I remember an interview with Jesper Parnevik from a Swedish golf magazine in 1997 where he talked about playing with Tiger on Sunday of this tournament. Nobody had reached the 18th at Pebble Beach in two all week because of the bad conditions. Until Tiger on Sunday. Tiger's second shot on 18 @5:55 was a 3-wood from 265 yards. Might not sound like much today, but in 1997 with the technology of that time - x-stiff steel shaft and a wound ball - plus damp chilly conditions, slightly into the wind, and at sea-level, it was almost supernatural to carry a 3-wood all the way up on the green from there. Jesper said that "even if I got to hit a driver with the ball teed up 25 yards further ahead it still wouldn't even cross my mind to try to go for the green". He said it was the most surreal experience he's ever had on a golf course to witness that shot in person.
You might recall that the iconic Tin Cup climactic scene involved Kevin Costner going for a par-5 with a 3-wood from even closer than that 265 yards. Suffice to say, even fictional characters weren’t that ambitious in the 90s.
Please do lots of obscure 90s/early tiger vids!! Lots of us are familiar with the more recent stuff but missed the early days other than the most famous highlights!!
I have a friend who is a terrible degenerate gambler. And he has a lot of money. Bad combination huh. Well in 2000 - over the span of 4 tourneys, he lost $120k because he bet the entire field vs Tiger and Tiger won every single one of the tourneys he bet on. Lol. It was 3 majors and another event that was right after one of the majors, I forget what now, its been a long time. But yea, he lost that much betting AGAINST Tiger. Lol. I still bring it up to him every now and then.
Tiger’s swing here is just amazing. Seemingly few to no swing thoughts whatsoever just making it look so easy. The game was coming so natural to him here. You can tell he just felt “it”. Perfect tempo without even trying.
Best iron striker in the history of the game imo, especially from the rough or sand. If he didn't have to re-model his swing due to injuries, surgeries etc he would definitely have 20+ majors. And he's still the GOAT regardless, with no disrespect to Jack.
@@txterbug no, just guessing cause that's when most people think life was at its peak. I don't even disagree with you but it's a bold claim to say life was at its peak as recently as 20 years ago when there's thousands of years of history
Costner was a member of Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. As a caddy in the 90's he always tipped really good, friendly and was a good player, Stalone was the polar opposite.
Tiger’s swing speed at 5.58… I showed it to people who had never seen him in his younger years, they said that even today’s players don’t give that tremendous sensation of speed….
I'll never forget marvelling at how hard he'd swing the club and flush it every time. As a big hitter myself back in the day, i could really appreciate his courage and admire his self belief to be go that hard every time. Most of us are too scared to swing as hard as we can because its too hard to control.
So he just BARELY makes the cut and then still breaks the all-time 72 hole scoring record (for five minutes)? Man oh man, he is special. And of course the guy he loses to is his best friend... and possibly the greatest Pebble Beach player of all time.
Tiger Woods and Kevin Costner, two of the biggest stars of the time playing in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Now you have tour players going to Saudi Arabia to play for blood money. I'm so very saddened at the state of the game these days.
I think it's good that the pga is getting the competition. It will force them to step up. As far as the blood money aspect I'm not buying into that narrative. NBC can condemn that but defend China when people are enslaved as we speak and genocide is taking place. They're athletes making a living looking out for themselves not politicians
Tiger, completely unsatisfied look after the last putt with 2nd place. It’s just who he was in the beginning and for many years after. At 47 and all of the injuries I’m not sure it’s the same. I’m sure he still wants to win, but it may not be taken for granted.
Can someone explain how pro-am 2man teams work? Its not scramble as i see they putting each its own shot, is it the average score or just better score (at any hole counts)?

Really cool story thanks for sharing mate.
You are a very eloquent writer, I enjoyed reading that.
And then he does it from even farther away years later.

Late 90s tiger was as close to perfection playing golf as anyone in history.
2000 was peak Tiger. He could not be stopped.

Life was AT ITS PEAK from 95-2005 those years will go down as the absolute best in history.

he was a scratch golfer back then or single handicaper?

Seeing Kevin Costner makes you wanna watch Tin Cup.
After playing Pebble this year, I appreciate more what Tiger was able to shoot.... especially at the 2000 US Open, he routed the field.
Tiger during the day and Micheal at night. Man those were the days.
Kids today really can't understand. The two greatest of the all times sports greats. Man those Bulls games in the 90s were fkin amazing. . .

the late 90s, what a time
How cool can a golf duo get ? THIS cool.
I didn't know Tin cup played with Woods, this is pretty cool.
Find someone who hugs you like Kevin Costner hugs Tiger Woods.
Kev's got game !
Tiger was unbelievable
There was nothing better than watching Tiger in his prime.
So great. Everything was better back then, in the mid 90s.
I loved Costner’s comment to McCord at the end of the interview. “You’re not on payroll anymore”. BOOM!!
I watched Tin Cup yesterday. Today, this pops up in my feed. Perfect!
Which is creepy to say the least.
Love seeing mcavoy mixing it up with the big cat 🏌️♂️🏌️♂️🎯⛳
Feb 4th 2022 I just watched this - how cool is this Costner playing & well making some PRO shots like amateurs do occasionally
Tiger’s swing speed at 5.58… I showed it to people who had never seen him in his younger years, they said that even today’s players don’t give that tremendous sensation of speed….
In his younger years when he really laid into one... it was a sight to see!
His clubhead speed in his rookie years were insane. He'll probably give Bryson a run for his money if he was born 20 years earlier.
My back hurts just watching that
@@cgasucks he would smoke Bryson. During the US amateur in 1996 he hit a 3 wood that carried 315. That was an x100 shafted 15 degree titleist pt
I don't remember where I read it, but I read that Nike captured his swing speed in the early 2000s and it was 132mph, with a steel shafted driver.
wow surprised by how good costner was.
Kevin Costner used to be America, and it was glorious.

Tin Cup and Tiger 🐅
Kevin should have just used his 7 iron for every shot 🤣
"Hey you ever par in with a 7 iron" 😆
He would never miss
What makes Tiger so different is that he was doing what players are doing now with that old technology he had that is just ridiculous.
Kevin is absolutely killing it! If he didn't act he should of played golf professionally in his life. What a pro! 👍
Watching this, reminds me of how we used to take this man’s game for granted.
Tiger Woods was so lucky to get to play with Kevin Costner
It was just a good pairing, a dream for both probably.
2 of my favorites just ballin. Awesome video.
Kevin got a good swing
For sure. He can definitely play. His putting stroke looks very sketchy but the rest of his game looks very good. Loving the outfit too
