  • The Bell V-280 Valor reached a flight speed of 80 knots and is flying at an altitude of 1,000 feet above ground level.
Some of the test points demonstrated:
Ground taxi, hover taxi, low altitude hovering maneuvers including 360 pedal turns and forward/aft/lateral repositions, 40 knots roll on landings, and forward flight out to 80 knots.

soooo, lol why is $$$ being pumped into this? Granted I know we have a not so modern helicopter fleet but you can't replace oranges with apples. It maybe able to hover but let's see it drop into a hot/very small LZ at 1000 fpm, dump out the troops/Marines, max perf. takeoff out of the fire in under 30 seconds like a uh-1 or 60...or maybe it won't be used for that. I dunno. I think it'd make a great alternative to all those traffic jams in LA and NYC.

For a professional cooperation and video maker, your ability to keep prototype mechanics censored on this video and the internet suck :p
Then again, I don't think anyone can keep stuff secret any more, everyone, like, everyone has a camera or two now.
That said, I'm excited to see future implementations of this and all that are to come in the future, I'm amazed by what is being made and thrilled to see what can come of them all.
    Have a pleasant day!

With the Osprey, the engines tilt and that's a problem with hoses etc that have to continually flex. Now they don't have to bend cos the engines stay still in the Valor. Better idea, and I reckon it's not just the hoses that benefit from the new tilt idea.

I'm no aviation expert but, I don't quite understand the design logic for this aircraft. From what I've read about what the military wants out of the competition with the SB-1 Defiant, (a dual utility / combat platform), Even though it only recently made its first hover test flight I think the SB-1 Defiant is more in line with what the military wants. The V-280 just looks too vulnerable to weapons fire to be a "under fire" combat platform. I think my biggest worry for our nation's brave soldiers who might be in this some day is that if one of those nacelle's gets blown off, it will be crippled, be uncontrollable with one offset remaining nacelle & will drop like a proverbial rock. With the SB-1's somewhat more familiar design with the twin stacked rotors & a pusher, I think it just looks more survivable in a worst case scenario. Don't think I hate BELL, I dont, The venerable UH-1 IROQUOIS & the AH-1 COBRA will always be some of my all-time favorites chopper designs, but other than possible use as a utility / transport vehicle, I don't see a future for it.

What I like is that irregardless of the US Armys FVL program, Bell says they will produce the Valor for other services, export and the Civilian market, and the technology is scalable. So now we know why Bell sold the BA-609 off to AgustaWestland, Bell considers it to be 1st Gen Tilt Rotor Technology.
One concept that bell will consider for future variants of the Valor Tilt Rotor (and not tilting Nacelles), is to mount the engines over the fuselage and have power shafts to the tilting rotors.

Sikorsky x2 technology is better imo. Commonality between the heavy lift and the attack helicopter just like with the huey and cobra. They are extremely fast and maneuverable and for an attack helicopter they are very small where one of these as an attack helicopter would be way too big and not maneuverable enough. I think theres room for both though, but they already have the osprey... so idk.

Tiltrotors are not a replacement for a traditional helicopter and there's no way the Air Force will allow the Army to have an armed variant of this because they will claim it's a fixed wing. The Army wants a base platform that can be developed into multiple roles and there's just no way they're going to be able to develop a gunship variant of this because tilltrotors are not as maneuverable in hover as a true helicopter (they have much higher disk loading) and the Air Force will fight like hell to stop them. I think the ideal situation is that the Army gets the SB-1 and a smaller number of V-280's but unfortunately they have to choose one or the other and I can only see them going with the platform that has the most utility and flexibility to be developed into multiple roles.

You ever watch yearly car shows where car brands try to conceal their new models from competitors by covering up some parts on the cars and then when you get to the car show ALL the cars still look the same down to taillight shapes as if 1 designer was contracted for all brands. This attempt of covering up trade secret component is silly as if Bell's competitors don't use more sophisticated means to infiltrate and study their R&D.

This airframe with the push propeller and the double coaxial rotor's of the Sikorsky would make an incredible helicopter 2 wings on the side with room for 3 pilons for weapons a better weapon benith the cabin because the one used on the apache its very inaccurate at medium and even worst at long ranges with 360 degrees view the latest radars optics etc etc And would be a great apache viper and even Blackhawk replacement .I hope they make use of the incredible technology at there disposal today and don't let the gread and corruption get in the way of giving the best tho those soldiers on the front lines
