I saw a Tucker on the road in downtown Stillwater Minnesota in the middle 1990’s. It was towards dark and I saw it leave the gas station with its 3 headlights on and the middle headlight turned along with the front wheels.
A Franklin engine not many around they sat upright and were air cooled amazing they converted them like they did Tucker was destroyed by the big 3 I cant help thinking they did the same to others too .
A gentleman by the name of Johnny Janecek in Springfield Oregon owned the Tucker with the replaced engine. I saw the Tucker, but did not look at the engine bay on it so I don't know for sure. I thought Johnny said it was a Buick engine, but it's been 30 years or more since I saw it and Johnny Janecek died years back. I think the Tucker was sold to a private party------ I also never found out which number it was.
Those emgines were made for a helicopter, one in particular was the korea war medivac helicopter, and howard Hughes help tucker get those left over engine, they were originally built to run vertical, in the helicopter
i find the J40 fascinating..that looks to be a real gas engine under the hood..yet when i searched for a gas powered version all i found were pedal versions..sure would like more info on it if possible :)

I also think it was right hand drive as in the UK & had an aluminum body. East of Cleveland Ohio (Chesterland).
Yes Franklin, I had a 1947 Stinson 108 had the Franklin engine. Ran good but my A&P kept tellin me to get rid of it because it seemed to have unusually small push rods and could be trouble, never did though.

There were only 50 cars built, but a total of 125 engines. The cars are very valuable, the spare engines, not so much. If this engine is the original for one of the cars, it would have more value.
That Franklin flat 6 was used in the Bell-47 helicopter as an air-cooled version. Franklin almost went broke in 1933 but was rescued and changed to Aircooled Motors which was then bought after WW2 (1945) to be Republic Aviation Company. In 1947 that Company was bought by Tucker where he cancelled the Aviation contracts to focus on making it Liquid cooled version for his cars. Tucker Company lasted until 1961 and was sold to revive the name Franklin Engine Company .
Some idiot converted one of the surviving Tuckers into a Ford powered front engine car. I think it's time for someone to buy this engine and put that one back to stock.

That Tucker had a Oldsmobile engine originally owned by a collector who owned three back in the 1970s. He converted it for his daughter so it was more reliable.
Most of the 51 tuckers cars are known to accounted for only three are missing one burnt in a fire one wrecked and striped for parts and one unknowned. That engine is supper rare. It has to be the only one not in a car. The only spare engine. Worth at least $50.000 plus.

...well, looks like this Tucker engine was set up for a manual transmission...so I guess it's not from #1042..:(...I am completely fascinated with Tucker #1042, as it's one of only 2 with an automatic transmission, and the only unaccounted for example, therefore about the only "barn find" possibility there is with a Tucker...doubt it's around in one piece, but I keep hoping more parts of it will surface...hopefully some substantial parts..or even a rusted, crushed hulk...look at some of those Plymouth Barracudas and Dodge Daytona's that are being "restored"...so anything is possible...Heck, I say dig up #1023, and "re-create" it......

Too late, Matt ... Tucker converted it over to water cooling. The additional casing, plumbing, radiator and water would make it weight prohibitive on the little 47. It's worth much more now historically as a Tucker Conversion than as a Helo engine.

If you love it, let it find a home with someone that knows what to do with it.

It is also called a Staggered V4 to make it shorter for space. i think there ios also a staggered inline 6. The trick was to have the water jackets the right size and a better cooling system with the cylinders closer .
One of Tucker's ideas was to make the engines easy to remove. That way if it needed major repairs at a dealer the customer could just drive up, the mechanics could swap in a loaner engine in 20-30 minutes and quickly get the customer back on the road in their own car. No Tucker dealer network was ever created but early on the factory probably did have some of those loaner engines that was never planned to go inside a car.

The widow of the dealer gave me a large stash of printed material, Tucker magazines, banners, order blanks for a Tucker etc. The sign that said Twentieth Century Motors still exists in the collections of the Newark Arcadia Historical Society. Too bad that the dealer never got any cars to sell. He ended up being an Airway Sales district manager and was a good one. Now, having said that (and this will get me into trouble) In 1947-48 GM, Chrysler, Ford were doing so well that this mechanical mess did not cause them to lose much sleep. Tucker failed because he was a promoter and dreamer with no money. People hated GM even back then and loved to support the little guy. Remember the story that GM killed a car that could get 100 mpg.? Big 3 absolutely destroyed upstarts..and with the help of the govt bc they were so hard in bed with them due to war production being one major reason.

@@jasonjgr8580 everybody in USA and (kinda)France, Germany ,Italy.Many other (quite big )places where they speak English they call internal combustion and steam power units engines and electric motors motors.The whole world isn't America even though some folk act like it is.

@@algrayson8965 I come from England.There is this thing in language called 'common usage'.How people talk.All my life until my 50's the oil was Engine oil..even though the American dominated oil firms packaged it in cans with 'motor oil' printed there.I don't live there now.
The language spoken in USA has developed separately and ,you'll be glad to know,is steadily taking over from my way of speaking.I'm not in an argument over right or wrong.English is packed full of illogical features because of its history..
