I remember going with my grandfather to work in the 70s I was a little boy , we would work all day and on the way home he would stop and get himself a beer and me a soda ... back then you could drink and drive and you didn't have to wear a seat belt😂😂
I remember being pulled over and getting my first ticket. The cop couldn't find anything, so he says "I'm going to have to cite you for no seatbelt." I replied "That's a law!!." Mind you you still could ride in the back of a pick-up truck at the time in California. SMH

New engine with efi and a 5 speed will make me a good driver that will last the rest of my life easily 👍🏻. And I can actually fix the damn thing

The one thing that all 3 brands seem to all forget about is the bed especially the height of them and the unuseable lengths of beds on new trucks i saw a man at a home depot trying to get up in the bed of a new ford f250 to load plywood and fell off the stupidly high tailgate and crushed his shoulder and arm so badly his bones were protruding out of his arm they had to lifeflight him because of internal injuries from the damn tailgate fall. My 02 chevy 1500 4x2 is like your 71 c10 low bed i can reach over the side and get up in the bed with ease i think these engineers need to take some of the older trucks and design beds with practcal heights again
With the price of a sheet of plywood approaching $70 bucks (Home Depot yesterday) I now have my sheets delivered one at a time in a Hummer Limousine. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a two tone (white cab, seafoam green body) '71 Chev 3/4 ton pickup when I was young and LOVED it. (It was my Dad's.) If you can drive a truck in the after-life, this one's for me. I can still remember the license plates LLX 321, and pulling in the camper mirrors when I parked in a ramp. Loved the long bench seat and simple gauges. Filled the back with sand during the winter (and was always helping others who were stranded.) The 350 engine was easy to work on. Loved the sound of the muffler on a cold day. I really like the ride in the GMT400s. I like the seats. Like sitting in your living room. They have issues but most are easy to fix/upgrade. I'm putting the 05 on the market, we'll see if people really want a bare bones, regular cab, 8 foot bed pick up.
My dad had a 71 GMC that he called “old blue”. He used to let me Drive it by myself when I was 13 up and down the field roads of the family farm. It was the first truck I drove, or anything for that matter, and I felt like a king behind the wheel. Sadly it was in rough condition and time for him to get a new truck so I never got to drive it with an actual license but either way it’s a memory I will always have. Thanks for sharing yours.

Also had a 1981 jeep wrangler I put a zz 350 in with a trimic 5 speed and a atlas all gear transfer case and a 4 inch lift that was a beast also! Wish I still had those two!!
They cost about the same right now to buy, from what i’ve seen in asking prices. Both are cool in different ways. For a weekend cruise or to a local show, easy choice. For a trip or daily, also an easy choice....So I want both.
Great video! It’s great seeing where we came from and what we had to put up with. I get to transport many of these old gems and get to see the love and passion the owners have for their vehicles.
Brother - You are so darn good at this. What a fun video. Growing up, my Dad mainly bought Chevys/GM (until they consistently let him/us down), but our '74 Silverado was far and away the best, and in fact, I don't recall any issues with it at all. 350/2bbl. Boy did I Iove that truck - and boy do I love your truck. I'm driving a '19 Tundra nowadays.
@@TruckKing and I just caught my boo-boo. There was, of course, no Silverado back then. Ours was a Custom Deluxe. I bought a low-mileage pre-owned '02 2500HD Crew Cab in '03 with the 6.0L. Other than that, I had exactly zero issues with the truck and I still miss it - a lot! Even though it was kind of dog with the combination of the 35s and 6.0L. But man, I still remember how tight it was. No squeaks, rattles, or vibrations.
Super cool to see the changes. I’ve got a 2019 Silverado and I love it. But I must say that more technology doesn’t really just mean better. More stuff to go wrong and it goes wrong easier. The media centre doesn’t sync right pretty often. But I do like having 10 speed 😂
Dad bought a 71 GMC and it was basically mine to drive and use except when he needed it do take a load to the dump or to haul something for a friend. Not nearly as nice as this Chevy example, but the previous owner had a muffler shop and did that truck ever sound good. Dad saw how much I was spending on gas every week and replaced it with an 82 datsun (which was also a really cool old truck).
I guess that explains why the new truck with an extra row of seating still had a higher payload and ready to tow more than the weight of the entire old truck...plus it's payload. 🤔
I don’t know about Canadians, but guys in the States who own these new ones drive like idiots. They have to drive faster than everyone else. That, or they tailgate the car in front.
Great video! I was toying with the idea of a late 60s-early 70s Chev about a year ago as a daily, as I liked the idea of something well-built that was already on the planet. In the end, I'm thrilled with my new Canyon and happy I didn't end up going down that path lol
All the trucks I've owned have been 8' beds, everything just fits. Currently in a '18 rclb sierra 2500hd, was hard to find (and originally ordered for a fleet) but I love it
🤣 Thank you and thank you... I really enjoyed the great comparison video specially when it is the experience that talks. We would also be thankful if there are videos containing all sort of tips, covering DIY maintenance, protection, second hand purchases etc.
I own a 71 c10 with a 350 that is a long bed. The truck really comes in handy around farm and is easy to work on. I own a 2018 silverado z71 that is a great truck but, I do enjoy driving the 71 much more.
Saw the headers under the hood. My first truck was a 78 3/4 ton 4x4 with 400 small block and turbo 400 trans. the third buyer after I sold it lives about a 1/2 mile from here. The old girl is still going strong but I would much rather drive my 2020 sierra AT4 with 6.2l and 10 speed.
I looked up an inflation calculator and 3600 was equal to 23,544 today.. In my opinion the old trucks were better, but I love simplicity too. And the price was better toi, inflation considered
Another quality comparison review. And, we’re the same age. I learned to drive on a dark green ‘72 Chevy C-10 Cheyenne, 350 ci, auto, long bed. Thanks for another entertaining review.
my pops bought a 19771 c20 in 1988 for landscaping, then gave it to me as a high school graduation present in 2000, it has been my daily for 21years and still going, only thing i have changed is the 350 transmission to a 700r4 and rear gears from a 4.10 to 3.53
Great video thanks for sharing, oh the memories! 71 Chevy was going to be my first truck (used of course) I found a nice one in the trade paper and settled on a price etc, then the not so nice gentleman backed out of selling the truck at the last minute, I ended up buying a Ford F100 which was a good 1st truck although I was in love with the 71 Chevy with the V8 engine, heartbreaker lol
Oooh, I'll take it...! You're right about work trucks, I sold my 2002 Silverado and regret it...! Been looking for another long bed regular cab and they're as scarce as hens teeth.......! Grrrrr.....!
When people say "they don't build them like that anymore", I think they are referring to the classic styling, simplicity and durability. I have a 1996 Bronco with manual everything - transmission, transfer case, windows and hubs. I love it. Less stuff to go wrong and it all feels mechanical and durable. They don't build them like that any more. 😉
You're exactly right. I wonder where these new trucks will be in 50 years?? I've owned a few 70-72 Chevy trucks and would love to have another, they may not be as nice as my 2021 High Country 2500 but so much simpler! It's the same with farm equipment, how many of these $300k or more tractors will still be usable in even 30 years? Crazy to think about
Great video! I bought a 1970 Chevy C10 3 speed manual for $450 USD in 1979. 9 years old and the body was already rusting out (Michigan winters). I repaired it and drove it through college and a few years after. I agree with everything you said, my newer GMC Sierra is a world of difference for the better, but the nostalgia (as you say) for the old one is special. Glad to see you still have yours!
My friend had one! A 1971 but plain interior and no power steering! Three on the column and a 350 four barrel. Very tough to park in tight spots with 8 turns of the wheel lock to lock (or so it seemed)!!! I also remember driving my dad's VW Beetles and he also had a 1971 Westfalia. Nice memories but like you mention the new stuff is way better!
Great review, Howard. I’ll take the 71 any day. I’m probably biased, since that’s also my birth year. And I have a 77 C10, which is still a great work truck.
I bought a 2019 regular cab short box 4x2. Only Ford and Ram were offering that configuration. Ram no longer offers it. The rest of regular cab trucks are long boxes. Mine is an XLT, highest trim available in regular cab, with the highest option package (large instrument display and large Sync screen, power drivers seat etc.), a 2.7 Ecoboost, 10 speed tranny and 3.73:1 axle. Runs and drives great and has that classic truck configuration. With a tune this truck is fast!! It's safe to say it has 400 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque in the engine, running a 91 octane performance tune from 5 Star. Just love the looks, utility and performance of this truck.
I'm old school a truck is made to work i prefer an older truck that can still work and get beat up a little bit but I do like the spray in bed liner and extra tie downs in the newer trucks tho
Dad had a 1972 Custom Deluxe 1/2 ton he bought new. 6 years and 100000 miles later it was a worn out hunk of junk. It it lived a hard life on the farm hauling 70 bushels of grain per trip to the mill at harvest time and 1 1/2 tons of feed per trip to the hogs every few days.
As someone that owns a 72 and a 2020. Each their own. Enjoy taking the classic for spins on the weekends with the kids, while the new one gets the job done for long trips and working on weekdays. I am sure back in 72, you had people complaining about A/C not belonging in trucks and how the Apache was more real truck than a new one at the time.
Love the older vehicles. IF they broke down, easy to fix, less electronics to go wrong. If the fan belt snaped, use the misses stockings as a temporary one until ya got to nearest service station. Just don't expect diner for a month tho 😀 The older vehicles made ya learn how to drive. The new ones, put it in drive and the electronics do the rest. Older vehicles through winter time was almost like an ice box cause the heater didn't have enough fan speed to throw the heat out. Gotta love the older vehicles. Put them through hell, they kept going. New vehicles, put them half way through hell and there goes a wallet for the year. There goes diner for 6 months and sleeping in the dog box for 7 months. Loved the video
Twenty years from now, his old Chevy will be worth more than that new Chevy. Also, that particular body style is probably one of the most sought-after body styles the GM ever built.
@@jnicksnewstart only a fool like you would pay more for that 1971 Chevy than the new technology of today. The statement that that old piece of shit reg cab would be worth more money is a stupid statement period. Who would pay more for that crap?
@@bobhirdes6725 Bob, you're a troll. I never said I pay more. I have a 68 Chevelle that sold for a little over $3,000 new. Take your head out of your ass long enough and go see how much they're worth now. New cars are nice but they're disposable. As far as that old truck is concerned, if the transmission goes out, you can buy a remanufactured th350 for less than $1,200 all day. You can short block that truck for under a grand. And. you can do a tune-up for less than $100. I've been looking at used one ton pickups with service beds from Ford, GM, and Dodge to use for business. You can buy a five-year-old truck with around a hundred thousand miles on it for 8 Grand. These are trucks with 8 and 9 foot service beds on them, worth over $3,500 by themselves.
Dodge actually came out with a crew cab pickup in 1962 from the factory.. Ford came out with them in 1965. Albeit they were rare, but were available for ordering. I have 1970 dodge crew cab and 1968 Dodge Crew cab.
@Jim Watson GM came out with a crew cab in 1973. Back in the day there were many coach builders who would make extended or crew cabs before the factory would make them. Mostly for forestry and railroad
Great video, I always enjoy and look forward to video uploads from Truck King. In regards to comment that they don’t build them like how they used to, I would like to add when Steve gets do the recap review in 2070, the 1971 truck will still be running like how it runs today however the 2021 truck will have most of the ECUs and electronics all fried up and TPMS will have a glaring light on the dash along with half dozen sensor issues….so I truly believe they don’t build them like how they used to…The true test will be in 2070 😃
Thank you for this very interesting side-by-side comparison of the gradual evolution over 5 decades ... A shocker to see how much things have changed !
Good historical perspective and comparison. Another key difference is safety, unfortunately these old trucks are not ideal to be in when an accident happens.
Fantastic comparison. I'm already looking for an 8ft bed for my 2013 to stash away for the future. Don't know what will be around when I really need it. Did you guys ever have an acceleration contest with Big Green and the Cheyenne? Keep up the great work.
LMC Truck is great for getting new parts for old trucks. On an episode of Gearz Stacey David shows the audience how to change the length of a box by cutting it and then welding it back together.
You can’t beat simplicity cheaper to fix, cheaper to run, still love the 70s. And last longer. We will see if the new trucks are still around in 50 years. Too many electronics and toys. But great for the people who own there trucks for a short period of time. Lol 😊
Nice 71. I'd take it over the new any day. I've always had long 8 ft beds, because I had a use for them. But now you can't get one unless you go 3/4 ton or 1 ton in a extended or crew cab. If you want extra room inside. My dad had a '70 Chevy CST pickup 8 ft bed. 350 4bbl. Hugger orange and white.. that went 138,000 miles over 16 years. Rust took over the body here in Michigan. So, the motor and trans were rebuilt, and now resides in my 1969 Chevelle.
Dodge made a crewcab in the late sixties thru early seventies; I know because it’s what we used on construction crew back then. The 71 is about utility, beat it up , scratch the bed, smash thru snow drifts. People don’t use trucks as trucks like they did in the day, now they are glorified station wagons. Your spot on about what a pain the old trucks are in comparison to today, but I still miss my old 53. Drum brakes, no PS, 100hp, ten miles to the gallon in a straight six, and so noisy you couldn’t hear yourself think--boy I miss that old truck, she was a challenge to drive: three on the tree of course!
Love the green paint Howard!!😎No reg cab long box in Ontario?? Someone told me you have to have order it..cause they don't press reg cab long box in mass anymore.
2:45 Here in the States, back in the 70's, we drove that same work truck to church on Sunday. And the reg cab held more that 3 people because anyone else that wanted to come rode in the bed! Can't do that (legally) any more.😒
You missed a perfect opportunity to show the price increase the tailgate on the 2021 cost more to replace than the entire 71 truck cost new. Inflation!!
Love this comparison... I’m blessed to have an 09 2500HD and a 69 C10.. love the comfort of the 09... but the 69 has been and always we be my favorite. Simple, easy to work on and just beautiful in how it was designed. The old trucks really have personality compared to any newer truck.. So my take is... if you can purchase an older truck, then do it.... best investment you will ever own.
I had the opposite idea. I want to get a 2016 Canyon and replace the engine with a port injected 4.3L V6 stroker engine, a Tremic 5 speed transmission, Dana 44 rear end and a custom made steel dash. I wanted to simplify a modern truck and make it more reliable by removing all the useless technology. I don't like having a flatscreen tv built into the dash of a truck. A CD player is all I need. If I can't buy the truck I want then I will build what I want.
AWESOME vid! Ya, reality is new trucks are more comfortable, and better fuel economy, but I'd still much rather have a mid 70's resto mod Dodge crew cab than a new truck. Properly built with fuel injection, o/d trans & gear ratio, it could do as well as a new one. The size of new tucks are beyond obscene, just look at the body panels. The wiring harness on the new truck likely weighs as much as the engine in the '71.
well i donrt know bout Canada but i just did a search and there are 58 regular cabs within 100 miles of my house in Virginia, so no they are just fleet sales in USA

Excellent video TK. We’d take more of these anytime!! Keep up the great work guys!
Thanks! Will do!
Noted. All good idea's for the future.
I saw that Big Daddy was doing this video and knew it be a great video and it turns out best truck video I’ve ever watched!!!👍👍👍
Beautiful comparison!! Thank you so much!!! Simply love it!!
I thoroughly enjoy driving my 2010 GMC Sierra 1500. But I love my old '68 C10 with 327, even in stock form it gets many looks.
Wow has time changed in the manufacturing of trucks. Appreciate the comparison and your honesty on which era produced the better truck.
You could buy the 71 brand new for appox. $3,600. That High Country is over 65 grand
I looked up an inflation calculator and 3600 was equal to 23,544 today.. In my opinion the old trucks were better, but I love simplicity too. And the price was better toi, inflation considered
Really enjoyed this video, very good representation of the changes in trucks due to society.
Crazy to think about
Informative and fun comparison. Keep up the great work. 🇨🇦
Thanks for sharing
My friend had one! A 1971 but plain interior and no power steering! Three on the column and a 350 four barrel. Very tough to park in tight spots with 8 turns of the wheel lock to lock (or so it seemed)!!! I also remember driving my dad's VW Beetles and he also had a 1971 Westfalia. Nice memories but like you mention the new stuff is way better!
Great review, Howard. I’ll take the 71 any day. I’m probably biased, since that’s also my birth year. And I have a 77 C10, which is still a great work truck.
Yes you are biased! ...and that's OK
Fun video. I love your '71. FWIW, the 5.3L is 5,328cc, which equates to 326ci, and mates to an 8-speed trans.
Keep it - going forward anything like that will be very hard to find.
I'm old school a truck is made to work i prefer an older truck that can still work and get beat up a little bit but I do like the spray in bed liner and extra tie downs in the newer trucks tho
Great video. I have an 86 f250 and a 2020 ford ranger, love both trucks but the 86 always puts a smile on my face.
Love that '71!
Love your content. Real world. No bull.
Wow! Thanks man. It was so educating to me!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I learned to drive on a 69 c10. Now I own that truck. I love it (when it’s running)
Had the same color 69 chevy CST 396 in high school!!! That was 50 plus years ago !!!! ??? WOW!!! I have a 2020 now gmc same blue as your test model.
Bet you wish you still had it. ;)
great video, brought me back to riding around in my dad's 1979 ford f150. Bench seat and 8' bed
I like the line "older vehicles made ya learn how to drive." I will steal it...
Okay show me an older vehicle that can survive towing 11,000 pounds up and down the mountains, then get 20+mpg when unloaded.
@@srvdean3024 its called truck. I love how these fools overload a 3/4 or even a 1 ton just to be cool.
Great 15 minutes to spend eating my take out noodles. Thanks for the vid, gave a good laugh when you reply to people "and thank god they don't" lol
Glad you enjoyed it
Great review. Like others said, no bs straight to the point
I would have the old Chevrolet any day..that is sharp as hell
You can have it, I would take the 2021 Silverado any day and is sharp as hell
Twenty years from now, his old Chevy will be worth more than that new Chevy. Also, that particular body style is probably one of the most sought-after body styles the GM ever built.
You DAMN right out is my fav year!
Bullshit! Worth more to who? That’s is just a plain stupid statement.
@@bobhirdes6725 Keep riding the short bus, Bob.
@Jim Watson yep ! My family came over from Scotland in the 1700's and settled in Virginia making Chatham Virginia their home
Glad you enjoyed it!
You should try asking King County or town to see if they had a bare bone regular cab eight foot box that you could use?
Good historical perspective and comparison. Another key difference is safety, unfortunately these old trucks are not ideal to be in when an accident happens.
Yeah that would alone would have taken another 10 minutes to talk about. Mine has lap belts only - and they were an option!
But you will look cool when they pull you out of 2nd gen. I have 4 of them so I’m a bit biased
They could easily make slide outs for the 5 ft truck bed so it could convert to an 8 ft bed to haul more.
Now have rim envy. Thanks guys #pickupinmyfuture ?
That's right - we couldn't find one.
Wow the 71 looks like a mid size truck compared to the 2021. Shows how they're getting bigger.
2:45 Here in the States, back in the 70's, we drove that same work truck to church on Sunday. And the reg cab held more that 3 people because anyone else that wanted to come rode in the bed! Can't do that (legally) any more.😒
You can here in Alabama!
Please!!...do anthor video on the 71 Howard???
That 71 chevy is a beauty
You missed a perfect opportunity to show the price increase the tailgate on the 2021 cost more to replace than the entire 71 truck cost new. Inflation!!
Love this comparison... I’m blessed to have an 09 2500HD and a 69 C10.. love the comfort of the 09... but the 69 has been and always we be my favorite. Simple, easy to work on and just beautiful in how it was designed. The old trucks really have personality compared to any newer truck.. So my take is... if you can purchase an older truck, then do it.... best investment you will ever own.
Well said!
They just made the newer trucks bigger so you can be seen more easily when you’re broke down on the side of the road.
I can't wait my 2017 chevy colorado will be a classic truck around in the year in 2050 lol
So much style and simple... Just like my dad's 92 chevy s10...
Amazing video.
Glad you think so!
Collaboration with you and Mr. truck might be pretty cool
I love my '83 3/4 ton k20. She isn't the prettiest or the fastest, but the old trucks have a certain charm to them.
I have a 73 Cheyenne super 20 camper special and i love it I only take her out once a month she’s minty 😁
Like seriously older trucks are so cool, I'd love to have one built in the 90s or something
Your 71, is looking amazing!!
I think so too!
well i donrt know bout Canada but i just did a search and there are 58 regular cabs within 100 miles of my house in Virginia, so no they are just fleet sales in USA
I really enjoyed that one
