- Hey friends!!! Yay to passing my first round of exams and being energized by bad bunny lol. My plants in pon have seriously been making me so happy! I'm not sure what it is about this medium that the plants seem to be enjoying so much, but it really seems to be making a difference. I'll hopefully have some future updates, but most of these have been in the substrate for about a month now. Have you guys tried pon!? What do you think? I really enjoyed your video. I recently started using Lechuza Pon and I mix it with stuff like coco coir, orchid bark, sand, soil and so on depending on the plant I want to pot up. If you are using the brand pon from Lechuza it already comes with slow release fertiliser so you won’t have to add nutritions for a few months.
I found that it’s also great for succulents and cacti in combination with terracotta pots!
I also had success using pon for rooting begonias, lipstick plants and Hoya (with reservoir) and I have a ctenante that’s happily sitting in a jar with pure pon and a water reservoir.
I think I got a Hoya cutting in pon! And honestly it’s genius! It’s soooo airyyyy and even though it did not retain water while the plant was in the mail, the plant came so perfectly and no root rot!
One of my plants from poland came in PON and it was the fastest to recover from postage and pushed out the most gorgeous new leaf after about 2 weeks! I think this might've convinced me to look into making my own

Hi Lessya! I think I might have commented this on your other vid but I've had good success with Bonsai Jack's inorganic bonsai blend. Also just rocks. You might notice next time you repot that your roots are probably growing like crazy. There's something about being in rocks that makes their roots go crazy! ♥️ And I agree... Knocking over a pot in pon is the woooooorst 😂 I'm out of bonsai blend so when I drop one I have to sit there and pick all the rocks up 😂

I make my own soil free mix too! If you can’t be bothered to measure PH, try using Kanuma soil instead of lava rocks✨It’s a Japanese soil, frequently used for bonsai and cactus, but it turns the soil ph slightly acidic, which most of my philodendrons and anthuriums and hoyas are absolutely loving!! 🥰
Also, the kanuma soil (more like rocks) are orangey yellow when wet and light yellow when dry, so it’s super easy to tell when it’s dry 🌵💕

Great video! Recently, I saw a video using the same technique with Leca, without the reservoir, just watering once a week with nutrients. I’m very curious but the price is definitely a con! However, I want it!!! Nooooo 😂😂😂
I’ve heard some people do this with leca too!! I do feel like it would dry out a whole lot faster though! And pon is prettier 😅😅😂😂 💚💚

Hey Lessya! Great video! Who do you water your plants in pon? Do you leave water on the bottom of the cache pot? Or can you just water the plant from the top, as the plants in 'normal' soil?
I made my own and it doesn't compare to Lechuza, the secret is the size of the rocks. I purchased my first bag and my goodness that stuff is bomb!
I just got a couple litres of pon to try from a friend so just starting to try it out. I’m curious for the “homemade” you mentioned you ad nutrients, what nutrients do you use? I generally use LiquiDirt for my plants that are in soil, would that work for the ones in pon as well?

Yep! I'm switching pretty much everything to pon after witnessing my antherium warcoqueanum doing better.
I also add Nutricote (9 mo slow release) highly recommend by local nursery specialize exotic plants (Flori-Culture: Jonathan has an amazing collection of hoyas, aroids etc, hoya online store few years back?) He said "sprinkle Nutricote like salt and pepper, it's really hard to overdose it." From March to September, I give all plants 1/4 dose liquid fertilizer on top of Nutricote at every watering.

Hi, do u think lava rock is similar to scoria as I live in New Zealand and can’t find anything labelled lava rock. I have found zeolite and pumice but can’t figure out what to put for the lava rock. Your help will be appreciated. Thanks 😊

With orchids you can do a flush with water that has Epsom salts in it. One teaspoon of Epsom salts per gallon of water. So you have like a bucket of Epsom salts water and you just pulled over and over and over with a little cup over your media it will help flush out any excess salt from fertilizer off of the media it works with and I think it would probably work over this inorganic media that you're using. I learned how to do that on a channel called Ed's orchids. He's the kind Old Gentleman and England that I've also learned a lot from that normally helps me grow my orchids but it helps we understand how to help my house plants and my Hoya plants be taking care of better...
Will you transition all your plants or just the hoya? I have some large snasavaria that are in leca and it's gonna be so $$$ to switch to pon.
can you give me advise on how you root hoya cuttings in PON please!!! do you leave a reservoir? to you keep PON constantly moist?
With my hoya cuttings in pon I do it both ways. If its a thicker "harder" stem leaves I don't use reservoir. The more "delicate stems & leaves i use a reservoir. I hope that makes sense!
I see that some of your plants in lechuza have a water reservoir, are you leaving a 1/3 reservoir?

I have repotted 80 plants so far, in the past two weeks. I was using what I though was a chunky, airy mix, but I found compacting and some plants giving me problems. I'm moving everything into a course coco coir with chips, sphagnum, and perlite mixture. Ferns, hoya, aroids, begonias, and more, are responding well. No more soil for me.
Could you please share the recepy of your mixture? I am thinking of replanting an aglaonema and alocasias. Thanks!
@@annakahne1403 I'm using about a 1/3 of each and I'm getting a good response. For succulents, I'm using half coco coir and half perlite. You can adjust to the needs of particular plants, of course.

This is a thought as I'm watching your Rio philodendron in your media... I wonder what would happen if you put a few pinches or maybe just a pinch osmocote in with that along with a pinch of pelleted lime. I know one of the people I watch on UA-cam about orchids and that channel is Rick's orchids who wrote to the better bow people who make fertilizer and also sell orchids in those bags at Lowe's and other Nursery places about how they Supply calcium to orchids. Orchids are calcium hugs and I'm wondering if the same goes for Hoya since they're both epiphytes... The better grow people told him that they use pelleted lime to supply the calcium the plants. For some reason you can't put calcium in with the various fertilizers because the mix would be unstable or something. So maybe he is also were calcium Hogs... Rick said he adds a few sprinkles on top of his media which or just plain old rocks lava rocks River Rocks limestone rocks Etc... Once a month or so. It does dissolve as you water but there's always a little bit of calcium there and calcium is needed by every growing cell in a plant... And it just dawned on me watching your video that I need to also put this pelleted lime on my Hoyas and see if there's better growth. I also use on my orchids seaweed Emulsion fertilizer which has hormones in but help a plant grow new leaves new roots and new flowers. It's added to my nutrient solution that my orchids in their clay pots and bark soaking for half an hour or so in my big plastic totes. I water my orchids every week to two weeks this way. Any leftover nutrient solution I put on my other plants. The orchids take out whatever they need. My nutrient mix has Cal Mag which is the brand name of Cal magic... This is calcium and magnesium period. It's out at first then I put in the seaweed Emulsion fertilizer a micronutrient supplement... Some kind of orchid fertilizer sometimes with the first number nitrogen higher sometimes with the middle number higher and sometimes with the third number higher... I alternate this... And I also add most feedings one teaspoon of Epsom salts with one gallon of water. Epsom salt is magnesium and sulfur. And if you have trouble with thrips on any plant the sulfur in the Epsom salts will kill them. Sulfur was used a long time ago more often then now to get rid of insects in Gardens. So if you supplement in your nutrient solution when you water your plants does sulfur helps cut down on the insect population or Keeps it from becoming a problem before you realize you have them! Magnesium is needed for chlorophyll production and it also helps leaves to have a natural Sheen to them. Sorry this is such a long comment but I use the microphone on my cell phone keyboard so it's easy to talk and let my phone to the typing! It's like I'm sitting having the conversation even though it's one way with you about what I'm thinking about is I watch your video. I hope my rambling helps in some way everyone to grow better plants I love your videos

You dont have to remove all the soil thats the beauty of it! but you do try to remove as much of it as you can
Hi there, i have moved my Monstera into Lechuza Pon 6 months ago and it is triving. I have made lots of research and all the experts said: wash the root out as much as you can so there is no more organic material. Lechusa does save moisture, so to avoid root rot you should remove as much of it as you can. It is not easy to do with larger plants. But it worked very well. What i do is to grab the entire plant and shake and touch the roots very gently grabbing the soil in between the roots with your fingers. Once the largest chunks are off, put it under a medium strong stream of water and continue. After 10 min or so you will see that the roots are becoming clean and white. Let them air dry a bit before putting them into pon. I am extremely happy with the result. I water my monstera once a week (winter) and it is really thriving and growing despite the dormant period.
I purchased Hoya cuttings from Facebook marketplace. The peices were so short they were falling out of pot. One had a node . Just purchased from mercari I hope this one is better.
I never recommend buying from fb market place or mercari! When I say to buy on Facebook, I mean Hoya Facebook groups, marketplace seems to upcharge for plants found locally. But hopefully your new plant gets to you healthy and happy!

I’ve seen other plantubers use Leca instead of PON in their Lechuza pots. My problem is that there is extremely limited availability to lechuza products where I live, in Australia.

Its easy to diy! Ingredients are linked in description but I would think in Australia you could buy online as well!
Amazon sells Lechuza-Pon all the time that’s where I ordered mine from and they’re pretty big I don’t see them selling out

I’d say a lot!! I havent really made a dent in the lava rock or pumice and have potted about 20 4in/2in plants in it 💚

@@plantingitreal Depending on the brand but typically no. I’m paranoid so I rinse a few times with water and spray hydrogen perodixe and/or alcohol diluted . If that makes sense.

Maybe one last thing teehee can't guarantee this will be my last comment... But pumice and lava rock are both from volcanic action and there are many many airspaces some microscopic in these rocks that help to hold water and there are also probably micronutrients that we don't even realize that are available for the roots. So besides those little air pockets holding water they also hold oxygen that's available for the roots.

There are more minerals in PON than Leca.
You lost me at "Removing harsh minerals". That is just impossible, at least not for the lifetime of the substrate: all of these rocks do is hold moisture and house beneficial bacteria on the surface

@@LessyasLeaves Very good to hear. In PA, Fungus Gnats have been so bad outside. I saw a few come in through the screens, but made sure they did not "move into" my plants.
