- Introducing Tank, a new short film from Red Giant’s Chief Creative Officer, Stu Maschwitz. In a visual homage to vector arcade games of the 80’s (like Battlezone and Star Wars), Tank tells the story of a team of pilots that must take on a weapon of mass destruction in a battle to save their world.
Putting aside current 3D modeling techniques, Stu looked to the past and built the world of Tank entirely in Adobe After Effects, using math, code, and hundreds of hours of painstaking animation work. Watch the Making of Tank to learn more about Stu’s journey in telling this visually unique story: • The Making of TANK
For a moment, I was 14 again, face pressed into the viewer of a Battlezone game in the corner of the pizza place in my old home town.
Good times.
Never a truer word said Kevin ;-)
you still young mate!
Flashbacks to dark arcades, pockets full of quarters, and Battlezone.
just plain incredible. the filmed double CRT look blew me away.
Incredible. A Holy testament to the power of After Effects, determination, and ingenuity.
Stu Maschwitz.... This short was really cool. As someone who grew up in the 70's and 80's I loved it!... This short needs more views!
I forgot how much I liked the Vector Graphics of those old video games. People need to make more games that look like this!
I agree there should be new vector games!
I'm trying to learn how to make video games and I think wireframe vector graphics need a comeback, so I'm trying my best during highschool to research stuff and thinking in what logical way can I have a game to look like battlezone, but have a more 3 dimensional feel to it.
Take a look ;)

@@jerobeamfenderson1 There still are. The Vectrex never shined like this before.
only absolute madmam would make something like this with such technique. Stu has my utmost respect
One of my favorite aspects of this is the sound design. Really incredible work all the way around.
I was about to say the same thing! Love all the sounds and music.
You should check breakdown of this video, I am sure the hardwork he put in will amaze you.
Great little film. Music couldn't have been anymore perfect for it. Nicely done, lads.
Brings me right back to my childhood, but I am pretty sure it wasn't this awesome back then...
As someone who owns a Vectrex, this is definitely up my alley.
Wow - this is so dope! It's now 1986 and I can smell the heat from the arcade machines and popcorn in the theatre in the mall! Thanks for this!
Stu you NAILED IT!!!! YOU ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT!!!! WE THE KIDS OF THE 70's & 80's SALUTE YOU!!
I've watched this several times (every 6 months or so UA-cam recommends this and I watch it again). Any chance there will be a "Tank 2: Return of the Tank"? Judging buy the amount of work that went into making this I guess not, but this film is great, and I'd love to see a sequel.
That was delightful. Vector graphics can be so relaxing. Keep up the good work.
Favorite part is the core, it is exactly as you would imagine it in the 80s wire arcades but with an upgraded look. Tron creators would be proud.
This makes me want to play the Empire Strikes Back game, looked just like this
I like how I was thinking, "Oh, this would be a fun project to mimic." Then I watched the "Making Of" and went. "Nope." I am not that smart. Great film!
i'd watch a full-length movie like this. Holy shitballs that was amazing.
The "Making of" video made us swear even more than the finished film! ua-cam.com/video/WRkYP7wnD40/v-deo.html
Disappointed it didn't say "Special *tanks* to:" at the end...
but seriously now, this is awesome!
Digging the Tron vibe, excellent work, loved it ;)
Battle zone!!! an old classic arcade...!
great work...!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminded me of my years playing games on the commodore 64.
Excellent work! I see so many "reminds me of" moments-- Ogre, Battlezone, Tail Gunner, Tac/Scan, (Atari) Star Wars... Great stuff. :)
VECTREX !!
Atari made a total of 13 vector games: In order (I think) Lunar Lander, Asteroids, Battlezone, Red Baron, Asteroids Deluxe, Tempest, Space Duel, Gravitar, Black Widow, Quantum, Star Wars, Major Havoc, Empire Strikes Back.
I proudly display my original Major Havoc in my media room.
Dedicated, or conversion? ;-)
It's the real deal, Clay. Big beautiful black Coke bottle.
Davey Givens, Nice! I have a couple Tempest conversions and a Firefox retrofit, but still no original dedicated... some day!
This is legitimately fantastic. Brought me back to the old school _Tron_ days.
Awesome! Great Battlezone vector look. Music was great too.
This is insane and deserves more views!
I'm lost for words, this is utterly beautiful
This is so awesome, I really cannot understand why it does not have 2M visits after 2 weeks. It needs sharing!
That was super cool. Battlezone is one of my favorite arcade games of all time, and you nailed the vector graphics perfectly. Big props to the genius who brought your soundtrack to life also.
I get inspired every time I see this! Thanks again Stu!
I can't stop watching, so cool.
What an absolutely amazing feel for details you have. Discovering this film and the associated making-of-film really made my day today. Thank you very much for doing things the hard way.

After seeing this short, I feel I have to learn a lot in AE, Brilliant way of controlling the Animation, Hats off to @StuMaschwitz
I love it! Congratulations Stu, I've been looking forward to seeing how this would turn out! I particularly love the wobble in the vector lines and the scanning artefacts of the TV screens, it looks so authentic. I'm gonna fire-up my Vectrex now! PS - the BTS video is also fantastic, thanks!
This. The wobble ftw
??
My goodness, its gorgeous
I wish I could give more than just one thumbs up. I've watched this about 10 times now. Being a fan of Tron and The Last Starfighter this short definitely fits right in there. I'd love to watch this short film in a theatre.
Gorgeous. Absolutely spot on.
Great fluid movements, bravo!
Simply amazing!
Crazy ........ be sure to watch the accompanying "making of" video, really fascinating and impressive ............

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING JOB! Love how it is split onto two screens too. Reminds me of so much from past, including (but not limited to) the obvious Tron and Battlezone feel(s). Literally everything about this, from the look to the sound mix was perfect. I needed this ... very inspirational. (PS. How did I know Aharon R.'s name would pop-up. Hi, Aharon!)

YAAAAAAS! Please tell me there is a longer version planned for this. Amazing tribute to the original Tron. You captured the zeitgeist of early 80's computing and visuals in a fantastic way. #flynnlives

I have to be the first to say, that is awesome! Can you do a BTS on how this short was accomplished? Totally getting a TRON vibe from this!
