Only did one of Glucose Goddess' hacks. I eat a savoury breakfast and greens and protein and fat before carbs. Never measured my insulin. All I know is that by not eating carbs alone, I can happily eat 3 meals a day and not 6 or ten snacks like I used to.

Exactly! I am currently only eating 1-2 meals a day and using her advice along with Sten Ekberg’s.
I won’t buy any “health supplements” because the idea of good health is not needing supplements unless there is a disease or chronic issue, however, her tips and tricks absolutely work to reduce cravings and increase satisfaction. Sten Ekberg is also great. Between the two of them, they’re healing my relationship with my body, not just my relationship with food.

So, thank you for not cherry picking only those things that you disagree with, and dismissing her out of hand. She does say a lot of good things, that are helpful, but the general population doesn't need to follow her religiously.

Completely agree. Pre diabetic here too and got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to go on insulin to manage it. Jesses advice helped me to manage it with low amount of insulin and now that I have given birth I am trying to not develop a type 2 diabetes. However, the anti spike pill doesn’t make sense to me at this moment and also doesn’t ship to my country so I can take her advice and get benefits from it.

@@artsysolankiI was put on metformin because my fasting insulin was a bit high (12), and my dad had type 2 diabetes. It has unpleasant side effects in the beginning but within a month they were gone. It works with a controlled diet but I didn't quit carbs. So after less than a year my insulin is ~5. So talk to an endocrinologist, you don't need special pills shipped to you, just a good specialist to find a good option.

❤ everything the Glucose Goddess talks about is based in science. But the reason I love her videos, books and message is that she’s not giving out crazy recommendations… Everything is built on logic and she understands how people’s lives work and days change, and she gives great advice as to how you can work with all of these guidelines and just incorporate small changes with impactful results. She doesn’t recommend parsing your salad part by part and eat each individual item by itself, and says that would be crazy✨… She does not say that.

I'm a type 1 diabetic. The first half of this vid are PRO TIPS. The one I use most often is exercise after eating. I can be at 250ng/dl one minute, dose a couple units, walk for 15-30 mins and I drop under 100. Conversely, when I had classes for like 4-5 hours straight, preventing me from walking too often, it didn't matter what I ate or how much I dosed. I ALWAYS finished those classes at 200 or higher and it ruined the rest of the day every time. I started taking 10 minutes out of each class to walk up and down the hall and my college even got me an acomodation where my professors would speak into a mic and I'd wear earbuds while walking.

I think it simply gives us a sense of control over our health. We mostly don't know how our food is grown and sometimes prepared, there is a lot of uncertainty these days, lots of chronic stress issues etc. Having these hacks gives us something relatively easy we can follow that could improve our health so it feels good. Also it's better than extreme diets like keto that are impossible to follow for some of us.

  • @moodywrites

The obsession with blood sugar will have dire consequences.. It's edging out even basic common sense nutrition. What ever happened to get more vegetables AND fruits? The focus on eating whole unprocessed foods. The focus on fiber and color and nutrients. All of which is now replaced by protein oreos and pounding in as much as possible.
You know what all the areas with the greatest longevity (including Blue Zones) and health outcomes are not doing with diet? Being scared of carbs. Eating hyper processed protein food to get as much as possible. Being scared of eating a damn apple alone. Yeah, refined carbs are bad for you. You know what is not refined? An apple. A banana. A potato.
It's just carb fear rebranded, and it's obnoxious. It's really the wrong thing to trend in a country with an excess of processed food and defiecency of produce... which income inequality and inflation only makes worse.

What r u talking about. Jesse never says to avoid carbs🤦🏼‍♀️😂 she says to choose healthier carbs and gives u hacks u can do to eat ur carbs with lower spikes,,like eating a baby vinegar salad before ur big plate of spaghetti ..and move for 10min after…she also recommends common sense nutrition like eating more Whole Foods just as unsaid. I have 2 type 1 diabetic children so I’ve looked into her work, though I will agree there’s an awful lot of carb fear going around in general. It’s also true thT different people handle different amounts of carbs differently, and that the type of carbs really do make a difference..like eating an apple is healthier then a Oreo..but it is also true that the apple still spikes a diabetics blood sugar regardless. That doesn’t mean don’t eat it, that means eat it smart.

The thing is, our glucose spikes are a good thing to be "obsessed" about. It's the root cause for people being in a rollercoaster of eating poorly, obesity and diabetes so im not suprised people are getting "obsessed" with it. You go on about eating disorders yourself well this is a big catalyst for that! Once you get in to it, you never go back because you realise how much better you feel besides looking better!

Unfortunately, Jessie's Glucose Goddess hacks play on my distorted eating. I want to get on it but the 'suggestions' are just too triggering at the moment even though she says they are just 'guidelines.' To be honest, the whole 'lowering blood glucose concept around meals' is pretty triggering for me personally. I can't help but read the concepts of 'better for health/supports digestion' as rules (which they kind of are) if you want to 'benefit'. You don't do them = not the best for body, you do them = more helpful/lower blood sugar etc. I know it's not exactly like this and I probably could communicate it clearer but these are the struggles I am finding with my distorted eating.

I totally clicked on this video because of the thumbnail with that so unusual fashionista who always looks like she's being interviewed by Vogue lol. I don't even listen to what she says, I'm too fascinated by the juxtaposition of her high fashion clothes and nerd from the 70s hair/makeup. I was expecting this to be a roast or praise of her and was here for the drama, but I forgot whose channel this is and got educated and inspired instead. That's a lot of info to take in! I usually listen to videos at 1.75, but had to slow this one down and rewind multiple times to try and comprehend all the info before coffee. Definitely have to save this video for future reference. Holy wow - a health influencer actually sharing links to all their sources? Unbelievable!
I used to date a guy in the early 90s who had weird compulsions surrounding meals: he would always sit and have another full drink after he finished eating, and then we'd have to go walk around for a half hour our so. He thought the extra liquid helped digestion, as did the walking, as staying upright would give your stomach more room to work and gravity would help move it along. He was also crazy enough to say you had to bite the heads off of French fries first, or they'd come back to life in your stomach, so I never gave much credence to his theory. I drink a lot with my meals, so I don't fuss about having another glass after, but I still really enjoy the after meal walk. Glad to know it's good for me lol.
You are so much more helpful than the doctor who diagnosed me as hypoglycemic and the only guidance they gave me was, "If you want a donut for breakfast, eat bacon and egg first."

You don't have to do all the tips she gave, but it's very important to be in control of the glucose levels we put into our bodies. Many of the symptoms that people experience today, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other mental problems, are due to a high concentration of glucose/fructose in food because it harms our brain function. I recommend you read studies by Dr. Aman, he even recommends not touching sugar at all, our body knows how to function perfectly without it.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I think what folks like "Glucose Goddess" do a bit too much of is to fear-mongering, also making half-true claims, cherry-picking data and things along those lines. It's quite common for influencers, especially those with a bias. If it helps someone, great, nothing wrong with that, but in general I prefer a more realistic and objective influence. Not just because I despise all that fear-mongering and inaccuracy, but also because long-term it's just better for people out there, better for scientific advance, talking to your doctor, reducing support for scammers and much more.

People become diabetic by eating foods throughout their life that causes glucose spikes. Eventuall6 your pancreas wears out and your body no longer responds to your insulin. Everyone’s blood sugar spikes after eating something sweet, even if you are not diabetic. Glucose Goddess advice of drinking vinegar in water or eating raw veggies can mute the spikes, you will feel better and you won’t become insensitive to your insulin. A couple of weeks ago Abby talked about eating a plate of veggies while you are cooking prior to eating. She got her info from Glucose Goddess, but didn’t mention tha5 fact.

Well, Jessi Inchauspe/Glucose goddes does in fact not tell you to cut your carbs, but gives these ten "hacks" to moderate how you blood sugar will react to your meals. Eating veggies first, then protein and fats and carbs last; eating lots of fiber in combination with carbs, and some more stuff, like eating sweet stuff as a desert instead of between meals. She even advocates for chocolate cake in the evening, and adds protein /joghurt to them and also tells you that you do not need this antispike stuff, if you incorporate some of those hacks into your life.
If your war against food and wellness influencers always starts by making false and to wide statements about what these influencers really tell, you are damaging your trustworthyness, because oversimplifying and falsely summarize it, you are only attacking the strawmen. Saw the same with Doctor Mike and others. You are not doing any good with this, in fact you are doing the f*** same thing that you critize those influencers for. Cherrypicking data and using these cherrypics to devalue everything that comes from the influencer side of the aisle.
Fun fact: I watched the whole videos of the gluccose goddes (and yes, I cringe everytime I read/write this 'title', as well as when she calls her audience 'angels' - but you know what: that is not a valid point to dismiss her content). And I tried implementing those hacks into my life. Its easy and doesn't take anything away from me. I still have Ice cream in the evening, I just eat it as a desert after dinner and topp it with some plain yogurth. I am not wearing a cgm. the amount of veggies and within them fiber I eat in day has doubled. Since I follow those hacks (around 2 months now) one of my biggest food problems is almost gone: I am not constantly hungry and craving for food and sweets. I am actually satiated for hours after a meal. Before that, you could make an alarm clock out of my appetite and cravings. Every 1,5-2 hours I NEEDED food, got very hungry (to the point of having real hefty stomach pains) and was on a constant rollercoaster between cravings and overeating and bloating. No, I am not diabetic and probably not pre-diabetic, but have some severe mental health conditions so I struggle a lot with regulating mood and emotions. I am really overweight, I had around 60kg of excess weight. I did a monitored diet for 1,5 years and managed to loose 30kg, after that I had to take a break from dieting as I just couldn't restrict my eating anymore. So I gained 5 kg backs in around a year and am now trying to just stay at this weight and not gain anymore. those hacks helped me with that, quite a bit!
And if that was only the placebo-effect of me believing those hacks would have that result: its 2 months now. No placebo-effect has ever lasted me that long.

Type two diabetic here. Not everyone can control their diabetes simply through diet. And lifestyle is not the sole predictor of diabetes. My mother, grandmother, and great grandmother were also diabetic. Heredity plays an important role. I take a number of medications, and insulin to keep my blood sugar under control.. I don't object to taking medication. In the days before manufactured insulin diabetes could be a death sentence.

As a type 1 diabetic of 25 years the trend of worrying about blood sugars levels was a surprise to me when it started happening... and frustrating to me to see influencers get access to CGMs when they are sometimes impossible for diabetics to get when struggling with insurance issues. That being said, this video was really interesting. Two things really stuck out to me. For type 1 diabetics our insulin sensitivity is actually much lower in the morning and eating a higher carb breakfast, even oatmeal sadly, can set me up for a roller coaster ride of a blood sugar day. It's interesting that this the exact opposite for non-diabetic people. Second, years ago I mentioned to my nutritionist that I sometimes ate the carbs of my meal last to prevent a blood sugar spike (when possible). My thought was that if I give myself insulin 20 minutes before I eat and then I eat the veggies, protein, fat, etc the insulin will start being effective as I start eating the carbs. It was so interesting to hear that there actually is science to back up my theory! And also thank you for the note about cinnamon. If I have to hear one person tell me that I can cure my diabetes with cinnamon, I think I would lose my mind. Thanks for the interesting and informative video!

Hi Abbey, I’ve been following and enjoying your content for years and now studying to become an RD. Generally love your approach to nutrition advice and especially your nuanced take on gentle nutrition. Given that you often promote LMNT on your channel, I was wondering if you could do a deep dive on the science behind it. It is a LOT of sodium for the average person who probably is already getting too much sodium and it seems that its recommended use case would be very particular - athletes who are sweating a lot, maybe lactating moms, or people who’ve recently had GI distress that caused vomiting/diarrhea. And in the latter case, wouldn’t it actually be more beneficial for it to contain some glucose to improve water absorption and thus rehydration in the gut via sodium-glucose cotransporters? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!!

Although I'm also Celiac so I do also eat gluten-free 😎 which is a big help to my diabetes because if I eat gluten my major symptom is it messes my blood sugars around majorly in a negative way. I have a question about the timing of carbs - moderate carb morning seems to make sense to me, but I have a doubt about high carbs in the afternoon and low carb in the evening. I heard that eating carbs helps with sleep, and I’ve seen recommendations to eat less carbs in the afternoon to prevent the midday slump, while it’s recommended to eat more carbs at night to promote better sleep.
So these recommendations seem pretty contradictory, how might I reconcile it?

    • @sara_387

I think the recommendations being given are for people struggling with insulin resistance or who want to lose weight but are hampered by glucose spikes throughout the day. The timings Abby gave are based on studies which found that we are more insulin sensitive in the morning, or benefit from loading our carbs in the beginning of the day.
If eating a higher carb meal in the evening works for you and your sleep then go for it.

We don’t eat the broccoli first, the chicken second, the oil on its own, and then the sad rice. That to me is total nonsense. The best recommendation is to have a balanced diet (as has always been said) and that is it. You can definitely include certain recommendations but I think some things are getting out of hand.
