This is what exceptional songwriting, and pure vocal ability sound like. “Artists” of the last 30 years can’t hold a candle, and could benefit from sitting in on this Master Class. 💥🎶
50 years later and I cry every time I hear it. My sister was a massive Todd fan and I've been listening to him my entire consciousness. This song reminds me of my Carl , who I'll hopefully meet again on another plain of consciousness. I know wherever he exists there's music there 🎶🎶🎶
His untrained ear makes for better, more interesting, more sentimental note combinations than highly trained music theoreticians applying learned and very well proven techniques. But more, you just gotta love Rundgren's heart and soul. He's a jewel.
2 minutes and 24 seconds of SHEER PERFECTION from THE MASTER HIMSELF! One of the BEAUTIFULLY HAUNTING BALLADS EVER WRITTEN! THANK YOU TODD! I LOVE YOU!!🎸🎶🎵🎼
This song is a masterpiece. If you have ever lost someone who you love it is in inspiration. Thank you Todd for this great song and all of your music. Todd squad👌.
Mike Jordan You know what the coolest thing is? You now have the rest of your life to be moved to your core by a body or work of one of the greatest artists of the last 100 years. Start with his first record. Runt. Move to his second, Ballad of Todd Rundgren. And keep moving forward as Todd ALWAYS did. Along the way read about his unbelievable skills and success as producer of some of the highest grossing (and not) records of all time. I'm just excited that someone gets to experience what I did in 1972 when I was 12; falling in love with the music of TR. I'm kind of jealous. 😉
I've been just a casual fan since I was a kid. Never having any friends that were into him or even my oldest brother who turned me on to so much music at an early. I saw Utopia in 82 and had a just a few of Todd's albums. But he just played Ft. Myers and I have more of a love for him than ever and have been amassing quite a TR and Utopia library on vinyl. I just keep discovering new things to love about about God Rundgren. Better late than never.
P.S. If interested, get the book, A Wizard, A True Star. Details of his life of recording and producing with commentary from about everyone that he ever produced. It's really good.
About time. I have enjoyed listening to Todd for 40 plus years. I'm 63 now! Cathy St. John/Palm Spring, California is still listening & loving it even more. MEMORIES are a good thing!
I was 13 in 1974 when this song hit the airwaves. My older brother Pat of 9 years, had this album on 8 track, and i literally played it to death in his Cougar back then, just sitting in our yard. My Dad died Feb of that year, and to this day, when I hear this beautiful song and Todd Rundgren's voice, I am immediately 13 yrs old again and I can't stop the tears. Man I love you TR. Simply put.. you have the gift from God! Thank You for sharing this video and song! Charlie Hilton
I was 12 years old when this song came out, and it brought tears to my EYES then! And it STILL does! I could listen to this song FOREVER! THANK YOU TODD!🎸🎶🎵🎼
How brilliant and quirky to start one of the most beautiful broken heart songs of all time with... a quote from General Douglas McArthur's farewell speech.
Most beautiful song ever done by a Glam Rocker of the time. Over the years he changed a lot, but wow what ability to roll with the times throughout those years. Go Todd!!!
Todd played this on the same night that he played an out of control version of Couldn't I just tell you. Then he sits down at the piano and plays this masterpiece. Not that his version of couldn't I just tell you wasn't a masterpiece, however this song is just something out of this world. Todd forever.
I'm camping under the stars in Utah..and this song will forever hit a center in my soul since I've been mourning the passing of 2 Family members. Please keep this song uploaded. Thank you and Blessed be.👑🍁🍂🌹🌲🌲
I saw him three years ago. Amazing. I'm blessed to have seen him in his early career. First show I saw he did first half of the concert just him and a piano with a backtrack playing all songs from Something Anything. Second half he came out with full band and did almost all of AWATS. I'll never forget that. Next was a couple years later and he did most of Todd and Utopia. Those were CRAZY. ROCKIN shows. As beautiful as his ballads are, his ROCKIN metal was just as powerful.
I play this song for a lost friend, Peter Wilson, and Brother Gary who are no longer with us in person, but I believe they pop in on aviation's, so guys this one is for you both
Reminds me of a most beautiful women. She had my heart the second I saw her and still dies after all these years. Goodnight Gerri my love. I’ll see you one day.
Thank you Todd for this beautiful song. Heard it the other day and was overwhelmed with bittersweet memories and thoughts of what could have been. Now I think of this song when I get up in the morning til late at night. I accept that I am just a hopeless romantic at heart.
"A Dream Goes On Forever" LyRiCs A million old soldiers will fade away But a dream goes on forever I'm left standing here, Ive got nothing to say All is silent within my dream A thousand true loves will live and die But a dream goes on forever The days and the years all go streaking by But the time is stopped within my dream We all have our everyday hopes and fears And you'll find no exception in me But that doesn't get me through a sea of tears Over life's biggest tragedy You're so long ago and so far away But a dream goes on forever I guess I believe that I'll see you one day For without it there is no dream You're so far away and so long ago But my dream lives on forever How much I love you you'll never know 'Till you join me within my dream How much I love you you'll never know 'Till you join me within my dream ♥
I was seven in 1974 and I remember my mom spinning Todd Rundgren on the home record player and thinking, even as a kid, this man's heart is coming through loud and clear.
Vote for Todd as an nominee for induction to Rock &’Roll Hall of Fame 2019 on their web page if you’re a fan. He’s 3rd fave behind Def Leppard & Stevie Nicks. I Saw Todd October 27th 2018, at the John Curtain Bandroom in Melbourne Australia, He was Absolute Magic. He sang this song last. It’s his 70th year on earth and he rocked the roof off. I was right at the front. The only way he could leave was through the audience and like many other lifelong fans, I gently touched his shoulder as he was guided through the crowd. What a special night. I’d not seen him since I was 17 in a small stadium in Saginaw, Michigan. He was about 27 and climbing his pyramid on stage with Utopia. I am buying the Runt album again today. I lost my first copy. I can’t wait. I love Todd, he changed my life!
I love Todd. Prior to COVID I attended at least 4 live concerts and one virtual. So glad he made it into Rock Hall. Todd and Bebe Buell were so cute together until she had a liaison with Steven Tyler. That resulted in a pregnancy and the child is alive, well and knows what happened. I think Todd was the guy she knew most as "dad" but Tyler then acknowledged her.
Something/Anything, A Wizard A True Star, then Todd. An amazing 3 album run. Two double albums, and one had about 30 minutes a side. Like Neil Young and David Bowie, he owned the 70s.
I'm instantly transported back to my teenage years. His vocal performances are still soulful today... after all these years. Can't wait to see him in mid-August, (Pontiac, Mi.). Yes and Carl Palmer are also on that ticket. Cheers.
He is beautiful . I love this pure , lovely sound and the chords . I had heard some of his songs before . Just never knew they were Todd Rundgren . Discovered that on Wings of Pegasus music analysis UA-cam channel . His songs make me feel happy yet sad at the same time.
Really nice! Not sure I ever heard this song. Today this couple came in for lunch and I asked them where they were coming from , and the guy said, “ South Carolina” !!! We talked a while and they were real nice.
This is what exceptional songwriting, and pure vocal ability sound like.

Incredible song. He's one of the most underrated musicians ever.
You can vote for him in 2018 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
He sneezes out great, under-appreciated songs. So prolific.
I think you mean UNDER APPRECIATED, but I understand where you're coming from. He's a treasure that more ordinary people should know about.
I LOVE YOU!!🎸🎶🎵🎼
This song touches you in such a profound way.
Love your description ..."haunting ballad". Like a lot of Todd's works. The most underrated rock musician that ever was.
Todd Rundgren is the most underrated genius in music today. And always. Thank you Todd.
My heart can barely take it, but I cant stop listening!
Such a talent….unfortunately many aren’t familiar with him because he doesn’t play the music industry game!
This song is a masterpiece. If you have ever lost someone who you love it is in inspiration. Thank you Todd for this great song and all of your music. Todd squad👌.
Joseph Rodriguez ~ Dear one, yes Todd nails it! Blessings from me to you in 2020
Yes!! I lost my daughter 😢 December 23 2017. She loved Todd!! She was 30yrs old
I played this song at my sons funeral

True ... when music was original and performers played their own instruments, wrote their songs and could sing.
how can Todd be so iconic yet so humble.......the wonderful honesty in his songs touch me deeply and will forever be my dream as well........
this is truly one of the most beautiful songs in the world
Yep... :-)
yes yes...also my fave performance then & now
I play it over and over on the keyboard just to feel the bittersweet memories...amazing to enjoy a sweet pain or longing. thanks.

Straight to my heart just like when I first heard it 47 years ago! Thanks Todd.
Makes life worth living.
Todd was soo ahead of his time, not enough people appreciated his talent and skill, Todd owned the 70's but.... the best of us go some what unnoticed.
I am still here song so awesome
Absolute perfection
How a 20 something year old wrote one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard is a mystery

Most intelligent musician ever!!
A song that will go on forever, beyond just a dream.
favorite song
1:21 the falsetto "lives on" is possibly one of my most favourite ever pop moments
Just the ultimate best song ever written and sung - says it all...
I always preferred Todd and the solo piano version of this song than the version on Todd. Great tune either way! Todd is God!
I saw him three years ago. Amazing. I'm blessed to have seen him in his early career. First show I saw he did first half of the concert just him and a piano with a backtrack playing all songs from Something Anything. Second half he came out with full band and did almost all of AWATS. "A Dream Goes On Forever"
LyRiCs
A million old soldiers will fade away
But a dream goes on forever
I'm left standing here, Ive got nothing to say
All is silent within my dream
A thousand true loves will live and die
But a dream goes on forever
The days and the years all go streaking by
But the time is stopped within my dream
We all have our everyday hopes and fears
And you'll find no exception in me
But that doesn't get me through a sea of tears
Over life's biggest tragedy
You're so long ago and so far away
But a dream goes on forever
I guess I believe that I'll see you one day
For without it there is no dream
You're so far away and so long ago
But my dream lives on forever
How much I love you you'll never know
'Till you join me within my dream
How much I love you you'll never know
'Till you join me within my dream
♥
Thank you ! :)

Why do I love this song so much? 🙆
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Thank you, Todd. God bless you always.
I love this so much it hurts...like so many of Todd's songs
still so beautiful....
I was blessed to see him LIVE a couple years ago, he still is a brilliant groovy musician.
Remember seeing this when it first aired. I got the Todd album ASAP and I was then a die hard fan!! (OH, and played this song at my wedding!!)
I needed this right now. 🌏✌️❤️🎶
Just one word: BEAUTIFUL !
This song is beautiful and, for some reason, gives me hope and happiness. I’m a dreamer, always have been and always will be!😊
Something/Anything, A Wizard A True Star, then Todd. An amazing 3 album run. Two double albums, and one had about 30 minutes a side. Like Neil Young and David Bowie, he owned the 70s.

He is beautiful . I love this pure , lovely sound and the chords . I had heard some of his songs before . Just never knew they were Todd Rundgren . Discovered that on Wings of Pegasus music analysis UA-cam channel .
