The guy who designed this battery placement should be taken in a dark room and *B E A T E N*
Severely!
Unmercifully....smdh
It's not the worse Ive seen to be honest.
I'm not a violent man but........ I agree .... who ever the person is , should be hung by their pinky toes over a pit of crocodiles
Ive had 2 cars like this...effin Dodge engineers !!
I think they designed the whole vehicle and then got it done and then they stood there and said. "Oh shit we forgot about the battery "
davieboy1970 this is exactly what I said once I found the battery, at least they could of put it in the back or something. Yeesh.
True statement !
You damn right, now I got to pay 200 for parts and labor when it could’ve been done for free at autozone. Am pissed off.
lmaoo
@@bariatasudan you won't get that battery replaced for free. in fact autozone, and a few others won't even offer.. they will tell you no.
wow great spot for the battery....to fill the car up with gas do you have to remove the other tire?
Dont give them any more ideas
😂😂😂😂 like fr
For all of you complaining about the placement it was a way for dodge to get you to go to the shop to get the battery changed. It’s just a way for them to get more money from you.
A scummy reason to do it.
If I had known this I would have NEVER bought a Dodge Journey. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I would never buy another dodge.
This type of engineering is common across all manufacturers. It is a little short sighted to dismiss an entire product line for something they all do, it just varies from model to model what you may find.
Besides, how often are you replacing the battery? Once every 5 years?
@@tomc8157 Yeah but if something drains it, like you have a short and it just kills your battery or if you need a jump start for whatever reason, you are absolutely fooked.
@@slugzkea There are remote terminals for jump starting right above the battery area. I just did my wife's journey and it took 20 min to swap it out. Wasn't that bad.
@@tomc8157 Yes i see this now in another vid. I have to remove aftermarket stereo wiring on a journey i'm trying to sell...any way to access the battery without taking the wheel off? what if i took the whole front bumper off?
I had to do this in the parking lot at AutoZone this past Saturday, did the Dodge engineers just want to screw with people? There's plenty of room under the hood to place the battery this is cruel and unusual punishment
Just had the battery replaced for the third time. The last two time which was today. There was no need to remove tire. Just turn the tire to the far left. Put back or remove flap that's behind battery. Two different guys were able to replace with no problem.
The manual said no need to remove tire. Looking at it, I don't see it happening without removing the tire. Red five, I'm going in
Well, I took your advice.....I owe you a 🍹. Thanks for your comment
Now I’m literally stuck at my house with a uncharged battery. I can’t even take the battery to autozone because they put they battery in the deepest darkest part of the car.
It is in an unusual spot, but its really not that bad.
Really? Not like you were going to drive it their either way if you have a dead battery. Get your hands a little dirty, take you not even 10 minutes to jack up the car, remove the tire and pop the clips
@@victorluzia7146 that's what I'm saying.
Everyone has a memory saver kicking around....LOL. Forget it. You don't need it. If you have a spare 12V battery kicking around the garage with a little bit of life left in it (it does not take much current) use screw clamps to connect wires to the positive lead under the hood near the fuse box and the ground can go to the frame. Then when you remove your old battery, the spare one will keep current going enough to save all your memory and settings. Lawn tractors, rechargeable jump start power packs, kids electric riding toys, some rechargeable flood lights, etc. have 12 volt batteries. Any 12 volt source will do. Just make sure you wire it up solid under the hood before removing the battery in the fender well.
Its a Journey.... To the effing battery!!
Rich:
Thank for straight forward how to procedure without all the negative about a particular model. Very refreshing. Vehicles are what they are. Someone spent their money for it and many loves them. If they were all bad they would go out of business in America with all the choices. Thanks again.
Macdoctor I'll NEVER buy another one lol...
" so many love them " because they are unaware of the design flaws of this vehicle. I SPECIFICALLY asked about several things when I bought mine , assuming ( my fault) he was : A. Understanding my question , and B. Giving me truthful answers. I was wrong on one point or the other. The vehicle was not designed for the average person to maintain AT ALL. Most mechanics I've spoken with , admit " cringing" at the prospect of a battery change for this car. The other Dodges in my life have not been this way. If this is a " proud design " for Chrysler, I will not be " contributing" to their cause again.
WTF were do I get a memory saver from? Can I do without it and will my car get Alzheimer's?
Did you do it without I'm trying to change mine and it's kind of a headache and now this lol
I know it's an old comment but be cool if you let me know
yep, read almost every post. some recommend check pcm, electrical or granny itself. checking electrical now, will keep you informed. thanks for responding.
My battery just died and I could not fucking find the battery so I youtube it and now, all I can say is, what were they fucking thinking placing the battery there.
Chummy Chime c
Chummy Chime . Darling, me too!!! I cant believe it!!! 😡😡🔪🔪🔥👎
Eunice Ramirez
I just traded it a week ago for a Honda. Much much better quality.
they want you to take it to the dealer ship, so they can make more money.
That's a good reminder not to ever buy a Dodge. That is terrible engineering! What knuckle head decided it is a good idea to put the battery in the wheel well...Jesus!
Nick Nicu you ain’t lying! I’ve had nothing but issues with my journey. Such a POS!
Nick Nicu we the worst place especially if you live in the North where the roads are constantly salted with brine
Gotta put it some where. No worse than my chevy with battery buried in the trunk. Luckily you only need to access it to replace it. Not that big of a job to do every 4 to 6 years.
Red Fish Incorporated i had a Camaro with the battery in the truck and it wasn't a big deal but my journey is a different story. Who in the hell thought it'd be a good idea to have to take of a tire and your wheel well to get to the battery? Thts beyond ridiculous.....
@@Forever.Remain.Nameless it honestly isn't a big deal, it's definitely not convenient but it's not a big deal. Anyone who is even slightly competent with tools should be able to knock it out pretty quickly. I can see where it might be a big deal if you had to change it in a parking lot somewhere, in the middle of the night, in the dead of winter but in the comfort and leisure of your own driveway it's a piece of cake. It honestly took me longer to empty out my trunk to get at the battery in my chevy.
yes it IS a stupid place for the battery, but once past that, I had to have an AGM and the only one I could find in Canada in group sizes 26, 75/86 was an Odyssey for almost $500cdn plus $100 shipping. There were many other sizes at around the $200-50 range, but not the one I needed for OEM measurement's of 9 1/16" L x 6 13/16 W x 8" H.
So I found a group 35 that would fit perfect, BUT it's a right hand positive, and Journey's need a left hand positive. I thought of buying it and just turning it around, but this one had downward indented posts and I didn't think the add battery monitor on the ground would clear it enough. Then I found a group 34 at Canadian Tire with very close measurements of 10"L on the bottom, 6 3/4" W and 8" H. I had already measured the battery tray and figured it would work, so I bought one. In the end it took a "little" bit of adjusting, but I got it in nicely! I had to remove the battery handle and sheer off the holder for it on the ground side. Then I cut the rounded corners off the battery tray with a grinder in seconds, painted the bare metal and the battery fit in perfectly. The only other issue I had was getting the battery in WITH the top holder in place already (couldn't get it in after). So I tied a string to it from above and held it there in place while I put the battery in it's place. The battery terminals were never an issue as I found a nice place to push the positive one up in place out of the way and it held both of them up out of the way very nicely :)
Plot twist: He installed the same old battery.
I wish I had known this before I bought my 2011 Journey. This is the stupidest design I've ever seen.
And that's why I will NEVER BUY A DODGE! Thanks for the video Rich.
Sal Hernandez that is all it takes for u to abandon this great historic enovative company look at other companies trying to save space, alternater down in the weeds ,lift out engines to do plugs and change clutches u haven't seen nothing yet .that battery is easy
Thanks for the video, its great.
At -40 changing a battery will be a breeze.
Im sure the plastic wont pop
Chrysler really outdid themselves with this one- Ive seen some goofy engineering from them before (Having to drag the alternator across the radiator fins as you rip it out from underneath a Dodge Intrepid comes to mind)but this is the best- the battery poles are perfectly positioned to arc across the body sheetmetal, causing the battery to explode 4 inches from your face. This guy almost did it in the video.
DO NOT do this job without proper eye-protection! Chrysler is trying to maim you because you didnt let them charge you $300 to change your fucking battery-
Words cannot express the burning hatred image for anyone involved in this design.
Thank you for the post,it will help me in a couple days from now 😊
This weekend I plan to be responsible, practice my skills and talents and work towards my dreams 😇
Definitely the worst vehicle I've ever purchased.
This is so insane, that I couldnt stop watching. I do not have a Dodge and now I will NEVER.
OMG i almost just bought one of these, thank God for bad credit lol. I never got it.
Michael Riley I wasn’t that lucky..😩😩😩
damn your credit must be terrible, because dodge is VERY GENEROUS wit credit lol but this wouldve made your credit worse
Mikey. Anyone who starts a sentence with "OMG" doesn't deserve credit!
Still living in your moms basement??
🤣🤣🤣
@@NormEvansChallenges Your mom called. Said it was time for you to clean up your room in the basement, Normy!
Thanks short and to the point!
ya don't have to completely remove the splash curtain, just the locks on outer wheel well, then fold it backwards, and if u take it to dealer to replace they will only charge u a $350 dollar fee to change it, but then we all know dealer shops are govern by thiefs...
Walmart will change the battery without any extra charges.
@@electrician48023 thank you for info! can I buy battery from autozone and take to Walmart to change it? i see the cost of $10 but i could pay more but not $350 ouch
@@electrician48023 walmart doesn’t do dodge journey because they claim it takes over two hours 😅 learned the hard way
Thanks!!! So usefull!!! Dodge, I hate you for this. What the hell were you thinking guys!!! Send your engineers to fry in hell !!!!!
What do you mean about losing memory? I've changed plenty of batteries in my day and never dealt with any memory modules or anything. I have a 2016 journey and need to make sure i dont damage the wifes car when i change this god forsaken battery. Thank you
I have a 2013 and changed a battery before not knowing this, I believe this is how I lost bluetooth capabilities
Any helpful tips on what you ended up doing to save the memory for your wife's Journey? Someone mentioned the memory saver is necessary to save Bluetooth and other features settings.
Initially they were going to put the battery behind the muffler....yes, I own a Journey.
Watched to help a friend with his - this is a great resource. Thank you for the time you took to make this. It's tremendously helpful.
Thanks for fine video Rich! I like the batt SAVER
Came here after my wife told me how much her new battery cost. NOW I GET IT!
JaideS Seriously what does the price of the battery have anything to do with where its located ?
Right?
What size of battery etc. I need to replace and just want to know what kind from Napa or tractor supply I should buy before hand.
The battery saver must be put on before removing the negative battery cable.
what does it save?????
I was thinking the same thing.
"That's all there is.." LOL what a PITA! I see torn rotator cuffs in people's future trying to replace these batteries!
farmboy30117 no se desprograma el radio
Lol
What is the memory saver for? I don't have the machine you hooked your car up to
Same. Did you ever find out?
What memory should we be concerned with losing? I have a 2012 Journey RT and I plan to change the battery since it is now 8 years old.
The battery saver is there to remind you of happy memories when you bought the car. After changing that stupid battery you won't need a "happy memory saver" ever again :-)
I dont know what the engine bay of a journey is like, and i kind of agree stupid spot behind a weak plastic bumper. Get into a minor fender bender at even 15km, good chance you wont be driving home because that battery will be done. But as far as accessibility, for how often a battery needs to be changed, not that big a deal
Thank you Peter Griffin!
Thanks richpin. Another winner.
Good video 👍 but no other video about removing a Dodge Journey battery ever shows plugging in a memory module🤔
Isn't a car/vehicle negative ground? That would mean removing the positive cable first; correct?
It starts of like is is going to be an April fools video (something like Chris Fix would do)...... "Now after we remove the left front whee"...... like wtf???
Unfortunately it is not a joke.... I spent about an hour yesterday having to do this same thing.
Has to be the ultimate worst design. Did they forget to add the battery in the planning phase??
hi you can show where there is a hole? Dodge journey 2009
we can push through the cables (for example, from where the engine is) to the interior of the car to the driver. I want to plug the cable and I don't know which way. Thank you.
My grandfather wants to change the battery, but he doesn't have that memory box. What should he do?
After all of the years that Chrysler has had to reengineer this poor battery position, one would think that they could of found a better place to locate it.
Even under the rear seat like Mercedes would be better then where Dodge continues to put the battery. I hate having to get under seats.. or even in th etrunk area on BMW's but dodge's placement has to be the worse !
yeah, like under the hood behind a headlight like any other fricken car in the last 75 years
Nice 1, Squire - suppose it's kept from temperature extremes down there.
I actually prefer this location than in the trunk under the carpet where so many other manufacturers put them. If you're like me it take longer to empty the trunk than to pull a tire.
Lmao
Bravo! Dodge BRA FUCKING VO...AND TO THE SOUL WHO DID THIS VIDEO...YOU SIR ,ARE THE REAL MVP!
So we pulled the battery and there's a third cord with a circuit plate. I can't find anything explaining where that goes and what it does. I'm guessing it's the root of my problem too. It has to go to the negative side as it doesn't reach the positive side. No idea where or how to secure it. Anyone familiar with this? Appreciate any help. Stuck in Nebraska until I figure it out.
And how would you jump start it?
I just spent 5 hours taking the old battery out and putting in a new one. In a 2014 journey. Biggest pain the a#$# I have ever seen. Getting to the battery was not that difficult. But getting the clamps and the holding bracket was a b$&$*,!
Awesome, thank you... 😎😎😎
What do you expect it's Dodge engineering. Imagine needing to do this when it's cold outside.
Yeah it's -8 out in Maine about to scrap this pos dodge after watching this thought under the back seat was bad in a buick
Right
do I have to put a memory saver
Noe Longoria I replaced my battery without the use of a so called memory saver. In fact this is the first time that I've ever heard of such a thing. Do you have to??? I didn't...
I would suggest using the memory saver. After I had my battery changed, I had to reset my preset stations on my radio and reset the clock. I have just the base model without navigation, preset seat, side mirrors and pedal positions and all that other fancy stuff so it wasn't that much to reset everything. But if you have all of the fancy technology like navigation, etc., the next time you go to use it, you will have to reset everything. So, yes, I would recommend using the memory saver.
I would say it depends on the situation. If you dont have the $2400 dollar diagnostic computer for this particular turd, the only way to do a cam/crank sensor position relearn is to disconnect the battery and force the computer to do a self diagnostic
Hopefully you’ll answer before tomorrow when I have to do ours.
First, ours is a 2010 R/T. Any difference then the 2009 here that you did?
Second, curious as to why you removed the negative cable first and then hooked up the memory saver. Because once you remove the negative did that not cut the power to the modules and things that needs the memory saved?
Lastly, I’ll be using an OBDII memory saver that hooks up to a 12 volt battery. I can’t use the cigarette lighter version because the lighter requires the key in and on to work.
Thanks in advance...
Thank you good sir, thought I’d blow a gasket next
Glad to help
Could somebody please tell me the correct battery MODEL NUMBER replacement, for 2010 Journey (2.7L V6)?
What specific size battery do I need
Won't the computer reset to factory specs after a few hundred miles of driving without a battery saver?
I just changed mine. What a royal pain. I will say I was expecting it to be worse, but it took me almost an hour. Any other car would be 15 minutes.
Anyone know where I can find a replacement panel that covers the battery?
Didn't know this when I bought the car.
Peter Griffin! How’s Lois and the kids?
Will auto zone even replace this type of battery?
No they won't
@@desireerivera6270 I asked if Walmart would do it and they said yes, that was even after I told them where the battery was and what they had to do to replace it.
Do you have tthe memory saver?
So I was driving a journey for a rental and this guy came up to me at popeyes and was like " I need to jump start my car" so I pop the hood and were deadass trying to figure out where the battery was for a couple minutes.😂😂. I thought I was going blind. What a poor design
Do I need a battery saver on a 2010 journey?
How many millimetres is that push pins?
Smashing tutorial ;-D.
A very stupid place to put one, if i had to do that i would plop a cap on live or negitive so i cant short it out when lifting, that would be my luck lol.
Ahh injecting 12v dc on to the 12v pin of the obd, very sneaky :-D
I was watching it very closely when i removed the battery.
0:20 "after we remove the wheel" lmao😂😂
ENOUGH SAID... exactly why i will NEVER buy a chrysler product
It is unbelievable the placement of this battery.
This has to be the worst fucking location to put the battery in. Can't wait to replace my fuel sucking journey for the Corolla hatchback.
Do you actually need a memory saver?
@Davie boy 1970 & others 😱I totally agree ! Daughter have is her 2005 stratus learned battery was under wheelwell ..Went to buy a car Looked@journey & popped the hood looked at the battery Still bought the dam Dodge Wth was I thinking! Can't help but laugh at myself and say UDAzz
Funny why didn't touch show how to get the battery hold down on and off.
What is the size of the battery? Is 74a power enough?
It looks like a Group 26 or a Group 27 will work on the Dodge Journey.
Hii.. I was wondering what gauge size the positive is and is it the same for negative ? I need new terminals
Didn't see the unscrewing or tools to use.
Hi Rich, holy cow....could they have put that in a harder place! How is your Dad doing? Thanks, see ya next time.
Yes they had to really work at it on this one.Dad is pretty good but we are still looking for someone to drive with him to the Stowe,Vt auto show next Saturday.
I'am sure they do....lol
joel mccoin they could have put in the cargo area behind a fender panel
+richpin06a 2009 dodge journey starter replacement, do you have video or information on how to begin????
and you could tell me how to recover. the memory ?
They designed the car then they realized: “Wait a minute… We didn’t consider the spot for the battery.” Therefore they used that location, and they had to resize the battery to fit it in.
Now the slightest side collision mess the electricity
It is quite the unique place to put a battery i agree.
That was definitely a chore. I'm Ole school. But I did it.
Glad you got it fixed.
This man sounds like ernie off sesame skreet
Thank you, now I will not buy no stupid Chrysler product I don't know where they get their engineers from
Mercedes. they told Chrysler where to put things.
It really isn't all that inconvenient. You don't have to jack up the vehicle and remove the wheel. Just crank the wheel to the left and you will have plenty of room to work. As long as you have a tool to remove the plastic clips($3 @ walmart) it is easy to access the battery to replace. 5 min with the proper tools
My old neighbor did this for me, apparently he loves encountering challenges in vehicles like this.
Measurements of the battery please
i replace the battery and alternator ..now it wont turn on
Is the memory saver necessary?
No
Do you need any special tool to save the computer memory from the ODB2 port ?
"So that's all there is..." Really?
Marcus Smith lmao, yeah, all you have to do is remove the wheel, the fender liner and damn near crush your hand between the battery and the frame and BAM 💥 " -done lmaoooo
Stupidest place ever. Next time just put in trunk. Only thing hard was the dam wheel well shrouded those clips were hard to take off in -30 c weather in the snow. Thank for the video
You don't need a memory saver. I just did this yesterday on 2015 V6 journey. There is no radio code input required. Just take the old battery out swap the new one in. Simple. It's actually not that bad a job. Just taking the fenderliner off is annoying.
If you think thats a tough job, try putting a rear wheel back on a Suzuki VTROM by the side of the road. Replacing a Dodge Journey battery is a pain as to the time, but its a simple job.
Why in the hell did I decide to buy THIS!?! I have the 2014, after a car wash the battery light came on. Everything I read tells me battery saving mode or alternator. Were in the middle of a pandemic..only making 200 bucks a week with 6 children. Why 2020!?! Why!?!? 😭
That is taking too much time. I'm having dodge do it, don't care if they charge me 200 i dont' have the time do that. Plus its 30 degrees right now here. By doing this i would have to be off work losing money. Ill just work an extra 5 hours to cover the amount they will charge me
I was getting a jump from my sisters dodge journey and had to squeeze my hands to get the jumper cables on the battery terminal i dont know why dodge would put the battery in the engine like that
Don't blame the designer, it's the exec who approves the design .
there are terminals under the hood to connect a changer or jump cables, don't have to go directly to the battery.
