I was raised in a Christian household growing up. After joining the Army, my faith plummeted fast. I stopped caring and just wanted to do my own thing. But I know if I want to be an effective warrior than I need to be physically, mentally, and spiritually stable. Thanks for the good video john. I will try my best.

I appreciate your intention to move toward YHWH. But there is no try. There is only Done. We have to learn how to enjoy and abide in what The King has accomplished for us all. It’s us joining in the family and then in the family business as a son or a daughter. Cool!

@@jamesstewart8258 Yep, sounds like a warrior cult you are building there. You are already infiltrated, don't worry. Eyes are on you and they are not the eyes of your imaginary Sky-God.

Yeah, the military can make anyone's faith plummet. You know what else will destroy your faith? Going to Seminary school, studying theology or becoming a priest. There is a reason for that. It is because all that religion is bullshit.
You do not need to believe in an imaginary sky-god to be an effective warrior. You only need to believe in something bigger than yourself. If freedom, democracy, the constitution, the American public and the state are not enough for you to be a good tool. You can always shut off your brain and believe in a Sky-God. That will make you an effective tool for someone else's will. Maybe that is what being a "real warrior" means for you guys. If that is it, then so be it.
I want to believe things that are true and believe in what is real, not some whipped up shit, that some primitive, militaristic, sheep-fuckers made up, so that they could feel better about themselves dying in battle for Emperor Constantine.
Real warriors are smart enough to think beyond the veil of religious fantasy. You should too.
And if you come back from Iraq, Afghanistan or where ever you served and you cannot let this shit go, then you need to get help readjusting to civilian life.

Leo Peridot yes and I venture to say most God fearing folk would try to have the “bad guy” yield, but to defend ones life or that of your loved one is not a violation of Jesus teaching. Jesus never said, ignore the teachings of the father, he added to those. I don’t think that turn the other cheek means suffer and die. Evil must be fought and even Jesus fought with the devil (evil).

Why then did the Disciples have swords? (Luke 22:36-38)
Why did Nehemiah rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and why did God aid him? (Nehemiah 2:17... The whole book, really.)
Why did God command Moses to take a census and count every man, aged 20 or older and able to serve in the Army? (Numbers 1:1-4)
Why do all these things if we should be totally dependent on God for our protection?

Jon, many Christians wrestle with the idea of shooting another human being. I don't see this as a weakness or confusion about the faith, but more of a desire "not to murder or kill". As if we would be violating the 10 Commandments. God called His people to kill in proper times and circumstances. Nonetheless, we are free to protect the sanctity of human life on all circumstances, therefore carry your weapons and carry on. I hope that made sense.

    • @lauragraves4342
      @lauragraves4342 5 років тому +3

Turning the other cheek doesn't mean let someone murder you or someone else. It says in the Bible that if a burglar breaks into your house and you kill him, you are not at fault and will not be punished. That is where the "make my day" law in America comes from. And that you will be tried for murder if you strike a pregnant woman and her baby dies.

Wow, powerful stuff John. This is something I've been looking for. I was raised in Christianity and was quite devout growing up. I then began to rebel and just be young and stupid. I went through some tough stuff, though the whole time I still had in the back of my head I was going to get back right with God because I still had that desire. As I got older and tried to get back, I realised I had just believed because I was told that was the right way, and had no real foundation on my own relationship with God. I started questioning everything, how do I know God is even real? That is a really hard place to be in. To always have that drive, and feel like I had the answeres, then to feel like everything I knew and did was all for nothing. I was totally lost. The past year I have finally started to find my foundation, and be able to grow my relationship with God. This is another conformation for me that I'm on the right path, because we share the same outlook. Awesome stuff man, I really enjoy your whole channel.

Leo Peridot Friend, peace is certainly worth working for, but not everyone is willing to seek peace. Some, like terrorist groups, would seek to destroy because you were born in a particular nation or because you don’t agree with their philosophy.
Think of sheep, shepherds, and wolves. Is it unjust for shepherds to protect flock from ravenous predators?
Additionally, note that we don’t celebrate war, not the destruction of our enemies:
“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth” (Proverbs 24:17).
Conflict is inevitable in a fallen world and we must pray for our enemies that they would seek peace instead of violence. All the same, when an unarmed populace is subject to brutalization, we won’t sit back and let the flock get slaughtered.

    • @ericsnow3133
      @ericsnow3133 5 років тому +1

Leo Peridot you’re making the assumption that everyone in America is a Christian. Americans may do those things but you can’t just interchange Americans with Christians like that. And then on top of that, the people who call themselves Christians aren’t always actually Christians. Just because they believe in a God and say it’s the Christian God doesn’t mean it’s the God of the Bible. Most of the time it’s just a cherry-picked god of their own creation.
You are correct about the sheepdog comment though. The Bible says nothing about sheepdogs. It calls us all either sheep or goats.

Found your channel recently. Catching up on what I've missed. Great stuff brother. One of the best ways I have heard it put: An atheist asked a Christian how he could believe in God. He simply answered by saying if I'm wrong. What have I lost? I've lived a good life I've loved my family I've done what I felt was the right thing. I've treated others the way I want to be treated. And when I die I will go into the grave and be forgotten. But, if I'm right and your wrong. And he just smiled and walked away.

John Lovell- thanks for discussing the intersection between God and guns. Christianity offers a framework wherein self-defense makes sense. Life is valuable because we are made in God's image. Protecting and defending others makes sense because we are created by God and are valued. Justice in our world matters because God cares about justice. Justice was done when Jesus died in our place for our sins so that God's wrath would be satisfied. Our debt was paid by Jesus so God can now accept us if we trust in His son.

Why does "being made in the image of God", whatever that means, make life more valuable? How does that in any way affect the reasons we have to care about ourselves and our fellow humans?

    • @seamusstout5991
      @seamusstout5991 6 років тому +5

@@themuskratman I think that is a very deep question in and of itself that deserves way more than a UA-cam comment, but here I go anyway.
By biblical definition being "made in the image of God" means he made us in three parts just like Himself: body, soul, and spirit. The implication being that we will have free will beyond animal instinct as well as the ability to live forever in a spiritual sense.
God didn't do this for any other creature. This means He placed value on us. We matter for the same reason anything has value. As an example, diamonds have value because we as humans give them value. We as humans matter because God gives us value.
Now we as humans are willing to give up certain things for diamonds because we attribute them value. God in the same fashion was willing to come to earth in the flesh and die so that we could live eternally with Him. That is what we are worth, we are worth the life of God Himself.
How does it affect us and others? Well for one, because God values people, it means God will avenge wrong doing. He will one day right all wrongs at His judgement seat. Since we have all wronged others, we will all be subject to His judgement. The punishment for these wrongs will be an eternity in a lake of fire. That sounds pretty harsh, and also adds a LOT of weight to the wrongs we commit against others. The only way to avoid this fate that the enormous value God places on people brings, is by accepting the gift God gave us in his own death as substitution for our own punishment.
We who accept this gift may at first seem to now have the freedom do whatever we want (including hurt others and ourselves). In one sense we do, but the reason we do not is because we now ascribe value to God. We see his gift and recognize the love (value) he places on us, and love (value) Him in return. This means we don't hurt Him by hurting others or ourselves. In turn this also means we protect people because God values them.
The whole "made in the image of God" is really at the core of what life is all about. Life is about value. Though I prefer to use the word love.
Because we are made in the image of God, life is all about loving others and loving God.
Anyway, sorry for the long rant, that is at least how I best understand what it means. More than willing to hear any criticisms.

    • @unmalo2768
      @unmalo2768 5 років тому +3

In order to argue against a statement, you first have to understand the flaw in a statement (if one exists). But how can you question the statement "Being made in God's image", if you don't know what it means? It's like saying you will fight against aliens from outer space that will befukrulate you. If you don't know what "befukrulate" is, how can you defend or fight against it? You see, you're eagerness to be in the "cool crowd" and denounce God, has lead you to a "false start" in the commence sense race for truth. I think you would be better served by sitting back, researching what you fail to understand, until you can at least have a grasp of what the statement does mean to those that do believe in God, then you can argue against it. But I am pretty sure that f you do your due diligence and study what that statement means, you will have no choice but to come to know God, and then your argument will be mute....God bless you...

I do not share your opinion and belief in god but clearly you have given this topic a lot of thought and found a concept that works and makes sense for you and unlike many Muslims you're belief system doesn't hurt anyone but brings positivity to the world so that's completely fine with me. Why would I - being an atheist - even start to try to argue with you about that? As long as it gives you a purpose and strength and makes the world a better place go ahead! :)
I've found my purpose and strength in a different belief that doesn't require religion or deities and my moral standards are not very far from Christians ones.

John - you are presenting the biggest decision a person needs to make in life. In a great way. This community gets caught up in what ifs and gear that they idolize. But the most important thing is- we can't control anything. The biggest reason I conceal carry is to protect myself and my family. A firearm is a tool to give you an advantage or equal the same force that is presented. The most proficient and experienced person in War -no matter what level of training and tools they have- can still be killed. Our life is so short on this earth. But when you learn more about God and the love that Jesus Christ showed on the cross for us -you are emotionally inspired. When you submit your life to Christ you see life much more preciously and can enjoy life to the fullest. When you understand the sacrifice Jesus made for us by his death on the cross and was raised on the 3rd day - sacrificing for what is Good and protecting what you love isn't so daunting. You still can learn more about tools, how to use them more effectively, and tactics---but your purpose for all of it is enhanced.

I used to be christian but then went to catholic school and became atheist,
For your first problem with atheism I always found that whenever I had a question that my religion teachers couldn't answer, it was always "God did it" or "God works in mysterious ways". The problem is these are just convenient catch-all answers that just act as placeholders for things we don't know or understand. We thought gods made thunder and lightning before we understood the physics behind them, we thought gods pulled the sun across the sky before we figured out the real cause. The thing with the question of where did all this come from, it is an unanswerable question and saying god did it does little to resolve the question and at worst stops all further attempts solve the mystery. The big bang is the most commonly accepted theory because it makes sense from our observations of the current universe, the main one being the the universe is still continually spreading and expanding apart and we can make predictions that come true of that theory.
As for your problem about the meaning of life, what makes you feel that there is any inherent purpose or meaning for our lives? The trillions of lives that have come before us and trillions that will come after us will all one day fade from any living memory and any accomplishments or things they have done with their existence will have been swept away by the winds of time like they never existed at all. In the face of all of this, can you truly say that your life has any inherent purpose in the universe? But from my point of view, its precisely because that it has no inherent purpose or meaning that allows us create any meaning and fulfil whatever purpose we want to in our time here. No one is destined for great things but no one is destined for failure, it becomes entirely up to ourselves to try achieve what we like and not up to some unknown deity condemning you to a fate. Which is a far better view in my opinion.
As for morality, it is all relative to the environment you grew up in. Today's society pretty much all agrees that rape and pillaging is bad, yet if we go back to medieval christian or ancient hebrew societies, we've seen that they were perfectly fine with raping and pillaging from people who weren't apart of their group or had different religions. Yet they all believed in a deity, hence its not divinity that sets our morality but rather ourselves. I believe morality evolves within a society based on which behaviours are beneficial for it, since we are a social animals, we formed packs which grew into tribes and civilisations. Things such as murder and stealing from one another do not benefit the collective group hence they can be seen as bad however at a time when our packs or societies weren't as large as they are today it would be perfectly beneficial to kill and steal from other groups. And as time goes on and our packs grew into civilisations and became a global community we eventually head towards becoming one big group.

I understand what you mean John and I'm glad you've pointed it out. One of the scriptures that has always helped me explain to others in those situations where I look for proof is to remember this verse about faith.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

RattyB75 Then you're making God the author of sin. Your claim that "everything is preordained" can only reside with the premise that if everything is preordained, then God wanted sin to happen. It's different, then, when saying that just because God knows what will happen because He's perfect, doesn't mean that He forces this upon anyone. That would then make Him tyrannical forcing those to love Him vs allowing those to make that decision when He draws them. That, then, is not consistent with freedom. That would then be slavery. Adam and Eve had a willful relationship, and, since Eve was deceived (even though that was a willful allowance, she did not have to take the fruit. From your perspective, God preordained - forced - her do take it), there was then the need for reconciliation. You, then, have to hold to this pattern of illogical reasoning because if you drop this, then your whole system falls (I'm assuming 5 point Calvinism, or something close). However, our "free will" is limited. We actually do not have free will until we are in Christ because Christ lives in "me." Prior to that, our free will is limited because if it weren't, evil would be above divinity. That means that evil could be just as powerful as God. Since it is not, we see this all over Scripture where someones evil is ended, or limited, then, that would mean God limits our freedom of doing only evil. We can do nothing truly "good" until we have met the conditions He has laid out for us and follow them with OUR whole hearts. If everything is preordained, and we don't have at least limited free will, then there is no reason for the Cross. He wants worshippers, not slaves, or people who are forced into a relationship. You have to keep this falsity to keep irresistible grace, election and limited atonement. Since those, too, are incorrect, the rest of that particular system is demolished. Jesus tells us to love the Lord our God with all OUR heart, mind, soul and strength...and our neighbor. He does not say, love the Lord your God with all MY...it's willful. Jesus also says that IF YOU abide. That means that you don't have to, as in, He cannot force you to do so, it's a choice. Clearly, then, your doctrine is not represented in Scripture.

***** Calm down. You really didn't say much in your original comment. Are you saying we don't have free will? You'd be wrong...sort of, as I already explained. Is everything "preordained?" Not in the fact that God knows and forces something to happen. Just because He knows, doesn't mean He's the author of it, nor wants it to happen. That's not an all loving God either. He knows if you'll backslide. Does He want you to? No. Does He force you? No. You, by a limited free will, choice, can decide if you want to stay in His love or not. Why don't you address what I said rather than "pseudo-intellectually" dodging it? It's either your an "used to be Christian" atheist, or, one who doesn't clearly understand what you just wrote in your original comment. If the former, it's quite useless to continue. If the latter, then my original address is quite certainly good enough to refute yours.

I grew up in a non denominational bible church, played guitar in the youth band, went to camp, the works. I spent about 10 years in active drug addiction and alcoholism. Although I never once doubted the existence of God, I went through plenty of events in my life where God clearly saved my life. But I came to a point where I doubted whether he cared for me or not, not realizing God's plan for me. He stripped me down to the point where I had nothing to depend on but him. My free will had not yet aligned with God's will. Now, 3 years sober, I have a relationship with God again. We haven't started going to church again do to slothfulness. But I spend my free time helping alcoholics and addicts to get sober and find God. I have been blessed with the life I have been given. I just didn't always realize it. John, you are a great thinker of our generation, and I've grown to love this channel and the philosophy behind why you produce the content that you do. This is an part from my book "Keep My Commandments" hope you enjoy the info.
    The Sixth Commandment
    You shall not murder.
    Hebrew Shall you murder not
Exod 20:13 (AHRC) you will not murder,
    Hebraic Insight...
The Jewish sages note that the word retzach ( strongs Heb 7523) applies only to illegal killing (e.g., premeditated murder or manslaughter) - and is never used in the administration of justice or for killing in war. Therefore KJV’s translation as "thou shalt not kill" is way too broad. This is part of the reason why men find it so easy to take another mans life. Their understanding is to broad, and not narrow enough to clearly define what murder is.
Nakah (strong Heb 5221) is the prime root and applies: to smite - attack - slay- slaughter or kill.
Since man is made in the image of Yahweh , his life is infinitely precious, and only Yahweh Himself has the right to give and take life. In the Mishnah it is written, "Why was only one man (i.e., Adam) created by Yahweh ? - to teach that whoever takes a single life destroys thereby a whole world; and whoever saves one life, the Scripture accounts it as though a whole world had been saved (Sanhedrin 4:5).
While there are 5 different Hebrew words for kill or murder they do not all mean the same thing because each comes from a different scriptural context. For instance the Hebrew word used in the sixth commandment deals with intentionally, premeditated, killing out of malice, in one word 'murder'.
We need to make note that "killing" itself need not have a moral context.
    A soldier kills in battle,
An intended murder victim kills in self defense,
A drug dealer kills his competition,
    A Doctor kills a patient.
Whether criminal (the drug dealer), civil (the doctor), or righteous (the intended murder victim) killing depends on the context and circumstances.
But murder can be figurative as well as literal. The Talmud notes that shaming another publicly is like murder, since the shame causes the blood to leave the face. Moreover, gossip or slander are considered murderous to the dignity of man. The Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) states, "The evil tongue slays three persons: the utterer of the evil, the listener, and the one spoken about…" Yeshua our LORD also linked the ideas of our words and attitudes with murder.
Matt. 15:19 (ERV) For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication s, thefts, false witness, railings:
Recent events of some people who have no desire to personally know the Creator and follow His guidebook, in trying to shame political figures are in essence killing that official. There fore they are guilty of murder according to the creators view point.
What makes human life so precious? Consider it from the creators viewpoint. He made us in his image for the purpose of creating in us his character for fellowship. Because of that he is "not willing that any should perish"
2Pet 3:9b (NET) The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
1Tim 2:4 (NET) since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
    Yeshua explained
John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
However, human life is treated with such indifference in our world. We settle our differences with war, killing hundreds of thousands of other people in the process. Criminals steal not only possessions but their victims lives. Many people view unwanted pregnancies as simply an inconvenience of their sexual activity to the extent that; The CDC reported that from 2000 to 2008; the rate of abortions in the United States has been just below or just above one million unborn babies aborted per each year. Even in our daily newscasts murder is commonly the first topic of the day. Violence is so unexplainably woven into the fabric of our societies that we glamorize it in our literature and entertainment. At the heart of these questions is this one thing: who possesses the authority to take life? Who has the right to make that decision? The emphasis on the word you is paramount. You shall not murder! You are not to deliberately kill. We must make the choice to control our tempers. Being acutely aware of the contexts we find ourselves in will give us knowledge for making righteous choices.
    Summary
The Sixth Commandment is about Respect for Human life.
Yahweh asks us to demonstrate love and not hate towards others by not murdering. We must learn to control our tempers, or even especially our greed (aborshine). Taking another person's life is not our right to decide. That judgment is reserved for Yahweh alone. That is the thrust of this Commandment. Yahweh does not allow us to choose to willfully or deliberately take another person's life. The Sixth Commandment reminds us that Yahweh is the giver of life and He alone has the authority to take it or to grant permission to take it. Yahweh wants us to go far beyond avoiding murder. He requires that we not maliciously harm another human being in word or deed. This is why John wrote,
1John 3:15 (ESV) “Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him”
We see that an example against murder is amplified by Yeshua when He said
Matt 5:21-22 (REV) "you have heard that our forefathers were told, 'do not commit murder; anyone who commits murder must be brought to justice.' 22 But what I tell you is this: anyone who nurses anger against his brother must be brought to justice. Whoever calls his brother 'good for nothing' deserves the sentence of the court who ever calls him 'fool' deserves hellfire"
Yeshua amplified the meaning of murder to include bitter animosity contempt or hateful hostility towards others. Merely harboring malicious attitudes toward others violates the intent of the sixth commandment. You might ask why? The answer is that, it is mental and emotional abuse directed toward others and the desire to see a fellow human being suffer.
Yahweh desires that we treat even those who choose to hate us respectfully and do all within our power to live in peace and harmony with them. He wants us to be builders, not destroyers of good relationships. To accomplish this we must respect this wonderful gift, this precious possession, human life. We must also be ready to defend it when ever possible or needed.

Whenever Soldiers go to war, they do not "Kill" The enemy. They "Strike them down". Summary execution is not described as "Killing". They are "Put to the sword". Execution of criminals is not described as "Killing". It is referred to as "Put to death".

@Leo Peridot trust me no there isn't. The website you're probably going to bring up is a joke.
Atheism is a BELIEF SYSTEM set up to disavow the creator of everything.
Even self proclaimed atheists who say it's a BELIEF in nothing. Is still a belief.
Atheists are a silly bunch of lost souls who love their sin.

@Leo Peridot apparently you have not read the definition of the word. No one is telling me this. No zealot with junk ideas.
Go ahead and believe what you want. It doesn't affect me one way or the other.
Atheists are against personal accountability and personal responsibility. If there is no moral compass to guide you. The.n nothing you do is wrong.

@Leo Peridot you obviously do not understand the christian faith, or any faith as it seems.
Just because a person claims a faith does not arbitrarily mean they follow the tenants of the chosen faith.
Since you brought up Christianity specifically. If you commit any crime. You said murder of an abortion doctor. Funny you'd go there right off the bat. Anyways no where in the the Bible does it specifically tell anyone to take matters into their own hands. It doesn't even hint or elude to it. Any one who commits a crime. Then says God told them to do it. Either do not understand God at all, and are using it as a scapegoat as you pointed out. Or are hearing voices and are not right in the head.
The days of prophets are over. God or his angels do not speak to us. The message was delivered and payment was made in full.
It's up to each individual now.
Fun fact that seems to upset people. Christians and Catholics are not the same thing.
Christians follow the philosophy of Christ. Catholics follow the Pope, a man.
Atrocities committed by "Christians" tend to be done by Catholics "Christians". But all Christians seemed to be lumped in with the Catholics.
No where does Christ ever tell his followers to harm anyone.
Morality in your point of views is relative. What you may consider moral may be immoral to others. Especially if we are allowed to define our own moral code. I don't need the Bible or God to keep me from committing various crimes. Such as murder which you went there immediately. Theft could have also been used and met the same goal.

@Leo Peridot you've proven beyond a reasonable doubt you don't know anything of what you're talking about.
You're bringing up 300+ year old events. You do understand that not a single soul on earth today was alive back then?
Just for the record the ar 15 and m 16 are not the same thing at all. You should stop spitting out fun facts. That comment alone may spark a whole thread off subject.

Talk about contorted non-logic. The moment gods are mentioned logic and reason are gone. There is faith and reason they can't be reconciled. Would Jesus carry an AR15?
