  • Seems like all these PT Cruisers have problems with their cooling fans... Just about as common as them blowing out lower control arm bushings....
Vehicle came in with no Air Conditioning. Found the compressor was leaking out of the high pressure relief valve. After replacing the compressor I went to verify operation and ensure pressures were within spec. High pressure was going way too high. Upon further inspection noticed the fan was not spinning then diagnosed the fan operation.

Great video, this perfectly describes the proplem I was having with my ’03. Not overheating, no codes just no cold A/C. I also ran 12v to the fan connector, volt meter to the car side. No low speed fan but power from the car side. now I know I need a new fan.

Awesome video from a great Service Tech. I only wish he was closer to New Orleans. Never had trouble with the AC on either my PT Limited or PT GT turbo, but cooling fans, yes. They do not have the engine ventilation needed. Keystone used to make Ram Air hoods and that was great. No longer available. Heat shielding is a hassle and unsightly in this tight engine compartment. So, check your cooling fans, trans cooler, intercooler, radiator, etc.

Should the ECM throw out a code regarding the fan fault?

Not on these because the fault was with the low speed winding inside the fan was blown high resistance. If you have a control fault such as a bad relay then you might get a code but otherwise they don't check current or anything like that.
