"Bird Song"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
All I know is something like a bird
within her sang
All I know she sang a little while
and then flew on
Tell me all that you know
I'll show you
Snow and rain
If you hear that same sweet song again
will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet
is passing by
Laugh in the sunshine
sing
cry in the dark
fly
through the night
Don't cry now
Don't you cry
Don't you cry
anymore
lalalada
Sleep
in the stars
don't you cry
dry your eyes
on the wind
lalalala
la........
I think Jerry really loved Janis. I remember that scene from Festival Express when they were all jamming on the train. Jerry took Janis's hand and said something like, I love you Janis, loved you from the first day that I met you. Couldn't you imagine if those two would have gotten together. Blows my mind just to think about it. I hope they are all resting in peace.
This is amazing! Do you have a link would love to see it
Jerry loved her as she was. Just herself. Her genius and her folly. But she was certainly no joker in the court. I can't speak for Jerry, but I'm sure he saw her as a beacon. As so many others do. Jerry was not of this regular place either. Praise be! Ain't ya glad?😊🕊🦅
Aw😂🎉❤~😇🤩+😇🤠+😈👻=👨👩👦+🐶 ===😇🐶🤩👻💞💕💞💕💞💕💞✍️✍️✍️🔮🔮🔮😏
Yes.
The thing Jerry loved the most was collaboration with authentic artists.
And Janis was always in the mood for music.
Story is that they did get together and the read that they have at every Grateful Dead show on stage is the same rug that Janice had sex with Jimi Hendrix on and rumored to be with Jerry also that's how they acquired the rug it's a Persian rug
she was my daughters babysitter in the mid 60's, we loved her a lot - still do!
Sweet love to hear some stories. Im linda loved janis. Sad lady
Far out

@@richelleshellibaugh5181 wow! I really love Janis. And you had the great fortune to cross her path.
I don’t know her. But I was a babysitter. My little ones are Everything. I used to take them to concerts.❤️🌺🌷🌹
I woke up with this song playing in a dream - searched youtube and hit play. What a way to start the day
Start it off with Sgt peppers your welcome

God bless Janis Joplin. God bless the Grateful Dead. Some may not like what I just said. But the worry is all in your precious head. 😊🙏🌹
That is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard, what a great band.
I'm listening to this for the first time, ever, and my thoughts are EXACTLY the same.
my mouth dropped open when i read your comment, because not only has Janis played a role in my Iife, I regularly dream of her! I talk with her, and Jerry Garcia because I met them both and it was profoundly important in my experiences of the '60's - Live on Janis. This song is "gravy on top" - it's superb!!!
I'm not even religious, but I'll agree with the sentiment. If there is some sort of divinity? I'd like to believe this is it's favorite song and band. ♥
The magic was all around on this day.
Derek S Don’t have to be religious to believe in a higher power. Organized religion is for sheep, individual spiritual awakening and becoming one with the divine is for Dead Heads ✌🏼❤️⚡️💙
Janis was something special, only a band of friends like the dead who shared the whole scene with her can truly touch on the magic she possessed
I’m back here again luving your masterful creativity. You’ve given us a ROAD TRIP…across America…outer space…and inner space. The images you’ve chosen are a music history lesson. There’s nothing left to “dew” for this 75-year young Deadhead…but, smile, smile, smile…😊
I LOVE This more than words can tell - thank you - I am Forever Grateful 🙃😁☮️💚🎵🎶
All you touch, and all you see, is all your life will ever be.
for Janis and anyone else who showed up when they needed to and then flew on
Wash away all my negative energy and emotions with those smooth melodies. Thank you.
Thank Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. Thank Janis. Thank you, my brothers and sisters. We had a High Time. We traveled So Many Roads. We rested at Terrapin and continued on the Golden Road with a Box of Rain through the Black Muddy Water and into the Attics of my Life, Me and My Uncle always following Uncle Johns Band doing the U.S.Blues and into the Morning Dew beyond those Throwing Stones until we met Saint Stephan, our Love will Not Fade Away. Peace.
Beautiful. Thank you Bro.
..Crossing the Stella Blue in the Cold Rain and Snow on the way to Shakedown Street.
Chase , the way you put this together is amazing. Brings me back. You rock.
Thank you for remembering her, a beautiful woman and great talent. ...009 .
I've turned my girl on the Dead --she's 64 & cool as hell, but has always thought the band was nothin more than 'Truckin' and 'Casey Jones' and the drinking songs so overplayed back in them days when they was all just hunting in VA w/ the radio. Now she's
heard ' Terrapin' and 'Help On The Way" & "Eyes" etc & wants to know more about what they were really all about. I think I did a good thing today, man.
Ah, Janis, we miss you so. Thank you Jerry (we miss you too) and Hunter for writing this beautiful song for our beautiful sister and I think she can hear it whenever it is sung.
Bob weir
the soul lives for ever and so does peace and love.
yeah, I hope so, too! xo
Out of this world. So beautiful. I am truly grateful to the person who introduced me to GD back in the 80’s he is no longer with us sadly. But here we are. I only wish more people could appreciate the beautiful world that could be. With the help of music like this x
Makes me almost cry hearing this. Reminds me of when I was in school. THIS is what the dead should sound like.
Perfect tribute to Janis for today.....she sang for just a little while indeed & oh, did she sing!!
Rip Robert :( 🌹⚡️💀
This so grate for Janis ! I love it so very much ! Thank u ? ❤️🐰🐇🌹🪽🕊️💀☠️⚡️🌙🌎👽🪐🛸🚀💥✨🌟🥀😘🥰😍
Wow I'm back where I began thanks Chase
Beautiful rendition.
Can't thank you enough for promoting it here in a real hifi bitrate; artistry of this calibre deserves no less.
Lovely slideshow, too.
Powerful poetry from terrible tragedy...
Hey, this is Beautiful, & "Grateful"ly appreciated for sure. Thanks
Later, Peace ✌️
Never get's old
You’d be hard pressed to find a Bird Song I don’t like, but this gotta be one of the best of all time for sure 👌🏼
rip Bear, we've never would have flew through the night without you
Happy 74th Birthday Janis...gone but not forgotten...Sleep in the Stars
My comment is that all y;all's comments are wonderful, loving and sweet, Thank us all. We are everywhere
😊 There are some good decent people scattered Everywhere. 👍
Ah Veneta. Sleepy lil town. Pass it weekly on my way to chase steelhead in the coast range. RIP Jerry, Janice, Brent, PigPen, Scully and my beautiful sister Lori.
Don't forget Ramrod, RIP
@@markbreeland6836 And now, Hunter.
Who's this "we," friend?
Some of us are forever young...
...thanks largely to YT, and the efforts of some wonderful archivists...
...and, of course, the Dead themselves, for not just allowing, but fostering, the sharing community that they did and do.
That's their immortality -- and a little part of ours.
Cheers
The Benefit for Springfield Creamery concert in 1972 is my favorite music from the Grateful Dead.
That's why I moved to Oregon.
Smart man.
it always brings me to the places I need to be!!!!
This is the definitive version ! And only Jerry could drop is guitar pick and grab it off the stage floor and never miss a note …like he did at Veneta during this show.
"tell me all that you know , ill show you....snow and rain" .any time that I need to relax unwind or restore my inner balance
I will listen to GD. alot of times starting with this tune.
michael maira me too , this song is so soothing to me
michael maira 7asap00p9
I like to start off with morning dew and then move onto this one
I am doing this right now.
Crazy how I feel every molecule simmer and my mind and body literally...exhale...
It's been easily 90-120 days since, not on purpose, denied this to myself.
🌎🌌
I've probably seen it 25 times but I love keeping that feeling alive in the hearts of all the heads out there. Joe Rossis video is touching too. Love, light and family. Welcome home!
WE LOOOOVE YOOOOU!!!!
I believe in U turns, and we will pick em up, on the return trip! Acts 3:21/Joel 2:3......it was a unique time, and circumstances were exclusive for that era. Could never be duplicated again. So memory and recordings help many move on down the road, on and on and on ☮️
My favorite! The Grateful Dead wrote and sang as perfect and sublime as nature. Beautiful video, beautiful version. Thank you.
What a Beautiful version , . . . Bird Janis Song Pearl
This whole show is amazing, if you haven't experienced it I'd definitely recommend a listen. Thanks for sharing the video.
Chase, thank you so much for this Birdsong, and all of the Deads' songs you have let us see. I read your paper on dead culture. Spot on. Been a deadhead since 1968. Cheers from San Diego.
Mark T
where can I read this paper?

I'm melting.
Grizz Kid if your up at 5 am slowly slipping deeper into a k hole as Jerry's voice leads you to all that he knows I'm gonna have to ask you to fall right onto that like button
Here on August 1st, 2020, I salute you, Jerry.
August 2020, still standing
Going to my first dead show this June and I’m very excited and also a little nervous but more excited! June can’t get here soon enough!
Find a Dark Star Orchestra show. As close to a real show as youre gonna get
I love this always remembered never forgotten. The music shall live on.....
A few tabs of Orange Sunshine. Relax & Enjoy. Keep on jamming.
Wishin 4 the good stuff .long time
My friend.
A few tabs? of the double barrel? I remember doing OS double barrell, a half a hit. For Zappa 12/1/73. A friend came up to school, with a handful. Sold a couple. One kid ate two, and I remember him being held down in a complete and utter fucking deranged bummer because he couldn't handle it. A kid too, no more than 18.
Having just watched The Sunshine Makers last night, brought back memories of that night. Tripped my ass off as I rarely if ever did (and I flew plenty back then). Best acid I ever did, but one didn't take multiple hits of OS. Nope, nada.
Doesn't exactly sound like a recipe for relaxation lol
@@thaddeus2700 I took two for Pink Floyd in June of 75 fairly sure it was the real deal I sometimes still am unable to blink and I’ve never quite picked my jaw up off of the floor .
an amazing tribute to Pearl. ❤✌
Just a strat. A fender. A great tune and a sparkle of brilliance.
I woke up to this song playing from a dream. Mind you, I never really listened to their music but it gave me a inspiration to write a screenplay. Oh I'm 25 years old and listening to "TGD."
Adam Smith awesome! For years I hated the song El Paso. AT least the Deads cover of it. I also didn't really know all the words or notes. I had a dream where a player piano played the entire song with Bobby's voice in the background. When I woke up I knew all the words by heart. It was amazing. Ive loved it ever since.
SickBoy666100 Great story. I'm the guy in the audience who you heard call out for the band to play El Paso ;-), because it tapped into my early childhood when I used to hear it by Marty Robbins on my brother's transistor radio, and because it was a very visual western days romantic tragedy. Girls, guns, and dying for obsessive love.
+Tim X are you still tripping
Not in recent epochs. ;-)
Is there a copy of the screenplay in public somewhere. I've developed a knack of recognizing Dead inspired media, and always find it interesting.
bird song never failed.
Chills and tears... Ty!
NEVER DIES,,,,SOUL, HEART,,,,NEVER GONE LIVES IN YOUR SOUL. THANK YOU. SAVED MY LIVE.
RIP janis. you just took it too far, I was there once. Much love.
+ Definitely agree on this bein one of the all time best Bird Songs played. Fantastic version.
This is thee best version of this song to me. Love it so much
This is one of my favorite dead shows
IMHO, the August 1972 Veneta show was, in it's entirety, one of the best Dead shows ever. The 3 people that voted thumbs down, well, maybe the Dead isn't for you.
'72 is early for a lot of folks. This is waaaay different from the late '80s or early 90's. I agree with you, this show is sweet.
Joe D'Alessandro I think a lot of people listen to the 80's and 90's stuff for the nostalgia and the memories. I mean there is hundreds if not thousands of hours of legendary jams from those years, dont get me wrong, but as some one who was born to late to see the dead play with jerry, and therefore don't have that nostalgia or those memories, I almost exclusively just turn on shows from the 70's. Everybody's got there own opinions but to my ears, I have yet to find any music that touches me like these recordings from the 70's, though I've certainly been searching for that sound ever since ;)
EstimatedProphet92 maybe it will just die out as we old ones die out.i just hope it did a good job for the peace movement.after all you know all it was about was two words;LOVE and PEACE.
If it was something like a bird that sang in Janis, it was most certainly something like an angel that sang in Jerry. What an amazing song, thanks for the great video.
Righteous!! Fantastic pictorial journey with the music! Thanks for posting!
Beautiful Sweet
There now with the Universe
We love you
Love the meter/tempo of this.
Thsnk you to whoever put this video together, beautiful ❤️
WATCH FESTIVAL EXPRESS!! Janis, Dead, Band in Canada
watching it now, thank you!!
This show has such a different sound. You can almost hear the heat.
Happy Birthday, Janis ♡♡♡
Thank you all for the videos! Thank the Dead for the Jams
I was almost four months old when this happened. I often wonder why this generations music speaks to my soul so loudly, but I guess it was because I was so heavily influenced by my older siblings. They, especially my brother, set the standard for me as to what was hip, what was cool, and I had the added benefit of having their album collections when they left home. I also had parents whose music tastes ranged from The Police to the Andrews Sisters, from Thelonious Monk and Pete Fountain to Waylon Jennings to Jimmie Rodgers. I was gifted a family who wore their musical tastes on the cuff of their sleeves. On any given Sunday you would hear Bach, Brubeck, and Davis... My Dad and I had a competition on who would fall asleep first while watching golf and listening to Pet Sounds. My childhood was tailor made for a music fanatic.
Justin Walker I could get down with your family!
I hear you....though I'm a bit older than you. I feel so fortunate to have had a very musical childhood; that was almost all I was "gifted" but that alone gave me coping skills that so many don't have. I honestly don't think that "this generation" had much better music....it's just that the really lousy stuff that came out at the same time gets forgotten and fades away. Its good to still have the good stuff!
Excellent video and tune
love love this! thanks for sharing first time I have heard this
I miss you Marsha, Rest in Love little Gypsy🌕🍀
