Final Update: My theory about the developer being from China turned out to be very very WRONG. This project was a small side thing made almost as a joke, that wasn't meant to be public, but got leaked out anyway. The build in this video is actually a slightly older version, and eventually swimming, climbing, and gliding were added to the game. However, work has barely progressed in the last 6 years, so it doesn't sound like there'll be any more updates to this. As far as I'm aware the developer doesn't want the old build being shared, so I won't be sharing my ROM files (sorry!). This was an interesting experience nonetheless. The original thread: www.reddit.com/r/NintendoDS/comments/1g3unsx/comment/ls4376g/ If you liked this video, be sure to subscribe and check out some of my other stuff!
@Just_Jasen Guess I'll subscribe, and hope you upload a video when the full project launches. Good idea for the dev to remain anonymous for the time being, as Nintendo could easily bring down the hammer
The proportions look amazing but I wonder if it was only possible because it's such a barebones demo so all the processing power was able to go towards that.
I actually found the creator of BoTW DS after seeing the original thread and deciding to look into the origins of it. He said it was a small personal project he (and a few others) made and only ever shared with a select few people, so he's not sure who leaked it, let alone the journey it went on to eventually make it onto an aliexpress flash cart. Update: While I initially stated that the people involved did not want the publicity from the old project, several members have since given public statements. Jasen's pinned comment has been updated and is accurate.
Can you ask him if he'd prefer for me to unlist this video? I just wanted to show off something cool, but I kinda feel bad "profiting" off something that's not really supposed to be public (profiting as in with views and subscribers lol). If he's cool with it remaining up than that's chill too. Also on a more selfish note, can you ask if he had to do something special to get it to render? Usually when I run a game on MelonDS (which is what I do for footage in my videos) it makes the 3D way more clear, but here it remained very pixelated.
the DS only has better texture sizes other than that the N64 is way more powerful, it could run 10 times the polygon count. And has better shaders as well with the microcode.
@SpeedyGwen and @Syper7, I believe the truth is somewhere between what the two of you say, from my understanding, the two are very similar in capability, with the ds besting the n64 in 3D because of its lower resolution and higher density storage (good for audio and textures). But the n64 has better filtering (for larger screens; obviously necessary) and can handle more polygons (not 10x, maybe 1.25x).
@@freescape08 I was also talking in therm of CPU power, tho the n64 is extremely limited by it's absolutely abysmal bus speed, the NDS doesn't have that problem as much ontop of having both a quite good arm9 CPU and the GBA arm7 CPU at it's use for extra computing, I never tested how strong it actually is but I know that it can do much better than the n64 CPU in general from the few homebrew and ROM hacks I did back a decade ago
Oh, cool! This was probably done with a lower resolution heightmap of Hyrule in order to craft the geometry (a grayscale image in which lower geometry is darker and higher geometry is lighter) [I believe this is the MainField.hmap file in that explorer window you pulled up] and then a texture mapping system that applies a different texture depending on the slope. This is awesome! Here’s a fun fact: The base for the map of the actual Breath of the Wild is just a collection of really high resolution heightmaps with overhanging terrain added on as separate models. In a way, this is a very technically accurate implementation of the map.
You can tell Hyrule in Botw/Totk is made of heightmaps when you see the small heart shaped pond, the resolution of the terrain making the pond is kind of smooth and fuzzy
@@user-wb8iu1hl6i Indeed. It’s actually possible to export the full resolution heightmaps, and string them together in a similar fashion, but I haven’t quite figured out how to do it yet.
Prime hunters on ds is actually a decent first person shooter. Even better if you play it on a 3ds. A super impressive game for the ds. I don’t see why people over look it as an actual Metroid prime game because it really is worthy of it. I bet the snes could pull it off too.
@@theartshow1476 The SNES could absolutely NOT pull of Metroid Prime Hunters, SNES hardware is not even close to being on-par with DS hardware, it needed the SuperFX chip to even be able to do a full game's worth of "3d", and even then the 3d rendering is leagues more basic than what the DS can do. Just compare Star Fox on the SNES to Star Fox Command on the DS. See how much more advanced the DS' graphics are?
I love terrain generators like these in very small games, where the terrain looks more refined the closer you are to it. Take Elite II: Frontier for example, the game has a galaxy-sized map, mostly procedural. The crazy part is how the game is only 400 to 800 KB in size, which is insane.
I would imagine this "mysterious creator" wants to remain anonymous out of fear that Nintendo's kill agents- uh, I mean, lawyers would want to have a word with them if they knew who made it.
This is even more impressive when you consider that the main CPU of the DS runs at only 67MHZ meaning that its processing power places it between the PS1 & N64 and its clock speed is most similar to that of a high end 486
I remember seeing screenshots of this years ago on Discord and never hearing about it again. I am convinced that the creator of that homebrew was on that Discord server. I can also confirm what someone else said in the comments, I remember they referred to the project as "a personal project".
You can do it in any video editor with one image, just a larger than the screen image moving in diagonal and before it reaches the limit move it back to the upper right and repeat
I know it won't happen but it would be so cool to see someone pick up the torch and develop a full game out of this- probably without the content and physics of the actual game but with enemies, quests etc. if at all possible. Would be a massive undertaking that Nintendo could take down at any time, but if it ever progressed that far it would be a legendary project
i love seeing old tech being used in ways we could never imagine, still one of the most impressive things is probably that asterix game on the gba imho
this is pretty cool! the BOTW files have heightmap data the whole base terrain pre-sorted into levels of detail. it's not crazy complex to turn those into a fully detailed & LOD-ed map with textures, but I am really impressed by the detailed link model with full animations and collision. I wonder if they're using real skeletal animation, or exporting vertex positions over time like Quake?
If they made a demake for 3ds where the graphics would be much smaller, the textures would be weak, and useless resources would be removed, it would give a good experience.
Basically Lego Island 2, running on a Nintendo DS? I'm sorry, but the fact that this build lets you elevate up steep hills reminded me of Caddy's personal way to insult "The Brickster's Revenge".
I think you can make open world work on a DS if you do it like Mario 64. Make different areas load in instead of having everything already loaded in. It’s like Nintendo’s trick to make BotW run by replacing trees with pngs from a far distance.

Maybe have things lesser. Get back a normal item menu. Instead of 900 Koroks, do 100 like the Oot Skulltulla. But keep everything else. Just bite sized Botw would be nice.
I agree. This would be a really awesome project for the Wii. Personally, I think that Splatoon should be ported to the Wii with local multi-player as well.
@TSP05 first of all, no, I have a Nintendo switch, it's the best way to play Botw. Second of all, NO, I only said this because from studying skyward sword, I see a lot of similarities between the engines of that game and breath of the Wild. I'm saying how it will be interesting to see a more primitive version of breath of the wild meant for the Wii that can still be enjoyed, but a little bit more similar to skyward sword just to see where the engines compare in similarities smarta**.
This is how people 20 years from now are going to see Breath of the Wild due to how fast technology advances. (Also this is just gonna be another “can it run Doom” thing but it’s BOTW)
