      I have a factory fit towbar on my new X5. When I hook up my caravan, the car activates a towing safety feature which is, I think, incompatible with the ATC (automatic trailer control) on my caravan. A) what does this safety feature actually DO and b) can I override it?

  • @wesellanybiz

    I got this feature in my BMW 8 series and wasn’t aware of it! As some of the other people here have mentioned it can be quite scary the car pulling you back into lane at high speeds.
    BMW needs to make all drivers aware of this feature when they are selling either new or used cars to customers.
    Thanks to this video I have figured out how to switch it off and definitely won’t be using it again!

    This feature should be something that should come turned off by default and give the option to turn it on. This shit is scary, your vehicle will pull you back into your lane VERY aggressively if you don't put a blinker on to switch lanes. I could imagine this causing an accident, if say, you needed to swerve away from an accident, or a pedestrian, or an animal crossing the road; it would pull you back into danger. Not cool.

      LOL...I love this comment! Although it can be a great safety feature in the right conditions, it scared the s***! out of me the first time while test driving my X5. I had been driving an Audi with the same feature, but most times had it turned off. The Audi was more gentle with the lane correction and this option was easier to turn on/off when needed.

    • @tchan2224
      @tchan2224 2 роки тому +4

      @@MrDrProfessorVader There are times that we need to be a good defensive driver and make a quick lane change to avoid a serious accident. I choose to use those few seconds, if possible, to check my mirror prior to moving over while my hands stay on the wheel for better control. In the real world of driving, we can't always signal every single time there is an unexpected, dangerous event happening near our vehicle. Other than those instances, I always use my signal and do my best to keep my eyes on my surroundings.

      You can turn them off in a BMW so they won't annoy you. You can still also turn off the DSC completely even. BMW is still the car where the driver makes the decisions, not the car. Unlike rivals.

    • @Veyronko
      @Veyronko 5 років тому

      And in BMW these features still works far better than in any competitor.

    • @Manakuski
      @Manakuski 5 років тому

      @@Veyronko well at least the lane-guard feature does from what i've driven, but i must say the radar-cruisecontrol does not. Even a Volvo S60 from 2010 has overall a slightly better ACC than a brand new G20 3-series. The 3-series doesn't allow enough safetygap, at least the entry-level ACC does not. The way it stops the car is also very unpleasant, like an 18-year old driving the car for the first time, slamming on the brakes. The DSC also brakes for no reason after speedbumps, no matter how careful you try to be with the throttle, you really have to wait for a long time before trying to accelerate again after a speedbump.
      All this aside, you can always turn these features off with a press of a button (sometimes have to hold the button for 3 to 5 seconds), but i expected a little bit more, since older F30, F10, G30 doesn't have the speedbump issue and well this G20 is our first with ACC. I don't use the lane-keeping features at all and i only use the ACC when there's heavy traffic, even then i take control over it before having to stop just to stop smoothly instead of the system operating the brakes like a first-timer.
      These are minor issues with new systems, i hope they can iron these out with software upgrades. Otherwise the G20 is a much better 3-series than the F30, it's a joy to drive. It is kinda like a modern E90 (with lighter steering due to electric powersteering and just a bit less feel), but with a better chassis, engines, powertrain, more space etc.
      I think BMW has done great with the new 3-series and 5-series, please don't change the old recipe for those cars.

    • @Veyronko
      @Veyronko 5 років тому

      @@Manakuski What you are saying about it sounds pretty concerning, and I hope it was just an issue of a particular car that you were driving. I have currently F30 I'm smashing it through speedbumps, and DSC definitely doesn't get involved. Otherwise, it would be a severe problem, since in London we have thousands of speedbumps.
      G20 is not first with ACC. You definitely could get ACC with F30, and it's one of the most wanted features for me.
      These are definitely minor issues, but as you say, I hope they will fix it with software updates.
      I have been driving G30 for a couple of months, and it was a great car. I hope G20 won't disappoint me.
      The thing I am looking forwards most is finally to have the Sync button, lol. I would punch the guy that removed that button for F30 xD.

    • @Manakuski
      @Manakuski 5 років тому

      @@Veyronko there is no sync button in the G20, but you can access a menu with a "menu A/C" - button where you can find the sync -feature. Or if you equip your car well enough, you can simply tell the intelligent personal assistant to sync the aircon and she'll do it gladly.
