    The '86 K10 is 34 years old. Yes, it's not as comfortable, powerful, etc. But.... Will the 2020 still run in 2056? And if a sensor fails you're stuck. The K10 can be fixed with basic tools. New is NOT better. More comfy, powerful, etc. but give me reliability everyday of the week.

      On average new cars are much more reliable than older vehicles. I certainly don't miss carbs, don't miss changing out condenser points, I don't miss lubing the chassis, ball joints, U joints, etc. I don't miss the overall lifespan of a vehicle being about 100k miles. And I don't miss having to be on the lookout for rust after about 5 years. For a daily driver, give me the new vehicle every time.

    • @MCatwar
      @MCatwar 4 роки тому +2

      if new wasn't better, it wouldnt have been released in the first place. I'd take reliability every day of the week as well, which is why I'd take the new one. overall, I'd still suck it up and understand I'd get a less efficient, weaker, overall worse platform and go for the old k10 because of personal preference, but from a pure logical and statistical standpoint I'd be labeled insane haha

I'm by no means a brand loyalist but I've seen heaping piles of garbage come out of Chrysler's production lines. i know people with those new ram ecodiesels that blew a motor at 15k miles. my friends' grand cherokee has 100k on the chassis and has been through 2 motors, and the current one has already developed some lifter noise haha

      New cars are not meant to last, max 5-6 years then they should be thrown away and you should buy a new one (in the eyes of car makers). Specially the parts they build in the new cars are meant to break after a few years or miles... so it is really insane to even buy a new car.

      @Luis Bolanos eh I disagree. I always find it cool when an older vehicle, whatever kind, drives around. If anything, that's better to be unique and not just fit into a monotonous society. But, preferences aside (because saying old trucks look better etc is ALL preference) you are correct. New trucks are better in every single way possible except for simplicity. But the simplicity was a double-edged sword.

    • @MCatwar
      @MCatwar 4 роки тому

      @Luis Bolanos yep I totally agree. that's where I'm at too. I would take the old truck because of the novelty. Using a 36 year old truck to haul a backhoe up the mountain passes? Yeah, lemme pre-tune my carb for the elevation, and have fun with my terrible powerband, gearing, brakes, and suspension. these trucks, while they defnitely (to me, at least) have more novelty and look cooler, definitely could never stand up to the standards of today. Ask a hotshot driver whether they'd want a brand new truck to pull their goosenecks or some 35 year old shitbox haha!

    Excellent comparison video! The best things about the 80s and SOME similar makes and models and those of even earlier manufacture is that they are much more owner/back yard mechanic friendly due to their simplicity (far, far fewer electronic components if any for example). Since I started watching your videos, and while I was looking for a "beater" for hunting and fishing trips, I discovered that trucks like your K10, that are still road worthy, especially those with functional 4X4 capability, are being horded like some folks are hording Charmin these days. If they have such trucks they "ain't for sale". The same is becoming true of newer trucks like my '05 Z71 Colorado and your '10 Silverado. As usual, an enjoyable and informative video....Keep 'em comin'!

That making the roll down window option available in trucks is actually more costly on the manufacturer’s part than powered windows, but it still remains the cheaper option on the price tag, and more affordable go to repair for the buyer.

Canyon lasted the longest at 345,000 miles, other 2 died around 200,000 miles. Recently retired the Canyon for a 82 GMC C2500 because she is dead simple to maintain, no computers and she rides nice for a truck, will probably exchange the Carburetor for a Holley Sniper Throttle Body kit. The Square bodies will outlast the others based on maintenance (cost and ease).

    I mean, your 2010 is just a WT... I have an 04 Tahoe with a screen, navigation, 2 person memory, adjustable pedals, auto dimming mirrors, heated mirrors, heated seats, push button 4wd of course, auto 4wd, per tire psi indicator, on the fly driving computer with all the same stuff as today's.... MPG instant, average, trip a and b, oil life, washer fluid level, etc... all the same stuff as modern. Also has a drop down screen and DVD in the back, rear ac and heat, rear radio, cd, dvd, audio aux... I mean... most of this could be had in the 99 Escalade or Yukon ... or even the Tahoes back then. Similarly you can get different towing packages, engine options, etc. Even the Tahoes and such could have 6L, and they are all LSX based now... so they've all been extremely reliable since the 00/02 era... depending on vehicle. You've just got a certain group of vehicles there, but not really indicative of what the eras offered a whole. That 2010 WT had in dash screen options for example, nav, onstar, etc... had a luxury interior model and so forth. Had other engine options, amenities, etc...The 2020 is specifically a large caliber work tuck, towing in mind. I mean, I guess this is all well and good as a comparison of three different generations of three different types of truck. Okay, really, the 86 and 10 were close enough, the 2020 was too far up in scale regarding what it was... the large scale 6.6 fleet work truck and all. The other two were basic standard cab, stripped down, truck trucks with basic engine options for their era... in whatever various state they happen to be in under your ownership today. The other one is a brand new high caliber fleet hauler with max engine option and full interior base tech loadout. Quad cab and all... so again, it just sort of stands out. Would have almost been more interesting with a base 86, base 96, base 02, base 06, base 07-10ish, then maybe the 20... Those all have distinct difference though, even in WT model, and would likely show a lot more nuance in some, and a lot more insane jumps in performance in others.

    I think for a daily my top pick would be the 2010, nice combination of modern and simple, everything you need not too much that you don't. Definitely would take the K10 for a fun/project truck, nothing quite like a classic squarebody truck, whether it be GM, Ford or Dodge. I mostly agree with your take on the reliability but I also would consider how much easier that K10 is to work on, sure you don't have OBD2 diagnostics but it's a dead simple powertrain to work on and keep running. My daily right now is my '05 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi (before the MDS crap.) Not the most well maintained truck, some clunks and sounds here and there, power steering is about shot, but she's got the badge of being a 200K+ mile truck on the original engine and transmission. I've hauled about 4-5 thousand pounds with it, hauled my buddy's broken down Ford Ranger on a sketchy car dolly. Maintained 45 MPH fine, could've gone faster but we didn't trust the dolly. For the most part all I ever put into the truck is fluid changes, only time I was stranded was by a bad starter cable, ended up getting a new starter too but she starts up like a dream now. This was one of the best comparisons I've seen in a long time, honest and you actually tested the things that matter in a truck, great job!

  • @N0Fumar

    In my opinion, I would rank the trucks this way.
    86 - Most fun on the property, around town, getting lunch and dinner
    2010 - Much better for around town and longer hauling trips. Would likely use this for most of the towing and hauling just because of better suspension over the years.
    2020 - If I'm being payed to haul something a long distance and *need* everything to work.
    I would love the 86 for fun little trips and use the 2010 for more "this needs to get done" type work. 2020 only if it's for my job.

    The 2020 it's a beast, I know there's a lot of "I'll bet it won't make it to 30 years bla blah" but its a beast, one gen that's was left is the 88 to 98 or so... That was the must reliable gen, was simple, good power etc etc all the parts are so cheap , the interior is more comfortable than the years before, better mpg etc etc I love that generation, and next... The ones whit the first 5.3 I think where so good , better than the ones that got after 2008 or so... They where more refined but still a truck that where basic to us to repair , they are no so techy ... And the Ls based engine are great for gaining hp with a little effort. Yeah the 86 is good.. but it's something that is in our hearts hahaha I thing the next generation (88-98) put two world's together reliable and confort ,the next one (2000 to 2007 or so)sadly where the last generation for me to be reliable... The new ones? If I got the money.. I will buy one.. to give up on him in 4 or 5 years.
    I got a 95 Dodge Cummins, I live it, but my 2001 f250 is better in every thing except the engine hahaha better brakes, comfort, power, suspension etc etc and my 2003 Dodge Cummins is better than the other ones.. I got to say Eather gas or diesel... 2006 to 2008 Sims to be the dead of "I will easily and cheaply repair it " that's why I keep my old trucks...

Now pickups are like driving a space shuttle with all the screens, bells, whistles, and required options they come with, and they've completely priced themselves out of the reach of people who actually need a new pickup truck. I'll give you a pro-tip: I'm pretty sure you can swap starters between that '86 truck and the motorhome. I can tell by the sound that the truck has a nice high-torque, gear reduction starter on it which is ideal for the heat soak issues the RV is having. What you need to know is, there are two flywheels and flexplates. Either a 153 tooth or a 168 tooth. You identify which you have by looking at the starter mounting bolt pattern. If they are straight across, it is 153 tooth. If they are offset, it is 168 tooth. Starters don't interchange between the two sizes, but they "should" between like sizes no matter the engine. Do your own research beforehand, of course.

      Are big block and small block starters the same? On small blocks I do believe that trucks used the 168 tooth. Cars with a 305 used the 153. My go to gear reduction starter is crossed from a 98 Silverado with the L31 350.

Recently upgraded to a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L All Terrain crew cab with 6.5 foot bed (a bit rare I think), and man it is a sweet truck! It’s powerful, quiet, luxurious, and tough! The newer ones are more complex, but I think they will last with some decent maintenance (like any mechanical device, if you treat it right, it will treat you right).
