7:58 WHAT???
5:30 you can just put on a cap
it was controversial? young me with my new fat ds just wanted to play my favourite 64 game on the go. without watching the video, in my memory I would answer this as a definite yes
I’m pretty sure you were the person who recommended me to play this game basically, thank you. I have now beaten it but I got really lost and sadly had to use a guide. Only really one problem I have is the limited coins, because you can quite literally be soft locked out of the route you planned on doing.
i had the exact same first experience that you outlined, but barbuta really clicked for me when i got into a call with a friend and just streamed it with him. the process of discovery was enhanced so much by having a partner naturally notice things, we collectively got our minds blown at some of these secrets. this game is just so good man
When I first played UFO 50, it was on the couch with two friends on my Steam Deck. I booted up Barbuta... and was absolutely entranced. The game was abrasive, slow, and after game over-ing once, my friends were ready to move on. I was hooked, but moved on for the sake of my friends. But Barbuta's place as the first game in UFO 50 is so masterful. By placing such an unapproachable game first, it teaches players that not every game in this collection will be for you, and that it's okay to move on! I handed the controller to my friend who accidentally selected Night House, and then that game hooked the rest of them immediately, and we just started jumping around. UFO 50 is great, and I would love to hear more of your analysis on the other games!
Great video!
Nice pfp
The idea of using the Hats to "fake" the other characters bothers me more than it really should. I never lie to Koopa, I just go do other stages until I actually have Mario. Can't explain it.
I was so moved by this game I was thinking of making this video. Glad you did it instead, mine would not have been as eloquent anyway!
I don't think that Barbuta is "bad on purpose", so much as it's being authentic to the design of games from the period it's emulating. The storage and processing limitations of home computers meant that games had to be brutally difficult in order to extend the play time to more than ten minutes or so. If anything, it's probably far too lenient when you compare it to stuff like Jet Set Willy - which is similar in its design language, though the items are just collectables that you need to pick up and confer no new powers.
1:19 dude I’m not even sure you’ve ever actually were supposed to think that wall was real in the first place.
No
Barbuta caused a bunch of people to harass me, so I don't know if i'd call it "incredible" 🙃🙃🙃🙃
First game I played in the collection and I spent a good hour or something on it my first time. I love games that let me explore hostile, uncaring labyrinths and Barbuta did not disappoint. I've mapped all of Metroid 1 and Megami Tensei 1 out by hand on paper with a pencil and have happily been drawing out maps for Barbuta, too. However, it's only my second favorite game in the collection to Mooncat, which is actually unironically my GOTY for 2024. I've put about 8+ hours into it just replaying it endlessly and seeing how fast I can go and how much more I can push myself with the tech, and the atmosphere alone completely floored me the first time I played it. Great vid! UFO 50 touched me in a way most modern games just can't. Would've payed 25 happily for just Barbuta and Mooncat, but they gave us Divers too. :D
I still have to Cherry Mooncat but I'm pretty excited to check out Divers afterwards!
@@Just_Jasen Ay yeah, I cherried it ages ago and felt kinda sad. Apparently I still have one hidden room left to find, and even then I love practicing the game. When I heard Divers was Barbuta 3 and thus also Mooncat 2 I was very very excited.
Great video! <3
Would genuinely love for this to become a series, (if you do feel like you have things to say about the other games on UFO 50, that is)
I'm not sure if I have as indepth thoughts on all of them but I'll definitely consider doing some more! I just Cherried Party House and honestly that one could be expanded to it's own game
You convinced me! I actually want to try this game now.

Barbuta? More like Midbuta. Gottem!
Banned for 1700 hundred years
Yoshi CAN kill the boo to get into BBH, but he has to ground pound it and he can't eat the ghosts.
The extra stuff is awesome and the inclusions with SM64DS was fun for what it was but movement, momentum, and game feel is everything in platformer and the lack of analog killed it for SM64DS. SM64 has its issues but it's peak as far as Mario's movement goes, only to finally receive real competition in that respect in 2017 with Mario Odyssey.
YOU CAN PUNCH THE TOX BOXES AS WARIO? i thought wario throwing players in the multiplayer mode was the last extra moveset thing i was gonna learn about 64ds
try the new 3ds or 2ds series.. maybe just maybe it would....
The only way mario wonder wins as a 2d platformer against nsmb ds is if you exclude the "new" super mario games
The DS version feels more like a romhack instead of an actual official game, and not in the good way
I've spent a good deal of time thinking about the history of Nintendo's design philosophy changes over the years. And they're more and more reaching the point of "If you don't play the game in the way we intend, you're playing it wrong." Part of what made SM64 so fun for me was that it had a larger possibility space for each star. There are lots of ways to do most of the things in the game. And if you weren't good enough for one thing, you could often do it in a different way. Everything I've seen about the DS version suggests that Nintendo was pushing more towards "There's one right way to play this game." It's not as pronounced as their later games, but you can definitely see some of it. Ceave covered this while talking about a challenge run he attempted for the recent Zelda game where you play as Zelda. It's a very interesting view on things, and I think explains some of the backtracking. And backtracking seems to be something Nintendo likes these days...
If they made a demake for 3ds where the graphics would be much smaller, the textures would be weak, and useless resources would be removed, it would give a good experience.
cant wait for the jasen movie
Someone should bring it to the 3DS, and add enemies and buildings ands stuff (ofc a sword 2)
DS is objectively superior when it comes to content. 64 objectively plays better. DS has more cool things to do like saving Mario, Luigi, and Wario. 64 has more fun things like optimizing your movements every time you play to decrease your times if that's your style. DS has a much more modern and refined feel to it. 64 has a lot of charm in its old-fashioned graphics that give it its unique character. As for me? I strongly prefer the DS version. The additional characters and the more complex art design alone make the game superior in my eyes.
what file viewer are you using?
about the 3 chests and the tension because of limited oxygen in the original, you could just swim up and get air, removing the other 2 chests is actually a time saver and not baffling with this in mind, I think the devs just realised the 3 chests was stupid with the air in mind, but they didn't want to completely remove the chests so they went with the middle ground and just simplified a somewhat pointless puzzle.
Man sonic frontiers looks great on DS.

Stuff like this is really cool
back when the first trailer came out, I saw it on my 3DS and was really looking forward to playing it on it.
This is some mid-90s graphics.
"remade entirely for the ds" to "you can only walk around a map replica" what a brainlet opening
I grew up with SM64DS and used to never have issues with the D-pad controls, but in recent years it feels absolutely awful to return to, I can only ever play it on a modded 3DS with the circle pad patch enabled lol
My favorite feature of the DS version was that you were able tog round pound signs. The character lies on the ground to read the sign. This seems to be an easter egg. Wario is heavy he just hits the signs fully into the ground in 1 groundpound
3:45 just realized the third ball is representing King bob-omb itself..
Lack of invisible walls alone makes DS better
If the Koopalings stayed in the story, whom would you place where? I'd love to imagine Morton and Roy being the end bosses in Bobomb Field to be a shocker to see two bosses to beat.Or Ludwig and Lemmy in place of the ice boss, using yodeling with Lemmy frantic random moving, to another fun shocker. Butttt we didn't get this.
The "Glowing" Rabbits (or Sparkling Rabbis if we're being honest here) could've been replaced by Bowser's Koopalings much more exciting. I imagine that they could've done this by saying that Bowser is letting his Koopalings let loose on the castle grounds to keep Mario and friends busy.
I think this would make a very good base for porting legem of Zelba brth that was wild all the way to a 3DS
We need wwwario to tell us how to get waluigi
"This is Breath of the Wild, but remade ENTIRELY on Nintendo DS, but don't get your hopes up because it's not remade entirely".
Hi👋
I really liked the addition of new characters, new stars, new mechanics and reimagined levels but what I didn't like was the removal of the other cap switches and gatekeeping their abilities via characters. Revisiting the the former switch palace stages felt pointless.
