Spark Plug Change on 2017 Honda Civic

- In this video we change all 4 spark plugs on a 2017 Honda Civic EX 1.5L Turbo engine in just about 20 minutes.
It can be done much faster, but here you'll get the step by step instructions!
You'll definitely need:
-10mm wrench or socket
-14mm deep socket, make sure it fits into the engine
-Ratchet extension so you can reach down into the engine
-Ratchet, I used a 3/8" drive
-New spark plugs

I appreciate you taking the time in explaining the process like we are 5-years-old and explaining what may go wrong. This looks relatively easy compared to my old Lexus LS400. Honda dealer quoted $350 for the job. Just ordered all 4 NGK spark plugs for $30 and doing this myself.

Video was real helpful. Changed my Spark Plugs yesterday and was successful. I just used NGK instead of Auto lite because they are pre gapped and no needed anti seize. I had the special 9/16 spark plug socket so I recommend that for this job. Torquing is encouraged but really not needed for this job as long as it’s nice and snug 👍🏾

Thank you. I’m 53 and I’m gonna show my daughter how to change the spark plugs in her car. We will save about $200 doing it ourselves based on a repair shop quote. I’m sure the dealer is at least double that in our area.
Happy to help. As many others have noted in the comments, I chose to go cheap with this repair. Many have suggested using NGK spark plugs for this replacement and to properly torque the plugs. However, I have had no issues since this video, and I did this over a year ago. Good luck!

Even at half the price quoted by my Honda tech ($225), it’s too much. I let them do it only after they included the engine air filter and the oil/filter change. On a separate occasion, they quoted $125 to replace the cabin air filter. I laughed. I told him, “a $28 filter and five minutes to replace the filter with no tools? Are you serious?” Obviously, I refused and did it myself.
Txmoney, my daughter took her Honda HR-V to the dealership for some warranty work, and they gave her a laundry list of maintenance items needing done for $1000 plus! I did it all for $150! 🤨

Got the same spark plugs you got and my car shakes. Not sure how to fix the issues. I just now got a an emission light one with a couple more with it..
@@marcomoreno7401 hmmmm. Not sure. When you say it shakes what does that mean? Mine has vibration that's just normal engine vibe. I've had it with stock plugs and these ones. No emissions light tho... Anything else seem to be happening with the car?
Like the car shakes. Read on it and it said that it its the spark plugs might be too tight/loose or the gap isn’t correct..
@@marcomoreno7401 Could be. A few others here have mentioned setting gaps on the plugs. Too tight or loose seems interesting, but setting the gap definitely determines how big the spark is. That could be it. It's really not hard to do. The tool is at your local auto store for probably $1 or so. I realize I did not show that here. It would be a quick fix for sure.

I changed the plugs yesterday your video helped alot. I did have to go buy a thin wall socket. But no big deal. Took me like 20 minutes to change the plugs. I got 3 miles more per gallon. Thanks bro for the how to

Got little over 70 000miles on my 16 ex-t. Probably should change mine out too.
Only had to replace engine oil, filter, skid plate, did CVT fluids at 69500. Great car.
Got 40.5 mpg at 75-80mph on 450 mile trip recently, mind you burning Costco premium fuel.

which spark plugs did you buy and were they the right gap size out of box?
Decent video but there’s a couple tips needed. The spark plugs need to be Torque specd and it’s supposed to be NGK spark plugs for optimal performance. This video is the complete cheap way to do things. You don’t want to go cheap on maintenance.

Autolite? Couldn't spring $10.50 a plug for NGKs?
TIP: You can also use your coils to pull the plug out, doesnt work the greatest putting them back in but removing them is the hard part
Just a bit of unsolicited information. Use NGK plugs and DO NOT use anti seize on them as it is not recommended by NGK. The use of anti seize will alter torque measures by 20%. Please torque plugs to 13ft pounds as well.
Quit spreading bs lol they have anti seize that say "safe on spark plugs" have always used a dab on my plugs and never an issue. Some ppl just like to over do it and go to town on the torque and that's when issues occur.
@@yammyking22 I was speaking solely about NGK plugs which should be used on this Civic. I’m sure the plugs you use in your particular car could be bought anywhere and the addition of anti seize wouldn’t hurt them or the car you drive. Incidentally, how does one ‘go to town’ with a torque wrench? If properly calibrated and used correctly it will click or sound when proper torque is achieved.
@Doctor Wu ngk plugs are compatible with like 99% of cars today. If someone uses too much anti seize instead of just a dab like I referred to then yes you can easily overtorque it if not careful with a torque wrench. With that excess amount of anti seize the torque wrench won't be able to tell when to stop with the extra lubrication.

Thanks for this video. My 2015 Civic just came up with B124. Ive been reading anywhere from 13 to 15 LBS torque on the sparks. Are you having any problems with the way you did it?
No problems thus far! I drive my car pretty hard, so I assume if anything would have happened, it would have happened by now.

Thanks for the video, my car has 51,000 miles and Had it for 5 years now same year and model. I’m going to change the plugs or check em at least to see any wear and tear. I’m trying to figure out why it vibrates while idling, I have a harsh idle that shakes my seats took it to the dealer and they told me it’s normal motor shake, they only checked the motor mounts and found that they’re fine. Any ideas?
Hmmm another comment below has a similar comment about vibrations when turning on and off the AC. I dont know if we ever figured that one out. Personally, my car does the same thing. It vibrates a bit, and if I am sitting still, I can see my passenger seat vibrating, especially near the headrest area. When I shift into N / neutral, the vibration stops. I suspect it is because we are unloading the engine / torque converter, but I'm not sure.
I do not have a rough idle, however, just minor vibration. I've had the vibration as long as I've owned the car. I got it in late 2016. Depends on how harsh is 'harsh' I suppose, but it wouldnt hurt to check the plugs.
I have a similar turbo in Asia/ pakistan, and m experiencing the same while idling .. found it normal as acceleration is quite good and I still touch 100 in 8 seconds .. quite a good pick ..
Try removing the MAF sensor within the Intake and cleaning it off with some MAF Spray (and only MAF spray), that may aleviate your issues. While doing that, take a little more time and clean the interior of the throttle body. A lot of stumbling generates from those two components.
So my civic shakes whenever I turn off the ac, I can feel the vibrations on the seats, you think it could be my spark plugs?
Hmmm. I don't think so. The AC compressor is driven by a belt. So maybe check the belt? Small amount of vibration isn't terrible. I think mine does something similar. Mine vibrates a little in D but if I shift to N it stops because you unload the engine/transmission
My honda civic hatchback is shaking when taking off (accelerating) and at low speed. I have new tires & brakes. Do you think I need to replace spark plugs or clean fuel injectors? I'm at 59k mileage

It does sound like a cylinder could be misfiring or something. Though I'm not sure. Is the steering shaking? Or does it feel like the engine?

Well that seems like quite a long time to go without changing them, but as long as you don't notice any change in performance, you can do whatever you want. I'd be prepared to change them sooner rather than later though

Hey Ivan. Sorry for the delay. I've been out backpacking. OD of my socket is about 20mm (~19.7mm) or 0.773in
I bought cheap spark plugs and the car started to shake. Ended up buying originals and it worked perfectly.

Do you have to unplug the battery before taking the spark plugs out?
Nope. Just make sure the engine isn't running / the car is off. I am not EXACTLY sure on what goes on inside a coil pack, but the sparks are computer controlled so if the car is off, there shouldn't be electricity to the plug.

@@Bot-mx2sr I believe they will. i have not tried it, but i see no reason why they'd use different spark plugs on the 2.0L over the 1.5L. They might be a slightly different spark gap or maybe a different temperature rating, but otherwise, I'd guess the same. Let us know and good luck! 👍👍
ok dumb question: how did you know it was time to replace the spark plugs? did you wait for the maintenance minder? if not what signs did you looked out for?
Good question. In this case I just waited for the maintenance minder. But other signs of bad plugs might be a lot of vibration in the motor (more than the normal engine buzz), lower than normal fuel mileage, and maybe a few other things.
Follow up questions: 1. When the maintenance minder came on you were still able to start and driver the car or no? 2. Denso or NGK are the best spark plug brands amirite? Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions Sean 😁
@@wilbryest yeah maintenance minders are only reminders. They do not stop you from driving. And yes NGK seems to be the plug of choice. I chose to save some $$$ but every likes NGK
Hi there just curious how did the autolite hold up after putting them in. How long did they last?
Still going strong! Haven't changed them since this video. I dont know what mileage I was at when I did the video but I'm nearing 140k or 150k now
@@seandonovan8460 Thats good to hear. I saw a lot of mixed reviews about NGK vs Autolite in terms of performance. After looking at the reviews, comments, and videos. I became skeptical. I want to put autolites in my ride, but my mechanic is telling me to use NGK. But I am not sure if its just a money grab.
@@gmshonourthemosthigh2930 eh. I think it depends what you want to do. I know a lot of people like to push civics hard and put on performance parts. If that's the case I think NGK is worth it. But I just drive it to and from work and they work just fine.

How is your cold start ? I had these spark plugs for 6 months notice shudder on cold start every morning.
Hmmm... mine have been awesome. No stuttering or anything. You could pull them out and check that the gap is good? There's a bunch of other reasons too why this may happen in cold weather.

No don't touch them. It should be factory adjusted already if you swap the original OEM. With an Autolite, he may have to do it( not 100% certain). Go with OEM if you don't want any trouble.
Are you talking about the gap? I agree with Battle Toad. A few other comments also mentioned this. For optimal performance of any plug you should check the gap but unless you see something really wrong when it comes out of the box it should run fine.
@@seandonovan8460 he misspelled the word. The question was intended to be "do you need to adjust the VALVES?" not values. Valves are in owners manual adjusted (lash) at 100k

How often should you change spark plug (in years)?
Hey Karl. A general rule of thumb is to change them every 30k to 90k miles. That's a huge range that depends a lot on how you drive. So let's assume you need to change them every 30k miles to be safe and for easy math. If you average 15k miles per year (roughly the average driving distance per year), you would change your plugs every 2 years. In reality, you might drive less than 15k miles per year and you could probably get away with letting the plugs run more than 30k miles. So, depending on your driving and the spark plugs, maybe every 2-3 years you should change them.
NGK Ruthenium or NGK iridium spark plug last 100k miles.

Please help. I bought a Thin Wall 12 Point 14mm socket to remove the old plugs. The socket fits correctly on the new plugs, but it won't fit onto the original ones in the Hona Civic 2019 1.5L engine. Could it be 15mm or 16mm? What do you think?
Hmmm...It really should fit the old ones too. If it fits the new plugs, it should fit the ones you're replacing. Can you look down into the hole and check for obstructions or other things that could block you? Maybe something came out of the wires when you pulled them off? Maybe the socket just needs to be wiggled or turned a bit? If anyone else knows the answer please comment!
@@seandonovan8460 Thank you. No there's nothing in there. The coil came out smoothly. The 6 point size on the plug looks bigger.
How many miles when you need to change them?
There was a bit of discussion on this below, but the original NGKs should last around 100k miles. If you put in new ones that are NOT NGKs, like I did in the video, I'd expect maybe 60-80k miles. I have had no issues so far with the Autolites I've installed, but some others below have had slight issues.

Do you need to gap them?
For best possible efficiency, yes, but I have been running mine straight out of the box since I did this video and have had no problems. I'll be sure to make a spark plug gap video. There have been a lot of questions about it.
Use rubber hose to remove and start the plugs.
Is anti seize/dielectric grease necessary???
Nope. I suppose you could add some if you're worried it'll get stuck, but it's not necessary.

What type spark plugs are those?
They are Autolite Iridium XP spark plugs.
Does anyone know the torque spec for the 1.5L T? If my research is right, it should be fine within 13-15 LB-FT of torque
Number looks right to me.
Most aluminum head & seat torque for plugs are 19-21lbs or 28-30Nm (whichever you use).

Great vid but try using NGK spark plugs. I tried these autolitr since 2019 and within 2 weeks had malfunctions and my dashboard was going nuts with all the lights popping up. Took it back to dealer since I had warranty just so they can put OEM NGK spark plugs. That mistake cost me 200+
Dang dude that suck! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with Autolite. I have had no issues (knock on wood) since I put them in and made this video.

For optimal performance and perhaps a little better fuel economy, yes you should check the gap on the plug. However, unless something looks awfully wrong when you take the plug out of the box, it's usually fine to use as is. I've gotten a few comments and messages on this. I'll have to do a video on gapping a plug. Thanks!
I think if you get the ngk plugs those are gapped to 0.031” which is within spec for the civic. 0.028-0.032
why would you drop them in ...you could damage the plug or change your gap stick it in your coil pack and set each one in It was a good video until you did that

@@seandonovan8460 If the factory put NGK spark plugs in the engine and they lasted that long and still looked great when you removed them, why would you put Autolite back in just to save $35? I run a machine shop that builds racing engines and we use NGK spark plugs in everything we build. We used Autolite spark plugs 5 or 6 years ago and started having problems with them. Started using NGK and no more problems.

I am running autolite Iridium in a 2.2L Ecotec and they seem ok. I put 15000km so far.
@@seandonovan8460 I’ve had auto lite for 17k miles cold start is only time it kinda shutter or feels like a misfire for like 2 seconds.
Other than that they’re okay I just hate cold starts so I decided to go back to ngk next week!
