Great little review there. I prefer the styling on the wrx, but both are lovely cars. I think in years to come, the 'purple patch' of Japanese cars will really be remembered fondly with these kinds of cars. There's so much character here... Off to the classifieds...

The great thing is, with the few imperfections that they have (me talking about my classic really), you can easily correct them with a few relatively simple changes.
Anti Roll bars, bushes etc etc.

My mate Paul has this very one for sale.. he did not get on with the seats!
Can be an issue with many Japanese sporty cars from back then. They tend to be measured more for Japanese folk's build. Now I'm about 1.5 Mick Jaggers in body shape so have no trouble, but if you're more normal/well built they can prove uncomfortable.

Also my mum's cousin had an early grey import STI back in the day which was ridiculous. True wolf in sheep's clothing. Looked like a minicab!
Both are my favorite Impreza generations Classic and Bugeye !

I had a Classic and 2 blobeyes. Fantastic cars, so full of character, my ears still prick up the off beat thrum of a flat 4. A 330 bhp WRX makes a really quick, useable road car. The Classic has it's own charm. Great clip 👍

Yep. stock vs stock would be nice but viscerally impossible.. and also vitally impossible for anyone to actually buy!
276hp on that year wrx same as the sti but has a smaller turbo (td04)
yeah a mechanic told me '97 v4 wrx's actually have sti specs, so you can confirm this?

yes!! Did consider and EVO but there is so much more value with these. And I think they are cooler.
XXVII, as I've commented to Cletus, you guys should each review a car, watch each other's videos, and then do a video where you discuss your findings/opinions. I suggest this because all the guff about " real drivers " and " driver's car " is purely subjective and no two people have the same opinions. It should make interesting and entertaining viewing.
Definitely totally subjective.. me and James rarely seem to agree on much!

Having owned both of these models I can honestly say my 2000 GC8 was a far quicker car than my 2001 GDA. As for handling and braking and overall enjoyment my Bugeye wins hands down. In the process of building a motor which should give me between 430 - 460 @WHP.

The bugeye is a far better driver, i always thought the classic was good car i had 6 classics type r.ra.etc but i now have a S202 and the difference is chalk and cheese,
yours should be runnin 276 hp from standard being a 97 model

Why I favour naturally aspirated. Sure, you fancy turbo boyos have plenty of grunt, but my power delivery doesn't have lag. 😂
Actually this vid reminded me of one of the best road "duels" I ever had many moons ago. It was me in my DC2 Type R and another driver in a classic Rexie in that lovely Scooby blue. Went on for about ten miles up sweeping Irish B roads, me following them. Nothing too crazy, but crazy enough that the local constabulary may have taken umbrage... _Very_ smooth driver of the Scooby and they had me digging deep at times. Anyway, we both came to a stop in a town at traffic lights in different lanes. I look over to acknowledge the driver and there she was, a middle aged Muslim lady. Wearing a headscarf of very nearly the same colour blue as her car. The gobsmacked look on my face reduced her to giggling, she gave me a thumbs up and off she went up another road. And sparing the horses she was not. You just never can tell who's a petrolhead :)
Neither of those cars are STI's just base model WRX's with a terrible 5 speed gearbox, i doubt either are pushing more than 240bhp as a wrx..
Who else feels that he has said absolutely nothing distinctive between the two cars?
Love the engines. But not the styling... Only the Hawkeye and legacys, Foresters :)

You make a good point but there just aren’t many of these cars about that are totally stock
