started it all such as X-men COTA, Marvel super heroes, x-men vs street fighter and marvel vs street fighter can Only be played Arcade perfect on the Saturn. These are the most treasured games that only the Saturn can give graphically as well as gameplay plus the 6 button controller.
The Saturn was my first, and has remained my favourite, console. The games have more soul and replay-ability than anything that has been released in years and I’m still finding previously undiscovered titles to this day.
It was way more successful in Japan, so there are surely quite a few fun, niche titles from there too. I never owned it, chose PS1 at that time and I honestly don't regret it at all, seeing how easy it was to buy software for it by comparison, but this list looks pretty interesting. Master System and Mega Drive remain my favourite Sega consoles by far, but I can still see the appeal of Saturn or Dreamcast these days.
@@mariusamber3237 I’d highly recommend buying one. You can get some really good deals on eBay if you’re patient, and, since you already appreciate games from that generation, I’m pretty sure you won’t regret it 👍
I’ve only ever played the demo for Panzer Dragoon, never the full game, but I played it over a dozen times as a kid. I need to play the full game. Love that soundtrack.
My folks got me one for Xmas 95 I was stoked but the town I stayed only sold ps1 and n64 games in the comming years I watched my pals play resident evil and tomb raider knowing they were on Saturn but I couldn’t find them anywhere I had to go to glasgow to find worms and worldwide soccer it was a poor selection, seeing these games breaks my heart knowing I could’ve been playing them at high school
When I bought my Saturn I had Sega raly championship and virua fighter bundles with it and bough command & conquer with it. My God those were the days.
People always look at me funny when I say my sega saturn is my fav system of all time, but it had killer games. I remeber in high school brining this to buddies houses and people were like " The Saturn is this good?". Yes it was that good. I had 6 of the top 10 and the shinning games were the best!
I get those looks too, people straight up think I'm lying when I tell them the Saturn had almost 3 TIMES the amount of games that the N64 did. We can't really blame the people though, they're just ignorant and don't know any better. Its our job as fans of the system to help it be remembered as it should be, and clear up the gross misinformation and general ignorance of the system in the West I think!
Guardian heroes was very special to me, an unknown game I got from an uncle on my birthday that quickly became one of my most played ones. No guides, I got all the endings and paths and got good with every character. Looks like your story with first place on your list (sadly, I never played this one).
My personal favorite game out of my Saturn library, too! Wish there were more games like it around. At the very least, I'd like to see the Xbox 360 version get released for PC.
Unbelievable game. My dad brought it home from a car boot sale and I instantly fell in love with it. Quite valuable now and bugs me out that I know I still have it somewhere (just had the cd, not the box l but I don't know exactly where.

I was a Sega kid growing up...everyone in my neighborhood had SNES, but I had Genesis...and when everyone got a Playstation I was the only one rockin' the Saturn on my block! And I'm damn proud of it
Believe it or not the game I spent the most hours on was Pebble beach golf links. I still play it to this day. The second most played game was World rally championship.
Aren't you thinking about the game Disruptor, made by Insomniac before Spyro? I'm not aware of any connection between Insomniac (who made Disruptor & Spyro/Ratchet), and Lobotomy Software (who made Powerslave & the Saturn ports of Quake & Duke Nukem 3D).
As a kid I had genesis & snes. In my teen years I stopped for a while, than in 98 I got a ps1. I always sorta knew the Saturn exsisted but never owned one til recently. Kinda wish I had, Sega is awesome!
Did y’all know the Saturn could play Hollywood movies long b4 ps2?! Not dvd but V-CD. I’m about to start a collection of those! If that’s not enough, it’s a CD player & almost every game has cd playback! It’s like a free game soundtrack! Oh those were the days....
There's literally nothing better than a list of games YOU think are great, not ones that you're meant to like or appreciate because of their legacy or popularity. Great picks, my man.
Love the Sega Saturn, still have it to this day and i got it before the Playstation. Die hard Arcade, Bubble bobble festuring rainbow islands.Sega Rally, Christmas nights,Darios gaiden and many more. Great times, great memorys.
I am a huge rpg fan, so shining force 3 and all scenarios are in the top with panzer dragoon saga. I also love dragon force 2. the Saturn is a fantastic machine
@@SprunkCovers Yeah, they're made by the same studio: Camelot. Nowadays they only make Mario sports games for Nintendo though, Like the new Mario Golf.
Shinning force 3 (all 3 scenarios, especially 3!) is in my top 3 best games of all time and the years have only made it better. I still play through them every 2 years
I had a Saturn back in the day. I didn't realize it could handle 100 sprites on screen at once. That console had so much potential. BTW, I'm glad to hear you were able to turn your life around for the better.
Thanks to you and this channel, I have a deeper appreciation and knowledge of Sega. I appreciate the master system we owned more now, than I ever did as a young buck. You are a 💎in this industry. Thanks a million SLX!
Great video, love the Saturn. Such an underrated console and it’s a shame people missed out on these classics. I discovered that guardian heros & radiant silvergun were playable on the xbox 360 arcade and at a good Price . Now thats Priceless.
Awesome list! There really are no wrong choices when it comes to the Saturn, there are so many amazing game sit makes your head spin! I thought about it long and hard bit still couldn't bring myself to cut my personal favorite list down to the top 20: Radiant Silvergun Dracula X Battle Garegga Mega Man X4 Panzer Dragoon Zwei Astal DodonPachi XMen Vs. Street Fighter Mega Man 8 Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus Batsugun Metal Slug Guardian Heroes Layer Section Shining Force 3 Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon Grandia Dungeons & Dragons Collection Panzer Dragoon Saga House Of The Dead ...what an amazing machine!
Sega Rally and Powerslave are the reasons I own a Saturn. Surely Powerslave was ahead of its time, I'd have loved to try it when it was first released, but I actually did it last year and for me is still enjoyable. Thanks for this video, love your content!
You're probably thinking this is just another top 10, but you can tell that the SLX came from the heart with this one! A console's worth will always be as valuable as the memories it's linked to.
Great video, and I love to see reminiscences about personal top 10's like this. When I saw there were 100's of comments, I thought there would be a bunch of commenters' top 10's, but only a few so far. Here's mine: Nights into Dreams, Tomb Raider, Panzer Dragoon, Hyper Duel, Dragon Force, Galactic Attack/Layer Section, X-Men VS Street Fighter, Powerslave/Exhumed, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers. Hard to decide on a Top 10 or even a Top 20 for Saturn... so many games I have great memories of, so many games I still enjoy today. I love all the games in SLX's list and many of those listed by commenters below. Saturn forever!!!
The first Saturn Daytona also holds mad nostalgic value for me, given how I played the shir out of it. And seeing the original Panzer on a Blockbuster kiosk is what made me get a Saturn in the first place.
I bought this system when it first launched for $399.00 at Electronics Boutique Marion, Illinois. This and Command & Conquer and Dragon Force were so good. I played both games to death. I remember a friend coming over to my house after work, seeing me play both games and immediately leaving my house to go to his home, box up his N64 and Pilot Wings and heading to his local Babbage’s to get a refund and buy himself a Saturn and Dragon Force and C&C. That was how powerful the SEGA effect could be on certain people.
You have some really solid titles in this list. Guardian Heroes is probably one of my all time favorite beat em up / hack n slash games. I loved all of the Vs games that Capcom put out and the Alpha games were fantastic too. I've never been big into strategy or RPG games but I respect your opinion and how you rated these games.
@@aaronhiggs too simplistic? that's disappointing. i still want to give it a go just because i love the shining force series and wanted to see another shining in the darkness on the genesis. i like trad jrpgs but i wish there were more dungeon crawlers with good story.
My favorite Saturn title is Dark Savior. Literally changed how I viewed life. How just a few seconds can change your entire life. If you haven't dove deep into it, I definitely suggest it.
Interesting list and very different from every other top 10. Saturn was my first console. Aged 9 having been given a coleco vision about age 5 that I was allowed to hook up a few times here and there. I not sure if I ever even ended up with 10 games ever but I really enjoyed my time with it and still do.
I had a Saturn before I went to PlayStation, I never got rid of my Saturn though. One of the things that pushed me to the change was the lack of support hardware like the RF Switch or extra controllers. I lived in an urban area too so you'd think those things would have been widely available. Also most of my local game spots were very much Sony/Nintendo fanboys.
As someone who was primarily an N64 owner during this time period I had always wished towards the end of the Saturn's life that the two systems libraries were one. More here in the UK where the officially released games total was about the same and would have at least been a library that could be as good as what the Playstation had. I honestly have never owned a Saturn though because at the time where I lived no where stocked it and by the time the N64 was released it was gone from the shelves of all but one or two places even close to where I lived as a child. I was going to start collecting for one recently until the prices started to go up again so I am holding off for a bit longer.
@@user-yk1cw8im4h well I mean hold off until I have the money saved more than anything because of other stuff I need to sort out first not because I expect the prices to drop suddenly.
Some games on the Sega Saturn are so good, that i bought it on the XBOX 360 too. This would be a great episode, if you list Sega games or games you like so much, that you own them at least twice.
I missed out on Saturn during it’s life span. I only started playing some emulation recently. I got to admit that Power Slave and Duke Nukem would’ve been incredible in 1996/7. Much better than the FPS the PlayStation was offering during those 2 years.
This channel along with the shmup community did a lot in convincing me to get a JP Saturn last year. I'd never thought as highly of it as other systems, but I fell in love with it and now own around 100 physical games, with a wish list of 200 more. Now I can't see ever parting with it. Sega Rally is still one of the best playing games ever created. It has so many wonderfully and uniquely Japanese oddities, of a type that would disappear in the years following. And the 2D arcade library of ports rather than sloppy emulations is an absolutely precious thing in this day & age. Some of those games may never surface again, with the devs & publishers long gone. And all of it tied to what's still the best digital controller ever designed.
I'm so glad you have Mystaria on this list! You're right, the game deserves way more love. And recently someone found out that the sequel got a US product code, which probably means it was totally localized and ready for release, but was never even announced... I hope it leaks online one day. That, or the Japanese version gets a fan translation...
Shining Force III and Panzer Dragoon Saga are my top two for the system and my two favorite games of all time. I've spent so much time on these two games since I first started playing Satun games in 2016 (over 700 hours on Shining Force III and 13 playthroughs of PDS).
Thank you for this list. When I was a kid I used to drool over the Saturn at the stores. Never got one but I settled for a PC and PSX at the time. So much great games back then unlike today's generic Triple A's and P2P pay per play or to win.
Ogre Battle has the same issue Dragon Force has. You can just fly to the map boss with a griffon and have 1 overpowered troop with a bunch of OP tarot cards or actually make an army of varied classes which is what i always did.
Going from Genesis to Saturn was an awestruck moment. Colors, graphics, sound & the content was amazing. I have 8 of ur top 10. Check out Tomb Raider on Saturn, you can see details much farther away than the PS1 version. Sega had a winner of a system but SOA threw in the towel too quickly IMO.
I also prefer Saturn Tomb Raider to PSX Tomb Raider, even though the textures are more jaggedy. I still play the game every year or two, and the Saturn version feels more visceral to me, involves me more.
It's unreal how much darker the Saturn version is though. I love Tomb Raider but going back playing the first couple on of hardware is tough. The controls and graphics are... interesting. I played then first on PC with my Voodoo 2 looked way better. Love that Tomb Raider was made for the Saturn though. Not the PS.
Thanks for the videos. I stopped gaming for awhile because of the frustrations I experienced with the 32X. Fun to see the passion for the systems and games I skipped over. Hope your life is blessed.
Shining Force 3, Sega Rally, Striker, Guardian Heroes, SFA3, Grandia, Night, Darkstalkers: Vampire Savior, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Terre Phantastica and Saturn Bomberman... So many good memories
Honestly, the Saturn is criminally underrated by the gaming community (especially in the US). Whenever I bring up the Sega Saturn as a great system, most people roll their eyes. I think you have to have owned one to know that it has a lot of unique and amazing games. I would love to see remasters of some of these exclusive Saturn games that have been lost to time. Unfortunately, a lot of Saturn games go for quite a pretty penny in this day and age, so I think bringing some of the Saturn's library to modern consoles with an affordable price tag would be a great way to bring some of these treasures back. The Panzer Dragoon remaster last year was a great start and I hope they eventually release the other two games in the series as well. Who knows? Maybe we'll see a Nights remaster or other Saturn classic reappear.
I got the Saturn in late summer of 1995, and I agree it was a great system. Those people rolling their eyes couldn't play the likes of X-Men vs. Street Fighter properly on any other system at the time. The Playstation couldn't handle it due to no RAM expansion. And the N64 just didn't have anything like it, or much 2D of any kind, for some reason. And there were plenty of other great games. I loved my Saturn. Only reason I got a Playstation(I had to play Tenchu) used in 1998 was because Saturn releases had already stopped and the Dreamcast was stopping Saturn game development in Japan.
@@ravagingwolverine Yeah, definitely! That extra RAM pack on the Saturn made some games near-arcade perfect. The Saturn was an absolute 2D powerhouse! I always wondered if the Saturn had come to market years earlier and completely had replaced the Sega CD and 32X if it would have been more successful in the US. Though, I heard one of the things that held the Saturn back was that it was difficult to code and program games compared to the Playstation. Though, that never stopped in-house developers at Sega as they seemed to tap every ounce of potential from the system. Honestly, if Sega ever released a Sega Saturn Mini, I would absolutely snap it up! Maybe include Guardian Heroes, the Panzer Dragoon series, Nights, Fighters Megamix, some Capcom fighting games (X-Men and Marvel), Street Fighter Alpha series, Astal, Fighting Vipers, Shining Force 3, Burning Rangers Clockwork Knight 1 & 2, Daytona USA: CE, Saturn Bomberman, Legend of Oasis, Baku Baku, Thunder Force V, Dragon Force, Magic Knight Rayearth, Earthworm Jim 2, Mega Man X4, Mega Man 8, Radiant Silvergun, heck, even throw Bug 1 & 2 on there! 😅
@@mattb6522 Yeah, it's been well established that the Saturn was tricky to program. The architecture was certainly more complicated than the competition. It was also complicated from a cost standpoint. That many processors was costly, and Sony took advantage of it by forcing Sega into price drops. From things I read, it wasn't just that it was tricky to fully utlilize the system's power, but also Sega was late to provide third parties with development tools to help them. I can believe that. I remember how many multi-platform games were five or six months behind their Playstation counterparts. A Saturn mini would be cool, and it's fun to speculate on what would be included. I doubt it would be viable, though, due to the lack of nostalgia for it. To be fair, TG16 didn't do well outside of Japan either, and both the TG16 and Saturn have become appreciated in recent years, so maybe it could work. A Saturn mini could at least work for Japan. I don't think Saturn emulation is in the right state for such a product at the moment, both in terms of hardware and software. However, I would be fine with Saturn compilations for modern hardware as well. PS5 and XsX(Microsoft is the worst with names) should have plenty of power for Saturn emulation with no compromises. I don't know the licensing situation with the current group of Saturn emulators. Your list of games is good. I'd personally add, off the top of my head, Fighters Megamix and Virtual On(I love that one). I'm sure there are lots more good candidates for such compilations.
@@ravagingwolverine That's a shame that Sega didn't get development tools out to third parties quick enough. Sega had a lot of management conflict and they constantly made questionable business decisions during the 90's. It is a shame that past Sega couldn't pull their team together and had to completely drop out of the hardware market. Yeah, I agree. As much as I would love a Saturn Mini, it will never happen. The Saturn just wasn't popular in the US. It had such a small user base here, unfortunately. Though. I would be on board with your idea of a Saturn compilation package for modern systems (maybe even throw some other Sega games from the Dreamcast and GameCube era, too?). I could see it as maybe a Sega Collection to celebrate their legacy. I mean, we see Genesis Collections all the time, but many Saturn games have long since been forgotten.
Dragon Force looks amazing, as someone who's a huge fan of the Ogre Battle series it looks like it could be right up my alley. Will have to check it out someday. Thanks SLX
Long time subscriber. Man, you've pull out this video at the EXACT time in my life where i'm researching on the Saturn. I've searched this video just a few days ago and it was'nt here lol Thx a lot!
Thank you SLX to see Shining Force 3 in your top ten! I am grateful to play this on the Sega Saturn and to this day is one of the best strategy JRPGs. I love that you highlighted the music too by Motoi Sakuraba :)
Finally Shining in the Darkness, Mystaria, Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force takes the spotlight, me and my brother were all into these back in the day. The Saturn is my favorite console and a major part of it were the RPGs, later Grandia was released, even being in Japanese it left a lifelong impression in me. It was the first console that made me not needing an arcade to play KOF 95,96,97, SFA, SFA2, SFA3, X-Men vs SF, Marvel vs SF, not to mention amazing exclusives, Bulk Slash, Burning Rangers, Virtua Cop, Die Hard Arcade and so many more, I could keep talking about how much fun I had with this console for a long time.
Great stuff! I agree that the true sign of greatness for a game is how much you really find yourself going back to play it over and over. I definitely share some overlap on my personal choices with a few differences. My top 10 today would probably look slmething like: Dragon Force Virtua Cop 2 Galactic Attack Enemy Zero Lunacy Street Fighter Alpha 2 Sega Rally Championship Soukyugurentai Panzer Dragoon II Mansion of the Hidden Souls I have a weird love of the first person FMV games on Saturn like those listed and D. I play the light gun games as much as anything, especially with my oldest son. The Virtua Cop games are unbeatable in my book. I also love the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night, but I more associate the game with the Playstation.
This was an interesting list to watch, as Sega Rally was the only game on this list I actually played. My favourite games with include Panzer Dragoon Saga, Virtual On, Virtual Fighter and it was the console that kicked off my love for Command and Conquer. The Saturn really did have a lot of gems. I should retrieve mine from the cupboard and see how it works. My Dreamcast stopped working but I'd be curious to see if the Saturn survived.
Saturn is one of the only major consoles I never owned. Still, I enjoyed this video. That FPS with the great lighting looked crazy fun! I played the GBA Guardian Heroes game, and it’s amazing this style never caught on.
Whenever I see exhumed/powerslave I regret it being one of the few games I traded in back in the 90s. However still proud to have 40+ titles still for my MK1 Saturn !
I agree with many of the titles on this list, especially Sega Rally, Dragon Force, Exhumed and NOT including PD Saga. But I would have added Radiant Silver or Shienryu - these two games are amazing. 🔥🔥🔥
Man, Shining Force III is a masterpiece and I've been sitting on the fan translations for the other two episodes for years. Just finally got the newest patches for them and may finally go through them!
Great system. I remember getting it and playing virtua fighter, and being amazed. Then got Panzer Dragoon, and was dumbfounded. The gameplay, but the music, the music was legendary. Coming from the Sega Genesis and SNES, it was so shocking to hear that music. Getting Virtua Fighter 2, what an amazing upgrade from the 1st game. Had a lot of fun with the Saturn, it was an underrated system. Sega Genesis was my #1 Sega console ever, Dreamcast was my #2, but the Saturn was amazing as well. It truly was an amazing experience going to the next generation from the Genesis. Graphically, it seems to be the biggest jump ever between generations.
I was surprised to see Mystaria on the list due to it seeming relatively obscure (to be honest, it's one of the reasons I regret not getting a Saturn, along with Guardian Heroes, Bug!, Story of Thor 2 and Shining the Holy Ark).
I have never played a Saturn game. There are so many of them i would like to play though. I hope someday there is an easy way to play them for me like a Saturn mini. Lol
The emulator SSF is easy to use and works fine. Not perfect but not bad. There's probably something better by now...Also hey my setup is a real Saturn and I play burned CD-R games with Psuedo Saturn Kai Action Replay. And get a Retrotink for an HDMI converter. :)
I'm currently marathoning the first 3 Sonic games and my favorite fangame (Sonic Robo Blast 2) because of the hedgehog's anniversary today, when I noticed this in my notifications. This will be a good Sega themed break from from from an already Sega filled gaming session. I've never played many Saturn games before, but I know you've recommended many great ones, and to be honest this video is now making me consider delving into library more, lots of good arcade ports and hidden gems to find.
My top 5 Saturn games... 1. Shining Force 3 scenario trilogy. I have the authentic American release, but I bought the scenario trilogy on an English translated repro. Amazing game, took me 175 hours to finish all three scenarios. 2. Grandia, if we are including Japanese releases. I played this on PS1. 3. Dragon force. The best American release on it’s own. 4. Panzer Dragoon Saga 5. Radiant Silvergun
Haven't seen SLX mention Shining Force III often. I shouldn't be surprised it's so high, but just he hasn't mentioned it often. I really think Shining Force III is the hidden gem in all of gaming now that the English translations of all three scenarios are available. Sure it's linear, but man it is so fun if you can get by the few areas that are too much dialog. For people freaking out about rare games it's nearly as scarce in English as PDS anyway.
Some of my favorite Saturn games are Virtua Fighter 2 Panzer Dragoon & Nights into Dreams. Being able to play those games on Xbox One from backward compatibility ( with original Panzer Dragoon unlockable on Xbox original Panzer Dragoon Orta ) is really awesome. Shout out to you Sega Lord X.
Couldn't agree with you more on Dragon Force. If there was ever a candidate for a reboot this is it. It still holds up to this day and the one game I still play. I bought mine in a clearance bin at a store called Media Play for $19.99 without knowing much about it. Best 20 bucks I ever spent.
one strategy ive found useful in Dragon Force was having mages and archers spamming their projectiles, while your game was semi-paused. either by doing a very long special where the NPCs cant attack but mages/archers can, or through timed pauses
Good to see your top 10. Dragon Force is a great game and one of the best pickups ever for me as I didn't really know what to expect. Dragon Force is part of one of my greatest gaming memories that I've detailed before. Short version is I picked up both Dragon Force and import version of Fighters Megamix in the spring of 1997 right at the beginning of a school break. I had a blast with those two amazing games. I was in a bit of a gaming depression in late 2000 with the decline of both Sega and SNK, so I was out of gaming for a bit, but I was still going back to the Saturn and Dragon Force and making great memories despite not getting new games. Luckily, the GBA would revive my interest for some time. I played a lot of great games on the Saturn and tried a lot of new things as well, so it really was fun to own the system in its time. I'm not going to do a top 10, but my top games would have to have spots for Fire Pro Wrestling S: 6 Men Scramble, which I played constantly for a while, and King of Fighters '97, which I fell in love with seeing it in the arcade, despite being right next to Street Fighter 3. Those two games were always very important to me.
From some of the comments you've made about your past, it sounds like we have some similarities there. I'd love to hear you share more about that. Thanks for all the wonderful content!

Same! They had Virtual On and I always remembered the game but couldn't figure out what it was until years later.

This system was soooooo much better than everyone thought back in the day, glad Japan kept it alive so nowadays we can appreciate it more
Well, the system was horribly mismanaged in the west.
It was a blessing from the gaming gods that I discovered the import stores near me and in NYC. Geekdom! When do you think we're getting Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken X 50 Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku vs. Ultimate Full Power Granolah?
just get a cartrige and import games
"if you're here just to see where Panzer Dragoon Saga placed, I'll save you the 20 minutes and tell you it's not here" 🤣
How can you not love SLX?
His list is great and an excellent pick for number 1.
I feel like even on such an underrated system, that is a terribly overrated game.
I wonder how time has changed things for him. Unless he was very lucky he likely didn't get to play Panzer Dragoon Saga in total when it was released. These days it really hasn't aged very well and has a big price because of its rarity rather than its quality.
Saga is a great game but overrated somewhat, if it wasn't so rare I don't think it would be talked about as much
For me it beats the hell out of Mystaria. Mystaria looks like a “create your own RPG maker” RPG.
Saturn is my favorite console as well. First entry of 3D gaming at home.
The sense of wonder I get from this console has stuck with me since I was a kid. Thank you for giving the Saturn the love and exposure it deserves.
The Saturn is a underappreciated console. A real 2D power house.
I believe sega rally still has an active time Atack community to this day
Guardian heroes was very special to me, an unknown game I got from an uncle on my birthday that quickly became one of my most played ones.

Dragon Force is amazing! So glad I got to play it way back when!
Powerslave was actually developed by the team at Insomniac who later went on to make the Spyro trilogy and Ratchet & Clank series (amongst others).
I didn't know Lobotomy Software had anything to do with Insomniac?
Aren't you thinking about the game Disruptor, made by Insomniac before Spyro? I'm not aware of any connection between Insomniac (who made Disruptor & Spyro/Ratchet), and Lobotomy Software (who made Powerslave & the Saturn ports of Quake & Duke Nukem 3D).
The Sega Saturn is a masterpiece. One of the top 10 consoles of all time, where the Sega consoles dominate.
GREAT timing, my Saturn comes in Friday
You have made a great choice, my friend!
You choose wisely!
Good list! I’ve been following your videos a lot, especially Dreamcast & now Saturn. My collection continues to grow, about 60 now.
He nailed alot of my favorites. Never did see what people saw in Sega Rally though.
I got your back on Shining The Holy Ark. Really solid, overlooked RPG. Just wish I’d finished it before moving on from the Saturn.
Probably my favorite rpg on Saturn. I bought it from babbages and still have it.
I always get a kick out of how Shining the Holy Ark is literally Golden Sun. I hope they let them make a new game in that style some day.
The first time I saw Shining I thought that, there is a reason behind the massive similarities?
@@SprunkCovers Yeah, they're made by the same studio: Camelot. Nowadays they only make Mario sports games for Nintendo though, Like the new Mario Golf.
Oh you are right, never noticed it was madd by Camelot lol
Shinning force 3 (all 3 scenarios, especially 3!) is in my top 3 best games of all time and the years have only made it better. I still play through them every 2 years
100% Dragon Force for #1 all day. Such an amazing game. First game I ever cracked out on and stayed up all night playing. Oh the good ol days.
MSH vs sf was great on saturn. Cant be overstated how amazing it was to have a almost arcade perfect game in your home on console
Not almost. It IS arcade perfect! That Ram cart was magical
I had a Saturn back in the day. I didn't realize it could handle 100 sprites on screen at once. That console had so much potential. BTW, I'm glad to hear you were able to turn your life around for the better.
Such a gem of a system.
I'm surprised Virtua Fighter 1 & 2 are not here. Still, I respect your opinion.
Now thats
Priceless.
Awesome list! There really are no wrong choices when it comes to the Saturn, there are so many amazing game sit makes your head spin!
I thought about it long and hard bit still couldn't bring myself to cut my personal favorite list down to the top 20:
Radiant Silvergun
Dracula X
Battle Garegga
Mega Man X4
Panzer Dragoon Zwei
Astal
DodonPachi
XMen Vs. Street Fighter
Mega Man 8
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
Batsugun
Metal Slug
Guardian Heroes
Layer Section
Shining Force 3
Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon
Grandia
Dungeons & Dragons Collection
Panzer Dragoon Saga
House Of The Dead
...what an amazing machine!
Nice selection of games you've chosen for the beloved Sega Saturn.
So true.
Shining Force 3 is the last great Shining Force game before PS2 killed the franchise.
How did ps2 killed it? Final fantasy?
Can't believe no one ever mentions Torico / Lunacy. That game was so freaking good, and my favorite Saturn game😌
Great game indeed, but not my favourite.
A million times better than mansion of hidden souls.
@@steve5123456789 I never tried that one.
Just finished a Hisaturn Region free + Fram mod and searched up Best Saturn games. This is vid is literally brand new haha. Good shit!
Fun Fact: Mystaria is the spiritual successor to Guardian War on 3DO. Also a great game.
Great list, but you missed a true jewel: Nights into dreams! 🌟
It's a list of his personal favourite games, not the system's greatest games. Besides, I'd argue that Nights is absurdly overrated.
@@DryPsylocibin You know you’re deep in the Sega rabbit hole when you start hearing Nights into Dreams is overrated.
i've always wanted to play shining the holy ark, it looks right up my alley.
Literally?
@@Windavinci oh sure. ever since i was a little baby. before it was released, even.
It’s basically a golden sun game.
Hold off? Sorry to burst your lil bubble, but prices are only gonna increase.
Nights and Gaudian Heroes anyone? :)
@@captchaossega Nights is awsome.
Dragon Force was one of the games to which I dedicated many hours. I'm so glad to see someone give this game its due.
Ah the memories... Much love for your list!
Yes! Shining the Holy Ark getting the love it deserves!
Oh sweet nostalgia. I wish i kept my Saturn instead of selling it to funcoland.
A great key point there SLX, they're games and games need to play well above everything else.
Always love your genuine love of Sega and personal insight, another great video dude!
My top 10 today would probably look slmething like:
Dragon Force
Virtua Cop 2
Galactic Attack
Enemy Zero
Lunacy
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Sega Rally Championship
Soukyugurentai
Panzer Dragoon II
Mansion of the Hidden Souls
I have a weird love of the first person FMV games on Saturn like those listed and D.
MYsteria over PDS? That’s a joke.
Man, Shining Force III is a masterpiece and I've been sitting on the fan translations for the other two episodes for years. Just finally got the newest patches for them and may finally go through them!
Please do!
You’ve become one of my favorite content creators.. thanks for the entertainment and keep it up 🤘
Thanks for sharing. I appreciate your content.
I 💯 agree. It was a huge jump from the Genesis/SNES
Absolutely knew Dragonforce would be number one!! Haha
I was surprised to see Mystaria on the list due to it seeming relatively obscure (to be honest, it's one of the reasons I regret not getting a Saturn, along with Guardian Heroes, Bug!, Story of Thor 2 and Shining the Holy Ark).
As much as I loved my NES, SNES, N64 & PS1, I was so hype seeing the Saturn in GamePro mags. I have so much nostalgia for it
I have never played a Saturn game. There are so many of them i would like to play though.
I hope someday there is an easy way to play them for me like a Saturn mini. Lol
Wouldn't that be crazy if a Saturn mini sold better than the real Saturn did in the US?
4. Panzer Dragoon Saga
FANTASTIC VIDEO, it's true you can make at least 5-6 more top tens on the sega saturn !!!!!
I am so glad to see the mighty Sega Lord X giving the Saturn so much love. It is my all time favorite console.
2 weeks ago I pulled the trigger and picked up a copy of Guardian Heroes. Absolutely love it.
Shining force 3 should have been number 1, it's by far the top Sega Saturn game.
Those two games were always very important to me.
dude, thank you for this. saturn is still my favourite console of all time
From some of the comments you've made about your past, it sounds like we have some similarities there. I'd love to hear you share more about that. Thanks for all the wonderful content!
I loved Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, and Sega Rally as well. Nice choice of the Nights outro for the wrapup. Appreciate the personal take.
