I remember this from 11th grade English. A funny story, my teacher, Mrs. Ashworth, when we were reviewing one line mentioning the quagmire (the swamp), she asked "What's a quagmire?". Then me and someone else started saying "Giggity, giggity, giggity", and Mrs. Ashworth said "NOT from Family Guy".
English and literature class always been my weakest subject when i was in school mainly because it never caught my interest. however my sophomore year when my class was on this story i actually enjoyed it. Every now and then i play the story again to bring back my high school memories. This was back in 2009.
Thank you Mr. French. I had no idea you would actually read a Washington Irving story when I suggest one on your last upload. Very well read, as usual. I am looking forward to your next.
It was an excellent suggestion Stutley-and now I have Washington Irving on the channel! Perfect story for Halloween and a timely commentary about our present U.S. economic woes...
A masterpiece beautifully presented by the reader, sounding a little like Vincent Price. Irving write three incredible short stories, masterpiece of early American literature. Rip Van Winkle, Devil and Tom Walker and his classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I have never seen this classic creepy tale, adapted into a n animated short, or television show. It should be done, needs to be done.
i know this story, yet you brought to life and made a new one. wonderful - as usual, many thanks. i'm glad you read an old classic instead of a "modern" one. Hope to hear more classics from 18th and 19th centuries. :) Keep safe.
🎃I must confess Mr. French, that this is my 10th time listening to this tale and I never get tired of it! You certainly are a FANTASTIC bard!! Thank you!! 🖖🎃
Bravo, Mr French! Masterfully done! This was a great story for the season. It doesn't get much better than Washington Irving in the month of October. I also have to say I really appreciate your title illustrations, and the author and narrator bios at the end of each story. Thank you for your work.
A subscriber to this channel suggested Irving and I realized immediately I had to record it. Irving's writing really lends itself to being spoken aloud and really stands the test of time. EEF
Thar's nice to hear, Yash. These days I post stories on an irregular basis. I hope you'll subscribe so that you can be alerted when a new narration arrives. Cheers. E.E.F.
I did subscribe sir. I should say I hv become a fan. I checked you have tons of videos, I m checking all out. I am an aspiring film maker studying literature. If you can recommend few favourite under-rated, not so well known writers in your favorite genres, I would love to check them out.(under rated since I have checked out most of the famous and pop writers)
Yash- This channel is my little "laboratory," you might say, where I discover "under-rated" or not-so-well-known works along with you and whoever's listening. These are all stories I want to tell. Stories previously unfamiliar to me. I'm more of a fantasy film buff, so I notice a lot of films were based on ideas, themes and narratives of these stories. Many of the later recordings are by authors I was completely unfamiliar with. Thanks for subscribing. E.E.F.
Who else is here because in the final episode of succession Tom mentions to Greg that he has made a deal with the devil (not with the siblings but with Logan, hence the fact that Logan already knew they were coming because Tom informed him) and this story is likely synonymous to what is going to happen in season 4
You have such a natural "voice" for narrating. I subbed and have listened to at least a dozen stories so far. I am a big Ray Bradbury fan -- so I welcome you to do more his works! Also a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft! As I am sure many others are. Well enough of making suggestions, lol! Keep up the great work!
Offshore- The process of creating the audio varies from author to author. The Devil and Tom Walker took about 4 days. I read/rehearse, make notes on the I-pad I read from and research unfamiliar words during this stage. On this one, I recorded it twice and then cut it together with the best "takes" from each session. I spend as little time as I have to wrapping the final audio narration up with a bow in the visual "titles"/credits material. Sound effects and music are a last and least important consideration. If I can't come up with something that works to enhance and not distract from the story in an hour then I won't use anything. I think I lucked out with the music for D&TW with the early American period piece "Captain Kidd." Cheers. E.E.F.
Dear Offshore and Mr. French, thank you first to Mr. French for the phenomenal quality of your productions, and to Offshore second for asking Mr. French about his process and the time required. Thirdly, another thank you to Mr. French for the insightful reply. I speak to others of your recordings and the artwork you produce with high praise, and of your generous spirit, too.
Excuse me, Mr.French, do you solely read and present short stories, or, would you consider reading an entire novel and posting one chapter at a time, almost like a series of short stories? I ask, because, there's a wonderful series by R.A. Salvatore called 'The Dark Elf Trilogy', telling of the life of Drizzt Do'Urden, and it'd be great to hear you read it. I have subscribed to your channel, not as "I've subscribed so do as I say", or something ridiculous... just so I can listen to more of your readings, and in the event you DO read The Dark Elf Trilogy, I can be notified. If you don't want to post the reading of it tho, I do still very highly recommend it as a personal read for yourself. It's an incredibly awesome book...

But fr, what is a quagmire
@@Not-A-Content-Creator It's pretty much a wet, boggy area of land.
@@TheNWClassA1218 giggity 😏
Our class did the same for our 11th grade American Lit class, but it was "Dicky Moe" at the beginning of Moby Dick.
@@observationsfromthebunker9639 Well, now I will search for "Dicky Moe" on-line ---- cautiously.

Lol high school back in 2009, damn I got depressed....I was in high school back in '69
This is an absolutely phenomenal reading of a wonderful story.
I love this story. Wonderful, spirited reading. Thank you.
When listening to your narration I am reminded of Vincent Price. Perfect for such a story. Thank you for reading this.
i love that this is a scary story about greed and speculation. We should really bring these back.
I am here of my own free will, because I love a good story very well read....!
Fascinating story and told in a natural way. It's more interesting when I'm not staring at the same picture but at the images behind my closed eyes.
THAT's the idea , James . Cheers. E.E.F.
Read this in high school and it has stayed as one of my favorite pieces of literature since.
The best narrator of all time! Thank you Mr. French!
How can I argue with your review? Thank you. I'll admit to "A" for effort......E.E.F.
A wonderful tale, Beautifully read.

Totally enjoyable narration & story. Thank you.
Exceptional reading. Irving would be grateful. And yes, a welcome hint of Vincent Price. And hint is enough.
Thanks, @joeharoutunian1805. I appreciate your kind words. Irving is a fun author to read aloud. E.E.F.
Excellent. Thank you.

I enjoyed this reading. I had to read this for my English class, and it was quite enjoyable to hear you read. Thank you
Thank YOU for listening, Gavin. Nice to know I could help a student with his homework. E.E.F.
The visual connection between chopping down trees and collecting souls for the fire impresses me.

I wish they would make a movie and have it directed by someone like Tim burton like They did with sleep y hollow only more true to the source.

I wonder how many hours go into these narrations, to make them sound as easy and natural as they do?
Many thanks.

Washington Irving, the first great American storyteller. Nathaniel Hawthorne was the other though his stories weren't so whimsical. Then came Mr. Poe😱
Tremendous! 😊
Great bedtime story
Well done Mr. French
Excellent narrative.
