Wheras pink was appropriate for young boys as red was considered a bold manly color associated with blood and war. Pink, being a lighter shade was thus the boyish version.
The major color-swap took place during the 1940s, when US clothing manufacturers started making predominantly pink for girls and blue for boys, as that's what they thought would sell (and it did).
Gendered color codification, prior to the post-modern era was not absolutely set in stone though.
Throughout art, you will find examples of boys wearing blue, and girls wearing pink even before the 1940s. Traditions would vary.

Years ago there was no color defining gender. Men wore very brightly colored clothes including pink. In the seventies black men wore pink, it did not define their masculinity, no does it now!
