  • Walking around an antique store looking for inspiration, I found an old school wooden carpenter's tool box. I was intrigued by the simplicity, utility, and durability of the box. Obviously old, and clearly built rapidly from remnants, the antique box was still solid, light, and strong. In summary, I was impressed by the purity of design, with absolutely no frills, the design solely reflecting the function of the box.
So, the old tool box never got old, or outdated, as there was nothing included in the design to become outdated. In short, as long as the purpose remains constant, the design will remain relevant.
Our version today continues the tradition of using job-site remnants for construction, including the use of job-site fasteners to put it together. I stained our version to make it look old, and later I will add linseed oil.

That's a nice tool box and I like the old time look you created. It's too bad we don't see those around anymore. I guess people decided a 5 gallon bucket works better. Too bad Mr. Axe didn't want to jump in there with the rest of the tools. :D

I think tools changed. In the old days it was auger bits and braces, handsaws, hand planes, large squares, and hammers. Like you say, now we pile our space-age battery powered tools in a bucket. And when those space-aged bells and whistles battery powered tools die, then we buy the latest model (we are glad to see the old ones die.)
Mr. Axe is getting a little too pretentious for me. Last week he wanted a raise, claiming that there hasn't been a single werewolf attack since he has been guarding the blackboard. Sure, he has been doing a good job, but Mr. Paper Hat has been on the job too, and I can't afford a raise for both of them.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope to see you next week.

I like the tool box. My only thing are the roofing nails. I might have used some old cut nails.

I didn't like the roofing nails either, but I had resolved (perhaps unwisely) that I would only use material on hand. In retrospect, either cut nails or box nails would have been better.
Always learning I guess. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You were serious about going old school to make this. You could have used one of your dowel rods but chose to turn your own handle. Do you use some kind of caliper set to ensure you have a uniform diameter the entire length. If I did something like this it would come out looking like a snake that had just swallowed a rat.
It is interesting to get inside your mind as you develop angles on your projects. It seems you hover between the artist and the engineer. There is definitely a left brain/ right brain component to a lot of your designs.
I am going to be one of your trolls and accuse you of also cheating in another way besides the glue. There seems to be evidence that you may have used brads to hold it in place while you were drilling the holes to put the nails in. Do my eyes deceive me there? I hope you know that I only mention this because you would be disappointed if I didn't notice it.
That Mr. Axe/Ax/Hatchet is such a Diva (or whatever the male equivalent to a Diva is)! Next thing you know he is going to demand you build him a fancy velvet lined walnut display case. Hahahahah!
Well, It is sunny and 30 degrees right now but we are supposed to be getting Snowmageddon here in East Tennessee. The temperatures are supposed to drop to 10 degrees as the day goes by and we are supposed to get as much as 2 inches of snow! I went and got my milk and bread yesterday (translated: extra adult beverages) and don't plan to leave my house again until it is well above freezing!!!! Stay warm down there in the balmy low country.

Sometimes I just use a Crescent Wrench set at the correct size. Hay, that's a pretty good take-a-way. Another little fact is that the dole only needs to be perfect, in this case, at each end.
Indeed, I would have been disappointed if you had not seen that cheat (the brads). However, I am consoled that I told a joke a few weeks ago and you missed it. But wait, if I tell a joke, but nobody notices, then is it still a joke? Deeper still, was it a joke prior to nobody noticing it, being converted to non-jokeness at some point? And exactly where is that transition point?
You are the reason I don't let Mr. Ax/Axe/Hatchet read the comments. A velvet lined box would just be the start. Soon he would insist on his own show, probably a cooking show featuring homegrown organic food (all purchased at the Dollar Store.)
Glad you got that "milk and bread," as you can't be too careful. Notice I'm doing comments now at 1600, as I expect I might break into the milk and bread later tonight; sometimes this low country milk and bread makes me too smart to properly communicate on UA-cam. That is, the next morning when I read my comments, I'm no longer smart enough to understand my pure wind-driven logic (all backed up with crystal clear unassailable facts, not contained anywhere else).
Thanks for watching and commenting. I look forward to it each week.

Fantastic idea to use a Crescent Wrench. I will remember that tip. Most people have Crescent Wrenches but few have calipers. Of course, I am sure that most wood turners have them.
Your joke is/was most definitely a joke. It amused you didn't it? Heck, I am always laughing at something I say or do. No one else is but it makes me laugh. Now, whether it is stand up material is a completely different thing. Also, people find different things funny. I recently had a comment on my camper tour video that said the person found me very funny. Unlike you, I didn't realize I was saying anything funny! Hahahahah Well, maybe the up on blocks statement.
Too bad neither one of us are animators. Mr Ax/Axe/Hatchet's organic cooking show would be a hit. Hahahahah
Yea. Last I looked out, we had almost a 1/2" of snow but it is 24 degrees and I have enough supplies to last for the duration! I plan to get a lot smarter here in a few minutes!
