Iron Maiden - Flash Of The Blade Full Playthrough

- I hope you will enjoy this cover of Iron Maiden's Flash Of The Blade.
In order to have the guitars a little more up front without having the vocals and rhythm section too low in the mix, I removed all of Adrian and Dave's original parts with the Moises App.
All the guitars you're hearing on this video were played by me.
Guitars:
Gibson Les Paul Standard '50s Gold Top:
sweetwater.sjv.io/g1nxN5
Fender Dave Murray Signature Stratocaster: sweetwater.sjv...
Audio Plugins: Neural DSP Archetype: Petrucci and SLO-100
DAW: Reaper Audio
Mastering: Waves Audio CLA Mixdown
Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 2i2: sweetwater.sjv...
Strings: Ernie Ball 9-46 (Adrian): sweetwater.sjv... & 9-42 (Dave): sweetwater.sjv.io/5gdvmn
Pick: Jazz III XL: sweetwater.sjv...
The harmony section is compositional magic.
Absolutely incredible
An interesting point about Maiden to cover would be to examine Adrian's and Dave's choice of playing power chords with two vs. three notes. It seems that both Dave and Adrian favored two notes in the '80s, whereas these days, Dave seems to use three notes all the time. Also, Adrian's pick holding technique in the '80s was so unique. I could never quite replicate the way he extends his pinky, ring, and middle finger straight and parallel to the pick guard. He looked so cool playing like that, that it was a big part of the reason I took up the guitar for a lifetime.
One of their most underrated cuts in my opinion!🔥
Killer cover, from a 'killer no filler' album. Really fun to play this one!
i' ve always said that from "The number of the beast" to "Seventh son of a seventh son" is their golden era, where "Powerslave" and "Somewhere in time" represent their absolute peak ! :)
Powerslave is the peak of Maiden greatness, bookended by Piece of Mind, where Maiden defined their artistic style and SSoaSS, which features some of Maidens most experimental music. Flash of the Blade is my favourite song on Powerslave. Arguably the greatest album in the history of Metal music, Powerslave is pure perfection from Aces High to Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
How spoiled we were in 1984 to receive this great gift of music. I still remember seeing the vinyl copy of Powerslave on the wall of the record store for the first time, picking it up, feeling the textured album cover and just being blown away. That was nothing compared to listening to it for the first time, though! This is a fantastic song on a masterpiece of an album.
I always love it when you remove the original guitars. I know it’s extra work, but wow, this turned out good! Nicely done, Nico! I’ve already given it two listens.
You and Sara continue to improve the camera shot quality and have really got your filming area just perfect these days. Great lighting, great background, etc…. and you can easily change the background just a little bit to suit what you’re doing in a particular video. Cheers!
I know exactly what you mean - so much so that I remember distinct instances in which I listened to this album for the first few times with the insert in hand, reading the lyrics and looking at the images. I remember how certain parts of the songs impacted me initially... They are clear and absolutely indelible memories that I will forever cherish 😊
And I'm glad you enjoy these covers without the original guitars because it is definitely more work to get them to sound good - mainly because I suck at mixing/producing 😅😅
Such an underrated song, when the drums kick in it's magic!
One of the darkest and most unique sounding Maiden songs imo. Steve's arangement is insane on this one, same as your playing Niko!
Once again powerslave proves the best maiden album. I think they really sealed thier creative legacy with powerslave. Concept, album art work , and songwriting. Just awesome.
Iron Maiden they said, easy to play they said, 3 chords up and down they said and that's it. So you go from 2:00 of this video to 3:10 and you come up with one question "How on earth they came up with this?" and you understand why other established musicians look up to them as the pioneers...
powerslave has amazing guitarwork
Powerslave is probably my favorite album. It was the first Maiden album I bought way back in '84 when I was 12. Flash of the Blade is a great tune! Well done.
my fav maiden song!
What a tune. One of my favourites to play along to. Cheers Niko
Che canzone!!!! Quelle sovrapposizioni di chitarre sono MAGIA PURA!!!
Ben detto! Questa e "The Duellists" sono poco citate di solito rispetto ai classici dell'album come "Aces High" o la title-track ma sono altrettanto grandiose!
@@danbal4185 Io aggiungo anche Back in the Village...
The intro hammer on portion is so much fun to do and it’s bad ass!
Very, very underrated song man.. Maiden would must play it in their shows... Excellent cover Nicko.... Up the irons man 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋🤟🤟🤟🤟🎸🎸
it would be hard for bruce to hit those high notes every night...
I love that you play Dave’s parts on a strat.
Yesssssssssssir🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘. Top notch comme d’habitude mon Nico🤜🤛
Love the guitar extravaganza in the middle section ❤❤❤❤
Perfection made song (and album).
40 years ago ! The magic still there. Thanks Pal.
Someone had the audacity to call this a "filler" song on a UA-cam video. It's my 2nd favorite on this album.
True! Iron Maiden didn’t really do fillers at this time. Their creative peak IMHO was Powerslave, Somewhere in time and Seventh son of a seventh son. Seventh son is my personal favorite.
Great job fantastic song Iron Maiden are also one of the best writing bands on the planet !
Great work Nico, like always! Massively underrated song, one of my favorites from this album.
Finally! I’ve been waiting for this one since I ve been following you. It’s one of my favourites… Amazing work! Thanks!
Awesome cover! One of my all time favourite songs from the band 🤘🏼🤘🏼 Never understood why it wasn't played live
BRAVO! Hai talmente interiorizzato i Maiden che le tue cover sono indistinguibili dagli originali. I love this tune, as well as the entire album, which is among my favorites (if not my favorite one). Cheers from Italy.
È un complimento immenso e per questo ti ringrazio di cuore! 🙏🏻🤘
Flawless! One of their most underrated masterpieces. Your playing never ceases to amaze, Nico. ❤🔥🤘
Also, mandatory that the Gold Top les paul goes with everything from Powerslave. Color scheme matches well. 😁😁😁😁
Thank you!!
And yeah, that gold top does go pretty nicely with the Powerslave theme, doesn't it? 🤔😁
You got it perfectly dude! One of my fav tunes from Powerslave. The solos are superb in this track. Cheers!
Wow. You pick some of my favorite Maiden songs to cover. This is a classic. I remember listening to the cassette tape and wondering how that opening was played. UA-cam is so great for learning to play.
It really is!! I wish we had this back in the day 😅 But also... I kind like that we had to learn how the magic tricks were done bit by bit through trial and error. It all kept its aura of mystery a while longer and the dreamer in me got a lot out of those days 😊
@@LicksOfTheBeast Absolutely!
I feel the steel different now, after watching you play this song 😀 👍
Absolutely phenomenal cover Nico! Thank you and Sarah for this killer video!! UP THE IRONS 🤘
1000 thanks to you!!!
amazing cover as usual! this one is one of my favourites as every member stands out!, specially bruce hitting those high notes
Wow you nailed it!!!! What jam this was!….is!
Gran sonido!!!! Iron Maiden en estado puro. Buena ejecución y gran limpieza en los movimientos. Muchas gracias!!!
Great cover 👍 I have a soft spot for Steve's bass lines on that song also
Oh the bass is pure craziness on this song! 😃🤘
Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
Just PERFECT !!
Weldone for that very great Cover and what a pleasure to listen to this great maiden's song that made my youth.
I am admirative of your covers - i'm sure you could play on the scene with them !
Cheers from Southern France and Up the Irons ;-)
Mille mercis! C'est vraiment très gentil et fort apprécié 😊🙏🏻🤘
Excellent track it might make it's way into the set in the future
You've nailed this. Congratulations
UP THE IRONS!!! 🤘😎💥
you have inspired me to go and learn the song fully now!
Have fun!!
Great job.
The middle section harmony section I've seen played slightly differently. But Niko you sound bang on hear which based on all your other videos I trust your version to be correct as Dave and Adrian played it. Would love a bit of a brake down on that section it's one of the greatest maiden instrumental parts, with no real solo in the traditional maiden form.
This section is very confusing because of all the layering and it's not the typical Adrian Right/Dave Left panning. I'm pretty sure I have most of it down after listening very carefully countless times and trying to isolate parts as much as possible, but there could still be something I missed as well...
That is a really nice strat ... Have you seen Daves other white one with the walnut kneck ?..I.saw Dave murry at glasow at the gig he played a 2010 les paul traditional with the tremolo ( i managed to get the epiphone trad pro version of this guitar its the 2014 ones )...he plays les pauls very fluently especially on the trooper ...he has very admirable taste in guitars as his les pauls are always the 1959 big kneck versions ...and he has the nicest strats I have ever seen !!
Flash Of The Nico's 🎸
Awesome playing as always. I love this song and it never really gets the attention it deserves. Sure the lyrics are a bit 'yay - another sword fencing song' :)...but the guitars are classic Maiden and the drums at the begging are awesome
Incredible. 😮
On the album version during the harmony at the 3 mins mark theres a curious background sound if that makes sense.. always wondered what was happening there, i assume its Adrian using some sort of harmonic or heavy pick attack but never heard it used on any other album 🤔
Yeah excellent track power slave was my favourite album for a long time
Brilliant - as always.
Great song and performance
A-mazing! What I really admire about your style is you never overplay ..your picking hand is very precise ! A great underrated choice! 🤘.
Thank you! It's all about trying to maintain a certain balance where you're keeping things nice and tight, but not stiff... With varying degrees of success at maintaining that 😅
Glad you enjoyed this one! 🤘
I'd love to see you do The Duellists in the future! Love the solo. Sorry if I've already missed that one! 🤘
I did do that one a few years ago actually! 🙂

And I have an interesting video about Adrian's solo on that song as well:

I hope you'll enjoy these! Cheers 🤘
Great job Nico! A great track from a great album.
Just like Somewhere in Time, it's impressive how Adrian Smith stood out on the Powerslave album. The main riffs are all his.
Once again, you have blown my mind! Tasty playing!
Awesome as always, Nico!
Watching this as opposed to just listening to it is really eye-opening. The classical influence is so good. They are truly masters of song craftsmanship and this is a banger of a cover. Kudos and keep it up. These videos are like soul food.
Hey I really appreciate that so much, man! Thank you 🤜🤛
They don't make them as they used to!! Why can't they just make short, effective songs anymore? Great cover as always Nico!
cant stay in you prime forever, they are just not as hungry as they were in the 80's :)
I'm glad that they make longer songs, this song isn't nothing special
@@teemuk1225 2:00 ?
Well, they do have *some* short tracks on the post-2000 albums - like Stratego and Future Past on the last album. 🙂
But yeah, it would be cool for sure if they had a few more short and to the point bangers for the next one. I don't think that's very likely to be the case as that doesn't seem to be the headspace they're in these days. Especially Steve. 😅
Ultimately, whatever keeps them excited enough to record new music and go on tour to support it is fine by me!
Brilliant
Damn, you made that look easy. Awesome cover
Excelent song, my ring tone for a Long time jaja, up the irons
Epic.
Perfect!
Eres un krac con la guitarra!!! 👏👏👏Que envidia me das (sana) viéndote tocar 😍 🎸y es que powerslave para mí es mi inicio en la buena música…que siempre lo seguirá siendo…UP!!!
mindblowing the all the guitarz sounding perfect. great job. as a bass player i would love to play maiden songs with you. my first song on the bass was a maiden song and i'm still in love with the maiden sound.
Awesome!!!!
intereting -i always played the intro with left hand only Hammer ons pull off
I play it that way too sometimes... But on the album you can hear the picked notes 😊
Amazing ...
What do you think of the new album speculation ?
They recently all converged on France where I believe is 2 weeks.
I saw an interview with Bruce during Covid when he said they'd had so much fun recording Senjutsu, that they booked studio time to record another album (as something to do),,,and then realised they needed to calm down - so it wasn't done. Personally think they should have done it if they had that much enthusiasm for it and released it years later
The timing definitely makes sense... But it could also have been a band meeting or early reharsals for the upcoming tour. Recording new material is more likely but I don't have enough info to really offer any kind of insight either way 🙂
Great job! 👏🏻👍🏻🤘🏻
Sounds great, bro!
Full playthrough? Speedrun when?
Great track and performance! If I'm not wrong, it was used by Dario Argento in a horror movie.
Yes, Phenomena - Critters as it was known in North America 😊
Always loved that slow, heavy palmmuted riff in the verses!
BTW - I have an old Kramer guitar I would like to talk to you about. Is it possible to get in touch with you by email?
Thanks
Peter
The only time maiden went neoclassical
🤘 oh yeah - I was the 666th to like this video - up the Irons! 🤘excellent playing, love this song
Many thanks!!
Awesome as always! I would be curious to know a bit about your learning process. I know you have a great ear for Maiden, but when it comes to solos and all, how do you work this out? An idea for a future video maybe? 😅
That is definitely a cool idea for a future video! Thanks for the suggestion!
Powerslave is the best album they ever made, after that it went blur...... 👏👏👏
can you make tutorial for it
Doesnt seem very hard to play, when compared to many other Maiden songs. Let me give it a try...
Regards from your number one Portuguese supporter! (although I'm not a number... I'm a free man!!!)
I would love to get a guitar pick off you, Nico Murray... I mean... Adrian Nico...
Is there a way I send you money so that youd have it delivered over to Portugal? Its my Infinite Dream... as I'm a big admirer of yours!
A guitar pick from my canadian guitar hero!
Sending a guitar pick wouldnt cost that much... but at least you would have a beer on me!
Greetings from Lisboa, PORTUGAL
Had Maiden played this song on the world slavery tour setlist, it would've displaced TMTM and AH on future tour setlists.
Hey man , any chance you can do covers of reach out and that girl ! Id love to see them , keep rockin!!!
That Girl is one I plan to do for sure! Did you see my video about the B-sides? I play some of those on there 😊
@@LicksOfTheBeast yes i did ! it actually turned me on to thos songs!! Love me some deep tracks , but you opened the flood gates and now i gotta see u perform the full song!!! Up the irons!
@@Nolanvillemaire oh that's so cool! Glad to have had a hand in that 😃🤘
