Have had similar problems -- in both a Jeep and in a Ford Van. Tip to add to your kit of solutions: After you have cleaned the contact surfaces, coat them lightly with "DeOx" -- which is a product used in the electrical industry for stopping bi-metallic junctions from corroding. Note: I am being VERY specific about the product name; there are other products (NoAlox, and similar alternatives); but, in my experience, DeOx is the only "electrical" product with a high enough "tack" and viscosity, as well as thermal resistance, to work reliably in automotive applications. That said, it works VERY well. I typically use it on Battery Terminals as well. If I couple a good cleaning (I use an old Lisle Post & Terminal cleaner that makes the surfaces mate *perfectly* to each other) with a liberal coating of DeOx on every mating and exposed surface, plus stainless steel bolts and an external cutoff switch, I don't have to touch the terminals again (for cleaning, anyway) for the life of the battery. I presently have one vehicle battery pushing 15 years, and two at 12+ years, with no maintenance other than keeping the water levels right. Again, this only works reliably with DeOx -- everything else I've tried (particularly under the hood) "runs off" when it gets warn. My $0.02 worth (and that's inflation :-) )
You just made my day. I bought a 91 with the same problem and the same fix. I was troubleshooting the wires and was worried about driving it blind (without gauges to show temp and gas level ect... your vid showed me the way. Thanks so much.
This was my exact problem, when I swapped wiring harnesses, in order to add power windows. The incoming harness had been left in moist conditions. Used a fuse that lights up in case of a short. Helped a bunch, to identify the culprit. Damned #9.
Thanks for the tip, that's exactly what was wrong with my jeep.. problem just showed up this morning. Pulled the fuse out cleaned it stuck it back in and it worked
I’ve been having an issue with my speedometer, and this video does give me some ideas. I did replace the speed sensor or wiring, but not all the wiring. Thanks for posting this one. Hopefully I can figure this out.
I appreciate it, I finally got my XJ guages working again... Turns out the 7.5 fuse was blown after all way down in the corner after checking for the 4th time 🤦♂️if only I had realized that 2 days ago lol
Thanks for the tips. Need to pull my 91 yj centre cluster out, as the only thing that works properly is the clock. Fuel gauge reads accurately, until you turn the engine on, then it jumps up 1/4 tank higher. The oil pressure, engine temp do nothing, and the voltmeter needle constantly vibrates at +/- 14 volts.
Wow.. thanks for posting you kept me from doing all the work you just did and went strait to number 9 and it was the same thing as yours now my 93 had all working gauges
My '95 YJ keeps blowing that fuse, but only when I go in reverse... It is manual. I can't find the forum link, but someone had said that they had the same issue. The reverse light pulls a bit of power, and it blew their fuse as well. They said it was likely a ground wire.... I'm going to trace my wires as soon as i spray off the dirt.
Replaced cluster (plastic sheet with copper guides) and cleaned all connections. When opened switch all gauges went 100 and over but temp. Voltage? Over 100%, oil pressure? Same, gas? Same... Didn't even cranked the engine and all gauges but Temp went crazy! Any thoughts?
Since the #9 cavity is different on most vehicles and what circuit that 15 amp fuse protects was not mentioned in your video, it would have been more helpful if you described what circuit that 15 amp fuse protects versus it's cavity # inside the fuse block ??? Eric
My Temp and oil pressure gauges just stopped working. All the lights and all the other gauges are fine. Any suggestions? I just put a new circuit board in it as well as new bulbs while I had it apart.
I am considering buying a 1998 Jeep XJ model and was told the gauges work about 30% of the time. Was your problem intermittent? Would you know if XJ models have this issue also? I need to determine whether the Jeep is worth buying with a similar easy fix issue or is the Jeep going to need a more involved repair. Anything you can share would be very helpful. Thanks. Phil
I've been pulling my hair out. My #9 fuse has blown and I have a dead short somewhere on my '93 YJ on that circuit. The bad thing is, according to the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, the supply coming from the #9 goes to a splice with eight other circuits. I have worked on it for days trying to find the shorted wire and have no joy. Any advice to try and find the short circuit?
Great video. Any directions for the installation on the steering wheel horn retainer plate assembly for a 1994 Jeep Wrangler. I cannot locate directions.
I have a 92 YJ and my speedometer , odometer , and fuel gauge doesn't work, all my other gauges work perfectly. Any idea what that could be? I have not tried any thing to fix it but I will try all of these methods when I get off today. Thanks for the video
Had the same issue intermittently on my 01 Cherokee. It turned out to be a sloppy ignition switch due to too much weight on key ring. As it turns out, your key controls the dash guages and if it's loose in the ignition, you could encounter this problem
Finally after years of intermittent gauges off on in my 1998 TJ Sport, that I fixed by flicking o/ off high beams, they stopped working. The dash lights and lighted signals/odometer work, just not the gauges, checked fuses appeared ok, switched out a 10 amps looks OK. Using gauge diagnostic check with odometer button press...., the dam gauges responded!. but nothing when key is turnsed on. So I assume gauge cluster OK. Pulled out cluster added dielectric grease on couplers, still nothing. There appears to be a short, or something with a coupler,,,,any ideas how to fix? desperate in Tampa
Oh man, sorry, but sounds like electrical gremlin. Can be a nightmare. You're checking all the right things. I'd just keep following wiring, looking for short. Sounds like guage cluster is ok.
Rpm and speedometer work fine my problem is the oil , gas, and temperature gauges aren’t functioning correctly . Checked the fuse and cleaned the ground as well .any idea on how to fix it ?🤔
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo won't pass smog check even dough it runs very smooth .... We replaced a new cathalist converted as the only fault. ..... Can somebody Help Please?
97 jeep wrangler: the radio doesn't doesn't display anything and nothing was working on the cluster. Every once in a while they would all work. Then everything went dead for a few weeks but now all my gauges on my cluster work except for the radio, and the digital odometer (all black, doesn't display anything.) The fuses seem to be okay and I even installed another instrument cluster (odometer still doesn't work.) What could the problem be?
thanks a whole lot, my 93 yj is doing the exact same thing just started out of nowhere, checked that fuse and it was loose but I was about to take the cluster out so this may save me some time and headache
This was the first video that popped up for me. it was the fuse but time will tell if and why it blew the fuse in the first place 1990 YJ 2.5 four angary squirrels.....
I went to different kinds of mechanics and even to the dealer service center they didn’t know what causing the problem. I end up buying a new one but still no help. This is my problem for two years now.Tomorrow I will find out if you are the real master mechanic.
I have a 94 yj as well & all the gauges are working except for my speedo/odo. I have had the ground checked & cleaned. I have also changed the speed sensor. I have checked the #9(15 amp fuse & it's good. Can someone help me. oh yeah, the dash does light up. It's ONLY the speedo & odo that's the problem...Please help
I have a 96 jeep grand Cherokee. My gages stopped working. When I first start it the gages work than moment later they shut off and my security light on the dash turns on but the jeep still runs and drives
I had to recently purchase a cluster because it wasnt reading properly. Does my use cluster need to be reprogram to fit my 99 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo which have over 323,000miles?
Since you posted about electrical, I have a 92 installed a stereo hard wired directly to factory wiring, seeing previous owner did a number on the one previously instead of finding an adaptor. Issue I am having is the stereo seems to be coming back on periodically once the key is shut off, any pointers?
wegngis Yes unfortunately the guy cut off the end just to abandon and wire it up half butt, after researching and identifying what everything was I just wired directly. Shame previous owner or more people don't they're very simple. Looks like I'll have to follow all the way back and replace entire harness. Thank you
Make sure ignition is in the off position. On my 93 the radio will sometimes come on even after I remove the key. I just move the switch a little to make sure its in the off position and the radio goes off.
I know this is a older video but my 92 xj is haven some issues with the tach every now an then the yach will read off some lien normally it will read around 2-2200 on the hiway but some times it reads around 1500 or less an when I’m at idle it does not read at all
I had gauge issues once as well but I just changed fuses, problem solved. The problem I have now is that my gauge lights don't light up even after I changed bulbs, any suggestions?
My instrument cluster failed and red air bag light was illuminated for the last three days on my 98 Cherokee. All the other electrical components worked. I held the trip reset button in and turned the key to the ON position and the cluster worked fine. Freaking gremlins!
Hi new here but I’m 17 and have been saving to purchase my own car and I found a 1987 Jeep wrangler that seems to be in great condition but the gauges don’t work I’ll be near the end of my budget if I purchase it... would it be worth it to purchase it and then try and get this fixed or just move on and keep searching??
I have a 98 tj... I had this problem I did some research and it was some wires that needed to be twisted.... that fixed my have problem, but my fuel gage still acting up... do you have any ideas?
My 02 TJ gauges don't work and every once in awhile it comes on. Checked that twisted pair thread on the forums and found out it's not a fix for an 02 model because it's different. So I'm stuck I guess
I have a 91 YJ, Canada made... can you tell me if there is an Inertia Cut Off Switch, if so where? I have a ARS relay but it's good... by accident I went to start it and it was in gear and jumped... then took it out of gear started and it ran for a few minutes and stopped... I can't hear the fuel pump load up, all fuses are good... I figure either fuel pump went out or switch tripped... HELP!
Boy, that's a tough one. No cut off switch that I know of. I'd start checking battery, starter, ignition. Checking for lose wires as well. Tight battery and starter connections... etc.
88 renix Xj the wires that go to one of the injectors is mia the one closest to the fire wall on the injector two black i can figure out the ground but i cant find a black wire from the fire wall and on the ecu thers two black wires is one of them for the injector
Hello, I have a CJ5 1958 and I did the change between my old fuel gauge and temp gauge, and put a new gauge from Omix ada, with a new sending unit. The temp gauge is OK but the fuel gauge is showing wrong, I bought other gauge and the problem persist, I think is something with the resistance, What can I do to resolve it?
Thanks! Your channel helps me so much, I haven’t finalized my purchase of my ‘88 yet, but she’s in such good shape but I don’t know anything about cars, so I e been studying to get ahead! What year is your YJ?
thanks man no power windows overhead guages inter mittened lights didnt flash with remote entry left battery disconected cleanned ground fixed all problems all problems solved
Thanks man, this was exactly my issue when my gauges suddenly went out, you saved me a lot of headache
Awesome! Glad it helped 👍
7 years ago to current 2024 its still helping bro, because you just helped me fix my issue and now all my gauges are working! TY

Thanks for your help. It was the #9 fuse needed to be cleaned.
This is a life saver! I was just thinking about my gauges this morning. I'm doing this as soon as I get home. I hope it works
Mark Roy Awesome! Good timing on this video release ;)
Well that didn't work, but I still have to check that ground. Wish me luck!
JeepSolid my issue is all my work except fuel, temp, and oil pressure. Any ideas???
howd it turn out ? figure out what to the issue was ?
Nate Williams actually ended up being the gauges themselves. I guess water got behind the dash and did some damage
Thanks for the tip, that's exactly what was wrong with my jeep.. problem just showed up this morning. Pulled the fuse out cleaned it stuck it back in and it worked
Thanks for this awesome video. It really helped me fix it. Do you know what could cause that 15amp fuse to blow out because mine was blown out?
This was exactly what I needed to fix my kid's jeep. Thank you!
I have an xj with a very similar problem. 27 year old rig needs constant tlc, but I love it
I’ve been having an issue with my speedometer, and this video does give me some ideas. I did replace the speed sensor or wiring, but not all the wiring. Thanks for posting this one. Hopefully I can figure this out.

Which fuse if any is constant on the box on the drivers side panel?
My '95 YJ keeps blowing that fuse, but only when I go in reverse... It is manual. I can't find the forum link, but someone had said that they had the same issue. My daughter has an 02 on the island of St. Marteen that is having this issue so we ope to be able to fix it with the guidance of this video. Thank you
Great. Hope it works for you.
I need help with my jeep Speedo wiring , where is a good place to get some info ?
I hate chasing electrical gremlins! Great video on troubleshooting!
+TrailRecon Yeah, can be a real nightmare sometimes. Thanks.
Number 9... Thats great but what is the nomenclature , what area is the fuse for , the name , the title !
good afternoon I have a jeep 1990 Wrangler all the instruments work but the luxes of the dashboard do not dream could you give me a tip?
Wow I am learning so much from you sir thank you for the video.
I’m having an issue with just my gas gauge, any recommendations?
I am considering buying a 1998 Jeep XJ model and was told the gauges work about 30% of the time.

Rented one last week. I had to change it, because of bad gauges. So, I guess the legacy continues even with new jeeps.
Great video. Any directions for the installation on the steering wheel horn retainer plate assembly for a 1994 Jeep Wrangler. I cannot locate directions.
My oil pressure gauge slams to 80 and remains there. I have replaced the sending unit and the gauge. Still at 80. Any thoughts?
Great explaining what was the problem
Wow, thanks bother! Save me a bunch of time and money!! Love the channel!
Amazon now has new circuit boards for 86 to 90 yjs with clocks. It is wonderful.
Some of my gauges work except for my oil pressure and my battery gauge. What would that problem be. Would that be the gauge is bad or some wiring?
Thank for this video. Electrical can always be tricky and complicated.
For sure!
I have a 92 YJ and my speedometer , odometer , and fuel gauge doesn't work, all my other gauges work perfectly. Any idea what that could be? I have not tried any thing to fix it but I will try all of these methods when I get off today. Thanks for the video

+Guy Whitney Good point! Lots of people out there don't know too much weight on your key ring can cause issues. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 94 yj having the exact same issue tried everything you suggested and still nothing from any of my gauges
Any tips on why all my gauges are good except my speedometer?
I only have my speedo out also, did you ever figure out what it was?
I'm having trouble with my Jeep Cherokee all the gauges are going crazy in my car keeps dying out it won't start what could be the problem
Check on the generator is the part which charges the battery ....any Auto Zone will test it for you
Hello, how did you replace driver side speaker? great channel I love how you explain things in great detail. I thank you in advance!!
It was a pain. Just loosened what dash bolts I could 👍

Mine does the same man it works some days others it doesn’t I’ve heard it could be alternator
I took my tack and speedo out and there was only plug on tack side nothing on speedometer side is that right it's a 95 yj
How do you fix it if you have good gages and most lights work except speedometer lights
Rpm and speedometer work fine my problem is the oil , gas, and temperature gauges aren’t functioning correctly . Checked the fuse and cleaned the ground as well .any idea on how to fix it ?🤔
i have a 96 zj and my engine mileage is stuck at 260652, it displays the numbers but not counting when i drive around. What do you think it could be??

that's exactly what was wrong, I just replaced the fuse because it looked a little rough, but this video saved me a bunch of trouble shooting
+TheJessellewis That's awesome! Glad it helped ya out. These YJ's can have some funny little quirks to them.
+TheJessellewis Nice! Thanks for watching!!
My 4wheel drive light doesn't come on when engaged plz help

Thanks really help... where did you get the windows for your Jeep? Upper door
They came with the Jeep when I bought it..
Can Vaseline be used on the stud and connector to keep away corrosion?
yes.
I have a 94 yj as well & all the gauges are working except for my speedo/odo. I have had the ground checked & cleaned. I have also changed the speed sensor. Joyce Amerson me too!
Same!!!!
Same
Any idea why the odometer doesn't work but the speedometer and every thing else does?
This is on a 94' YJ. Thanks
I have a 96 jeep grand Cherokee. My gages stopped working. When I first start it the gages work than moment later they shut off and my security light on the dash turns on but the jeep still runs and drives
3:43 the tab is broken off on the left side of fuse 9
Good eye!
I had to recently purchase a cluster because it wasnt reading properly. Does my use cluster need to be reprogram to fit my 99 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo which have over 323,000miles?
Humm.... sorry, not sure.
Since you posted about electrical, I have a 92 installed a stereo hard wired directly to factory wiring, seeing previous owner did a number on the one previously instead of finding an adaptor. Issue I am having is the stereo seems to be coming back on periodically once the key is shut off, any pointers?
lionelhernandez34 id suggest getting a wiring harness and redoing everything.
wegngis
Yes unfortunately the guy cut off the end just to abandon and wire it up half butt, after researching and identifying what everything was I just wired directly. Shame previous owner or more people don't they're very simple. Looks like I'll have to follow all the way back and replace entire harness. Thank you

Ugh, electrical can be a nightmare. Lights are on a separate fuse, I'd start there.
Nice. I have a 2000 Grand that is doing a similar thing. I'll have to check this out.
My instrument cluster failed and red air bag light was illuminated for the last three days on my 98 Cherokee. All the other electrical components worked. I held the trip reset button in and turned the key to the ON position and the cluster worked fine. Freaking gremlins!
Does this work for a Patriot 2009 too?
Hi new here but I’m 17 and have been saving to purchase my own car and I found a 1987 Jeep wrangler that seems to be in great condition but the gauges don’t work I’ll be near the end of my budget if I purchase it... would it be worth it to purchase it and then try and get this fixed or just move on and keep searching??
It really depends on the condition of the rest of the vehicle and what the market is like in your area.
I have a 98 tj... I had this problem I did some research and it was some wires that needed to be twisted.... that fixed my have problem, but my fuel gage still acting up... do you have any ideas?
Check and clean the cluster. Also, check your grounds on the fuel system.
Check sending unit, too.
Yeah I’m having the same problem
Have you figured out the problem out yet?
Gna try ur fixes tmrw, thank you! Also my gas gauge went up to full, when I knew it was empty🤔
Thanks... working perfectly now
88 renix Xj the wires that go to one of the injectors is mia the one closest to the fire wall on the injector two black i can figure out the ground but i cant find a black wire from the fire wall and on the ecu thers two black wires is one of them for the injector
Oh man, bummer. I'm not that familiar with the wiring on the 88. Sorry
Muchas gracias, me funciono genial!, Saludos desde México!
My fuel guage stop working. I replaced the entire assembly but still don’t work. 😢 I’m at dead end.
tks like everybody said it worked great thank u again u rock keep up great help jeep on
want to say thankyou for the video. great job. it helped me out alot.
+Barry Crego Great! Glad it helped ya out.
You can check the fuses without pulling them. You can check right on top of the fuse.
It's hard for me to see them under there...
Had same problem with my cherokee jeep the corrosion is all over the fuse and contacts in fuse block
+Mark Baldwin You gonna use contact cleaner and file? Or another trick?
Just trough another fuse in it .just wondering why it does this on this particular fuse socket
Mark Baldwin Yeah, not sure
Thanks! Your channel helps me so much, I haven’t finalized my purchase of my ‘88 yet, but she’s in such good shape but I don’t know anything about cars, so I e been studying to get ahead! What year is your YJ?
Thanks! I'm glad my videos are helpful. This video is on my 94 YJ, but I also have 2 1992 YJ's.
So what if the speedometer is the only one that doesn’t work
I would check the wiring to the speed sensor on your transfer case.
Ok but my 15 fuse keeps blowing. I keep changing it out.
need directions in how to remove glove box out
Don't have a video on that at this point.
Great video Dale! Thanks for making it!
No problem. Hope it helped ya out!
Mine is the dash lights in a Grand cher limited
how do you locate the ground??
the ground in this video is on the passenger side of the engine
I have a 96 Grand Cherokee and none of the gauges are working, does anyone actually know how to fix this?
Thanks brother
I have a semi with that issue
I took to the dealer and they couldn’t figure it out
Checking mine tomorrow, thanks!
“Voila” the gauges are working… oh crap I’m out of fuel and this sucker is overheating 🤣🤣. Jk , thanks for the vid,, cheers👍
i love it everyone has the H.F. meter mine was $5.00
Mine was free! Well one of many that I have.
Electrical problems are the worst! Thanks for the great help.
Yeah, can be a nightmare sometimes. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the help, awesome.
thanks man no power windows overhead guages inter mittened lights didnt flash with remote entry left battery disconected cleanned ground fixed all problems all problems solved
Great. Glad it helped
All of my guages work but only my 4x4 light works.HELP
Did they all go out at once? I'd check and clean connections first.
not sure if you found the problem but did you swap out the 4x4 switch sensor on the transfer case?
