check out charlesberthoud one word, on youtube, he plays the bass like nobody else ive seen on all levels :D I actually came here cause someone who owns a Rickenbacker 4001 wanted him to play one lol
Really glad Greg is here to do Thumpin' Thursdays - we've really needed a genuine, bad ass bass player. Agnesi would always make fun of bass guitars, and Lemmo is an amazing guitarist - but Greg fills the niche those of us who love bass, have been looking for. Spot on.
Brought my 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 Bass in Feb 1974. Still have it to this day, July 11, 2024. 2-3 small nicks on the head stock, and one small one on the back of the body. Not Bad considering I had it with me while traveling across 4 different continents and back home. Love the sound when using flat wounds.
I had one and sold it … that sound is unmistakable. It’s true that it’s a guitar player bass very fuzzy sounding and great for playing chord style thumps.
I feel that Everytime I pick up a RIC 4001 that my brain involuntary starts playing the opening riff of Dragonaut by SLEEP! It’s the ultimate riff to get the idea of that low round sound that you are talking about. I like how you compared it to having almost a piano low string with that semi percussive feel!! Well put! Oh the riff i was speaking about is also a great bell wether for testing a bass wah pedal. 4001 with Wah equals untouchable Badassery!!! Great video and a absolute beautiful example of the 4001.
Lemmy is for sure my Rickenbacker guy. Got myself a Rickenbacker 4003 from around 2015 i think. Thinking about slinging in a humbucker pickup in the bridge to see what happens.
@@gregcoates4281 Wow!!! Thank you Greg so very much for your reply & the great demo 👍 I'm familiar with Scott's solo album "TunnelVision Brilliance" - his creative musical genius really shines through that LP. Has he released any other solo albums since that one?
My 1957 Ricky bass is prestereo but I used to chain two Plush amp stacks when we played for a stereo effect. 2-15 folded horn cab behind me to vibrate my body. Then other plush stack with the guitarist Vinnie Lauria was TWO 4-12 cabinets stacked next to his Marshall. Great sound. Because it was so old the Rickenbacker factory told me to only use flatwounds which have always been my signature sound.
How cool to find this. I have the exact same bass. '73 fireglo with checkerboard, even taken off the mute screws...LOL! Thanks so much for sharing this!
I have the same exact bass. Still have the Grover tuners but the nut broke some time ago and was replaced with a black one. Mine is slightly less yellowed than the one in the video. Thanks for sharing this video of this historic bass guitar! Oh, and I used to split the pickups to two different amps when playing live. A Model T Sunn amp to a 8 X 10" bottom and a Sunn Concert Bass to a folded horn 2 X 15" bottom. Wow, was lots of equipment to carry!
@@gregcoates4281 It was awesome in the day! Not gigging anymore though but still use it for home recording and now I play direct or use a little GK which also sounds great. It kind of sounded like the one you played in the video had half round strings. It was a little softer than Rotosounds. Perhaps was my headphones. In any event, thanks for the video it was great to watch!
Owner of a lonely heart. 🤘 rock on 🤘 Next time you demo a P for us throw some rotosounds and do a little My Generation for us, Greg. You can make a wide variety of Bass sounds. Again, Great Musicianship Mr Coates!!!
@@denniskramer9657 He's certainly not well know like any of the names Greg mentioned but definitely worth checking out. Live at The Ritz 1987 on UA-cam. Great Rickenbacker tone. And a lefty like Sir Paul but strings his bass high to low like Jimmy Haslip.
I remember how shocked I was by the unique and beautiful sounding bass played by Jon Camp when I saw Renaissance in Denver in, I think, '78. I'm 99% certain it was this model bass. And I think he called it Great White.
I thought the checkerboard binding, half inch neck pup spacing, and shark-fin inlays that go are all things that are indicative of it being even older than that
Yeah but his was a 4001s, which was devoid of binding and the sharktooth inlays. If I were to play a rick I'd certainly pick the s models, personally can't stand instruments without contours.
To best demonstrate the exquisite sound of 400* Rick basses you should always use stereo amplifiers or two 'mono' amplifiers and Rick-o-Sound outlet. Sn flatwound strings!
This dude is the best thing that ever happened to thumping Thursday
I own a Rick 4001 just like this. My favorite bass of all time - - and I've played 'em all.
That's the sound. Thank you so much for playing through the SVT. I can't believe he played Ace of Spades with his fingers!
It actually sounded pretty good.
I never realised how versatile a bass is, neither have I enjoyed watching someone play a bass so much, great playing and fascinating also👍
People think it's easy only because of 4 strings ..... The bass is the backbone of the band it's the feel and swing of every song.

I didn't like the other guy either.
Well said!!!
Finally Chris Squire getting recognised!!!
Hey He’s a Fish out of Water!
Love the energy Greg brought to the video. This guy shreds!!
Nothing else sounds like a Ric.
Nice playing, I really enjoyed this.
Got a 1976 in black and white. All original and I swear I’ll be buried with it
Awww, don't give it to the worms, mate! 😁 Go for cremation and you can be together forever in smoke...
Greg has me looking forward to Thumping Thursday! Great job Greg!
Heart of The Sunrise + CHANGES + OWNER OF LONELY HEARTS
LONG LIVE for CHRIS SQUIRE
Finally Greg with a Rick .... Best thing to happen to TT .... peace
Deep purples bass player uses a Rickenbacker, inherited my dads 4001 but still love my Fender Jazz Bass.
Ricky bass is a MONSTER!
Love it. so good when a bass player shows up for thumping Thursday. (not to knock the lovely and talented Mr. Lemmo).
Wow what tone, versatility and amazing burst' could not be demo'ed better, best vid I've seen all week thank's Greg and Norm's crew.
Phenomenal demo Greg. Love the Lemmy, Geddy and Chris Squire examples.

Greg that bass sounds so good Hi Jen
Fabulous demo thanks sounds so darn good .Absolute gem of a Bass
As a guitar player Gregg has made me pick up my old bass. Loving these thumping fridays
Australia 🇦🇺?
Love it amazing bass player
I got a Sunburst 1973 Harmony with original Hershey Bar PickUp, they're not worth $millions$ but it's priceless 2me
Greg Rules!

Totally beautifullllll!!!!!
Please keep this dude for Thumping Thursday !!
Rick bass. It doesn’t get any better. After 40 years of wanting one, I finally splurged and have it.
How do you like it ? I always wanted one for a few decades until I actually played one and decided I didn't want one that badly lol
@@sweengeppetto1915 you might like the 4004, they're a little more contemporary,
actual dream bass
wow I can feel the good vibes here in the UK, its all about the bass no treble.
Greg! Great job. You’re a keeper!
Awesome bass player.
Great addition to GOTD. Well done Team NRG!
Rickenbacker 4001 Bass is guitar of the CENTURY ❗❗❗
Excuse me, did he just successfully play Lemmy AND Chris Squire basslines without a pick? Impressive!
Rick ones sometimes remind me on2 preschool yard rocks. the laquered fbs really highlight this glowfactor. awesome! undeniable! 🧡❤️🔥
Great playing, love the Rics, glad Norms has a bass player, and a very good one.....🍁
Unique sounding electric bass. 👍👍👍👍 Thumping Thursday turn it up.
Just started typing "Lemmy!?" then he said it :)
Lol... was just typing “Red Barchetta?” Then he played it !
Nice work!
Got the same tuners on my 1978 4001!
Awesome
Scott Reeder of Kyuss also played one.
Yessssss he DID!!!

Obra prima👍👌
I would call that a bottle opener headstock!
I’m so appreciative that I own a 4001. It’s a beautiful guitar
I keep ragging on my bass player to ditch his fender for a ric. I hate the sound of Fender.
@@joellebrodeur1015 honestly bro

I have a 75 mapleglo i would love to have an earlier one with the toaster pick up awesome basses thanks for sharing !
Those guitars sound so good - how they're not beyond popular confounds me.
From the sounds of things its a combo of price, availability and not the greatest of engineering
Don’t forget Roger Glover !! Beautiful Rickenbacker😊 .
The best bass, and the only bass in my opinion...
Roger Glover from DP used the same model. It rocks.
That was a ton of fun for me, for obvious reasons. :-)
Another favorite Rickenbacker player is March Cesare from Eight Seconds.

The shape is an ocean wave.

When are you going to review a Spector or a Warwick
Didn't McCartney record a lot of the later Beatles _ solo stuff with this model?
Yes he did.
Roger Waters

Oscar Allston I believe was the man that played on all Rick James tracks just for fun info.
Love his version of 'Ace of spades'.
Geddy Lee used Ric-o-sound live and on record. Hence the massive sound.
Yeah but he ripped this bass and his sound off of chris squire so its more recognizable to him than geddy.
Those Ric single coils are so noisy though. Know if Geddy used anything to minimize that 60 cycle hum? particularly in the studio.
Chris Squire and Geddy Lee both used Rickover-sound, and the head stock is a cresting wave…
Not sure if somebody’s already put this in the notes but I believe red Barchetta was done on the 72 J Bass
Tom sawyer
What pedal did he use
I think that is older than a 73. The toaster pick up and in-lays to the edge were earlier I think.
Something about the toaster in the neck position that really adds to the tone on these. Time to get the wallet out and the soldering iron.
Coates Barchetta!
Unbroken - Monster Magnet
was a pedal used for the bridge tone? and if so what kind of pedal?
Malekko B:ASSMASTER,Germanium, best octave fuzz for bass ever ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I inherited my fathers 73 jetglo ,but no checker binding anyone know why ? Only right answers plz maybe an explanation also.
Checker binding could be found until 1973 July approx. I have a 1973 November with no checker binding, cool Bass 🤘🏻
That middle setting sounds like Cliff Burton.
Well he used one in early metallica
ah yes the scott pilgrim bass
"Backer" not Bocker!
👍🔥👏
