Still one of my top 10 Dead songs! I cried the first time I heard it and it still brings tears to my eyes sometimes... one of the most beautiful songs... ahhhhh, those harmonies!!!
I love reading memories like this. For those of us who love them but never saw them, it is so enjoyable to read about the wonderful experiences of others. Thank you and God bless.
I was fortunate to have taken several guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia awaaaaaay back when at Dana Morgan Studios in Palo Alto, California. He taught me some great riffs...and introduced me to such greats as Elizabeth Cotton and Mississippi John Hurt. He and his group, the Dead...went up to San Francisco to play at the Fillmore...and I never saw him again. They became famous!!!!!
Very cool! One time in AZ, it had rained for a week straight... two shows, Sat and Sun... no rain but overcast... big water pit in the center of the field.. when the boys played this song, and right on the word sunshine the clouds broke and sun splashed across the crowd... a truly magical moment I shall never forget. This song has always been special for me since then...
Darren Klein, very excellent call my friend. I have always thought the EXACT same thoughts as you about this song - one of my all-time favorite jams by the boys. They really were hitting on all cylinders for this one. I constantly come back to this jam, in fact using it often to show people unfamiliar w/ the Dead an example of their uniqueness and greatness. Just curious, what's your favorite China Cat jam-wise?
Really amazing how Bobby's guitar, at times, mimics what a piano or keyboardist would play...he actually mentions this in a 2014 or 2015 interview, how he realized that no guitarists were playing that way which helped him develop such a unique approach to rhythm guitar. It's amazing how if you take out his guitar track, how much this changed the feel of the song. Of course all members made the Dead what it was, but I'd venture to say that Bobby was the backbone of the Dead.
Pretty sure I remember Bobby Ace talking about how McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane's dynamic greatly influenced his rhythm playing. How he heard the interplay between the piano and sax and thought to transpose that between guitarists in a rock n roll band. Could be wrong.
I agree that no one plays like Bob Weir and he complimented Garcia so beautifully. Crosby said at one time he wanted to be invited into the Dead but also said there was no way he could do it as well as Bob. Coming from another exceptional rhythm player I thought that said a lot.
Bobby was the heart, Jerry was the soul, Phil was the brains, Billy was the backbone, Mickey was the muscle, Keith was the piano player and Donna was the girl (lol and I'm a huge fan of the Godchauxs). Later on Brent became the Soul, Bobby became the Nuts and Jerry became the Jerry.
Compton Terrace Amphitheater, Tempe AZ....12/06/92. Set one, first song. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was peaking on shrooms when the sun hit my face during Here Comes Sunshine. I`ll never forget it.
This is a little past the time I was conceived, yet this is as timeless a piece as any. Great vid and powerful version, listening, chomping at the bit for the rain to stop and to get back outside in the sunshine.
The boys were great that way, weren't they? Fire on the Mountain Ventura 1985... I'll never forget looks like rain the next day as the boys sang and the clouds rolled in and misted our sun-drenched dancing bodies.
My first-born's first show, first song, first set, Cal Expo 6/94... i can still see his long golden hair trailing behind as he twirled in his tie dye - it was a very hot show!
thats an awesome story! I just had a pretty magic experience with this song. i ordered tix for the bobby/bruce show in oakland from gdtstoo, and the letter they came in had the lyrics to to this song ' good to know you got shoes to wear' so i started listening to the song, then on the same trip to Cali, i went to a Dark Star show and dosed, my first dose at a dead show, and when they played this and said that line jeff looked right into my eyes and nodded at me. If thats not a sign, idk what is
Speaking of that Compton Terrace show in '92, do y'all remember that sunset with the sun setting right behind the stage with that gorgeous purple, orange, and gold Arizona sky? What a show!
The "happening" is pretty well timed to when the song starts really "happening." Very well done and a great selection from the available Here Comes Sunshines!
I saw the Dead do this at the Tempe, AZ ballpark in November '73, just after it was released. It was a cool, cloudy day, but just as the clouds broke just before sundown, they broke into this song. Typical Dead magic!
They were and still are an international treasure. Sorry my kids and grand kids will never get to see them live. Glad I got to though. ;) :) :) :) VERY GLAD. Cant help but notice that it sounds like they want to break into I know you rider.
If you like this version try also Here Comes Sunshine from 1973-04-02 at Boston Garden. Really nice high quality sweet jams! (Well, until minute 14 or so)
Great version no doubt but check out the one just 3 weeks before this, 11-30-73 Boston. Dicks Pick 14. My favorite HCS and I'll put the Eyes from that show against any the Dead ever played too.
At the beginning of the jam, just before the 3:00 mark, notice how they slowly build the jam...whereas with Dead & Co and John Mayer--don't get me wrong, Dead & Co are great--but Mayer just busts right into full tilt mode. I don't know why they miss this obvious building up of the jam..
I don't know my is 12/6/73 in Cleveland only problem strong recording till last 3 minutes then poor audio, this is killer version too as was Pauley this month too
This rendition of this song, note by note, will be forever ingrained into my memory.
🤍
I love that about certain tapes I had
This version takes me to places I don't want to come back from
I know exactly you're talking about

@@BrianForTheWinwe see them everywhere. Everywhere we go, there's Jerry in everything..
Top 5 for me. So badass. Why hold out for more people
What's my other 4 ? Tough but birdsong. Help. Morning Dew. Loser

That's really cool 🎉 Thanks!
This is the worlds best cure for anxiety.
Unless you covering it bahaha o my life
Hell yeah. Whenever I need to feel grounded
Yes.
Indeed!
You got that right 👍
One of my favorites and digg this version and Phil’s bass explorations. Nice job on the time lapse video…love it!! So cool.
In my opinion, Wake of the Flood is the most important album. Opened the door to a more jazzy and relaxed approach to the live jam.
I think that WOTF is a generally underrated GD album
Wake of the Flood and Anthem of the Sun are their best albums, gotta disagree with Jerry although I do love Mars Hotel etc.
I couldn’t agree more 73 dead is my go to.
WOTF happens to carry my favorite all time studio cut, "Weather Report Suite"
@looseele Bobby's solo Acustic is where it's at though..
My new favorite song like a kid in a candy store...40yrs removed...wow what a gem to find
This is one of my favorites by far! So beautiful to say the least! My heart is warmed by the sunshine that this produces.
Very cool! Everyone knows that this is the best Sunshine... but I'd venture to say that this may be the best Dead jam, period.
My favorite versions of songs tend to shift around over time...but this has always been my favorite Sunshine.

Not gonna argue this
06 26 74 is the best China cat man.
James James that’s awesome.
This is a very very very good Sunshine. Holy smokes. So much colour. It's like a whole planet of love.
It’s bringing my house down! Free hugs...for everyone!

Listening to dead and company, this just doesn't ring true at all.
his rhythm and inverted chords are definitely unique
Compton Terrace Amphitheater, Tempe AZ....12/06/92. Set one, first song. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was peaking on shrooms when the sun hit my face
during Here Comes Sunshine. I`ll never forget it.
Best moment is to peak when Jerry peaks hahaha the whole band peaks a lot hahaha
Isn't crazy how every Dead song takes you back to a specific concert? I'll never forget the first time I ever heard this song out in Calif.
I think it was 1971.
2/9/73 at Stanford, Roscoe Maples Pavilion
The gathering was the center of focus back then- Miraculous crowds! And the art lives on.
This is the only song my cat will come into my office when I'm playing - only this version. Cats are the quintessential best judges of character.
A few real nice WOW moments here... thanks Jerry, thanks boys. Thank God for The Grateful Dead
Awesome! Always loved this song & loved the fact they brought it back into the line-up. Actually the slow expanded sunrise is very cool!
This made my day. Great job.
Keep that mother rollin', one more time....
Favorite version of this song, thank you!
The song was both written and first played in 1973. If you think you heard in 71, you musta been on some really really good shit.
...or time traveling.
Guess i had that date wrong. Thanks for correction. Jerrye.
or stupid 😂
Just superb..what a perfect visual..for a perfect song...
When the vocal harmonies kick in, who can say ... they kick! Always 🎉❤
This is the best 14 minutes in music history
This is a little past the time I was conceived, yet this is as timeless a piece as any. Great vid and powerful version, listening, chomping at the bit for the rain to stop and to get back outside in the sunshine.
Wow is this an incredible version.
The boys were great that way, weren't they? Fire on the Mountain Ventura 1985... I'll never forget looks like rain the next day as the boys sang and the clouds rolled in and misted our sun-drenched dancing bodies.
maybe its me, but didyouevernotice how jerry seems to "wake up" sometimes and then go "back to sleep" only to wake up again....a true force of nature.
😘 true classic,. incredibly creative...dope visual.... before my time but the prophecy fulfilled I AM.... sunshine, infinite gratitude!
My first-born's first show, first song, first set, Cal Expo 6/94... i can still see his long golden hair trailing behind as he twirled in his tie dye - it was a very hot show!
OMG I was at CalExpo then ! lived in Sac! Thx 🎉
Such a nice stress reliever. The boys are right on it and the video is phenomenal!

I love that I get to see it every day here in PHX it's truly a beautiful world we live in
I love this song
This is such a great HCS. However, I like Dane County's 2-15-73 even more...
Me too. Had that tape because it was the closest to the day of my birth that they played. That's a great show; I used to know it well.
They were on a roll that winter.
So good to hear after Hurricane Ida. Really the Wake of the Flood.
Great version.
Wonderful, thank you.
now that's music wonderful. ....

My God! Reminds me of walking around looking for mushrooms in the early morning dew.
Thank you for this. Really freaking good!
I saw D and C at shorleline 6/14 I was crying when they played this song.

Beep beep! A little dancing in the streets! Get out the way. Stephen's dancing with his rose, in the street.
Great version no doubt but check out the one just 3 weeks before this, 11-30-73 Boston. Dicks Pick 14. My favorite HCS and I'll put the Eyes from that show against any the Dead ever played too.
Good stuff...
The sunshine from Barton Hall has this one by a nostril
Yes indeed
I think this is actually the version on Dicks Picks vol. 1, am I right? Love it.
Dylan Eichenberg yup. what a great version.
Yeah, this is DP1... there's a reason that Dick chose this as the first tune on the first collection...
FLORIDA IS GLAD FOR THE SUNSHINE
I REMEMBER
I love you mommy, Concetta Sgro !
Nice...

Yes Jerry found greatness in the subtle❤️
I don't know my is 12/6/73 in Cleveland only problem strong recording till last 3 minutes then poor audio, this is killer version too as was Pauley this month too
Why they ever shelved this song is a head scratcher
Really id
