    Nah, mate, you can't just assert your way is better without providing info in support.
    If your assertion were correct hook manufacturers would bend the eye inward toward the point of the hook. They don't; they either have the eye inline with the shank, or they bend it outward away from the point for snelling. This indicates that the intent is for the line to run parallel to the shank, not at an angle.

    Excellent instructions I've tried a loop knot, a snell knot and a polymer knot then drop the hook into a coffee cup and pull out, there's times the hook catches and times it won't.
    Once I made sure the curve of the leader line was going in the same direction as the curve in the hook problem solved. This is best instruction video I've seen on attaching a circle hook (straight shank no bend at the eye) to a leader line. I've given a 👍 up and subscribed I'll have to look at your other videos to see what other tips you have up your sleeve. Thanks for your help and being willing to share

    The hook you are using in this video isn't designed to be used with snell knots as it has a straight eyelet, circle hook or not. You should be using just a fisherman's knot or equivalent for that hook. Circle hooks where the eyelet is bent slightly backwards (e.g. gamakatsu octopus circle hooks) are designed specifically for snell knots. A snell knot is just a more secure knot which is why hooks are designed for them. A snell knot shouldn't be used to roll the hook up...that's the job of the hook itself. If you use a snell on the hook in this video, it will cause the hook to roll forward too much, resulting in a much lower hookup rate.

      I think you may be mistaken. The way this is tied (line fed from back of hook above this egg loop or a snell thru eye toward hook bend (inside of hook) will bring the hook point forward pushing it into whatever it contacts

    Bang on. The knot you used is called snelling. You can also.use a loop. But you are right never tie a knot direct to the hook
    Another mistake people make is using braid and striking. Mono is best for bottom fishing with these hooks. Great video mate

    • @PracticeMakesPaper

      You can use Braid.. Just make sure your drag is loose and use mono or fluoro as a leader..
      I think Braid is a must-have when your fishing around structure; to pull them out of structure when their hooked.. big fish is taking you into the rocks everytime w/ mono only

    only thing i hate about snail knots is that you need to cut a new section of leader if you lose a hook instead of using a regular knot to put on a hook on the end of your leader so now you have to cut everything off and re tie twice but this is def worth it and needed for this kind of hook

      I agree, we use circle hooks for sturgeon hear in southern British Columbia where you are sitting for extended periods of time with the rod in a holder or holding it yourself. Secret is you do not set the hook until the fish commits to eating the bait. Sturgeon bite real soft for a fish that often exceed 9 feet in length here on the Fraser river. You have to hold off the hook set until you feel that constant pull on the line, leave the little tugs alone. I fish for salmon with them as well, same idea, let the fish play with the lure till it is a constant pull, then set. They are the best for catch n release.

    What if the circle hooks eye is bent back instead of straight like yours? The ones with bent eye won't angle the hook toward the line but keeps the hook straight with the line. Are they less effective? It just seems like the bent eye is more popular than straight eye.

    It's called snelling a hook

    • @TheIconicFisherman
      @TheIconicFisherman Рік тому +1

      Not in all cases actually, yes snelling a hook is good for bent eye octopus circle hooks because that's what those are designed for. But the straight shank straight eye circle hooks actually have a better hookup ratio with either a loop knot or an improved clinch knot. And this is simply due to the mechanics of how a snell knot actually works in the first place. I actually prefer using either a loop knot or a regular knot so I go with the straight shank straight eye circle hooks instead.

    • @Lanny-io9bi

      @@TheIconicFishermanI see both sides of the debate and I use straight shank circle hooks always for catfishing and I always snell the hook and never had any problems really, but I do need to try different knot's and see what all works for myself.. plus it gives me a reason to sneak away from the family to go fishing and test knot's 😂

    • @TheIconicFisherman
      @TheIconicFisherman Рік тому

      @@Lanny-io9bi I'm not saying it won't work if you use a snell knot on a straight shank circle hook I'm just saying that the hookup ratio won't be as good as if you use the proper knot for each type of eyelet and shank design. And Snell knots were originally intended for down eyed bent shank hooks and if you look at it from a mechanical engineering perspective it actually makes sense why that is.
      Because when you use the snell knot on a straight shank hook, the hook actually has to bend farther before it is even able to set itself in the corner of the fish's mouth due to how the line protrudes from the eye of the hook on a straight shank hook. That's why when you look at those cheap pre-snelled hooks that they sell at the store they always have a bent eye on them regardless of what type of hook it is.

      You tie this on as a leader. Then tie the open end to the line on the reel - usually to some type of terminal hardware.

      @@rockyslay4310 u can. Get tag end put through eye, get tag end again and put through eye again forming a loop.
      Tricky bit.. Grab the loop that comes from the tag end and wrap it around the shank and tag end 6 times then pull on main line and tag end to singe it down. If u cant singe it down that means u grabed the loop from the mainline instead of the tag end.
      But hard to explain but if u have the knot buzzy had shown u. If u can unravel the knot without taking the ends out of the eye u will understand how it works.

Is that you don't set the hook. Let the fish swim away with it. Then slowly tighten the line then reel them in. Again read the directions.
