Forget Gladiator! El Djem was in an episode of Emmerdale Farm in February 1988. Kathy & Jackie went to Tunisia for their honeymoon. I remember it being quite the big deal at the time. I think it was the first time an episode of Emmerdale Farm was filmed abroad. It was on TV on my mum's birthday we watched eating a birthday treat of crispy duck & garlic prawns from the Chinese. Happy travels!
Hi guys, I hope all is well with you and your families. I respect that you may be taking a break. We do miss your videos and would love to watch more when you are ready 😊❤
How lovely to see El Djem again, I visited in 1974 when I was 13 years old, there wasn’t much tourism in Tunisia then.. the President at the time was staying in our hotel in Sousse which only had 2 hotels at the time ..
I visited that colosseum in El Djem in the 80s, it is a very impressive example 😍 Surprised so few visit these days, back then there was plenty of tourists and it was on all the tour lists. Are you going to visit Matmata is the other place I remember the most, and the pretty blue town of Sidi Bou Said and it's bird cages.
Hey, cool that you visited in the 80s. I bet it's quieter these days. We didn't actually go to Matmata but we will save it for another trip. Sidi Bou Said we visited but didn't really like it as it was very fake compared to the rest of Tunisia so we didn't include in a video :)
Stunning place to visit, and to read in the comments that it was once a busy tourist destination makes you wonder and realise how political events can make or break an economy by damaging a reputation. The world could be a better place if more people took note and took more care over their ancestral lands. Great vlog once again. Cheers 👋
It is not the colosseum, but an amphitheatre. The colosseum is the name given to the amphitheatre of Rome due to the colossal statue of Neron next to it!
We had been wondering how you are doing then up you popped! Happy to see you again and at a spectacular place. Looks magnificent. Love these sort of ruiins and cant wait for our trip to Tunisia in Oct. This place is on our list for visit. Hopefully it wont be too crowded. Loved this Tunisia adventure, thanks so much for showing us places and your honest opinions. See you next time where ever that may be. 💯👍
Hi to you both, thanks for your reply glad everything is good with you too and yes you always have to make time for family and each other, keep well and safe. Simon
Great video to end the series rally enjoyed coming along thank you both only one issue 2weeks and still no video WTF!!! Only joking guys Looking forward to the next video Take care and stay safe
Did you know they actually filmed Gladiator here... Apparently the cost of filming in Rome was too high for them so the filmed here instead and CGI'd Rome into it during the editing. That's another best kept secret. You guys are so respectful of how your showing Tunisia. I'm enthralled with your videos and so jealous I'm not there, however watching you guys enjoy yourselves so much there is filling my heart. My hubby of 14 years is tunisian and we live in North Wales. We miss the fam and we miss being there. El Jem is so atmospheric isn't it... You can feel its history, its energy, the lives that were spent there... Its one heck of a place, right?! ❤
Wow guys that was spectacular look at history ❤♡❤ fabulous love historical stuff ☆☆☆☆☆ what an amazing experience thank you for taking us along with you ❤❤❤ stay safe be happy be free 😀 cat wait to see what you find next........
Just incredible that you can walk around the whole colosseum. Walking the same steps as ancient Tunisians and Romans did. Thanks for sharing your wonderful journey journey. Hopefully you will make a video about the total cost of your time in Tunisia. I've watched every episode and the majority of your videos and I find it hard to believe how cheap everything is there. I used to think Turkey was just incredibly affordable, unless you hit a donkey. 🤔😉
@@act_sion As nouns the difference between amphitheater and coliseumis that amphitheater is (us) a semi-circular acoustic backdrop behind performers for an outdoor venue while coliseum is a large theatre, cinema, or stadium:
Sorry Duncan. Just one week off to enjoy time with friends. Only 1 or 2 more videos of this Tunisia series left though I'm afraid and then we will be taking time off videos whilst back home with family :)
I'll have to hunt out my photos from 29 years ago when we went there. I know we went, but I don't really recall much detail. That's what's so good about technology today and UA-cam.
Thanks so much for sharing. I visited this Colosseum in El Jem some 50 years ago. Seems the town is bigger but the Colosseum is just the same and maybe with some "Et tu, Brute?" resounding in the walls? Keep on tramping! and share more :-)
Stunning video - can totally relate to your surprise regarding the juxtaposition of amphitheatre and cafes. The amphitheatre in Nimes had the same effect on me. Those Romans sure built to last.
Fascinating place! Interesting to read in the comments that this was once a very popular tourist attraction but over time has become an almost forgotten gem. Super vlog again guys. You will have to include this in your travel documentary 😉. 👋
I’m thinking the same, I can’t help but worry about these guys there so nice and trusting, where are they now? One comment mentioned a tv show? What’s that about. In any case does anyone know if they are okay
I am wholly impressed with the camera work! Beautiful light and just magical. What kind of camera are you using? Do you use it on a pole at times? I have missed some of your clips and wonder about Tunisia and it's difficulties with getting there and back to the EU. Keep at it and keep smiling even if the jokes are a tad lame at times...LOL! Love from Canada.
If you liked Eldjem you should definitely visit the Roman sites of Bulla Regia, Douga and Sbitla, these are three ancient Roman cities that are so well preserved and beautiful, Dougga especially is located on top of a hill in a rural area with a wonderful view on the Tunisian north, bulla regia in the other hand is impressive by its size
My dad's hometown. I used to go to upper most part of the coliseum to smoke cigarettes away from familiar eyes (family everywhere) The cafe you went to, i took my Canadian gf in 2022 when i was there.

Cool video, thanks a lot♥, but the coliseum is not by far the most stunning thing u can find in Tunisia, if u felt there like in Rome, u should check out the ruins in Sbeitla or even in Dougga u ll feel like like u re re in ancient Greece or El Ghriba synagogue the oldest in africa ,the Ain El Dahab Cave that stretches for 3 km the longest in africa too, or The North Africa American Cemetery dedicated to WWII american and britich soldiers that fought in the battle of Tunisia against the Nazis... list goes on...
