Hello friend, unfortunately the quality of the video of the semifinal this really very bad, while the final video this much better, thanks for watching and commenting, happy 2013!
The reaction of Mcnroe shows how much a win over Lendl meant to him at that point. Ivan was near to his peak then and was dominating Mcnroe and this was a famous and surprise victory for Johny Mac. Ivan could have taken it more magnanimously and appreciated MCs effort a bit more. But he was in his one zone of being the best in the world and was not taking losses to lesser players kindly. And yes Mc was sadly a lesser player by then..a shadow of his imperious self of 84. Never the less a terrific win for him.
Disagree. Mac was definitely NOT a lesser player than Lendl in 1989, which was a year in which Mac played at his best, and he was "only" number 4 in the world, but he could have been much more. In this case he beat Lendl pretty easy, and Lendl was not at his peak anymore. anyway.
@@ritira20mila .. i have said Lendl was near his peak and not at his peak. Lendl's peak was 1985 US open to 1987 Masters. He however was close to his best in 1989 and the World No 1 till June 1990. Look at Lendl's record in 1989 vs Mcenroe's record. Not even close. Lendl won 10 titles including the Aus open vs Mac's 3. Lendl also had one of his best Wimbledon's and reached the US open final for a record 8th time. So you may disagree but the numbers tell a different story. Also Lendl beat Mac at the 1989 Australian open in straight sets, before that he had defeated him at the 1985 US open, 1987 US open and 1988 French open. In 1989 Lendl also beat Mcenroe at the Canadian open finals which was a rout and demolished him in the Master's RR. So the record speaks for itself and Mac was sadly a much lesser player post 1984 US open.
Last time John beat Ivan , Ivan was the #1 player in the world at the time of this match....McEnroe wanted this one bad...the 84 French Final will always haunt him, thee one that he absolutely had and blew it....Mac too me was the best of the 80's singles & doubles
The best match played by Mcenroe in the second part of his career, after his sabbatical in 1986. Alongside the Davis Cup match v Becker in 1987 probably. He played near his best v Edberg in the Wimbledon semis of 1989 too, but Stefan was unbelievably good on the day
omg... FINALLY, the whole match!!! mac got lucky twice: agassi pulled out in the qtrs and lendl got a game penalty here this may be the only match where mac beat #1 ranked lendl... it was pretty much all lendl after their '85 us open final - mcenroe lost so much of his form it was pathetic mac got up to #4 in the world in '89, just behind the big three and ahead of gilbert (#5) & agassi (#6)... i estimate mac played about 40% of his '84 form that year
Yah I caught his last tournament victory a few months later. The Lendl Mac rivalry was interesting in the way that it was pretty much all one way or the other. All Mac then All Lendl for the most part.
Note on the very same court not long before Mcenroe had destroyed Noah and Leconte in Davis cup. Noah had said after that he felt he was only on the court to make McEnroe “feel good”. Lol. John was in nearly vintage form for a while here.
McEnroe's serve in better shape, giving it for more control. Difference on the positioning best, Lendl's forehand is under pressure of the move. It's difficult to see whether the ball was online at the same time, but it looks good. In recording many odd cases, lots of the balls called out are in. In fact. How to beat these players'? On decide: Piercing 2nd serve down the line. Keep on trackin'. Lendl likes to move, change the position, when hitting through ball. McEnroe, likes to keep his position, when goin' to net. WCT 2/3 😌
A desperate McEnroe vs an angry perhaps tired irritable Lendl who only capitulated 1 out of 15 break points: I’m a great McEnroe fan but he was bang on average in this match compared to the 84 version so frustrating!

getting some tickets for this match was defo a good move.
Thank you so much for this match
Man, if they only had instant replay back then. I bet a fair number of outcomes would have been different.
Would be actually watchable if you could see the damn ball

I cannot see the ball... Thank you for posting man anyway. If you were to get your hands on a better quality video please post it. Thank you!

Lol! "That stupid lady"! "What"! "Whisper in my ear"!
Right on, right on. Yah it was almost there but not quite. Won't stop me from watching it though LOL.
2:29:26 "That's a horrible call that's what that was!" lol

McEnroe needed all the help he could get here. Without the point and even game penalty he probably would not have won. Still a good effort, though.
Thanks nostradamus...
