You didn’t mention the neck. The mid ‘70s Ric is second to none. I’ve had my ‘75 since new and the only thing I did was take out the cap. The one you’re playing here must be the same or the bridge pup wouldn’t have the volume it does. Good vid!
I've also got a '73 Rick that I have had since 1978. I will NEVER give this one up. The sound is amazing! Unfortunately the Grover pegs did fall apart and have been replaced by Schaller's. Nice playing by the way.
I knew a chick that fit that description. She got me by being quiet as anything. But I stayed for the GRRR... Cool video. Nice presentation. Great licks. Dang. There I go talking about that chick again.
I meet the lady I want to spend the rest of my life with, and you've got your hands all over her!!! I'll still subscribe because the rhythm section do things together.
Finally a RIC done right with shielding the way it should be. I would not mind getting my hands on a 73s so if the frets go bad they could be replaced without breaking the binding. Nice bass and yes I know I bad mouth them Ric can do a better job for what they charge. Like I said nice to hear a RIC done right.
Hey, great vid. Thanks for posting. Quick question: what kinds of things were done to improve the bass, including the shielding? I just installed some JBE hum buckers which work pretty well at eliminating the noise, but I'm curious what one could do to make those single coil pickups run without humming. Anyway, thanks again for your post. Cheers!
I have a 73 4001 that plays like a ferrarri, but lacks just a little on bridge volume. The bass is 100% factory. No mods. What would be the LEAST "damaging" way to get just a little more out of the bridge short of distortion, compression and artificial boosts? removing a capacitor? Taking the pickup cover off?
+smackythefrog23 Thanks for the question. The easiest way to get more out of the bridge pickup would be to bypass the .0047 capacitor that is holding back the pickup. It is the smallest of the three that are in there and a jumper wire across the connection would work. Let me know how it sounds when you do it! Thanks for watching!
After watching most of your Ric 4001/ 4003 Bass videos I noticed that when you have to "restore" a RIC you like to go with original factory parts basically. I think I only found one video where you installed a Hipshot bridge. What is your take on the factory bridges in comparison? Does a Hipshot really sound/ play and feel better that a RIC factory bridge as many claim...or is the only difference the ease of intonation? Would a Hipshot be considered an "upgrade" on a 2016 RIC 4003 in your opinion? I will install a Hipshot if it is "better" but I like the look of the factory bridge...playability and tone benefits would be my considerations if I switched. to a Hipshot. In once case you even took a BadAss off in favor of the RIC factory bridge...that kinda seems off to me but you may have a opinion that may shed some light on that decision.
+Gabriel61 For the most part, I have returned them to original or at least, factory stock. If they come to me with a badass bridge on them, I will have to play it to see if I can get the action down where I like it etc. The BadAss 1 is actually my favorite on the old basses but it requires a rout to sit low enough. There are a few common items that come up regarding the factory bridge. The first is the intonation...it is a little more challenging to get it where it needs to be and the bridge does tend to lift after short and long term spans. The hipshot bridge is a nice replacement and there are mixed reviews on them as well. I favor really low action and with the hipshot bridge, I was not able to get it down as low as I wanted. Hope that helps!
Great sounding bass! Did you ever measure the DC resistance of the pickups on it? I made my own Ric 4001 copy based on the old '73 Ric I used to have and am still playing around with old pickups to put into it to get the more aggressive sound I am looking for. Its helpful to know what the DCR is for a given sound. Thanks!
I have a 1980 4001 and I'm going to end up taking the mute in the bridge off and maybe even put a badass bridge on it. Of all the Rics you had did the bridge mute not being there make any difference?
The bridge mute only has an issue if they are pushing on the strings. I have had them on and off and I have not noticed any difference...Thanks for watching!
Anyone recommend me a good dealer for Ric’s? I’m on the hunt for a Ric that has this type of bite and an honest dealer that can help me find the right one in the ballpark of this bite.
Actually I blame you for (by posting this video and) convincing me to order a blue Rickenbacker 4003. And I as I await its delivery, which could be up to year, I am rounding up the materials to shield my new Rick. Your video demonstrated how good it can sound when shielded properly.
My 77 is my one and only, and i love it
Just like Ged
I have a 77 too. It almost plays itself. You pick it up and it brings a smile immediately.

+Michael Kalavity Thanks for the kind words....this bass was amazing! There are certain ones that should be kept....
Seven Cities of Gold! Aw yeah!

damn that thing sounds good
Believe it!!! No noise at all, amazing timber... mainly using rick-o-sound (stereo)

I have exactly this model... in red.
I want a Rick so bad maybe if I hit the lotto 😃

IRONSTORM4 thanks for the kind words! This is an amazing bass!

+bassjaymi ok cool. I appreciate the input and your perspective. Thanks.

soundmasterg I probably should have. It was an amazing sounding bass! Glad this helps!

+bassjaymi thanks for the reply. I have tried looking for the old '73's and you can't really find them. They seem to be the more rare ones.
The later 73s without the checker binding etc are easier to come by.....
Sounds like the cap is in the bridge pickup! Was it?
No, I took it out...
Hey great videos man !! Is this rick still 4 sale
+Mark Grech Thanks for watching! This one was sold a little while back..
@@bassjaymi for how much?
@@funstuff9651 It was sold some time back
@@bassjaymi i wonder what made this particular rick sound this way...
Cliff says more distortion!!!

TO be honest, a lot of them don't have this kind of bite...
Did you sell it?
+Ferg Music yes, it is gone
Where is the part with the shielding info? I can't seem to find it...or was it never done/uploaded?
+Gabriel61 sadly, the bass didn't stay here long enough for me to go through it. The new owner of it is amazed by it and it has become his #1~~
Thanks for getting back to me.
No prob!

aewsome! I will take the blame for that decision! Can't wait to hear your new Ric!
Cliff modified his rick,...not stock.
