Retired professional basketball player Smush Parker expressed his disbelief upon hearing of former teammate Kobe Bryant's passing. Parker admitted to initially thinking the news was a hoax. He was at his church, where he volunteered as a security guard, when he was informed of Bryant's demise. He remembers crumbling to his knees in disbelief. Definitely one of the saddest days of my life. The strange thing is I literally went to bed that morning (having worked a night shift) watching the Kobe interview with the pivot podcast. So when I woke up later in the evening, I saw the news and thought Google's algorithms had fed me some hoax news based on what I watched before going to bed. Sad sad day.

I mean, he was basically shot dead right in front of his home by a crazed fan. It's a tough thing that people would actually attempt to dog his legitimate reaction. He spent a lot of time with the man, and it's pretty clear he actually got why Kobe was a prick. It wasn't because he hated him, it was just because he wanted to win. And while they had a tough time playing together, even Smush felt he needed to apologize and actually felt he could reach out to Kobe for his pastor -- and Kobe did respond and actually filled his teammates request.
It's different for pro athletes, pretty much any of them would be shocked if the superstar they played with and spent a ton of time with playing is gone in one of the most shocking ways possible.
It's one of the biggest reasons to miss Kobe is that his style of leadership was pretty much the same as Jordan's, and we don't have him still here to smack this generation in the mouth and say "We gave an actual fuck, that's why we were the way they were." It's one thing if you're an asshole, it's much different if you're the same asshole to everyone, and it's actually for a legitimate reason like "I WANT US *ALL* TO BE BETTER."
I didn't play pro, but I had teammates for several years I couldn't stand, and now that we're older and wiser, I value them a lot as people and friends, and the ones that aren't true friends still show love now when I see them.
Being a leader is super tough, and so is learning how to follow. Some people never learn, some learn later on, and some learn too late. We're just human beings.
Salute to Smush. As a Lakers fan I can say I enjoyed his time spent in a Lakers uniform regardless of his relationship with Kobe.
