The origins of the house music scene in Chicago can be traced back to the early 1980s, a time when musical innovation, social change, and experimentation came together in the city’s underground clubs. House music, which would later become a global phenomenon, began in Chicago and rapidly spread worldwide. This story is rooted in the decline of disco, which had been a dominant force in dance music during the late 1970s, but was eventually met with backlash and a shift in the musical landscape.
As disco faded, a new breed of DJs in Chicago, including figures like Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, and Larry Levan, began experimenting with sound, blending elements of disco, funk, soul, and electronic music. They started using drum machines, synthesizers, and other electronic instruments, creating a unique, rhythmic sound that set the stage for house music. This shift was particularly significant in clubs where DJs could play longer sets, allowing them to experiment with transitions, loops, and layered beats in ways that hadn’t been done before.
One of the most iconic venues in the early Chicago house scene was The Warehouse, a club where Frankie Knuckles was the resident DJ. It was here that house music truly began to take shape. The name "house" is said to have originated from the club itself, with patrons referring to the music played there as "house" after the venue. Knuckles, known as the "Godfather of House Music," pioneered the use of drum machines like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909, which produced a deep, mechanical beat that became synonymous with the genre.
Alongside Knuckles, other pioneering DJs and producers like Marshall Jefferson, Jesse Saunders, and Chip E. helped refine the sound. They combined the soulful elements of disco with more electronic and experimental techniques, crafting a danceable, repetitive, and uplifting sound that energized the dancefloor. This new style of music fostered a sense of community among dancers, DJs, and producers, uniting them through the collective experience of music and self-expression.
House music quickly spread beyond Chicago, influencing scenes in cities like New York and Detroit, and soon became a global cultural movement. In Chicago, it became not only a form of musical expression but also a reflection of the social and political landscape. Many of the early house artists came from Afro-American and LGBTQ+ communities, which had long been marginalized. House music provided an outlet for those communities to express their identities, desires, and struggles.
As the genre evolved, subgenres like acid house, deep house, and progressive house began to emerge, expanding house music’s influence across the globe. However, the foundation of house music remains rooted in Chicago’s early underground scene. It was here, in the dimly lit clubs and through the hands of visionary DJs, that the groundwork was laid for one of the most influential music movements of the late 20th century.
Man if house music don’t set your soul free then you ain’t living
only true househeads can understand, in the Chi we love our house, one nation under groove

I remember remember Chicago House hit the UK. It was mental, we loved it. It evolved and we developed our own sounds but this is where it started. So many great nights, thank you Chicago.
This video is a hidden gem. I love how they're just enjoying that moment right then and there, most likely spontaneously.

Thanks Coco
Dude forgot he needed a cane when he heard that house music! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🕺🏽💃🕺🏽💃🥰🥰🥰
Chicago house was where it all began! Early 1989 - 1990 it was brought to the UK 🇬🇧 and this was then slightly speeded up with breakbeat added into the mix, giving it the name Rave, Hardcore. This is the root's right here!
Trax records 1986 needs to tech you something
@Blue Skies Media depends how you define rave. Shoom in London was a club night that was running in 87. The acid house scene of free parties emerged from there.
I'm always amazed when I remember house and techno got started in Chicago. Fell off here in the US but exploded in Europe.
techno started in detroit
Bros, it started all over the place. It really took of with the availability of new technologies & sounds, and those were available everywhere in the western world pretty much & people were influencing one another around the world..
So true. but everything is falling off in this country except plastic surgery 🤣
Get it . Werk it werk it wepaaaa

House music all life long....i've been blessed to have experienced 3 of the most influential genres of music...disco, hip hop and House music....the last 2 from their infancy till now...but my one love until the day i die is House music....i'm just about to turn 57 and it's in my will already, when i die i don't want no sorry ass death music, they are told to play my dj mixes from 1980 and on...we havin' us a fare-well party alright ....but it's gonna be a mofo dance party non the less...i wish i could see the faces of the funeral directors when they hear marshall jefferson's House Music anthem pumpin' in that parlor...hahaha....my playlist 1. The House music anthem 2. The whistle song Fk 3. 808 state pacific 4. Sueno latino 5. Expansions lonnie liston smith...then the dj can play whatever tf he wants...
I hear ya, that's exactly what I told my family have me a big ass old school house daytimer and make sure it's on a school day. Those were the happiest times of my life and I'll need 1 more before I leave.
I’m right with you 57 myself, and love all 3 disco, hip hop and house. And your funeral idea is 🔥🔥🔥. In fact I think I’ll hop on the wheels and my own “celebration of life” mix with all my favorite cuts! You inspired me! 😊
808 state pacific is best or in your face 808 state
"give me house music all night long"
Your funeral sounds like a blast. Let us know when you start feeling funny 😂

I live in SE Wisconsin as have my whole life. I’m 61 yrs old now. Used to go to night clubs in Chicago on the weekends and dance till sunrise. It was kicking back in the 70’s and 80’s BIG TIME with Julian jumping Perez, Bad Boy Bill, Tim Spinning Schomer, Brian Middleton and the list goes on with the great DJS….. I still love house music to the max….it never ever gets old. Got me a big stereo system in my small car now and just blast this house right up to this day still. Nothing better than cruising around with the beats rattling your insides with the boom boom boom yesssssssss…. enjoy life to the fullest cause we’re only here for a short time everybody ya never know what tomorrow may bring upon us….dance until ya drop !!!!
Man hear and dance house music,
man is happy.

The originals
When I tell you that they look good to still be able to move like that let me give you some context. They're dancing to songs that came out almost 40 years ago. If they are able to still feel it that way imagine how they would have been moving in 1986!
you got links to any of these songs?? they are bangers
Pure grooving and 2 steps
So cool. Still have 80s 90s vinyl. Still the best. Today’s music sucks
This video is so raw. A good part of history.
i come back to this video every now and again, i hope everyone in the vid are still well and dancing
Thank you, i lost my friend who made the music from her car
@JeroenBohlken I am sorry to hear that. My she rest in peace. Much love.
Chip E!!! Ultimate House groove right here...... shout out to the Chi for giving us House Music!
THIS is what it’s all about. Don’t need a fancy crazy expensive dance studio with mirrors and polished wood floor. Don’t need a million dollar sound system (it helps ;) ) to get down and have a good time. Takin it to the streets with some friends is all it takes!
Nothing beats Chicago house
Nothing…….
