they were more alternative rock, like smashing pumpkins. not really in the so called grunge genre which was more heavy/hard-rock and guitar riff-driven.
Silverchair were a really really fucking awesome grunge band frogstomp and freak show were fucking awesome albums but the albums after that fucking sucked ass
Great video guys! I lived in Seattle from 1988 till 1991, attended the Art Institute of Seattle. My roommate brought Alice in Chains in to cut one of their first demo's and put together a Promo Pack. You could tell then they were about to blow up! I did tour shirts for Sanctuary in '89 for the "Into the Mirror Black" tour. At that same time, I began doing artwork for the band "Terrorist" awesome three piece metal band like Forced Entry. "The Terrorist Hut" became an infamous party spot after local shows and on Sunday nights listening to Jeff Gilbert's "Brain Pain" on KCMU, where you could hang out with bands like Forced Entry, Bitter End, Big Top, Assault & Battery, Cyperus, Deviant, Requiem, Terrorist and the Accused. To me Those bands and bands like Portland's SWEATY NIPPLES, were the true unsung heroes of the Northwest music scene!
You heard wrong. New York, Honolulu, San Fran, San Jose, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego and many more North American cities are more expensive according to most lists.
Thank you for doing this video. In the 90's I was huge into grunge. I am sure you know the ones I was into. Thanx to this video I can relive the 90's with bands that I never heard of . I always wondered what it would have been like to live in Seattle during that era of music.
Does anybody here like Truly? Truly is amazing. They're more psychedelic than garage punk/metal grunge bands usually were, but grunge is more of label and a scene in Seattle. The former bassist of Soundgarden and the former drummer of Screaming trees probably keeps them within the grunge scene.
Does it feel like the 90s? Not even a little bit. Most of the clubs from back then are closed or changed ownership... Plus the Seattle area has really boomed in the economy, so there is tons of new construction and architecture changes. It's still Seattle, where we love good coffee, beer and food... but the city has definitely progressed too.
I really tried to get into Hammerbox because they had that fantastic hit song: HED. Also Carrie Akre is just a great soulful singer...but for some reason the rest of their songs (plus her next band Goodness) just never struck a cord with me for some reason...
I actually got permission to use that Rorschach Test song from the main dude himself! Admittedly, I'm not huge on the local industrial scene, but I like what they do. That said, I'm big fans of Ministry, NIN, Coil, Rammstein, and others.
Funny you should mention Nevermore... I remember picking up a friend of mine from Jeff Loomis's house in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle back in the early 90s... She spent the night after a show. This was when they were called Sanctuary. Their house had lots of Dream Theater CDs laying around, so I knew they were gonna be a rockin' band! :)
I really love Frosting on the Beater as well, and we originally had a section in this video talking about it...but cut it for time. I really love the songs Burn & Shine and Coming Right Along
I'm really big into Opeth and somebody recommended Katatonia to me recently. I really like their albums Last Fair Deal Gone Down & The Great Cold Distance. Great stuff!
Not really technically a Seattle band but Melvins are one of my all-time favorites and I still listen to Tad every now and again. Especially God's Balls and those other early ones but they're all good. Come on, you cant top an album name like God's Balls. Also, Sunny Day Real Estate and Mudhoney's early records I still go back to. As well as Nirvana.
To me the most underrated band of the Seattle 90s scene were The Posies. Frosting on the Beater especially is an amazing album that should have been huge to my ears. It has that 90s Seattle 'grunge' sound, but more melodic, more harmonies, & unique chord arrangements. It's, I guess, 'prettier' than most of the bands from that scene, which I've heard they got slagged off because of. Quite a shame if that's the case. Chef recommends. Solar Sister = one of the best songs of the 90s.
Great fucking video! I remember being the coolest kind in elementary school cause I listened to Nirvana (here's to your baby sitters having older kids there!). Loved all of the grunge bands of that era and remember balling my eyes out the day Kurt Cobain died. Whew lots of memories with these bands with my friends in 6th grade rocking out to Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots haha.
YEA. i am a person who is very DooMMetal, & also love the type of pagan classic music, but i also always love grunge music.. nirvana, alice in chains soundgarden were always my favorites,i will never forget about them, but TOOL is my fav band from california & 1 of my most beloved bands of all times
you can create labels for anything, even grunge is just a label to describe a short music period and style. I dont like that many labels so I just keep it simple. Still, AiC doesn't sound like most of grunge bands, sounds more like old Metallica than Pearl Jam or Soundgarden
Bratmobile had a record or so on Lookout records, I think. I was really big on Bay Area punk in the 90's. MTX, Invalids, Rancid and Green Day before they exploded of course, etc
Curiously i was also into heavier music back then, actually i was vocalist of a Swedish style Death Metal band but i must say i always listened to a bit of grunge when i was hanging..Melvins,PJ,A I Chains,Mudhoney M L Bone, Temple of the dog.... Now, 24 years later,i realise grunge was and IS my style/music/way of life. Thanks for this vid,it's lovely!!
Goodness is hit or miss, I just like a couple of their songs, for Hammerbox, besides Hed they also have the great When 3 is 2, actually almost all of the Numb album is great for me.
4:20 - You're omitting the only two British bands on the main stage: Lush (who played right before Pearl Jam, and are my favourite band) and The Jesus & Mary Chain. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Lollapalooza_lineups_by_year#1992
Great video! I'm 22 and got into all the Early 90's "Grunge" bands just a few years ago. Alice in Chains is now one of my favourite bands. I wish I grew up though that, really great fuckin music in those early 90's. I grew up with my dad playing 70's rock so Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the like are the bands I'm REALLY into. I feel most music these days is complete garbage though imo.
MJR, you're a lucky man. I think Rebecca is awesome, because she actively participates in your many loves, most notably your gaming addiction... And a woot woot for Black Happy! Love those guys, and they hail out of my state, though I know they're more actively known in the Washington scene. I made a couple videos for Black Happy. Check them out at- /watch?v=pvtNyYS99LQ and /watch?v=HZcTouiUsds
*Not Being a Dick* Woah...Wait a minute...You were listening to Pantera, when you found out about Soundgarden????? I'm 36...soooo... You were listening to Pantera in thier "Hair Metal/Glam Metal" days??? I remember hearing Soundgarden waaayyy before Pantera. Pantera 'Cowboys' was released 1990??? Fopp and Screaming Life 87 or 88?? Just trying to figure out the dates.. : )
ghost brigade, mors principium est, omnium gatherum, dagon, wintersun, soen etc... and those are all bands 2000 and higher that are pretty fucking good, these bands are from genres of melodic death metal to progressive and doom. so there is still really good stuff out there, its just hard to find
My dad saw silverchair at the palace theatre near Luna park back when frogstomp had only just come out the band members were only 14 and the lead singer Daniel johns did a stage dive and knocked himself out
Love the video man, I actually saw Pearl Jam about a month ago in Atlanta...they were great live. Maybe on the next music vid you can do you're favorite artist/band you've seen live or favorite song/band to cover. Again good work!!!!!
yeah well thats cool man, i could never really get into opeth as much as i thought i would but still they are a very talented band, if you liked great cold distance, also check out viva emptiness
Great episode. I can't wait for the hair metal one. Maybe an episode on bands that were great but failed. Like for example Life Sex Death. I love their only album and wish they did make more.
What was the song played in a small clip at 08:52? Sounds like a mix of Ministry and Circle of Dust. I remember hearing it years ago and forgot the name. Any help would be much appreciated.
Got this video as a suggestion and watched it again for the first times since it was released. So great to hear and hope you guys will do more of them and talk more about the 90s! :) Saved a bunch of these records you suggested and will listen through them.
Reminds me of the Almost Live clip where music producers were trying to sign up new music acts in Seattle. Even the bums on the street had contracts. lol
In terms of Rock Acts from Seattle, for me my top 5: 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Nirvana (tied with Heart) 3. Alice In Chains 4. Soundgarden 5. Pearl Jam (tied with Mudhoney)

There's no such thing as "grunge". Grunge was s term made up later by record companies and flannel shirt companies to sell CDs and flannel shirts to pissed off teenagers. None of those bands ever called themselves "grunge"

If all you guys check out is one band, CHECK OUT SKY CRIES MARY!! Unfortunately im an east coaster so no one here really knows about them. They don't tour this way unfortunately. Seriously CHECK THEM OUT. This Timeless turning is amazing.
I was at Black Happy's last show at the Rock Candy. Great stuff. Was also at that Tool show in Kitsap. One of my favorite memories of that show was going into the fair grounds they had an autistic guy chilling with a click counter clicking as people went in for the show. He was counting 6+ lines of people getting ticket checked while just looking straight forward keeping count with his clicker. I was lucky enough to see Tool earlier at DV8 or one of it's many club names. Small venues>large.
Hey guys what about the goth industrial electro scene? Black Atmosphere, Rorschach Test, Assemblage 23, Christ Anaologue, Noise Box, Kill Switch Klick, etc? I noticed you had the song Satan from Rorschach Test playing in your back round music and didn't even have them on your list. I know most of these guys and they had some stuff right smack in the 90's era. Hope you'll do another review soon show casing these bad boys. Thanks. Go Seahawks!!!
Please, please, please add a list of honorable mentions. It's really hard to tell who's album on the desk is who's. You should also do a show on alt-rock 90's music (like early Peppers and Faith no More). Also, a show about the dwindling days of metal, grunge and rock as the 90's were coming to an end. How did you (who lived through the eras of cool music) take it. Can't wait for the hair metal show! :)
Hey Metal Jesus & Mrs Metal Jesus, awesome video, i loved it. One of my favourites from the 90s, although not from Seattle, is Type O Negative. Bloody Kisses, October Rust are absolute treasures. RIP Peter Steele. I am very curious to what music you listen to from nowadays. Sometimes it's hard to find good new bands, so maybe you guys could do album reviews of some good new bands? There is one new band/album I highly recommend: Ghost - Opus Eponymous. Go check it out! Cheers, Tim (Netherlands)
Great Video, Growing up in England we had some great indie bands in the 1990's like Oasis and The Verve and Shed Seven. The Seattle music Scene did not go un noticed over here though and Grunge did make great waves to music as a whole and the Seattle influence played a massive part in that. What did go un noticed was the east bay harcore scene that bands like AFI, Tiger Army, Anti-Flag etc... That is some great music right there and If you havent listened I urge you to give it a try !
You guys both look great, losing weight, looking younger. Good job! Losing weight is a bitch, especially as you get older. One thing you might look into that has done wonders for me is pure green coffee extrct, 800mg 30 mintues. You can find it at GNC. I haven't changed my diet up very much, haven't been exercising much and my weight lose is noticeable. Worth looking into!!
Pretty cool video, wasn't a big grunge man myself but enjoyed Soundgarden at Download festival this year(as i usually say at this point you should seriously consider a visit for it, no self respecting metal jesus can ignore the call of the mecca that is donington park - next year Iron Maiden, Slipknot & Rammstein headlining....). Look forward to the hair metal video, a little more my style! :) Keep up the good work!
Great video man, some other great bands from the 90's would be Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Mad Season, The Toadies (not from Seattle) Temple of the Dog. I personally would recommend Mad Season, it's Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, Mike McCreedy from Pearl Jam, Barret Martin from Screaming Trees and blues bassist John Saunders.
I really gotta give it to you Metal Jesus. You are the best reviewer on UA-cam. This video proves it. I always follow your video game stuff, but it's RARE that someone recommends a band that I actually end up liking a lot. Green Apple Quickstep and the Dandy Warhols are about to get some serious ear time. Listened to 3 songs from each band so far and...10/10.
Grunge Rock/Metal was one of those things that I had to grow into. I didn't like it at first because at the time I was more into Slayer, Megadeth, Overkill type stuff. I went to the Clash of the Titans tour in Detroit back in like 1990 or 91, (I'm from Lansing Michigan BTW), they had Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Alice in Chains. Alice in Chains opened up but I don't think anyone had ever heard of them, I know I had never heard of them at the time, because when they were on, the crowd was basically out buying t-shirts or smoking weed or something, there was hardly anybody in the seats watching the show. But then after they were done, Slayer was next and the crowd just started pouring in. hahaha. They just seemed so out of place. But that was basically my first taste of Seatle grunge. After that though when they release Dirt and Nirvana's Teen Spirit came out I started to get into it more. As for Pearl Jam, Ten was a good album, but my favorite is their 2nd album Vs.
how do you guys feel about Mega City Four? They were like the British Nirvana even though I kinda disagree with that connection! However they come from a punk background so I can see why they're dubbed that. Sebastopol Rd is one of their most Seattle sounding esque albums they've ever did. Listen to Props and Callous for your early 90s alternative rock fix. can you do punk next?

Metal Jesus, Great video. Love 90s grunge and miss it a lot especially when flipping on the radio now-a-days. Alice In Chains still has the most plays of any band on my iPod. If you haven't already, check out Umphrey's McGee. You might like what you hear. They'll be in Seattle on 3/14 at Neptune.
first saw tool on the 2nd stage at palooza. had a dream that night which just replicated what i saw of them on stage..woke up straight out of bed and said to myself 'their is something about those guys' big influence for me for sure. great memories too! sweet video!
For a future episode, how about college rock / college radio from the '80s and very early '90s? Like, before grunge and alternative. REM, Jesus and Mary Chain, Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Milkmen, Replacements, etc. The '80s were the most diverse period for music, so a lot of it gets overlooked.
I listened to a bunch of shoegazer music in the 90s, including My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver, Lush and more. Great stuff!
You have a cool wife! You two look great. I want that :(
...........forever alone.
It's Karen!!!!
the Melvins?????? hello?????
John Rasimovich yes no mention of the Godfather band the Melvins. You can't forget them DAMN!!!!!!
Came here to say the same thing...
Melvins sound like offbrand slowed down slayer
No love for Sunny Day Real Estate?
they were more alternative rock, like smashing pumpkins. not really in the so called grunge genre which was more heavy/hard-rock and guitar riff-driven.
There was really nobody quite like Alice in Chains. The mix of dark gothic drug filled lyrics, moody guitars and awesome grooves.
Thanks! I actually enjoy almost every kind of music. Like the great Gene Simmons of KISS once said: It's ok to like steak ...AND cheese cake! :)
My Blood Valentine's LOVELESS album is one of my all time favorites! Also really enjoy early Stereolab
4:27 Miss Metal Jesus just dropped the F-Bomb on us!
My new favorite UA-cam channel
Silverchair were a really really fucking awesome grunge band frogstomp and freak show were fucking awesome albums but the albums after that fucking sucked ass
metal jesus where are you from? korea or canada or maybe taiwan?
+Mike Seaquest I am originally from Arakkis. It's really dry and hot there, but we got some unique local culture!
Obscure Temple of the Dog reference FTW
MetalJesusRocks DUNE!!! :) Nice! Really enjoy your channel
Tell me of your home world, Usul.

the accused rule but how can you talk Portland and not mention poison idea
You heard wrong. New York, Honolulu, San Fran, San Jose, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego and many more North American cities are more expensive according to most lists.
We haven't had time for Rock Talk lately... and I hate to squeeze it on at the end. However, I have one ready to go, so hopefully soon! :)
The Melvins!!!
top five band's for me
1.pearl jam
2.soundgarden
3.mudhoney
4.tad
5.nirvana
I didn't see him... for whatever reason it just never worked out where I got to see Malfunkshun or Mother Love Bone live.
Malfunkshun. Some fairly obscure stuff. I was able to download the albums though. Im guessing physical copies are hard to obtain.
Thank you for doing this video. In the 90's I was huge into grunge. I am sure you know the ones I was into. Thanx to this video I can relive the 90's with bands that I never heard of . I always wondered what it would have been like to live in Seattle during that era of music.
Seattle grunge ftw.
omg... Trevor from Trailer Park Boys???
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that my favorite grunge band is Alice in Chains!
It's not a grunge band but queensryche were massive in the 90's
Hey Metal Jesus! Did you ever have any knowledge of the Sanctuary or Nevermore in the '90s?
Thank you so much for getting me to check out Candlebox... they are AMAZING!! Happy New Year from the UK x
Good video. 90s / Grunge music from Seattle is definitely my favourite stuff, if only I was there in when it was all happening like you were.

I used to work in Help Desk/IT for most of my career...but then I started working for my wife, who is a real estate agent in the Seattle area.
That Portland band had a big part in the excellent documentary called Dig! Ever see that? Fascinating look at the two bands!
The beginning and endings songs were from a metal band called TON and the middle section was a industrial band called Rorschach Test
Thanks for noticing! The plan is to keep things fresh for you and me. Hopefully neither of us will get bored with my channel videos anytime soon! :)
I'm really big into Opeth and somebody recommended Katatonia to me recently. I really like their albums Last Fair Deal Gone Down & The Great Cold Distance. Great stuff!
Good point! Love their first album, so that is just an oversight. Besides, we actually cover their song Naked & Famous in our band when we play live.
nice stuff. i love the variety on your channel. and your hair kicks serious ass!
I am very familiar with Local H and I really like their 90s albums. They even have a song called "Eddie Vedder"
Some great suggestions! Speaking of the Toadies, their song Backslider is so much FUN to play on guitar! Love that main riff...
Not really technically a Seattle band but Melvins are one of my all-time favorites and I still listen to Tad every now and again. Chicago should be the birthplace of the 3rd Wave Grunge Movement
First I've heard of this book. Thanks for the recommendation!
Yep. And we're wearing UtiliKilts and Doc Martins as well :)
I remember Course of Empire! They had a great song called "Infested" back in 94. That drum beat is awesome

What about Stone Temple Pilots? I know they weren't from Seattle but grunge music was not only about Seattle, it was more about the feels!

The Squirrels, man. OZ on 45 on green vinyl. Really creative and really weird. Sounds...familiar somehow....
My favorite band from this time was Alice N Chains I like what Dha plays the rock of New Jersey?
Did you ever get to see NME and Forced Entry?
Got this video as a suggestion and watched it again for the first times since it was released. So great to hear and hope you guys will do more of them and talk more about the 90s! :)

1. Jimi Hendrix

3. Alice In Chains
4. Soundgarden
5. Pearl Jam (tied with Mudhoney)
also, check Local H! Great Illinois band from that period, there's even a bootleg somewhere of a show in which they did a full set of doors songs!
That was a fascinating vid, wish I had a time machine to go back to the 90's now LOL
Looking forward to the 80's Hair-Rock-metal-thingymagig vid!
Cool video guys! I love your gaming videos but it's great to see other topics like this.

Do the Goth Scene Queen of the Damned, Type O Negative Nortre Dame, One Of The Korn albums is also gothic

You can't mention 90s Grunge without Nirvana, I mean obvs...
+Finn Tendo Nirvana is the Nickelback of grunge. Basically it fucking sucks compared to the rest of the grunge scene
There's no such thing as "grunge". Grunge was s term made up later by record companies and flannel shirt companies to sell CDs and flannel shirts to pissed off teenagers. None of those bands ever called themselves "grunge"
thats one opinion, yes. i dont agree though
shitting on nirvana nowadays is bullshit, they were clearly way ahead of the rest of the grunge scene, they popularized alternative rock for a reason
Totally Not William yeah thats why nirvana was more famous because they sucked so bad. fucking idiot
Come on, Candle Box? Ugh, they were such a manufactured band, just like Green Apple Quickstep. Disappointed. Also, you think Sleater Kinney didn't make it? Where have you been? How could you not talk about Mudhoney, Gruntruck, Skin Yard, Coffin Break?
katatonia was in the 90's and not many people know about them, they are proggresive and gothic doom metal, they are incredible
Thanks for the info, definitely have to check out these bands in the near future. Maybe do a list of your favorite music videos from the 80s and 90s?
Hey buddie u a metal slug fantatic? u will love Cockneys V Zombies movies check it out;.
I love that album.....Naked & Famous is probably the best songs on the album...but I also love "Kitty" and "Peaches" LOL

Metal Jesus,
Great video.
