The fact that someone found this and that it exists is amazing. Considering this is an obscure doujin game that wasn't very popular, finding something like this makes me wonder what other game secrets people never found out about.
today is the 20th anniversary and the community is bigger than ever thanks to fangames. recommend you play the game now if you haven't, it's on steam. (hope you reply) :)
I'm not a troper, but TV tropes brought me here. Speaking of TV Tropes, I'm sure I was meant to be doing something....oh yeah homework. After this article...
The amount of time it took to exhaust every possible combination of commands to get this result is unfathomable. What kind of sick person would torture their players like this? :
I still can't understand... 1. This game was created thinking a lot about every detail to create some kind of background story for Madotsuki that can only be deduced little by little with theories based on every scenario and npc on the game, which means is one of the most complex games ever made. or 2. This game was created absolutely with every bizarre thing the author could find for RPG maker despite the meaning of it all and he just wanted to make a creepy weird game.
What does the word "Uboa" mean. I've lurked a bit and learned that the game is about a Hikikomori that dreams weird dreams, but what does Uboa symbolize. Also, in that event, who is the girl she is killing? A neighbor, or rival. I'm treating this game like a Lynch film...
@Mysticsloth The game works with probabilities. The chance to see uboa upon flicking the light-switch is 1/64. So some of the players ( who played the game blind, meaning without prior knowledge ) got scared and went to the ceiling, which is whole point of uboa ( except for the theories ). To see all of the events in-game, you have to spend time with it ( on uboachan..) and if you wish you can go and see all of the events if you missed them.
@paddymoep "Isn't it good for a game to spawn this many theories?" Of course it is. All I was objecting to was "No one except for Kikiyama knows," because Kikiyama DOESN'T know, and has stated as much. It's like finding shapes in fire or clouds, nobody put anything there on purpose, but your mind inserts meaning. If that makes any sense. Basically what I'm saying is that you are correct in every way that's important.
Do you get anything from the meeting with uboa? I mean, using any item on it, does anything else happen? Or it is there, hidden like that, just to make you shit bricks? If the last, damn, he really fullfilled his purpose x_x
@HazenKain As poorly translated from Kikiyamas website when talking about the games features... "It is a game to walk around the world of (setting) in the dream of a very dark atmosphere. There aren't a story in particular and the purpose. It is a game only as for walking about."
What exactly is the reasoning behind the person putting on a cat costume after encountering a disembodied head (as big as themself, no less) while in a locked room?
Nothing can kill you ingame. The only things that may kill you are some sudden nightmares that will wake you up in a cold sweat , or you may be sent to an unknown plce that is most of the time inescapable. Usuallt, that's where the Toriningen and Uboa send you to.
@Mysticsloth Trust me, it's worth a lot for some people - even if saw the uboa event on youtube, they still go to poniko's house just to see for themselves. i did, too. but uboa was the reason i stumbled upon yume nikki, anyway. and i wouldn't say " stupid face ", as it holds meaning and is basically this game's mascot.
What's better is that it is actually chance-based. So it could could very well happen the first time you do it. And yes, pinching yourself is the only way to escape. That or the hand.
so if get this : a girl is dreaming that another girl is monster and she stabs the girl and leaves her in the dark until monster comes out then she runs away from it until she wakes up in her own bed and she realizes that she left the tv was on and turns it off and go out side.
That's the troubling thing... Information can be found all over. It even has its own wiki. Yes, a Yume Nikki Wiki. The game itself though? You're lucky if you find a link to download it, and if you DO download it, it won't open unless you do some kind of satanic voodoo unlocking spell on it or something. I've had the game for like 5 months and I STILL can't get it open.
Anyone, correct me if I'm wrong-- I hear people saying that 'uboa' is portrayed as a death scream in some animations/comics/whatever or something, but I'm not completely sure?
It's a sandbox game in its simplest form: You wander around and explore. There's no dialogue, the enemies are more of a bother than anything else since they can't kill you, and there's nothing at all to do except collect 2 dozen abilities and see the ending. It's not meant to be a standard RPG, a fun RPG, or even an RPG at all, really. It's meant to be a creep-you-the-fuck-out-G.
@NorthAnticipated yes sure but - it takes all the efford just to see this? i'm a hobby game designer myself but i don't get the point in this, please explain if you can - what's the fun in making the same move a few hundred times ( light off, go outside, go inside) over and over for 3 minutes and then to see a stupid face?
@MissReige Because I played it blind, got pissed at the blonde haired girl for not paying attention to me and flicked the lights on and off repeatedly and then she turned into that Uboa thing. I didn't even know what it was or why it happened until i looked online later.
@SAKalleria Which is completely intentional. For starters, notice the similarity of Takofuusen and Masada's space ship. Some things are hints, the rest is open for theory. Take the number world. Why does it have such ridiculously disturbing music? Must be because Madotsuki hates math. Also, saying it has no meaning at all is the same as making up theories like all others do. In YN beta, you got the fat effect from a mirror. Isn't it good for a game to spawn this many theories?
I'm don't think so... I think people learned the name from the game's files, one simply being called "uboa", and people assumed that that was its name, along with Torinigen, Kyukyu, Ponika, and so on.
@paddymoep Kikiyama has no idea what this game means because it was never meant to have a single meaning, it was just a strange game made for the sake of being strange. Whatever interpretation drawn from it (i.e. yours) is as correct as any. Also , you don't need to kill Poniko to make Uboa show up.
@Mysticsloth You noticed this game features no text or any scripture for that matter? No one except for Kikiyama knows. I personally believe he is Madotsukis father. When he's home, he locks the door, yells at madotsuki, therefore the AAAAAAAAAA, even madotsuki even so much as touches him he will knock her out, causing her to vomit blood, as represented by the "vomiting god" that slightly looks like zoroark.. in uboa's semen land. Killing Poniko(mother) will also cause him to show up,
@BronzeAnkh it's not scary anymore because everybody knows about it. But if you were to play the game and had no idea this would randomly happen to you it could surprise you.
@omegagiga43 it's name is Uboa. It's from a Japanese pc freeware game called "Yume Nikki". Uboa has a 1/64 chance of appearing when you turn off that light. Yume Nikkivis an awesome game, I would definitely check it out if I were you. Oh and dontnlook up the ending, you really don't want an ending like that spoiled...
The fact that someone found this and that it exists is amazing. Considering this is an obscure doujin game that wasn't very popular, finding something like this makes me wonder what other game secrets people never found out about.

Uboa is the sound of a scream in japan. Kind of like "Augh".
In other words, Uboa is called Scream.
I'm not a troper, but TV tropes brought me here. Speaking of TV Tropes, I'm sure I was meant to be doing something....oh yeah homework. After this article...

"...I'm just going to sit out here...and pretend that whole incident never happened..."
In case SOME people are impatient, the real video starts at 3:20
I NEVER KNEW GIYGAS HAD A SIBLING
What does the word "Uboa" mean. I've lurked a bit and learned that the game is about a Hikikomori that dreams weird dreams, but what does Uboa symbolize. Also, in that event, who is the girl she is killing? A neighbor, or rival.
I'm treating this game like a Lynch film...
If I hadn't seen the "surprise" coming a mile away, it would have been freakier.
@Mysticsloth The game works with probabilities. The chance to see uboa upon flicking the light-switch is 1/64. So some of the players ( who played the game blind, meaning without prior knowledge ) got scared and went to the ceiling, which is whole point of uboa ( except for the theories ).

Although it seems he got the result corresponding to the first hypothesis for the 95% of the people that played the game.
@paddymoep "Isn't it good for a game to spawn this many theories?" Of course it is. Why did you stab me Madotsuki? :(
You still didn't answer the question tho.
+Poniko “Ponytail Girl” ポニ子 i sub scribe
Because of the manga
That feel when you can finally watch this without cringing when he appears.
I think there's a large chance that it was pretty much #2, but some of the theories work so well that it might as well be #1 either way.
I finally got this event after A LOT of tries
I actually started playing it and I see that now. It's very interesting.
one of the oldest yn videos I believe?
the oldest
"Oh hey im the Uboa universe" *ding* *ding* LOOOL
already my fav version of this XD
Jesus, I did this in the game knowing EXACTLY what was going to happen, and I still shat bricks. D:
Do you get anything from the meeting with uboa?
I mean, using any item on it, does anything else happen? Or it is there, hidden like that, just to make you shit bricks?
If the last, damn, he really fullfilled his purpose x_x
did anyone else notice that when uboa comes out, the wardobe, window and picture frame all look like they have faces?
AH thank you! I've wanted to know where he got his name from forever.
UBOA RULES!!! LOVE THIS GAME!!!
If I were just 2(or more) years younger and played this game, That thing would have given me trauma.
Actually, it happens at a certain rather low percentage. It's mostly meant as a secret. It only took me some 30 seconds to get it working though.
@HazenKain
As poorly translated from Kikiyamas website when talking about the games features...
"It is a game to walk around the world of (setting) in the dream of a very dark atmosphere. There aren't a story in particular and the purpose. It is a game only as for walking about."
Aaaugh!!! Thanks to this video, I've now become frightened of switching off the lights in my house.
to continue to a new part of the game you must repeat a task over 300 times.
omfg this part still gives me the chills
What exactly is the reasoning behind the person putting on a cat costume after encountering a disembodied head (as big as themself, no less) while in a locked room?
He transports you to a weird painting-like place with black and white and red and what is supposed to be blood I guess.
@HazenKain I think its more like people find meaning in chaos rather then actual meaning.
Oh hey you guys are on TVTropers too? I followed the link.
Nothing can kill you ingame. The only things that may kill you are some sudden nightmares that will wake you up in a cold sweat , or you may be sent to an unknown plce that is most of the time inescapable. Usuallt, that's where the Toriningen and Uboa send you to.

feels good man
Great, I'm gonna have nightmares about this thing. The ambient noise it makes during the time he is there doesn't help either ... D:
so if get this : a girl is dreaming that another girl is monster and she stabs the girl and leaves her in the dark until monster comes out then she runs away from it until she wakes up in her own bed and she realizes that she left the tv was on and turns it off and go out side.

How did you get the Japanese text to appear correctly in this game?
Anyone, correct me if I'm wrong-- I hear people saying that 'uboa' is portrayed as a death scream in some animations/comics/whatever or something, but I'm not completely sure?
@Vakarianify Its called Yume nikki
And never play it with your lights off

So THAT's what Uboa is! I never knew that :o
One in 64. When you enter, it generates a number from 0 to 63. If the number is 0 when you flip the switch, Uboa.
This happened on my second try. I knew it was coming, but I nearly died from fear just looking at it. D:
@Animewacher121 Yume Nikki, and what's happening is that the girl is exploring her dream world which has suddenly transformed into a nightmare
@SAKalleria Where did Kikiyama state this? I would like to know why he/she shattered the whole theory board of uboachan.net at once.
Is there a story behind Uboa or anything? I'm curious.
Uboa made me shit a fucking brick wall the first time. I was just told to "do it, go on" - had no idea of what to expect. Now I love Uboa. ;D
@MissReige I can't record on my pc, I would have recorded originally if I thought everyone would call me a liar. All I can say is go do it yourself :P
Perhaps I should make an edit with Giygas' theme playing in the background. I will get to it as soon as i'm done taking out the bricks I shat.
If that was you on the phone and you on the bus, than who was flickering the lights?
@paddymoep ...so what meaning does it hold exactly?
Anybody notice that the Category is "Education"?
Yume Nikki.
One of the creepiest games I've ever played
@MissReige Because I played it blind, got pissed at the blonde haired girl for not paying attention to me and flicked the lights on and off repeatedly and then she turned into that Uboa thing. I didn't even know what it was or why it happened until i looked online later.
This has made me scared to play this game. :'(
Uboa: STOP MESSIN' WITH THE LIIIIGHTS!!!
Where is it possible to find this?
I am so glad I got this in like five tries because my DOWN KEY WAS NOT WORKING
@SAKalleria Which is completely intentional. For starters, notice the similarity of Takofuusen and Masada's space ship. Some things are hints, the rest is open for theory.
Take the number world. Why does it have such ridiculously disturbing music?
Must be because Madotsuki hates math.

Yeah!! High five, fellow troper!! =D
2:39 made me lol
I have no idea what I'm doing in this game.
this game is a dream dosnt rly have to make sense just there to creep/make ppl jump
uboa dosnt mean anything just a name
the girl is poniko
I'm don't think so... I think people learned the name from the game's files, one simply being called "uboa", and people assumed that that was its name, along with Torinigen, Kyukyu, Ponika, and so on.
Uboa's noises sound like vevuzelas.
What the hell was that?
Going into a room 80 times to be found by Scream's rejected mask? Can someone explain what's going on?
It's a random event. (1/64 chance to... "trigger" it)
What about Seccom Masada-sensei (the piano dude)? .-.
4:13 "Didn't I already pass this head before?"
i copied the title and then i deleted some of the characters, pasted the title again, and it translated into "Dream journal of meat texture"
@Mysticsloth You noticed this game features no text or any scripture for that matter?

This would even give Giygas nightmares!
@BronzeAnkh it's not scary anymore because everybody knows about it.
But if you were to play the game and had no idea this would randomly happen to you it could surprise you.
That lights-off music is like a fucking ticking time bomb...
Odd.
Very!
@@ishros My opinion has not changed in 16 years and this vindication was worth the wait.
@@Grobda I’ll be back in 2040 to check in on you. ☺️
What's the game name?
coulda just turned the lights on and off repeatedly...
leave the room, go back in, turn off lights, leave room, go back in, turn off lights...
Yeah. It should be under google's first results for 'yume nikki'.
Thank you! I take it you're a fellow Troper? =)
I don't see what's so scary.
Uboa's kinda cuuuute :(
I'd feel pretty uneasy if it screamed at me with a reeeally distorted face, though.
Umm What Game Is This?
@krackothunder Yumei Nikki , its a game made on rpg maker 2003
I'd like to think that acid could do better than that.
@omegagiga43 it's name is Uboa. It's from a Japanese pc freeware game called "Yume Nikki". Uboa has a 1/64 chance of appearing when you turn off that light. Is it me or after you talk with Uboa, he looks like a sad trollface?
1 in 64 chance? When I played he appeared the second time I turned the switch.
Oh...this game...Now i remeber it all
BTW!! Your username totally rocks. =^^=
So there's no meaning to the name?
That's why it can be so unexpected.
wtf with this sadistic, nervous and rare asiatics
