Having survived sexual abuse myself, I think his response to her telling her traumatic experience is the best response a survivor can receive: He validates her pain but does not pity her. Pity towards a survivor is like confirming that we are broken. Simply showing love instead of pity is telling the survivor that what happened did not change who we are. I wish every survivor have a Jang Hyun in their life.
This is what I needed from my mother during my rape at 13, instead of being blamed for it,... And a family member sexually abused me at 5 and she never believed it until that person confessed 3 years ago (I am 32 now) and still, she was letting that person come into our home... Saying I needed to forgive... I also hope people going through this can have someone like this character in their lives... I also hope you are healing every day and knowing it wasn't your fault, and you're not broken. I send you love and light.

Janghyun raised the standard so high. I have watched many kdramas but his character is just different. Among all the scences, this one is my favourite. Writer-nim gave his all when he wrote JangHyun's character, he is like i will put all the imagination there is and alas he created a "perfect" one. Ofc, Namgoong gave justice to the role and so is Eunjin as Gilchae
Kdramas have come long way from toxic boyfriend tropes to real functional men. Jang Hyun, Yu Ji Hyuk (Marry my husband), and many more new good kdrama male leads are raising the standards.

I was really engrossed in the movie, and remembering that all the people that Gil Chae worked hard to return to (her sister and father) that kept questioning whether she really haven’t been touch by any ‘barbarians’ plus the society that kept criticising and said that women should kill themselves if their chastity aren’t kept. when he said his line, i just couldnt held my tears, it felt like i too was consoled by Jang Hyun words. after all the criticisms , and finally someone that acknowledges her pain ❤❤❤❤
I especially love how subtle both actors are in this scene. Even before Gil-chae explicitly says what happened, Jang-hyun reads her eyes and tells her she can tell him but only if she wants to. 1:02 He already knows she went through some trauma but he’s trying to spare her from more so he leaves it up to her to decide whether to tell him or not. Both actors did a fantastic job!!! 👏👏👏I cried so much during this scene. Jang-Hyun is tender and loving. And Gil-chae conveys so much emotion with just her eyes. It’s all too beautiful.

He professes his love for his beloved Gil Chae, which has been unshakeable from the first time they met. He wants only her and no one else. Gil Chae has succumbed to Jang Hyun affections no matter how she tries to push him away. This was a beautiful scene involving the lead characters.

This part really made me realize how much I had downplayed Gil Chae’s traumas. That must have been so hard specially since even her own father and sister do not cherish her past this stupid belief that the victims should kill themselves. I found myself wishing to hug her. How sad that somewhere out there someone might actually relate to her pain…

How can someone love so hard? No matter how I think about it, I don't think a human like him would exist. At least not in this generation. Everyone would want to be loved by someone like him but at the same time could not give the kind of love that Jang Hyeon have. Jang Hyeon-ah, did you just f*ucked-up with my entire being now? Haha i think you triggered something in me. My mind is so messed up right now because of the principles of a human who does not even exist.
So is she really taken advantage of by the foreign intruder? And NO i won't talk about her chastity. what i want to talk about is; since there was no hint of such a thing happened most people thought she just stay silent about it because no one not even her own blood family "trust" her and instead made a fuss about it. Even when she tell JH i thought she said it just to see his reaction/make him go away cuz she kinda expected his reaction to be like everyone else.. just like when JH said he hurt his leg everyone thought it was a fun lie but he actually looks painful afterward
I think there were plenty of hints that something happened. The fact she was thrown in the room with all those men. She later is thrown back in the jail cell bc she bite the guy’s ear off? You have to think that she had to have been awfully close to the man for something like that to happen. And unlikely that in this period such an incident the would have just meant she fought off a bunch of men. The more realistic scenario is she would have been killed for fighting back. I don’t think she was trying to scare Jang Hyun off. She cares for him and wanted to be honest with him about what type of scrutiny he would endure if he was with her. Throughout this entire episode there were various scenes where townsfolk and other people judged her for what she endured. I’m certain that eventually wore her down. No matter how much she tried to hide her own grief and ignore her pain, she finally felt she could be honest with Jang Hyun and confide in him.
i think she really was. I mean, I know she ripped off that intruder ear, but before it happens she spent hours with him, so I believe it’s very unlikely that anything happened..
@@BerryTerry2014 i see.. that's a very interesting point.. the ear bite i thought happened when he tried to get close to her and therefore nothing happened yet (y'know like how she hurt herself just so she won't be presented to the Qing's Emperor or like what happened to Jongjong when Gujam saved her). And the way she tells him about it makes me think she does want to see if Janghyun would've had the same reaction like Gu Wonmu or her family, and she caught off guard by his answer it's clearly shown on her face the shock the relieve the pain all of it (damn Ahn Eunjin is really great actress to able to convey those emotions all at once), and that those word is what she needed & wanted to hear the most..
@@vanada116 I wondered if she had fought off the guy too…and my conclusion is she did fight but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his way with her before tossing her back. (I see it almost like a horrible “let me get my money’s worth but also give me a partial refund because she bit my ear.” :/) I totally agree that she wanted to see how Jang-hyun would react because poor girl has so far been socially ostracized by everyone! IF he did reject her, it wouldn’t have been unexpected culturally. In this era women were expected to take their lives rather than bring shame upon their families. It’s why she leaves her family whom she loves so much (she doesn’t want to put them through that communal shame). I think the writers purposely kept things vague about what happened to keep us guessing but Gil-chae’s tears to me show she’s finally able to confront her trauma with Jang-hyun because it was *safe* for her to do so. In another comment I wrote how I love that he told her she didn’t need to tell him what happened in Qing (about the 1 min mark) but she can if she wants to. To me, he was letting her know she was in a safe space to be honest and not talk about it if it was too painful because he didn’t care either way. In a subtle way, he also let her know if she did talk, she did not need to put up the brave face she had shown everyone else. I DO, however, wish the writer had given us more glimpses into her inner monologue about this before this episode. But, I think that everything has been going so fast she probably didn’t even want to think about what happened herself. Who would? As to the details of what *exactly* happened with the barbarians…I think that’s irrelevant at this point because it all amounted to horrible trauma and I don’t think more details are needed to validate that. Plus, this is a broadcast drama in Korea so there are limits to what they can show/discuss.
When she was sold the second time, (after she was kicked out of the palace) she was thrown in a den of 4-5 men. She endured it for the whole night until she managed to smash her slaver in the head and she was thrown back again at the slave market. So they didn't show the graphic voilence but that one night must have been way more horrifying then we could imagine. And moreover, there were times when she let that creepy man grope her for a bribe. She endured a lot of traumas but kudos to her, she did not let anything break her. She had a very progressive mindset for her era which is why Jang Hyun was so attracted to her. Any other woman (for example her best friend) would have considered this as a taint but Gil Chae never saw it like that. She was assaulted several times but she knew it was not her fault.

O final desta série não é ruim, mas este momento vale mais que o final. Melhor momento da série! O momento em que ela conta sobre o abuso sofrido e que ele a abraça, valida a dor dela e diz pra ela que isso não muda o que ela é e nem o quanto ela é importante pra ele. Nos dias atuais ainda existe o costume de culpar a própria vítima de abuso sexual pela violência sofrida. Toda pessoa que passou por essa experiência traumática merece esse tipo de acolhimento não é? Quem escreveu esse roteiro teve muita delicadeza ao escrever essa cena. Fiquei encantada com o momento!

So is she really taken advantage of by the foreign intruder? And NO i won't talk about her chastity. what i want to talk about is; since there was no hint of such a thing happened most people thought she just stay silent about it because no one not even her own blood family "trust" her and instead made a fuss about it. Even when she tell JH i thought she said it just to see his reaction/make him go away cuz she kinda expected his reaction to be like everyone else.. just like when JH said he hurt his leg everyone thought it was a fun lie but he actually looks painful afterward
I think there were plenty of hints that something happened. The fact she was thrown in the room with all those men. She later is thrown back in the jail cell bc she bite the guy’s ear off? You have to think that she had to have been awfully close to the man for something like that to happen. And unlikely that in this period such an incident the would have just meant she fought off a bunch of men. The more realistic scenario is she would have been killed for fighting back. I don’t think she was trying to scare Jang Hyun off. She cares for him and wanted to be honest with him about what type of scrutiny he would endure if he was with her. Throughout this entire episode there were various scenes where townsfolk and other people judged her for what she endured. I’m certain that eventually wore her down. No matter how much she tried to hide her own grief and ignore her pain, she finally felt she could be honest with Jang Hyun and confide in him.
i think she really was. I mean, I know she ripped off that intruder ear, but before it happens she spent hours with him, so I believe it’s very unlikely that anything happened..
@@BerryTerry2014 i see.. that's a very interesting point.. the ear bite i thought happened when he tried to get close to her and therefore nothing happened yet (y'know like how she hurt herself just so she won't be presented to the Qing's Emperor or like what happened to Jongjong when Gujam saved her). And the way she tells him about it makes me think she does want to see if Janghyun would've had the same reaction like Gu Wonmu or her family, and she caught off guard by his answer it's clearly shown on her face the shock the relieve the pain all of it (damn Ahn Eunjin is really great actress to able to convey those emotions all at once), and that those word is what she needed & wanted to hear the most..
@@vanada116 I wondered if she had fought off the guy too…and my conclusion is she did fight but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his way with her before tossing her back. (I see it almost like a horrible “let me get my money’s worth but also give me a partial refund because she bit my ear.” :/)
I totally agree that she wanted to see how Jang-hyun would react because poor girl has so far been socially ostracized by everyone! IF he did reject her, it wouldn’t have been unexpected culturally. In this era women were expected to take their lives rather than bring shame upon their families. It’s why she leaves her family whom she loves so much (she doesn’t want to put them through that communal shame).
I think the writers purposely kept things vague about what happened to keep us guessing but Gil-chae’s tears to me show she’s finally able to confront her trauma with Jang-hyun because it was *safe* for her to do so.
In another comment I wrote how I love that he told her she didn’t need to tell him what happened in Qing (about the 1 min mark) but she can if she wants to. To me, he was letting her know she was in a safe space to be honest and not talk about it if it was too painful because he didn’t care either way. In a subtle way, he also let her know if she did talk, she did not need to put up the brave face she had shown everyone else.
I DO, however, wish the writer had given us more glimpses into her inner monologue about this before this episode. But, I think that everything has been going so fast she probably didn’t even want to think about what happened herself. Who would?
As to the details of what *exactly* happened with the barbarians…I think that’s irrelevant at this point because it all amounted to horrible trauma and I don’t think more details are needed to validate that. Plus, this is a broadcast drama in Korea so there are limits to what they can show/discuss.
When she was sold the second time, (after she was kicked out of the palace) she was thrown in a den of 4-5 men. She endured it for the whole night until she managed to smash her slaver in the head and she was thrown back again at the slave market. So they didn't show the graphic voilence but that one night must have been way more horrifying then we could imagine. And moreover, there were times when she let that creepy man grope her for a bribe. She endured a lot of traumas but kudos to her, she did not let anything break her. She had a very progressive mindset for her era which is why Jang Hyun was so attracted to her. Any other woman (for example her best friend) would have considered this as a taint but Gil Chae never saw it like that. She was assaulted several times but she knew it was not her fault.
