It can definitely be overwhelming, but hopefully these videos will help with that! A lot of online fabric shops will send you fabric swatches so you can feel them before placing an order - if it's not obvious on their website you can drop them an email and usually they'll be more than happy to help

I'm enjoying this video series on wovens! I would love to see something similar for knits. I find them much harder to shop for because in person shops often don't give you the full composition but when shopping online it's harder to really get a sense of the weight, softness, stretch etc. to know if it'll work for a pattern. I know spandex and elastane are often included for recovery but not always--what kinds of patterns are good for knits without those? I also don't know what to expect from modal vs. hemp vs. bamboo vs. just cotton knits OR what to expect from different weights or types. For example, I know ponte knits are usually denser, heavier weight knits but don't have similar rules of thumb for any other type of knit. I would love to buy some various sweater knit fabrics for the upcoming winter season to replace some very old rtw tops, and some mid-weight polyester-free knits to make long sleeve tees and undershirts but quickly get overwhelmed picking out fabrics.

It’s a Pattern Emporium Seachange jumpsuit, I’ve made it a few times - it’s very flowy so great for summer or layered up in the winter. For more of a pinafore style I love Helen’s closet york

The very lightweight, low threadcount cotton, often used as dress lining - is that single gauze?
very helpful. I do like sewing with cotton to make tops. I’ve made a list of types which I will ask for when next shopping for fabric ❤ 🇨🇦
