I am 45 years old . I literally came out of the womb listening to Hall and oates. To see them after all these years at war with each other is absolutely heartbreaking. I hope and pray they can make amends with each other.
This is unfortunate. I'm a fan and stood right in front of the stage with my wife watching them. They're good together. However, Hall sold a huge part if their catalog years ago and admits that was a mistake. Oates wasn't consulted in that sale. He's called Oates a tag along with little talent and on and on. These guys started together in 1967! Yes, they were kids and if Oates was such a bum, Hall could've dropped him in the 70's. Some of the things he's been saying and doing to Oates are disgusting. They're each 75 now and it's clear they won't work together again, so why not Oates sell his half and move on with his family. Hall was blocking him from touring and playing their sings Hall claims he wrote and Oates doesn't have a right to perform. Again, they're 75 and life is short, so this is sad.
I feel like we're missing some of the facts or part of the story. How could Oates expect Hall to roll over and accept him selling his half to someone Hall didn't approve?? If they were indeed friends, that's a phone call or a meeting to say, hey, I'd like to sell, how can we work together to make that happen? I find it hard to believe after all these years working together the lines of communication weren't open enough to have talked about this. And I'm not pointing a finger at Oates, I'm saying we just aren't hearing the whole story, that's what it feels like.
Regrettably this is what they call journalism and news reporting nowadays , where it's not much more than a title and a couple sentences but no real questions and no answers to those questions most of the time anymore unless it's one of those in depth shows like 20/20 or 60 Minutes , or written by a true investigative journalist . They could have done a little bit more here , for example do they have kids ? ...and maybe Oates wants to give their kids a lot of money now , while he's still alive to see how the son or daughter will use it ? Likewise maybe , the Hall has kids and wants to leave the share of the catalog to them to secure their future later down the road ? And yes you're right Oates should have known that he can't sell it without his partner's consent ... the fact that he tried to do that is pretty underhanded don't you think ? Look at 2:53 how Oates looks like he has big black wings like a dark angel and a devilish expression on his face , haha .

@@daveclark8337Dave I really believe it was Daryl Hannah who talked Neil into selling it . When they both took time away from their partnership, Daryl continued to be successful on his own terms, while John went in his own direction and got no push whatsoever. He's made albums that got little to no promotion whatsoever, no radio airplay... he would appear on tv Talkshows to promote his latest album, and all the hosts want to discuss is his success with Daryl Hall. To hear of Oates and Hall quarrelling to this level of hate and destruction in their old age is quite sad and pathetic. It could cast a shadow over their legendary works, a disastrous epilogue to a once unparalleled legacy.
This is the way of the music world these days. Many artists are selling their music catalogs to companies interested. Not alot of money is coming in from royalties these days. John Oates is doing what Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and others have done over the past several years. Only thing is being half of such a sucessful duo Hall and Oates does pose it's problems.
Yeah I guess and keep their fingers crossed hoping their songs won't be used for anything too horrible such as decades ago when the wonderful song sung by Arlo Guthrie , The Train they call the City of New Orleans was played during a commercial for a LAXATIVE . Literally a sh!tty thing to do to that great song .
Depends upon what their partnership "agreement" reflects. If Hall has the right of first refusal and can approve of the sale, then Oates has to abide by that.
Have a feeling there is a lot more going on here. It would seem that logically if you wanted to sell your half of the catalogue or whatever you would offer first refusal to the person you created the songs with. It's too bad, but think more of what is going on here will eventually reveal itself.
There are very few equal talent duos, Tears for Fears, Simon and Garfunkel, Wham , etc etc, I’ll let you figure it out who has the greatest share of the musical talent.
I can see Hall’s point of view. Splitting 1/2 with a partner who contributed less than 1/2 the value of the enterprise is a tough pill to swallow. These guys are getting older and are certainly looking at how their riches will be passed onto future generations.
I have been a huge fan for so many years, but this really turns me off, mostly Daryl Hall’s role in everything. I was appalled by the way he talked about John Oates when with Bill Maher. Such a lack of class. Oates was a major part of their success. It was the synergy of the duo. Hall’s solo stuff sucks. I wish he’d show a little humility.
They probably should have worked out all this legal stuff when they first partnered up or after they started making hit songs. From interviews I've watched of them both, it sounds like they were both individual artists who never 100% thought of themselves as a permanent duo even though their fans thought they were. I hope they can work this out for the sake of their friendship and so that they both will have the money and assets they need to enjoy the rest of their lives. Thanks Darryl and John for the great music!
So sad.. Why is it so much more important to have $20 million instead of $10 million? At 75 years old.. They've been friends for more than 50 years. Sad.
I always thought John Oates was just another member of the band. Daryl Hall always seem to be the talented one. John Oates just sat back and always sang ooh ooh
If Oats want to cash in and move on ok, but at lease have the courtesy to talk about it with hall instead of going behind his back making a deal without his permission.
im not sure how oates think he can sell what hall wrote most of the songs.oates must be hurting for money and hall is doing fine.i dont blame hall for doing this at all!!!good for him!!if it wasent for hall there would be no oates!when your the singer, and head writer of the songs, you dont really need oates.
All this legal mumbo jumbo, disputes about rights and money - affecting their relationship and causing stress for both. The bottom line is their music will always be known as Hall & Oates. They are the artists that wrote and created it. The companies and record labels promoting them took their share but it’s the artists and the songwriters that did it . That will always be the truth and you can’t take it away from your spirit. They are both up there in age , time is ticking, it doesn’t matter much to get a few extra bucks for a while. Working on their relationship is most important at this point.
Without full knowledge of the personal situations, it is hard to judge rightly. We only see actions, not intentions or motives. It is sad to see things not worked out away from the courthouse - man to man. Hopefully they can keep business separate from play basic level of maintaining personal relationship and allow the attorneys to battle it out.
Isn’t money always the root of these matters? Sad but in these days - not shocking or surprising. Hall has been active. Haven’t heard much from Oates. I hope the work it out.
Yeah I was going to try to research it but instead started reading all the comments and there's a number of people that explain about how their relationship had been strained and why
These guys have been fighting with each other for years behind the camera, music and money keep them together but as they getting older finally came to head. Sad.
It’s all about that partnership agreement and the state where they filed . Just a reminder how important those initial agreements can be ! A friendly reminder from your neighborhood CPA
From what I’ve heard so far- I’m kinda leaning #team Hall (even though I thought his comments from Bill Maher podcast were a bit heavy handed). I’d want at least a heads up from my business partner and I’d also want to know who the buyer is and the terms of what is essentially 1/2 mine. Do they each own 50% of the songs (publishing)?
Why is it that business deals together sometimes destroy the chemistry that put it together. Greed, pettiness, jealousy and maybe just a change in the matter of opinions destroy so many long term relationships.
Geez, the struggles with money and egos etc etc............love their music, those were the good times, the '70s and '80s, timeless stuff. God bless 'em both.

So sad.. Why is it so much more important to have $20 million instead of $10 million? At 75 years old.. They've been friends for more than 50 years. Sad.
WTF does he needs that money up front for? Just keep making money off that catalogue. WTF even is this?
They’re a true American classic with actual talent. I hope they work it out.
I always thought John Oates was just another member of the band. Daryl Hall always seem to be the talented one. John Oates just sat back and always sang ooh ooh
I want to know what G.E. Smith thinks about all this…
If Oats want to cash in and move on ok, but at lease have the courtesy to talk about it with hall instead of going behind his back making a deal without his permission.
I'm sure there are reasons
Clearly hall wasn’t going to agree based on this case
Crazy how bands end up! Sad!
im not sure how oates think he can sell what hall wrote most of the songs.oates must be hurting for money and hall is doing fine.i dont blame hall for doing this at all!!!good for him!!if it wasent for hall there would be no oates!when your the singer, and head writer of the songs, you dont really need oates.
👤 I side with Darryl Hall, 👍
John Oates seems a bit shallow and desperate for money 👍. 🗣️ C'mon Man
Mr.Hall is correct
Extremely sad to hear of this. My favourite duo of all time. Hope they can work things out.
Why won't he sell his half to Hall?
Bcs Hall ain’t crediting him
Oats has no money anymore, hence the sale.
Hes probably making a salacious statement because of you trying to sell out your company.. maybe thats why?
I was a child of divorce this saddens me. I wonder who gets custody of Oate's moustache?
Hall n Oats was the BOMB in the 80's...
Oats was basically a backup singer. Dude needs to get over himself.
These guys have been fighting with each other for years behind the camera, music and money keep them together but as they getting older finally came to head. Sad.
It’s all about that partnership agreement and the state where they filed . Just a reminder how important those initial agreements can be ! A friendly reminder from your neighborhood CPA
Money is the root of all evils.
Ahhh the sad reality of what money can do to people
Immature for sure. They worked with each other for years.
Hall was the brains and real talent of the two. And that's not to take anything from Oates' contribution, but John should feel so lucky..
Yes, say it isn't so. Just shake each other hand, give a hug, and keep it moving for us long-time fans.
How sad..what ashame this is going on between them. I absolutely LOVE them!
Why is it that business deals together sometimes destroy the chemistry that put it together. Greed, pettiness, jealousy and maybe just a change in the matter of opinions destroy so many long term relationships.
That was all Tommy Mottola. He favored Darryl as lead when it came to marketing and videos.
Well, it’s a case of POSSESSION OBSESSION
Is either of them hurting for money? Otherwise, why not work it out so they both benefit? Yeesh.
Geez, the struggles with money and egos etc etc............love their music, those were the good times, the '70s and '80s, timeless stuff. God bless 'em both.
I can't go for that
