"I hope the previous owner of this truck sees this video and feels embarrassed." Not a chance, You could understand a few missed things. But it is obvious the guy is a crook.
He ether purchased the Truck as a basket case. Did the bare minimum to make it run.
Or he might have had the same thing happen to him. And just decided to pass on his mistake.
      Dishonest ether way.
I have made mistakes buying vehicles. Goten in over my head.
But I never passed on my mistake to others. Sold them as known and ate the loss.

There are certainly ways to avoid this kind of scenario but some of the red flags were already set up by you to alert you but you bypassed them. For example, I buy used cars but I do not buy them sight unseen from a long-distance away. One reason I do not do this is because when something goes wrong there is no one nearby to turn to to make it right. You saw that there were problems and you achieved a discount, but the problems were bigger than the discount that you received. You were not willing to walk away because you had driven too far and did not want to go home with nothing. That is a problem. If it was a more local sale you could have gone home to think about it and make a better inspection and negotiation down the road. You even said you that "you would have bought it anyway" knowing what you now know you are just upset that he didn't tell you"". wrong! If you said that to a judge (me in this case) he would say you just gave away your case. You could sue for half the cost of the repairs since they were undisclosed and you would get a settlement of 1000$ How much of your time would that be worth to you? having said all that I think it is great that you actually sorted out the vehicle. Did you replace the AC compressor? Just wondering. In the end, it is really up to you if you keep the vehicle and use it until you have gotten over your bitterness and got some value from it or turn it over now and go on to your next project. Your work ethic is good and I wish you all the best with your projects. Even if you go out of your way to make sure that your buyers get a good value from you, do your best to protect yourself from getting too excited about new "finds" and consider all the scenarios. It doesn't hurt to double question people about their guarantees and assertions and find out what they say they will do if y some issues crop up down the road. By the way, as you probably know: 40 miles per hour is a minimum on many interstates. 35 is pretty slow. So I know you've got patience and determination when you need it. Can't wait to see if you can fix the transmission on your new find!

I will never purchase a vehicle from a “mechanic” again. I had the same problem in 2010 with a 1997 Nissan Max. Back then used cares were very expensive because of the cash for clunkers program, and the recession. The car was very badly repaired from an accident, but I did fix most of the problems and drove the car till 2016. I will say the a/c always blew cold. That’s important here in Florida. Your new truck looks great. Good job. I always look forward to your videos.

Bought an IS300 from a guy that owns a shop in the next town over, said he did the spark plugs, coil packs, valve cover gasket, timing belt, and water pump, he even had a "work order" to prove it. Well I didn't read it closely because it was actually just an estimate the he had printed out himself that same day. None the work he said was done was actually done, and the car broke down on me the next day because so much oil had leaked into the spark plug valley and it was misfiring on 2 cylinders. That car wound up being such a headache, seemed like every month there was something that needed to be fixed and none of it was cheap.

Check the DRAC module - those older ones had issues, and almost nobody knew about it. My old '92 G30 van had one that was intermittent. The speedometer would get erratic, or quit working altogether, and the transmission would go into limp mode. I mention this because I didn't see the speedometer working. I had spent over $1000 on mine (after a transmission rebuild) trying to get it fixed for a year or so. I finally stumbled onto the DRAC module and noticed that it had been getting wet (the windshield had a leak that would drip water onto it). I picked up one at the junk yard for $25, matched the jumpers and replaced it. It never acted up on me again.

Just keep an eye out for any cross contamination of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil.... Or the smell of it exiting the exhaust. But I'm sure you won't have to many problems with this tank! I've had the honor to own an 85 very similar to the one you purchased and it was road hard and put up wet countless times and kept on ticking, but finally circum to the elements and rusted to death. Guy said he was a mechanic and that it would only need brakes for inspection. When I took it into my mechanic he told me this truck wasn’t even worth saving. Holes in frame, missing e brake, obliterated cab mounts and heatshields, all brake components and suspension components were shot as well. Paid 3400 and the repairs would have been over 6 grand. I’ll admit I probably should have looked at it better but from what I saw it looked good and it drove great. Went through something similar with my father on a 99 Grand Cherokee. He got it for $1200, but we didn't realize the transfer case was shot along with a slew of electrical issues and an overdrive issue... We've slowly sorted everything out but we definitely should have looked it over better. But, on the plus side, the 4.0 runs strong, and everything's been fairly easy to troubleshoot and fix. Thankfully.

One look told me all I needed to know. But the sad part of it is the guy knew all about the rotten frame and still was willing to rip off the next person to fall for it. Most people coming along can't and will not replace a frame. If you are not a DIY person it is a Huge expense.

Any time you're looking at a used vehicle, you're looking for reasons to walk away, not for reasons to buy it. If it's a private seller and you start to see things that don't add up then that's a huge reason to walk away unless it's an absolute steal, as there are plenty of people out there who do their own repairs, but a lot of them do them badly, and, often, dangerously because they really don't know better or understand the risks in what they are doing...

I had a 2002 GMC 2500 HD that was just a beautiful looking truck. Red with a matching cap clearance lights 6.0 V8 engine 4 wheel drive extended cab 109000 miles when I sold it. No rust bought it from a dealer that ran a body shop. Was his personal truck. Loved the truck but it was a money pit when it came to repairs. Even replacing a fuel pump is an expensive job. Keep it for 3 years and finally sold it to a young guy with a small repair garage. I told him when he bought it it needed brakes all around including emergency brakes. He bought it with out hesitation telling me he had looked for over a year to find a truck like this without rust.

Bought a 1991' Ford Ranger XLT for 2000$ over a week ago. Has 130k on the motor and the transmission works just perfectly, have driven it for over 100 miles since then, I barely go anywhere anyway. Needs the fuel gauge fixed and the rear view mirror glued back on and that's it. Guy I got it from was a pastor or assistant pastor at the local church in that town and was a military veteran as well. Hopefully I was lucky but haven't had any issues at all and I plan on dailying it throughout college. Sucks to see you got screwed out of that 2500 though, it's why you should have an extra person come along with you, preferably a car person.

If the flashing check engine light continues you may want to do a "crankshaft variation learn procedure". The p0300 can be a result of the ecm thinking that there is a misfire when there isn't. This procedure is needed after any engine repair or ecm update. Also I noticed I had to do it on my truck also after the battery went dead. You may also notice the converter coming out of lockup on the highway. This is because the ecm inhibits lockup when it see's engine misfire (real ones on erroneous). I have the same truck with what I think is the same power train. 6.0 engine 4l80 trans. It took me a long time to figure this situation out. Hope it helps you.

The problem with buying trucks used is they are generally more beat on than a car would be.
The drivers are predominantly male, trucks are used to haul weight, and they are used off road sometimes.
Most cars don’t end up in the same shape as a truck will.

Unfortunately it's a tough lesson to learn, bud. But like you said, buy cheap, and fix yourself. Just bought a '94 K1500 for $800. Tires on it alone were worth that much. Owner said it was stuck in limp mode, and I took his word for it. Turns out it isn't limp mode, it has 1st 2nd N N N R P lol. Easy enough rebuild, but it has so many more problems that I couldn't see from it just sitting there. I can fix it all, but an honest seller beforehand would have made things so much easier to tackle from the start

Sux that you got left holding the bag on the silverado. I bought a 2011 F150 supercrew 4x4 with 64000 miles on it last october. It has the obligatory rust in the cab corners, but it also needed 400.00 worth of suspension parts right after I got it. I was changing the oil due to the no name oil filter on the 5.0, and I saw both front coils were broken in the struts. It also wiggled like jello on the highway due to the rear shocks both pretty well blown out. Some kyb parts, and she's riding like new. I always change out fluids on every used vehicle I buy, you just can't know if anyone ever did it, and hard part failure due to bad lubrication is a bitter pill to swallow.

If there's a next time, when you get a bad feeling about a vehicle you're buying for work/road use, walk away from it (this applies to everyone) save yourself the aggravation of having to fix someone else's screw ups like the ones in this video. Also it's a good idea to look under the dash to be sure everything looks good that there's nothing obviously missing/not connected......

That's a 3-speed TH400 in the dually. Those are not electronically SHIFTED, but they have an electric KICKDOWN solenoid like all Turbo 400s have. The difference is, yours should be controlled by the PCM instead of a switch on the gas pedal linkage like my truck has. I noticed your speedo doesn't look like it is working so I suspect that there is something wrong with the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) mounted in the transfer case. That very likely could be causing the PCM to keep the kickdown engaged. You could test that theory by speeding up and seeing whether the transmission finally shifts to third at higher rpms.

Same for us but he only told us theres a coolant leak and oil leak which ive checked and was ok with. the issues however piled up ...timing chain started slapping after driving an hour home and theres a small bearing knock. Oil was watery and pitch black, cams worn... i myself replaced water pump and power steering pump, gaskets, timing chain, tensioners, gaskets. Added heavier weight oil, 10w30 and lucas stabilizer after flushing the old oil with seafoam and marvel mystery oil. Now theres just the small knock. 2002 ram 1500 4.7 with 190k miles. Bought for 2800. Me repairing everything in total was like 500 extra bucks, thing runs awesome aside from the small knocking and lots of oil vapors coming out the pcv ports. Just needs suspension fixes and other performance mods.
Make sure you know what you're buying.

My son's first vehicle was a 2002 Chevy Silverado regular cab work truck. We try never to speak of it. Check engine light and brake light came on after 100 miles . We took it back to the dealership and they "fixed it". You know what happened. Dealership just disconnected the battery because those lights came back on after 100 miles. Get out of here was the dealership 's attitude when l returned. After a couple thousand in repairs, his brother and I sold it while he was in boot camp in SC. I told the buyer it was a money pit. Gave him the receipts for the brake repairs, check engine light repairs, 4 brand new tires and wished him luck with it. The buyer came back about a month later because NJ dmv wanted to know why he only paid 2.5k for a truck listed for 5k. Unbelievable. The DMV doesn't cut you a break if you over pay for a vehicle.
