WOW! I’ve been watching and learning about photoshop for over a decade and this is the first video that COMPLETELY explained gradient maps!! You not only explained how to do but WHY to do it! Thank you so much!
SUPER DUPER. Comprehensive. Detailed...The little things that are relevant, without going on a tangent. Easily understood. Professional delivery...from "the guy next door." I need to dig into more of your tutorials. Thank you!
This video was presented 3 years ago. Three years later, after viewing this for the first time, I finally understood how gradient maps work. Because of that, I can be more creative with color grading using gradient maps. I've been using PS for several years and consider myself an advanced amateur and even that may be a stretch. I'm certainly not a pro. This tutorial will help move me to the Pro level. 😄 In all seriousness, this was a game-changer for me. Thank you.
I am absolutely awed by this tutorial. I've been using gradient maps forever & had no idea how simple it is to manipulate them into giving you much better results. Of particular interest was the part explaining how to get less blocked up shadows & less blown out highlights when using the soft light blend mode. Much appreciated. Looking forward to more awesome tutorials from you.

Thanks for checking out this video where I show you how to add creative color effects to your images by color grading them in Photoshop using gradient maps! You'll learn how gradient maps work, why they are perfect for color grading, and how to use a gradient map to give your image a more cinematic look by replacing the photo's original colors with the colors from a gradient. I also show you how to combine gradient maps with layer blend modes for different results, how to save your custom gradients as presets that can be quickly applied to other images, and even how to drag and drop gradient maps from one image to another! There's a lot to cover, so the chapter times are in the description.
This is a brilliant video. Clearly explained and at a helpful pace. Clearly colour grading takes understanding and practise. This video provides a solid foundation. Many thaniks.
Thank you so much for this very instructional video. I have been looking for this for a long time to replace presets we need to purchase. You're explanations are so clear. You are a very good instructor.
Great tutorial on gradient maps - a very powerful tool and for me it's not one that springs to mind first when tweaking images. I have a tip for anyone watching tutorials like these - turn the sound off - Then on the settings cog - switch captions on and then reduce the speed to something like 0.5 or 0.75. A nice slow way to absorb information!
I MUST leave a comment. I followed several color grading tutorials: poorly explained, too many words. This was so clear and PRECISE! I am your new fan. I am applying this to my work. THANK YOU!!
This is the tutorial that has given me the correct understanding of what goes on in colour grading and made me feel like start using it. As an engineer with a background in image processing, I loved how the explanation can be useful both for my analytic self and for an average only final results oriented guy. Now it's time to apply it in the GIMP with the knowledge acquired ;)
That said, Davies Media Design did already a good job in his "Steal the Color Grading From Any Image With GIMP" tutorial, but I prefer your insight in using colour.
Really appreciate your teaching style and the methodical approach. Really helped me in creating amazing Color graded pictures. Thank you for such a comprehensive video!
I just start using Photoshop not long ago. Loved this video explanation in details. Really thankful for that 🙌🏻. Most UA-camr explained either very fast or unable to understand fully. So far this video is the best I had came across. Once again thank u very much
Great video - I have looked at several UA-cam Gradient Map videos, but so far none have mentioned the Opacity sliders or sufficiently emphasised the need to start with default colours. Consequently I was confused, but this has largely sorted me out.
Wow! Excellent teaching skills. This smooth, perfectly paced comprehensive (not overpowering) instructional method is hard to find. Thank you.... Is it possible for me to select one of my existing images and copy and paste the exact color combo with no map to a new image? Thanks.
Great explanation on color grading. With the release of 2022 CRF version of color grading, with the exception of being able to save presets, what do you feels are the advantages of the cg adjustment layer over CRF cg? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
It's not only THE SUBJECT YOU ARE DISCUSSING...../Your manner of presenting and explaining is very convincing/fun to listen to...and on top its so very helpful therefore ,MUCH appreciated. THANKS !!!
Great video. I have a question though. Why not save the Gradient map as a LUT instead of dragging it to another file? Wouldn't that be way more practical than opening the same PSD image over and over just to copy the layer? Or am i missing something? Does anyone have input on this?
thanks Steve ,Very informative and educational. I have question for you thou How to determine the exact Number of HSL. for a given Color ? thank you very much
really great tutorial. What I am wondering is how you know that the blue you want is H: 220 or whichever? How do you learn that? I don't even know what term to search for?
It's all based on the traditional color wheel. H is the Hue (the "main color"). S is the Saturation, and B is the Brightness. Knowing the specific Hue value for certain colors is just something you learn over time. But if you want to learn about which color combinations work best together, you want to learn Color Theory. It's a huge topic but just learning the basics can make a big difference.
Amazing ! it was out of thought that only applying "Apply image" we can do the exposure blend ! I want to know more on this "apply image' i.e. why it is happening with apply image ? what is the reason behind that? Waiting for your response.

Wow. This is the BEST tutorial on color grading I've watched. You explained it so clearly.
SUPERB is all I can say. You do all the detail that make it easy to follow. Being slow minded because I am old, I play back at 75% speed.
Finally, the complete tutorial on colour grading with gradient maps. Thank you so very much.
This is the most comprehensive video about gradient maps. Thank you.
You are the best Photoshop teacher I've encountered on UA-cam. Thank you.
