  • In this video I explain how I tweak a Marshall MG100FX to make it sound great! I'm playing a 2010 Marshall MG100FX 2x12 Combo using a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom.

Interesting, sounds close enough for non musicians, I have a1959hw and an mg50, i got the MG to sound as close as i could to my 1959 and recorded samples of both and showed my friends, they could not tell any difference at all.

I still have my old Marshall MG15DFX. I lowered the gain of the overdrive channel by replacing the red LEDs with blue ones, and put in a Celestion 8 inch speaker. It's a lot of fun to practice!

cool amp and underrated, definitely benefits when one can sit with it and tweak and the effects are nice sounding. I saw STARZ former guitarist Bobby Messano using the MG100HDFX which has more knobs but he made that amp sound great also. Thanks for sharing

Older versions use a LED clipper red and green asymmetric on the OD side. I have the older MG100 head, which I picked up for free no less. Cleaned it and the pots especially. Sounds pretty dope through a proper 412 cab. With V30s and GB it sounds pretty Marshall to me.

I watched the video before reading the comments and completely believe a lot of guitars hear with theie eyes... I was not expecting as much unfavorable opinions of the tone as I did. I thought Johan made this amp sound absolutely excellent considering what it is, a solid state entry level Marshall. It definitely ballparks classic Marshall tones WAY better than I truly expected and for a budding guitarist this amp would sound beyond excellent.
I bet if it were played thru a 4x12 with pre rola Greenbacks it would sound pretty impressive tbh.

spectre sound studio proved that this is 100% the case. blind demo’d what he claimed was 3 different guitars and people were all making their claims, then later showed that they were all completely different guitars than he stated. if you don’t suck, your gear tends to sound a lot better!!!

Hi Johan, awesome stuff as always.
For the last MG series prior to these round power button ones, I found a spot in the distortion channel to insert a tone control (SWTC, essentially a ProCo Rat Filter knob), to dampen some of the treble and get a more pleasant drive tone overall, no other changes. Not sure if it's possible to do it on these newer amps however.

I think this amp can be ok used clean as a pedal platform, and upgrade the speakers.
It's usual in many low cost solid state amps that raising too much the gain makes the sound too much sharp treble buzz, cheap fuzz, to explain somehow. After all I like solid state amps if they sound good, and mostly to avoid the costly valves replacement and
maintenance. Hey Johan could you make a video of some other good solid state amps maybe Tech 21, Randall, Fender princeton chorus, Roland JC...
Great channel and thank you !

You got some nice sound from that amp, as you usually do. I'm missing the raw power you sometimes can feel from 100W tube amps with beefy transformers, but that's an unfair comparison. Wonder how the amp would sound through one of the cabs in that room.

I use a G100RCD with a 4x12 v30 cab. Yeah only use the clean channel. I've got a Bad Monkey and a linear boost in front of it, and it definetly chugs! And turning down the volume on the guitar lets you play chords nicely. Yeah need to turn down the bass, but otherwise I prefer a more neutral eq on the amp, and rather adjust it on the Bad Monkey. A weird thing to note, is that the FX knob seems to add some good sounding bass when turned up a bit, even though nothing is connected..

It sounded great! However, this time I was already biased in a positive way towards the MG 😄. Perhaps you already know Dave Simpson's channel. He's another guy that can make anything sound great, although he favours solid state amps. One of his favourite amps ever is the Marshall MG100HDFX (head), together with the speakers that came with its matching Marshall MG cab. He mostly plays Strats, though, but if I remember correctly, the logic behind his settings is similar to the logic you explained. 😃

      @stefanoberli5920 4 місяці тому +2

I use a Bad Monkey and a EHX linear boost in front of it (the head version, not the combo). You can really drive it hard. I dont dime it though: gain 3/4, mids neutral, treble bit over neutral, master 1/4. Crazy loud, and sounds very beefy with gibson 498s and through a 4x12 with vintage 30s. This is my budget setup for when I dont use the Rockerverb 50 mkI, so yeah it definely works.

Hey i know you didn't ask me but someone might find this useful maybe:
Other than a real bargain, i've heard good things about the last AVT/ Valvestate 2000 amps. IE "They sound like a real Marshall." Pair it with your favourite speakers and it should fit the budget and tone requirements. The factory ECC83/ 12AX7 is perfectly fine. And says Marshall on it. A real Mullard is a dream upgrade one day. Make sure the owner took care of it, though, like anything really.

Not related, but - working in music stores for decades the States I've played through nearly everything, but never had the opportunity to play through Crescendos. You've now revealed I need a Crescendo!
So.... before I go down that rabbut hole you've got to do a video with Crescendo clones compared to a real one, with Gilmour references....

@@JohanSegeborn That'd be great.... It looks like there's just the Weber FC12, a couple others? They look kinda like an EVM 12L, do they maybe sound similar in front of you? Include an EVM for comparison if so? Use the same DR103 settings you used in the Floyd vs the Who video... and weigh them to see if the magnet is similar to the 122346...
and do the "Breathe" snippet, and maybe a little Strat neck pickup snippet from the melody intro to "Echoes"....
In your Floyd/Who video, the purples sounded like another Celestion variant - with the characteristic variation of "clogged sinuses" coloration 500-2k I've fought for decades. The Crescendo - clear. Sounds bright but not JBL ice picky/narrow peaky...
About 50/50 close mics and the 414/hall mic? API I presume? No phasey weirdness with all of the mics, good job... Strangely I've got the same cab with a Nord Lead stored behind mine as well, maybe that's the key and I don't really need a Crescendo....? No....?
