"Sorrow" Written by singer and guitarist David Gilmour, it is the closing track on their thirteenth studio album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason, released in 1987
Drummer Nick Mason has since stated that the song was almost entirely written by David Gilmour alone over the space of one weekend on his houseboat Astoria. When he returned from the weekend, only "some spit and polish", according to Mason, was needed. Gilmour has also mentioned that the solo at the end of "Sorrow" was done on the boat, his guitar going through a small Gallien-Krueger amplifier.
Sorrow was a poem I'd written as a lyric before I wrote music to it, which is rare for me.
- David Gilmour

I saw the Pulse concert live in 1994. Lots of people claim that Pink Floyd was at there peak during the Wall. They must have not seen Pulse! I didn’t miss Waters at all! If Richard Wright hadn’t got sick with cancer and passed away, there is no telling what we could have seen. To me, Pulse was Pink Floyd’s peak. So many good songs added to their catalog with early Waters songs. Songs we might have not had if Waters had stayed with the band. Sorrow, Coming Back To Life, On The Turning Away, Poles Apart, High Hopes and Learning To Fly just to name a few.
You was sooo lucky to be there
im kinda torn. this era of floyd was fantastic. I had seen them in 88 and 84 got to see roger in the 90's and the wall 2010's. Ive always wonderd what floyd would have truely sounded like had it not self destructed.. my childhood was floyd. i always wished i was born sooner than 74
i was there too you are totally right
@@sonus289: Don’t know what planet you are from, but Pink Floyd never self destructed. Roger Waters left the band. But the band kept on going without Waters and never really missed a beat. They released some very successful albums without Waters and sold out concert events everywhere they went. Arenas and stadiums. Pink Floyd disbanded upon Richard Wright’s death. Most of us real fans never missed Waters. I think ol Roger got an unpleasant surprise. He assumed that the band would die off at his departure. I think he grossly underestimated Dave, Richard and Nick. And the fans. Roger left on his own accord and got quite pissy after the band carried on without him. Kind of bruised his massive ego! Roger should have remembered that they also carried on with Syd. Who was at the time, the bands primary song writer, vocalist and guitarist. Yet the band flourished without Syd Barrett. Pink Floyd proved they could survive and be successful without Roger Waters.
The greatest show on planet Earth, how I wish I could be there to witness history. Amazing performance, out of this world!
bassist Guy Pratt never gets a mention so here it is, what a fantastic bassist he is, massive credit to him.
Estoy de acuerdo
That is why both Nick Mason and Gilmour still work with him! Legend.
Me encanta x q se recopa Guy muy buen bajista 💕💞🌹😁
Did he help with songwriting at all after waters left?
@@josephjohnson5056 If you count-in creating new music with Floyd. Yes both in the studio and live, which is also a part of songwriting.
In the sense of lyrics, maybe but it's not registered as such.
David Gilmour is the greatest and most humble guitarist ever. His guitar does the talking.
Bruce Springsteen one of the best. Gary Moore. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Slash to mention a few. Gilmorton was great Roger waters made him

Pink Floyd always had 2 lead singers. David Gilmour and David Gilmour’s guitar.💕
Right....
Well Roger Waters and Rick Wright sang a lot too, but David Gilmour and David’s guitar make 4. 😀 I actually felt bad that I left them out. 🙁 I read somewhere that Nick Mason the drummer never sang one note ever.

It takes an entire band to create a masterpiece of music such as Sorrow, not just Gilmour, or Watters, or Wright, but all of them. I can never get enough of Pink Floyd!!!
Roger Waters had nothing to do with the studio or live version of this song. He was long gone my friend.

God bless Gilmour. Absolutely unique
Yes. And the song "On the Turning Away." Hands down two of the 3 most beautiful songs of the Gilmour era ("High Hopes") completing the troika. My fave era of the PF.
What he did to it on Pulse is beyond words. The original doesn’t do it justice like this does.
Most underrated Gilmour's solo right here people. What a masterpiece.

FUN WATCHING HIM
Agree with that !!
You 🙏 right on this one, this song is on top of all PF SONGS RECORDED ON PLASTIC than comes the rest ones
So true.. masterpiece!!
The only negative I have to say about this, is that it ends.
A masterclass from a group of exceptionally gifted musicians.

You can thank me later. I've been listening to most PF songs this way nowadays. No ads, no crazy autoplay to some weird videos that for some reason YT finds similar to Gilmour, no awkward silences. Just the soul within the notes of the greatest band ever.
I hate endings to incredible things!
"And there is a silence that speaks much louder than words of promises broken". -That line get's me every time, I can't help but tear up.
The lyrics are truly powerful and sad.. the chasm between Waters and Gilmour.. ☹️

Well done Mr. Mason...you are truly a legend and you are amasing..
I believe David had said that the drum track was recorded from a track machine as you can see it take two percussion set to perform
Also underrated, GREAT drummer
David’s playing is just unmatchable. The little leading and trailing notes, the phrasing, tremolo..just so much going on. No one else plays like that.
Watch some vids of Hank Marvin and The Shadows, the guy who in Gilmours own words, inspired him to learn to play.

Best song of the Gilmour Era hands down!
i agree, like it more than Numb....i can hear the Hendrix influence in some parts
Mine too. The Pulse version is my favourite song
O yes Iam no Enghis - Inglés si entiendo está excelente
David himself is very proud of this song, as he has mentioned over the years. Both the words and the music, came to him in what he admits was one of his more auspicious moments of inspiration.
The Pompeii version has an amazing section near the end, in the jam.
If this is the last thing I hear as my soul soars away from my body, I’ll consider my life complete. Just keep that final solo going, David.
If only we could arrange that for our final breath...
Well said, exactly!
me too bro... me too... Aye . I am about ready to go and, I concur, this, this wil do.
When Floyd snobs make statements that they were finished because "Roger left" I know I don't have to listen to anything else they have to spout on about because THIS exists, and it's sublime.
Never ending. Continue vibrating my brain after 55 yrs…🦚🌏🍻🩷🩷🩷Floyd

David Gilmour's bendings are works of art, nobody can play like that absolute precision, outstanding guitarist.

I don't know how someone I've never met could describe everything I've been through so eloquently. He's connected to the cosmic stream at a very deep level. A beautiful man. Comfortably Numb and Sorrow tell it completely and are my favorite songs . Long live the king.
A while back I heard his ex-wife Ginger recounting a story of how she was lying in bed with him one time, and he suddenly morphed into Jesus (he was asleep at the time) - ordinarily I'd be sceptical about a story like that, but where David Gilmour's concerned it seems completely plausible :-)

He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise

His knees have trembled and given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered
One world, one soul
Time pass, the river roll
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be

And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder than words
Of promises broken
