If you are considering listening, I highly recommend this narration. It's intelligent and evocative without being histrionic. The reader takes guides you through the narrative but never becomes intrusive, allowing you to experience the story as your own. Really well done.
Norton Sega Hippie try Bite sized audiobooks, there are many ACD short stories on that channel & like this one the productions are first rate! This week I have listened to many Victorian era stories like this, including selections from ACD I never knew existed. I hope you enjoy them 😊
Well done! You've hit exactly the right note for one who mourns the loss of 53 years of constant, faithful friendship. My condolence is that my best loved friend was as weary of living as the principle in this story. My sorrow is that I'm left here alone to trudge the useless days until I am also released from the chains that bind me to life in this plane. May it be be sooner rather than later. Death is not the enemy. It is the end of pain and sorrow. 🥺
I remember reading this as a kid while visiting my grandfather. He had a wonderful old book of the collected works of A. Conan Doyle. Until then, I had never known of his writings beyond Sherlock Holmes. The Ring of Thoth was my favorite story in this collection, followed closely by Bones. Thank-you for this very enjoyable reading. It takes me back to that little kid sprawled out on the floor of Grandpa's house with this story at hand.
It's great to hear this Faith, because when I'm reading , I like to imagine I'm someone's grandfather or uncle telling the tale in an intimate way. E.E.F.
Thanks, GradKat. I became aware of this story after hearing a radio play (on Sirius XM Satellite channel 149-the old time radio channel) based on the story starring Jack Webb. Stay safe. E.E.F.
Wonderful story by Sir Arthur Canon Doyle. Excellent narration. As always by you Mr. French. Beautiful music by Erik Satie. All together a delightful way to bring the day to an end. Thank you.
Thank you. I discovered this story when I heard an old radio play adaptation on Sirius XM sattelite Old Time Radio channel. It's interesting how much it must influenced the old Boris Karloff Universal film "The Mummy." E.E.F.
I discovered this story on Sirius XM satellite "Old Time Radio." I can't recall if it was an episode of Suspense or Lights Out, but the radio dramatization starred Jack Webb. I was ignorant of its existence. I'm sure Conan Doyle's story was the basis of The Mummy starring Karloff. Thanks for listening and commenting, Jay.
sir, I have just re-listened to it. Your voice actually lulls the listener into a deep trance within Doyle's narrative with its tone. The natural gravity of your voice, your pacing and your understanding of the texture of the language and story, your performance is wonderful. And this story is genuinely great, genuinely haunting.....and you do it perfect justice
You're welcome. I had no idea this story existed until I heard a radio play adaptation of it on the Sirius XM Satellite "Old Time Radio" channel.....it obviously influenced the writers of Universal pictures old Karloff Mummy movie... I hope you will subscribe to the channel. Cheers. E.E.F.
edward french Wow you actually reply (best costumer service ever 👍). I already did subscribe and currently listening to H. G. Wells's "The Time Machine". My appreciation for all of your efforts (and mostly your precious time) you put into making this "audiobooks". Live Long and Prosper (mate)!
You have a most unique style Mr French which harks of old movie theatre horrors and things that go bump in the dark, thank you for the delightfully rich narration.
I appreciate that, Sir. I try to go bump in the night without bumping into the furniture. Do subscribe (if you haven't sone so) and join the F.F. Channel "evil army of the night!" Cheers! E.E.F.
I just found your channel! Excellent productions sir, your voice is both wonderfully calming & gives thrilling life to these stories 😊 Instantly subbed! Looking forward to exploring all you have posted & more to come. Thank you Edward, much appreciation from a happy listener in SW Missouri. Stay safe 😷
yes your narrative voice is as Good as amy I have heard on you tube. FANTASTIC so enjoyable and so well orally expresses ACD's written word. much thanks.
Thanks Howard! There's another Mummy story here on the channel written by Ed Wood (The Day the Mummy Returned) and this weekend I'll be adding a new mummy-themed tale entitled "They Bite." E.E.F.
There are a number of good readers/narrators on the UA-cam, but Edward French is excellent-upper-tier.... He'd be great, if The Man in Black ever is taken up, again....
Brilliant. Great story well narrated by Mr French. I think this is the basis of the 1932 movie 'The Mummy.' ua-cam.com/video/1i6xNScZRP4/v-deo.html This movie is much, MUCH better than modern 'The Mummy' movies. Deserves to be remade.
I discovered this story when I heard a radio play adaptation of it on Sirius XM satellite's old time radio channel 148. Prior to that I had no idea it existed or that Arthur Conan Doyle had written it. Karloff's The Mummy is obviously a hybrid of this story and Stoker's Dracula. Thanks for listening. I hope you subscribe to the channel and tell others about it. E.E.F.
An excellent and intriguing story. Though I must admit, the character of the British student could've used a bit more development by Doyle. He was perhaps just meant as a proxy for the reader to listen to the Egyptian's story. Still, superb work Mr. French.
You make a good point Cloudfx….When the original Karloff mummy movie was made they obviously used this Doyle's story as a reference but figured out how to dramatize it. E.E.F.

Exactly as it should be, i concur.
This narration is absolutely fantastic. Thanks for posting!
Been looking for more Arthur Conan Doyle's works like this charming story. Thanks Edward

At one level it is a rather sad love story about a couple who have to wait for what feels like an eternity to be reunited.
Does anyone know the name of the narator and of the background music in the beginning?
The narrator is your truly and the music is by Eric Satie.
@@FrenchEdward06 Thank you. I see your answer only now, after four years. You are a great narrator,. I've become a huge fan of your work.
The things we think about Egypt, are just wrong. Look at it with fresh eyes. 👵😁
he's just reading a story - not a historical thesis. LOL
